AbstractDesign by analogy is a powerful part of the design process across the wide variety of modalities used by designers such as linguistic descriptions, sketches, and diagrams. We need tools to support people's ability to find and use analogies. A deeper understanding of the cognitive mechanisms underlying design and analogy is a crucial step in developing these tools. This paper presents an experiment that explores the effects of representation within the modality of sketching, the effects of functional models, and the retrieval and use of analogies. We find that the level of abstraction for the representation of prior knowledge and the representation of a current design problem both affect people's ability to retrieve and use analogous solutions. A general semantic description in memory facilitates retrieval of that prior knowledge. The ability to find and use an analogy is also facilitated by having an appropriate functional model of the problem. These studies result in a number of important implications for the development of tools to support design by analogy. Foremost among these implications is the ability to provide multiple representations of design problems by which designers may reason across, where the verb construct in the English language is a preferred mode for these representations.

The dynamic nature of the Python programming language, the accumulation of a certain linguosemiotic basis indicates the similarity of this language with the English language, which is the international one and mediates human communication in both real and virtual worlds. In this study, the English language is positioned as the linguistic basis of Python language of programming, which is widely used in industry, research, natural language processing, textual information retrieval, textual data processing, texts corpora, and more. English language, its lexical features, text representation and interaction with logical and functional basis in the context of Python programming language are considered further in this research. Thus, the unity of verbal units and symbols in the modern English-language digital discourse indicates both the order and variability of the constituents therein. The functionality of linguosemiotic elements produces a network of relationships, where each of these integrated elements can produce from a word or symbol a holistic set of units, which are extrapolated in the English-language digital discourse and mediates human communication with a machine. An overview of the basic properties of Python language, such as values, types, expressions, and operations are in focus of the study. Though users understand the responses of Python interpreter, there is a need to follow certain instructions and codes. To facilitate work with this programming language and prescribed English-language commands, it is necessary to involve linguists to cooperate with programmers to invent a certain logical and reasonable principle of Python commands operation.

The article deals with cognitive models underlying the process of plant categorization by the speakers. Having analyzed 200 names of herbs and flowers in English, the authors differentiated three cognitive models, which the phytonyms categorization is based on: metaphoric, metonymic and propositional. It is shown that "the codes of culture", or in other words, well-known realia, are used as sources for nomination; on their basis typical cognitive models are formed. Since the names of flowers and herbs in the English language are mostly compound words, the identified cognitive models are described taking into account the action of the cognitive word-formation mechanisms of proverse and reverse. The first mechanism structure of a phytonym presupposes the direct order of compound-word components as a result of the initial word-combination integration. This word building mechanism is typical of the compound structures "adjective / verb + noun". The reversive mechanism represents the inner structure of a phytonym as a result of reverse transformation of the word-combination initial components. This type of mechanism is characteristic of the phytonyms created on the basis of the structures "noun + noun", "noun + ' + noun". The article describes the models of proverse and reverse structuring, which are typical of English phytonyms. The prospects of the research are to study the cognitive models and mechanisms underlying plant nomination in a comparative aspect based on the material of several languages.

The article is devoted to the research of ethnic peculiarities of reality conceptualization, objectified with the help of culturally marked words denoting a widow, which form the corresponding parts of the Ukrainian and English language world models. Purpose. The purpose of the research is to give a contrastive analysis of the verbalizations of the concept WIDOW in Ukrainian and English linguocultures.Methods. The paper uses a comprehensive methodology that combines the following methods: contrastive – to identify common and distinctive features of the concept of WIDOW in the languages under comparison; conceptual-semiotic analysis – to reveal the cognitive mechanisms of the embodiment of the concept; contextual-interpretive analysis – to clarify the peculiarities of the representation of the concept in paremiae.Results. In the highlight of contrastive ethnolinguistic studies and theory of conceptual analysis, is there performed and revealed a structure-semantic reconstruction of the concept of WIDOW, as well as the principles of its semantic-conceptual organization in the English and Ukrainian language pictures of the world. The set of the conceptual and semantic marks is determined, due to the concept structure constituents (conceptual proper, imagery-associative and value), the main ideographic conceptual domains are revealed, the analyzed concept being axiologically marked and its associative linkage, due to the scope of its conceptual correlates are determined.Factors that influence on the conceptualization of the objective reality by the given ethnic groups are determined. Certain ethnocultural and ethnolinguistic peculiarities and general characteristics of verbalization of the concept WIDOW peculiar to both languages are found out. Conclusions. The analyses of widow nominations showed the allomorphism of national peculiarities of reality conceptualization, which are influenced by archetype types, historical and cultural actuality. It is shown that WIDOW in Ukrainian culture can be viewed as a taboo concept which content is marked by negative axiological status due to the socio-cultural views formed in the period predetermining the inadmissibility of its direct naming in relevant social situations.Key words: culturally marked words, language world model, taboo concept, ethnic mentality, widow’s image, conceptual mark. Стаття присвячена вивченню етнічних особливостей концептуалізації дійсності, об’єктивованих у культурно маркованих лексичних одиницях на позначення жінки-вдови, що утворюють відповідні фрагменти української та англійської національно-мовних картин світу. We center on the study of the phraseological units semantics from cognitive positions. In particular, attention is paid to information about person physical characteristics represented by phraseological units of the English language containing somatisms, as well as the names of food, clothing and furniture. As phraseological units representing information about physical characteristics we consider those units which represent information about the properties of the body and/or appearance of the human body. The aim of the study is to identify semantic features of these phraseological units, as well as to consider the cognitive mechanisms of their development. During the study of the given phraseological units semantics, the following semantic groups are distinguished: 1) the structure of the human body; 2) age; 3) appearance; 4) the physical/physiological characteristics of the person. In the course of studying the factual material, it is established that the main mechanisms for the development of the meaning of the studied phraseological units are cognitive metaphor, metonymy and metaphtonymy. It is concluded that when comprehending human physical properties, a reference is made both to the very conceptual field of HUMAN and to other conceptual fields involved in the processes of reinterpretation. These may include the conceptual fields FOOD, CLOTHING, FURNITURE, PLANT, ANIMAL.

