It is known that periodontal diseases are a significant part of dental diseases in dogs. Chronic generalized periodontitis deserves the most attention. The disease develops slowly, beginning without visible clinical signs, but later, a combination of certain favorable etiological factors can lead to the loss of the animal's teeth, indigestion, metabolism with serious consequences for the dog. Therefore, the search of the features of the disease and the development of tactics for effective treatment of periodontally ill animals is relevant for modern veterinary dentistry. The aim of the work was to study the features of the course of chronic generalized periodontitis in remission in dogs and to develop tactics for rational treatment of periodontally ill animals. For the study, two groups of animals with chronic generalized periodontitis were formed in remission with 5 dogs in each (control and experimental), selected on the principle of analogues in terms of age and nature of the pathological process. Searches have shown that in chronic generalized periodontitis in remission in dogs there is an increase in the number of pathogenic microflora in the biotopes of the oral cavity, increasing the activity of acid phosphatase, increasing the protein concentration by reducing the content of lysozyme in the oral fluid. It was found that the dogs of the experimental group, after removal of tartar and rehabilitation of the oral cavity, were treated by using to the gums of ceftriaxone, diluted in 1% lidocaine hydrochloride solution in combination with 30 % dimexid solution 1 time per day for 7 days, anfluron injecteed intramuscularly at the rate of 1 ml 1 time per day for 7 days and caforsen – 0.1 ml/kg per day for 4 weeks. The treatment contributed to the recovery of dogs for 10 days, which is 8 days faster than in the control group.

Topicality. Periodontal diseases are among the most common dental diseases. This article highlights the results of a study of blood parameters in animals that underwent the simulation of ulcerative necrotic gingivitis and compared them with animals that under the same conditions received local treatment of this pathology with a developed complex of antioxidant drugs. The aim of the study was to analyze the nature of changes in the state of the antioxidant-prooxidant system during the pathological process without and on the background of treatment, and investigated their impact on quantitative and functional indicators of markers of inflammatory intensity. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 18 rabbits. The model of ulcerous-necrotic gingivitis was obtained in animals by chemical burns. Experimental preparations were applied to the damaged gum area 2 times a day in 2 hours after feeding the animals at an approximate dose of 200 mg. The nature of the course of experimental ulcerous-necrotic gingivitis was investigated on the 3, 5, 7 and 10-th days of the healing process. Results and discussion. The maximum increase in the concentration of MDA in the blood of animals of the experimental group was observed in the first observation period. In the next two terms in this group there was a rapid decrease in the content of MDA. By its nature, the dynamics of API in animals of the experimental group of animals, which received according to the conditions of the experiment, the appropriate local treatment with the developed complex, differed markedly from the dynamics found in the control. At the end of the experiment (the10-th day), the API data completely coincided with the data same as of intact animals. Conclusions. Topical application of the developed complex reduces the content of lipoperoxidation products, in particular the concentration of MDA, which avoids overexertion and depletion of antioxidant defense systems, resulting in a shift of balance in the antioxidant direction and its normalization on the 7th day.

Relevance. A long-term inflammation in the oral cavity, unreasonable treatment of periodontal patients with antibiotics cause imbalance between certain types of fungal-bacterial associations accompanied by oral dysbiosis and change of local immune status. So, development and application of new comprehensive diagnosis and treatment techniques in periodontal patients, use of products for correction of microbiota and local immunity are a current and a long-term task. Purpose is to optimize the comprehensive treatment protocol of inflammatory periodontal diseases by introducing probiotics and evaluation of oral microbiome and cytokine profile.Materials and methods. 140 patients were examined. Of these 60 patients had chronic generalized plaque-induced gingivitis and 60 patients suffered from moderate chronic generalized periodontitis. Bacterial and fungal microbiome was assessed and the host immune response was evaluated in all patients before and after the treatment. Half of the patients were treated conventionally and the other half were treated according to a modified scheme: probiotic “Bifidumbacterin Forte” was added.Results. A large number of yeast-like fungi Candida and commensal bacteria were detected in periodontal pockets of patients with chronic generalized plaque-induced gingivitis and moderate chronic generalized periodontitis. That correlates with a significant increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL—8), decrease of concentration of INF-γ and increase of antiinflammatory cytokine IL-4.Conclusion. Changes in clinical, microbiological and immunological values during a modified combination therapy with a probiotic and during a conventional treatment demonstrated that effectiveness of treatment of chronic gingivitis and chronic periodontitis increased by 40% and 37% respectively.

