This study which is a semiotic analysis of the poems of Joyce Kilmer had discovered through the use of Barth’s Denotation-Connotation Theory the use of both literal and non-literal meanings of some important recurring words in Kilmer’s poems. The recurring words serving as leitmotifs were therefore subjected to semiotic analysis and interpretation.  The study did explore, therefore, the signs (visual images in the poems) by giving the signifier and the signified of some word/s as signs. With the Denotation-Connotation of the word, it even led the researcher to a new level of signified – something higher in meaning than the two, connotative still.  Moreover, the use of semiotic analysis of the poems even became a tool to= experience side benefits of the study – that is, giving a researcher a cue that Joyce Kilmer's poems revolved around nature, God as thematic content with emotion overflowing in the literary opuses. Thus, with the side benefits, the researcher was even led further to realize that the poet (Joyce Kilmer) belonged to the Romantic Era of the literary movement.

This study conducts a social semiotic analysis of the online city guide of Guangzhou. Drawing on Martin’s Appraisal theory with a particular focus on the semantic systems of attitude and graduation, this paper investigates the attitudinal meanings adjusted by graduation in both modes of language and visual images. It is revealed that positive appreciation resources are dominant among the three subsystems of attitude, with the pervasive use of reaction and valuation resources to stimulate tourist desires and promote unique identity of the city. Graduation resources, especially force, couple with attitude resources to upscale the positivity of the attitude and strongly align the readers into the same value position. The language and images in most cases coordinate with each other, with the evaluative meanings of visual images elaborating or extending those of verbal texts, whereas complementary intermodal relation exists in some cases, with the evaluative meanings conveyed by visual images and the verbal texts merely offering factual information. The findings may help to better understand the way online city guides achieve the communicative purposes through multimodal evaluative devices.

The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method with Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis approach, which examines signs through three stages of analysis namely denotation, connotation, mythology. The results of this study might reveal that the magazine cover of this edition shows the properties possessed by Mr. Jokowi as seen from the depiction of the face shape in the illustrations. The meaning of denotation, both the meaning of shadow, clothing and expression is illustrated, that the tempo magazine is a critical medium with the constitution and the spirit of democracy. In the context of the role of culture in language learning, many textbook analysts have so far investigated the representations of cultures in EFL textbooks. Most of the previous findings on the study of culture indicate that EFL textbooks contain more about the cultures of inner circle countries compared to the expanding and outer circle countries. In Indonesia, this area of cultural issues in English textbooks appears to be underexplored. To narrow the gap, this study using the visual semiotic theory of Barthes (1977) examined the multicultural values represented in an Indonesian vocational high school English textbook through the visual images in the textbook. This study shows that there are four categories of multicultural values represented in the EFL textbook: respecting other people’s tradition, appreciating other people’s perspectives, appreciating other people’s cultural products, and appreciating women’s equal rights. These insights give students opportunities to enhance their intercultural communication competence (ICC) by appreciating cultural diversity and accepting racial and religious differences around them.

This study focuses on the connection between social representations of history and collective memory from the perspective of elementary concepts of social representations theory: anchoring, objectification and naturalization. The aims of the study are to arrive at a conceptual clarity of this connection and demonstrate how to apply basic concepts of social representations theory to the study of collective memory. The study also focuses on the naturalized characteristics of Finnish history. The data consist of the covers of twenty Finnish history books between the years 1965 and 2014. All the covers are embellished with typography or visual images. The covers were analysed using a semiotic approach in which the interest is in the description (denotation), the associations (connotation) and the meaning system these construe (myth). The analysis shows how national history is concretized with visual images (objectification), how the meaning of representation is conveyed (anchoring) and how collective memory is maintained (naturalization), transmitted and shaped during the years. The results show how the stable collective memories and changing social representations of history are interacting. The most frequently used visual element was the colour blue, which alludes to the Finnish flag, a symbol of the nation that represents the core of Finnish history. The study suggests that it is possible to conceptualize collective memories as naturalized social representations of history. It shows how processes of anchoring and objectification serve as tools of collective memory and how the naturalized conceptions are subtly changed. In addition, the study develops the use of visual semiotic analysis in social representations research.