The article examines the linguistic aspects of the process of borrowing terms from the English language into the sports sphere of the German language from the perspective of a cognitive approach. It analyses the features of cognitive interaction of the conceptual systems of professional spheres. The paper describes transformation models of cognitive structures into the recipient language in the process of terminological borrowing on the material of sports Anglicisms of the German language. The study shows that loanwords most often convey a conceptual structure in the recipient language, which is generated on the basis of already existing mental structures in the source language. Various cognitive models of the transformation of the “alien” concept are defined: preserving the original structure of the prototype concept; developing new conceptual features in the recipient language; narrowing the conceptual structure of the concept prototype. The research contributes to the problem of the representation of knowledge in a term, the identification of linguistic and cognitive mechanisms of knowledge representation through borrowed linguistic units. The results can be used in the courses on cognitive linguistics, lexicology, in research practice and lexicographical descriptions, as well as in teaching practical language skills in professional sports. Keywords: Borrowing, terms, sports terminology, cognitive terminology, professional knowledge.

Phraseological units are a significant element of English. Being culturally conditioned, these units reflect the peculiarities of conceptualization of reality by native speakers. We substantiate the possibility of teaching the phraseological level of English on a linguocognitive basis within the framework of the communicative-cognitive approach. The importance and prospects of the communicative-cognitive approach to teaching English in the current educational reality has been substantiated. We present experimental studies that prove the high potential of foreign language learning on a linguocognitive basis. Classifications of phraseological units in the English language, proposed both in the field of traditional linguistics and cognitive linguistics, are considered. The study connects idiomatic expressions with cognitive mechanisms such as conceptual metaphor and provides examples of conceptual metaphors in English in relation to respective idiomatic expressions. We describe successful experimental studies on teaching English phraseological units on a linguocognitive basis. The importance of group work in the study of English phraseological units is substantiated and an example of the distribution of roles during group work is provided. The study considers possible difficulties and peculiarities of teaching English phraseological units and suggests ways of overcoming them. The study substantiates the importance of using cognitive linguistics as a linguistic basis for teaching English based on the communicative-cognitive approach.

The article analyses the cognitive mechanisms of interpretation of the literary text viewed in the context of discourse interaction. As the article shows, being the elements of discourse, the cognitive structures determine the procedures of interpretation of the literary text. Viewed from the cognitive aspect, such interpretation consists in constituting new cognitive images in the reader’s mind on the basis of various discourse markers (scientific terms, syntactic patterns, etc.). The article demonstrates on the material of the English language the role of cognitive scripts, belonging to the scientific worldview, in arranging the plot of the literary text. The phenomenon of interpretation finds its manifestation in filling in the slots of the cognitive script in the process of reading the text. Considering the semantic potential of scientific discourse markers, the author reveals the influence of the scientific worldview on the literary world picture. The analysis of text fragments enables the author to conclude that the study of discourse interaction can prove useful in text analysis as it may help revealing the specificity of an author’s idiostyle and a reader’s interpretation of the text.

The article deals with the cognitive mechanisms of using metaphor in veterinary terminology of English language. The material of the study was the terms-metaphors of the terminological field of "animal diseases". Based on the theory of conceptual metaphor, the main donor zones, which served as a source of metaphorical nominations for the designation of animal diseases, were identified within the field under study. The types of metaphorical transferences (structural, gestalt, diffuse) that exist in the terminological field "animal diseases" are characterized. The main categories of varieties of metaphorization of the studied terminological field are analyzed. It is concluded that the processes of metaphorization demonstrated extraordinary activity in terminology, being based on the use of signs of some subject spheres to refer to others. The Gestalt variety was dominant in the process. It was established that the donor zone HUMAN is the most productive one for making terms-metaphors to designate animal diseases since human consciousness is prone to percept an outer world in close association with personal experience of biological and social character. Productive to the English terms of the terminological field of "animal diseases" is the conceptual sphere ARTIFACT as a man-made object. Gestalt metaphorical variation based on the use of visual and auditory gestalt is relevant to this donor zone. For the formation of metaphor terms, the most typical one is visual gestures based on the external similarity of animal disease symptoms to man-made objects, or as a result of their associations with artifact coloring. In the terminological field "animal diseases", this group includes such names as coronavirus infection – "coronaviruses most commonly affect cattle, birds, cats, dogs and humans. The shape of the coronavirus is reminiscent of balls with large (about 20 nanometers) tentacle projections arranged in the form of a solar corona, for which they are called», pastous (from lat. Pastosus – doughlike ) – swollen, portals of infection – "place of penetration of pathogenic microbe in the body" drum belly –"excessive accumulation of gases in the intestine caused by increased fermentation processes and impairment of its motor-secretory function"), laky blood - «destruction of the stroma of erythra of oocytes with the excretion of hemoglobin.