Introduction. More and more researches dedicated to the communication of diseases of the oral cavity of pregnant women with diabetes. It is proved that the intensity of caries and inflammatory periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) increase significantly during pregnancy, while the presence of comorbidities, such as diabetes, increase these indexes.Aim. The aim of the work was to study the dental status of pregnant women with diabetes.Materials and methods. The study compared women with gestational diabetes mellitus, type 1 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes, to a control group of pregnant women without diabetes. In addition to clinical research methods, liquid-based cytology of the contents of the gingival sulcus was performed.Results. The results of clinical and laboratory studies have shown that inflammatory diseases of periodontium and teeth within pregnant women with diabetes are more common than within the pregnant women without this disease. It should be noted that the frequency of occurrence and severity of these diseases in the pregnant women with type I diabetes is higher than in the other groups.Conclusion. Pregnant women with diabetes are at risk for dental disease and require more attention from dentists, endocrinologists and obstetricians. The use of liquid-based cytology method helps in the diagnosis of inflammatory periodontal diseases.

Aim. Evaluation of dental diseases prevalence in professional athletes engaged in power sports and of the influence of biologically neutral products based on propolis on the level of their dental health. Methods. The examination of organs and tissues of the oral cavity of professional athletes engaged for a long time in power sports was carried out. With the use of the developed specialized questionnaire dental status of the athletes was determined. Based on the analysis of the results of clinical and laboratory studies anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effectiveness of products based on propolis were evaluated. Results. The results of the survey showed that not all athletes are informed about the possibility of aggravation of pathological processes in soft and hard tissues of oral cavity during active training, mainly, in power sports. Lack of awareness of surveyed athletes about the need for timely individual oral hygiene procedures and regular dentist visits was revealed, especially during intense training before and after competitions. On evaluation of dental status of professional combat athletes high prevalence and intensity of inflammatory periodontal disease and caries were found. High anti-inflammatory efficiency of the product «Pomegranate Balm» for correction of dental status of professional athletes was proven. Conclusion. High incidence of inflammatory periodontal diseases of mild to moderate severity was revealed in athletes during prolonged and intense physical training; efficacy of biologically neutral products based on propolis was established.

The Monizen Forte test for parasitic sheep diseases was tested under production condi-tions on 460 lambs of the North Caucasian breed, with a live weight of 25-30 kg, with high infection with nematodes, cestodes and larvae of the nasopharyngeal gadfly (Oestrus ovis), which were given orally in a mixture with half the normal rate of concentrated feed, the test drug in a dose of 1 ml per 20 kg of the animal weight. Experienced (20 ani-mals) and control (10 animals) groups of lambs with an average live weight of 28 kg were selected from these lambs according to the principle of analogues. To the lambs of the control group, the drug was not given. 10 days after administration of the drug by clini-cal and coprological studies, it was found that the lambs of the experimental group, the intensity of nematode invasion decreased and the drug’s intensity (IE) was 96.7%, and the extensivity (EE) was 95%. The lambs of the experimental group before the introduction of the drug were 40% invaded with moniesia and 50% dictiocauli, and after using Monizen Forte they were released - the ex-tensibility (EE) was 100%. Lambs of the control (untreated) group, the intensity and extent of infection with nematodes and ces-todes remained at the same level as at the beginning of the experiment. All 10 lambs (50%) of the experimental group, the clinical signs of estrosis (sneezing, snorting, serous-mucous discharge from the nose) disap- peared, and the lambs of the control group have these clinical signs persisted.