The purpose of the article is to comprehend the features of "artistic" and "visual" images in contemporary art. Methodology. The main methodological approach is the cultural-semiotic analysis of the forms of manifestation of visualization of contemporary art culture. The application of a systematic approach allowed us to study semiotic systems that contribute to the comprehensive disclosure of the problem of the semantics of modern forms of visualization. The integrative approach has enabled research in new forms of visualization of modern artistic language, which combines informational and aesthetic functions. System-value and historical-typological approaches allowed to reveal the role and functions of public art in the formation of image-plot structure in modern Ukrainian culture. Due to the revealed changes, traditional images are visualized with the help of a new artistic language, which does not correspond to the traditional meanings of the artistic image. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the expansion of the features of "artistic" and "visual" images in modern fine arts. In particular, it is noted that today’s culture changes its direction from verbal to visual communication, so the main task of the artistic image is a visual way of transmitting information and communicating with the audience at a certain cultural level. Artistic images are means of transmitting and transmitting information that are inextricably linked to the cultural context, they always go beyond a simple depiction of reality and are rather elitist in nature. At the same time, visual images address society in a visual and familiar visual language, communicating with the viewer, visualizing certain information or idea. Conclusions. Therefore, artistic and visual images have both common points and differences: the visual image, in fact, is a component of the artistic image and differs from it by certain objectivity and generalization. Contemporary artists work on the border between visuality and artistic image, filling their works with various social and aesthetic functions. However, in order to understand artistic images, the viewer, as a rule, must be informationally and culturally prepared, and visual images must be easily perceived by the public.

This study aimed at examining how male and female identities are constructed using visual images posted in particular Facebook Groups frequented by Kenyans. To this end, the theory of Visual Social Semiotics by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996; 2006) was employed in the interpretation of data. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed where particular features of the images were identified, described and interpreted. A total of six images were purposively selected from five Facebook Groups and a content analysis, with a checklist used to identify relevant features for analysis. The study found out that there is a major change in the identities of both males and females. Even though there was a desire by men to retain their dominant position, the images showed a shift from the traditional muscular, strong, powerful and macho male towards a vulnerable, weak and prone-to-criminal acts man. Female’s identities have also changed from the traditional one, who was always associated with the kitchen, child birth towards a more assertive, powerful and professional identity. As a result, the study recommends that the Kenyan society ought to take a more serious look into the welfare of the boy-child as it appears that the boy child has been left behind by a more-empowered Kenyan girl.

The purpose of the article is to study the types of artistic creativity in modern fine arts, taking into account the specifics of media arts. The methodology is the cultural-semiotic analysis of the forms of manifestation of visualization of modern art culture. The application of a systematic approach allowed us to study semiotic systems that contribute to the comprehensive disclosure of the problem of the semantics of modern forms of visualization. The scientific novelty of the work is to understand the specifics of the new media arts, taking into account their interactivity, network communication, and virtuality. Conclusions. The interaction of visual art forms and interactive technologies is a combination of artistic manifestations with visualization and programming, so, unlike the processes of classical education, this art practice, in addition to the artist, requires group work of specialists in various fields. Artists working in new forms of visual art play the role of "director" of the project, embodying their own artistic ideas in collaboration with other participants. The actualization of the art of new media is manifested primarily through the expansion of artistic creativity and the creation of multimedia projects that combine VR, AR technology, animation, and traditional shaping and drawing. Therefore, modern visual arts are becoming a powerful tool and communicative tool of modern culture. Today, Ukrainian artists are actively using visual images as central elements of visual culture. Since modern cultural communication significantly influences the formation, providing the composition and translation of cultural values, with the help of visual images artists are able to more accurately express the idea of the work, to make it understandable to the maximum number of viewers.
