The social media have become part and parcel of the modern society, as they are a social communication channel. Using social networks for connecting to potential users have been increasingly important for the libraries. The libraries have been setting up groups and accounts in the social media to connect to their users, to draw attention to their work and to widen its scope. The university libraries, like many other libraries of educational institutions, participate in the process. The author analyzes the experience of Perm State Humanitarian Pedagogical University with VKontakte network subscribers group in 2013-2018. The general statistical data characterize group evolution during the selected period; dynamics of views, and the viral coverage and subscribers group coverage are provided. The author examines the administration mistakes that result in the loss of subscribers; she reviews the experience of attracting users, and rules for content presentation. She concludes that group success is determined by interesting and quality content relevant to the group aims and tasks; that the librarian in charge must be familiar with the principles of social group administering and content generation in accordance with the library’s goals and tasks.

One of the innovations in the social media landscape is the proliferation of confession pages on Facebook which allow social media users to “confess” their thoughts, feelings and experiences without revealing their true identity. Confession pages associated with specific higher educational institutions have become a venue for student revelations about everything and anything pertaining to campus life. This multiple case study ventured to find out if the university confession page serves as a peep hole into institutional culture as revealed by the confessions made by users on Facebook and also to figure out whether users’ perception about their own school as well as other schools is affected by the content that they read on university confession pages. The study selected three higher educational institutions in Davao City as its locale. To obtain thick descriptions of this phenomenon, the researchers triangulated between transcripts of conducted focus group discussions, and open- ended questionnaires and content analysis of actual posts from the selected university confession pages. The data revealed that the cloak of anonymity and absence of direct consequence emboldens those who “confess” and serves much like a freedom wall. The study also reveals that while most informants used the confession page because it is the current “in” thing, reading the posts somewhat changed their perception about their school as the hallowed hall of learning as some posts shed light on events and experiences on campus.

Keywords: Communication, Social media, Facebook, confession pages, descriptive qualitative, Philippines

Collection of data for this study was done with in-depth interviews with certain informants, based on a criteria established previously by the author, beside an observation upon social media accounts that were used for Fight the Haze campaign. The result shows that the involvement of networks in social media affects the effectivity of Fight the Haze campaign. Also, the social relation between organizations that are united under the alliance of Fight the Haze campaign are based on sentimental network.

Purpose Given the form of functional differentiation of modern society, a far-reaching coordination of functional systems as a dissolution of their heterarchical relationship to each other, as was apparently possible in the social “lockdown” during the corona pandemic, should have been extremely unlikely. The purpose of this study is to explain how this was nevertheless achieved. Design/methodology/approach From the perspective of systems theory, social action in principle does not present itself as a problem but as a solution to (latent) social problems. In the sociological analysis presented here, it is therefore precisely a matter of uncovering or pointing out those (changed) social structures in which a social “lockdown” appears as a solution. Findings The paper explains that with the emergence of social media through applications such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, a new force is establishing itself at the level of society as a system. It is one that is characterized by being highly vulnerable to moral communication. A susceptibility to morality manifests, on the one hand, through an individual differentiation of society made possible by social media – for example, in the emerging Chinese social credit system – and, on the other hand, through the specific communicative structures of the social media themselves. It is argued that social media, in the form of a moral authority with a lasting effect on society as a whole, make a significant contribution to realizing the social “lockdown.” Originality/value The originality of the paper results from the fact that the emergence of a new social phenomenon (“lockdown”) is explained.

Social media is principally used by students in the private sphere. However, its implementation for educational purposes in higher education is rapidly expanding. This chapter looks into undergraduate students’ perceptions of using social media in the university context. In particular, it examines students’ privacy concerns regarding faculty use of social networks to support classroom work and video calling or online chats to meet for work discussion. Two-hundred-forty-four undergraduate students completed a survey and four focus groups were carried out. The results reveal that although students generally accept using social media in the instructional arena, privacy concerns can easily emerge. Educational institutions are encouraged to take these concerns seriously. Using applications specifically created for learning purposes and developing some guidelines for a correct implementation of these resources for the faculty to follow might contribute to alleviate these concerns.

This article examines the radicalization of young adults in relation to internet access and the social media content produced and managed by radical groups in Indonesia. Some of the research problems that become the major concern of this article were how young people respond to the internet and social media that provide radical content, how they find out about and access the content, what their purposes are for accessing radical content, and what they do with the radical content. The data discussed in this article were obtained from surveys and interviews with 700 students from seven state universities in Indonesia who were allegedly exposed to radicalism, according to the National Agency for Combating Terrorism (BNPT). The state universities that became research locations were the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Bogor Agriculture University (IPB), Diponegoro University (Undip), the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), and the University of Brawijaya (UB). This study revealed that in addition to accessing and consuming various radical content, some students also acted as prosumers. That is, they did not only read, but also produced information related to radicalization, and then recirculated it via social media.