Abstract Context: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis (BON) of the jaws is a newly identified condition for which the exact mechanism involved in its pathogenesis remains obscure. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate whether diabetes mellitus (DM) may be a contributing factor in the development of BON. Design: From 2004 to 2006, 31 patients were diagnosed with BON. The diagnosis of BON was based on the medical and dental history of each patient as well as the observation of clinical signs and symptoms of this pathological process. DM was based on two consecutive fasting blood glucose levels above 7 mmol/liter. Setting: The study was completed in the Hebrew University-Hadassah Hospital referral center. Results: Of the 31 patients with BON, 18 (58%) were found to have DM or impaired fasting glucose. The proportion of diabetic patients was much higher than expected relative to the incidence of DM in the general population (14%) and compared with the proportion of diabetic patients in a control group of oncological patients treated with bisphosphonates and without BON (12%) (P = 0.00003). Conclusions: This finding indicates that DM may be a risk factor for BON and that DM patients treated with bisphosphonates should be carefully monitored. We discuss here the bone metabolic pathways characteristic of DM patients and the way in which these pathways can augment the effects of bisphosphonates.

The paper presents the results of a study of the action of Aerococcus autostrains on the model of a chronic blue pus infection. For the study of the action of Aerococcus autosymbiont strains on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, three of the most biochemically and antagonistically active isolates were selected: 1) 5m2015 (isolated from mice); 2) 3k2015 (isolated from rats); 3) 3ch2015 (isolated from humans). Experiments were conducted on 84 white outbred mice weighing 16–17 g, 60 were used as the experimental, and 24 as the control group. In the experimental group of animals, infected wounds were treated by Aerococcus autosymbiont strains once daily (0.2 billion ml–1) till recovery. The drug was administered under the eschar with a syringe. In the control animals the wound was treated by isotonic sodium chloride solution (concentration 0.9%) with the same route of administration and for the same period of time. It was found that from the very first days of application of Aerococci autosymbiont strains, perifocal inflammation was less severe in most animals in the research group compared with the control group. Starting from the fourth day of usage of Aerococcus autosymbiont strains the number of pseudomonades, contained in secretions from wounds in the experimental group of mice was significantly lower than in the control animals. It was revealed that in case of application of Aerococcus strain (5m2015) isolated from mice, the animals had better indicators of recovery, dynamics of local clinical signs of inflammation and the number of pseudomonades contained in the wound in comparison with other Aerococcus autostrains isolated from rats and humans. The wounds purified from pus and covered with dry eschar faster. For example, wounds completely healed with dry eschar rejection by the 11th day of observation in 44 of 58 surviving mice (75.9%). In the control group a similar pattern was observed in only 3 of 17 mice (17.6%) by the that period. The number of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (equivalent to 1 ml of secretions wounds), expressed in logarithms, was 5.00 ± 0.16 on average on the 4th day in the treated mice, while the control group had the same amount of pseudomonades detected in the wounds (lg 5.22 ± 0.38; lg 5.12 ± 0.30) only on the 13–14th days of observation. We found different activity of strains, depending on the origin of microorganism and type host. Aerococcus viridians autosymbionts showed higher rates in the study of their activity in terms of the blue pus infection model in the treatment of the host and lower activity in treatment.of other species. The obtained data may warrant further study of application of Aerococcus autostrains for treatment and prevention of wound infection caused by pseudomonades.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Bendamin on the antioxidant status of rats in experimental doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy. The studies were performed on white sexually mature young male of Vistar line rats weighing 180–200 g, which were kept on a standard diet of the Institute Vivarium of the State Research Institute of Veterinary Drugs and Feed Additives. Animals were divided into 3 groups of 6 animals in each: control group – intact animals; experimental group R1, in which animals were simulated with doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy by intraperitoneal administration of doxorubicin at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg 3 times a week for two weeks; experimental group R2, in which animals were injected with the drug “Bendamin” at a dose of 20 mg/kg after injection of doxorubicin. The data obtained indicate that the introduction into the experimental animals of the experimental group of doxorubicin is accompanied by intensification in the myocardium of the processes of free radical oxidation. The increase in diene conjugates was found to be 32.7% and TBK-active products increased by 37.6% compared to the control group of rats. Doxorubicin was also found to cause inhibition of the glutathione system of the animal's antioxidant protection after administration to rats. After administration of the drug “Bendamin”, rats of the second experimental group were suppressed with lipid peroxidation under the conditions of doxorubicin intoxication. In the rats of the second experimental group, the level of intermediates and end products is likely to decrease, so in the rat myocardial homogenate the level of diene conjugates decreased by 16.8% and the level of TBA-active products by 20.8% compared to the first experimental group. who had clinical signs of cardiomyopathy caused by doxorubicin administration. The use of the drug “Bendamin” in rats of the second experimental group contributed to the enhancement of the enzymatic and non-enzymatic element of the antioxidant system, protecting the structural and functional integrity of cell bioembranes. The results of the studies enrich the pharmacological characteristics of the drug “Bendamin”, indicate its sufficiently clear protective effect on the myocardium in experimental doxorubicin cardiomyopathy and is a convincing proof of the feasibility of the drug in veterinary practice.

