The objective was to determine the effect of Brassica oleracea var Botrytis "cauliflower" inflorescences on cachectic syndrome in Mus musculus var. swiss with induced cancer. Cachectic syndrome is characterized by progressive loss of body weight, anorexia, asthenia, immunosuppression and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, with loss of muscle and adipose tissue. It used dry cauliflower inflorescence extract (ESC) and male mice 35-45 g with induced cancer, divided into groups: G1 untreated control, G2 and G3 treated with ESC, doses 10 and 20mg/kg/bw/vo and G4 treated with quercitin, dose 7.14mg/Kg/bw/vo for 90 days. Some manifestations of cachectic syndrome were determined. It was observed that G1 had thinning and progressive increase in alopecia, asthenia and conjunctival xerosis due to energy and metabolic imbalance compared to G2, G3 and G4 that had higher body weight and fewer cachectic manifestations, being significant by time and treatment group (P<0.01). It has been reported that cauliflower contains flavonoids quercitin and kaemferol, with anti-inflammatory properties for its action on cyclooxygenase, lipooxygenase, interleukins and chemosins, with antioxidant properties on intracellular glutathione, in redox reactions and favoring the expression of caspases in cell apoptosis. Therefore, it is concluded that cauliflower prevents body weight loss and decreases cachectic syndrome because it contains kaempferol and quercitin that act synergistically with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties.

Eugenol is a phenolic aromatic compound obtained mainly from clove oil. Due to its known antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it has long been used in various areas, such as cosmetology, medicine, and pharmacology. However, high concentrations can be toxic. A dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight is regarded as safe. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge regarding the activities and application of eugenol and its derivatives and recent research of these compounds. This review is based on information concerning eugenol characteristics and recent research from articles in PubMed. Eugenol remains of great interest to researchers, since its multidirectional action allows it to be a potential component of drugs and other products with therapeutic potential against a range of diseases.

The use of foodstuff as natural medicines has already been established through studies demonstrating the pharmacological activities that they exhibit. Knowing the nutritional and pharmacological significance of foods enables the understanding of their role against several diseases. Among the foods that can potentially be considered as medicine, is sesame or Sesamum indicum L., which is part of the Pedaliaceae family and is composed of its lignans such as sesamin, sesamol, sesaminol and sesamolin. Its lignans have been widely studied and are known to possess antiaging, anticancer, antidiabetes, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Modern chronic diseases, which can transform into clinical diseases, are potential targets of these lignans. The prime example of chronic diseases is rheumatic inflammatory diseases, which affect the support structures and the organs of the body and can also develop into malignancies. In line with this, studies emphasizing the anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities of sesame have been discussed in this review.

Medicinal herbs have been effectively used for their anti-inflammatory activity, but their exact role has not yet been documented in scientific literature for the management of Osteoarthritis (OA). Since Sida cordifolia L., Piper longum L., Zingiber officinale Rosc., Ricinus communis L., Vitex negundo L. and Tribulus terrestris L. have been widely used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory activity, to evaluate anti-osteoarthritic activity of these herbs, we used a collagenase type II-induced osteoarthritis (CIOA) rat model. Arthritis was induced in wistar rats by intra-articular injection of collagenase type II. Powders of herbs were given orally for 20 days as a suspension in water (270 mg/kg b. wt.). The effects of the treatment in the rats were monitored by physiological parameters like body weight, knee diameter, paw retraction, paw volume, glycosaminoglycan (GAG) release, radiography and histopathology of knee joint. Selected herbs have significantly prevented body weight loss and knee swelling compared to arthritic control (CIOA). All test groups, including indomethacin (standard drug, 3 mg/kg), significantly reduced paw volume compared to CIOA. GAG release in the serum was significantly lowered in herb treated groups compared to indomethacin. The anterior posterior radiographs of S. cordifolia and P. longum treated groups showed a protective effect against OA. Histopathology revealed protection in the structure of the articular cartilage and in chondrocyte pathology as well as reduced clefting. Treatment with herbs has shown chondroid matrix within normal limits. From the results, we observed that S. cordifolia and P. longum possess potent anti-osteoarthritic activity.

Abstract This study sought to explore the medicinal properties of extracts obtained from C. edulis seeds. The seeds were obtained from farms in the Upper East Region of Ghana, dried and milled into coarse powder. Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol were used to extract the bioactive compounds present in the seeds by the cold maceration method. Antioxidant properties of the extracts were evaluated using the Phosphomolybdenum and DPPH free radical scavenging assays. The Folin-Ciocalteu assay was used to estimate the total phenol content and carrageenan-induced paw oedema model in chicks employed for the anti-inflammatory effects. The results showed that methanol extract had the highest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities while the petroleum ether extract showed the least activity. The anti-inflammatory activity of the methanol extract (31.3% oedema inhibition at 300 mg/kg body weight) was however lower than diclofenac (54.04% oedema inhibition at 100 mg/kg body weight), the reference drug. Compounds such as tannins, alkaloids, and carotenoids detected during phytochemical screening may be responsible for the activities observed.

Abstract Extensive use of chemicals in personal care products has led to many health issues. Diethanolamine is one of such harmful chemicals containing two highly functional groups alcohol and amine that requires toxicological evaluation and its mitigation. Swiss strain albino mice were used and divided into different control and treated groups. Different doses of DEA (110, 165 and 330 mg/kg body weight/day) were orally administered for 30 days. Biochemical and histopathological assessments were performed at the end of the treatment. Results collectively revealed body weight loss as well as significant increase in absolute and relative liver weight in DEA-treated groups. Biochemical analysis revealed that DEA treatment further promotes significant (P<0.05), dose-dependent increase in lipid and cholesterol contents and also cause decrease in protein and glycogen content. Histopathological assessment confirms vacuole formation due to accumulation of lipid within the liver tissue. Administration of curcumin (10, 20 and 30 mg/kg body weight/day) along with high dose of DEA (330 mg/kg body weight/day) showed improved values of lipid, cholesterol, protein and glycogen contents. It also helped retaining normal histological structure of liver. Observations in all groups and results indicate DEA-treatment causes hepatic steatosis and treatment of curcumin attenuated effect of DEA that is due to its potential antioxidant properties.

Blood cancer (leukemia) is a cancer that occurs due to malignancy of blood cells. Treatment of leukemia generally causes damage to normal cells. Therefore, it needs a drug that has the effect of repairing cell damage and the ability to boost immunity of normal such as taurine and Gynura leaves which are expected to have anticancer and antioxidant properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of taurine and dewa leaf extract on blood tissues induced by benzo [α] pyrene in vivo, by looking at changes in body weight, the number of red blood cells (erythrocytes), the total number and differentiation of white blood cells (leukocytes) in mice (Mus musculus). Data were analyzed by One Way ANOVA test followed by LSD at 5% significance level. The treatment groups were the group I was given 0.2 mL of corn oil (negative control), group II (given benzo [α] pyrene as a positive control, Group III (given taurine 7.8 mg/BW/day starting from day 1 to 15 before the induction of benzo [α] pyrene until the end of the study), Group IV was given benzo [α] pyrene, then were given taurine 7.8 mg/BW/day were given 2 times a day, as well as the V group was given benzo [α] pyrene, then given a dose of Gynura leaf extract 277.8 mg /BW/day. The results showed taurine and Gynura leaf extract were able to obstruct leukemia by increasing body weight, erythrocyte, leukocyte, and the number of leukocyte differentiation which becomes normal again. In conclusion taurine has better ability for therapoitic than Gynura leaf extact against blood cells induced by benzo[α]piren