This in vivo experimental study evaluated the efficacy of fluoride-releasing elastomers in the control of Streptococcus mutans levels in the oral cavity. Forty orthodontic patients were recruited and divided into two groups of 20. Fluoride-releasing elastomeric ligature ties (Fluor-I-Ties, Ortho Arch Co. Inc., USA) were used in the experimental group, and conventional elastomeric ligature ties (D. Morelli, Brazil), in the control group. Two initial samples of saliva were collected at a 14-day interval to determine the number of colony forming units (CFU) of Streptococcus mutans. Immediately after collecting the second sample, fluoride-releasing elastomeric ligature ties were placed in the patients of the experimental group, and conventional ligature ties, in the patients of the control group. Seven, 14 and 28 days after placement of the elastomeric ligature ties, saliva and plaque surrounding the orthodontic appliance were collected for microbiologic analysis. There were no significant differences in the number of Streptococcus mutans CFUs in saliva or plaque in the area surrounding the fluoride-releasing or conventional elastomeric ligature ties. Thus, fluoride-releasing elastomeric ligature ties should not be indicated to reduce the incidence of enamel decalcification in orthodontic patients. Since there was no significant reduction in S. mutans in saliva or plaque, other means of prevention against enamel decalcification should be indicated for these patients.

This study was undertaken to determine the effect on prematurely born infants of the feeding of strained meat. One group of infants received a standard formula; another an identical formula to which strained meat was added, and a third group was breast fed. Meat added to the diet of prematurely born infants weighing between 2000 and 6750 gm. was well accepted. There was no significant difference in the symptoms or signs of illness among the infants of either of the three groups. It was found that a plot of the body weight of such infants against age generally gives a smooth sigmoid curve. The central portion of the "S" forms a remarkably straight line. The linear portion of the curve is located in the interval between 2500 and 4500 gm. body weight. The location is relatively unaffected by either age or birth weight. The slope of this linear portion was taken as the measure of the weight gain. A similar relationship was found for the crown-heel length. These findings are not only of academic interest but are also of practical importance since they provide an unusually good tool for further nutritional and other studies. Growth as measured by rate of change of weight and length did not differ significantly between the experimental group and the control group. The breast-fed group exceeded the experimental and control groups in both weight and length gain. The greater weight gain in the breast-fed group as compared to the experimental group was statistically significant. Minimum values for red blood cell count and hemoglobin were observed at 12 weeks of age. These values rose steadily until about 20 weeks of age, at which time they became relatively stable. There was no significant difference in the hemoglobin concentration or red blood cell count between the three groups at 12 weeks of age. At 20 weeks, however, the meat-fed or experimental group exceeded the control by a significant amount. The mean difference in hemoglobin concentration of the experimental group and that of the control group was 1.0 gm./100 cc. This finding is of interest especially since the experimental and control groups both received more than adequate amounts of iron added to the diet. A gradual rise in serum protein concentration was noted with increasing age. At 12 weeks of age, the serum protein concentration for the breast-fed group was significantly lower than that for the experimental group, the average difference being 0.40 gm./100 cc. The average difference between these two groups at 20 weeks was 0.35 gm./100 cc. but there were too few in the breast-fed group at this time to give the difference statistical significance. The serum protein concentrations in the experimental and the control groups did not differ significantly at either 12 or 20 weeks of age. Analysis of the total volume intake of the formulae showed that intake of the experimental group was reduced in proportion to the greater caloric content of the meat-containing formula. The result was that the daily intake of calories was the same in both the experimental group and the control group. This remarkable reduction in volume of intake by premature infants in the weight groups concerned and the strikingly uniform caloric intake are of interest particularly in view of current thoughts on self selection of diet. No differences were noted in the weight or length gain, hemoglobin, red blood cell count, or serum protein concentration between the experimental group and the control group when the infants reached one year of age.
