This paper continues a conversation begun in this Journal between Pierre Cachia, as therapist, and Jill Scharff, his writing partner (Cachia & Scharff, 2013). Their account of a couple who lost joy focused on a turning point in the mid-phase of therapy. In this article, the authors focus on the planned ending of that couple's therapy. Ideas on ending from the individual analytic literature are discussed in terms of their application to couple therapy and various criteria are presented for consideration when assessing whether a couple is ready to finish treatment. Pierre Cachia presents the process of a late phase session to illustrate in detail the theory and technique of a planned ending of couple therapy. In a shared voice, the authors conclude by tying theory and clinical example together.

1. Long-term studies of gastrointestinal radio-calcium absorption were undertaken in adult greyhounds before and during two treatment regimes with human parathyroid hormone fragment 1–34 (hPTH 1–34). The results were correlated with plasma vitamin D metabolite levels and kinetic indices related to the balance of fluxes of calcium between plasma and the rapidly exchangeable calcium pools of bone. 2. Compared with adult man, results obtained before treatment started showed lower indices of gastrointestinal calcium absorption and considerably higher concentrations of 24-hydroxycalcidiol in the dogs. 3. Daily injections of hPTH 1–34 at 1.7 μg day−1 kg−1 significantly increased indices of radiocalcium absorption and plasma calcitriol concentrations, while only causing transient calcaemic responses. The individual magnitudes of the calcaemic response correlated positively with indices of radiocalcium retention in the exchangeable pools of bone which in turn correlated positively with ‘late-phase’ absorption of radiocalcium from the gut. 4. Subcutaneous infusions of hPTH 1–34 at 0.5 μg day−1 kg−1 to the same dogs were just insufficient to cause hypercalcaemia, but increased plasma calcitriol concentrations. Indices of radiocalcium absorption were not increased. 5. Continuous parathyroid hormone (PTH) infusion is now known to substantially down-regulate renal PTH receptor density, whereas recovery after a brief exposure to PTH occurs within 24 h. It is possible that the differences in response of the gut to the two regimes may in part be related to their differing effects on some PTH receptors.

The 20th century is the aeon for the social and national liberation of the individual. Freedom is a boon and basic right of every individual’s existence. Human freedom is infringed by certain social and economic order. This research paper undertakes the task to reveal the reasons behind the pandemonium of humankind living in capitalism; the basic fact for the rise and development of socialism around the globe. This paper is divided into six parts. Part I is introduction. Part II deals with historical need to replace capitalism by socialism. Part III explores the economic decisive factors in capitalism. Part IV explores the economic decisive factors in socialism. Part V leads to threats of neo-colonialism. Part VI is conclusion. This research finally leads to the conclusion that socialism is the system for the abolition of regime of exploitation created by capitalism. It aims at transforming a just society based upon principles of equality, fraternity, democracy and fair play.

This article is based on the hypothesis that at the present time, at the turn of the millennium, the fire that man began to use at the dawn of his history is extinguished forever. Man, using technologies that transform and replace open fire, has thus come to an important turning point in evolution, changing many of the fundamental elements of his life under the sign of which society, culture, and mythology have developed since primitive times. The disappearance of living flame from everyday (domestic and other) life marks a great transition, leading in the near future to the complete loss of centuries-old forms and practices that marked the rhythm of human life and activity. The lack of living fire, which becomes more and more unnoticeable, invisible, immaterial, causes desolation. This is a turning point, some consequences of which we are already beginning to observe, and which has brought to light a number of subjective and collective decisions (sometimes palliative) that demonstrate how important this problem is for the affective life of both the individual and for humanity as a whole. The disappearance of fire from our lives is an important cognitive problem that we shall have to deal with in order to overcome an existential crisis (material and non-material, affective and logical), the outcome of which will determine the culture of future generations.

In evolution, an increase in the integration of individual and differentiation of its cells occurred. It reduced the ability of cells to redifferentiate. At a certain stage of this decline, the individual lost the ancestral ability to rejuvenate and multiply. This loss is a turning point in evolution. It increased the speed of evolution and the adaptability of Metazoa to environmental changes.

Much of the current literature on integrating sustainability into HEIs is focussed on why HEIs should embrace sustainable development (SD) and what is still missing or hindering work and the integration of efforts. There is much less exploration of how SD has been interpreted at the individual HEI level and action taken as a result. This case study reflects on important elements of the journey Nottingham Trent University (NTU) in the UK has taken to integrate sustainability, focussing on key decisions and activity in 2009/10. In highlighting this, the authors seek to empower those looking to support and/or lead the embedding of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), separately or as part of an integrated effort, in their own institution. Today in 2019, NTU is a global leader in integrating ESD as part of a wider SD agenda. The work which this paper presents, to understand and establish a baseline of key elements of NTU’s existing ESD activity and systems, was an important turning point.  Activities undertaken to review and assess ‘where are we now?’, primarily through an institution-wide survey in 2009/10, led to important insights and supported dialogue, as well as the connection and underpinning of core administrative elements of the NTU SD framework and systems. Further recommendations are given in the final section of this paper on other drivers that can help to embed ESD within an HEI.

This artіcle provides theoretical analysis of crіsіs of personalіty. It deals with analysіs of understandіng of the concept of crisis іn psychological scіеnce. Taking into account the situation, connected with economic and environmental issues, political crisis and wars, which appeared in the world, researching the topic of crisis and crisis interventions are necessary and important. Сrisis as a factor in the formation of personality and position in life how to overcome it, includіng different methods and ways of experiencing. Modern scientific works of local and foreign psychologists have been observed and the main ideas are presented in the chapters of this article. There was reviewed existing psychological literature in modеrn interprеtation for making dеfinition of the tеrm crisis. The articlе gives theoretical research concеpt of crisis in general. Information about various factors and reasons for appearing crisis in mature age presented in this article as well. Crisis is considеred as the boundary situation. The crisis of identity is sеen as a turning point in human lifе path. The purpose of my paper is to deal with the significant aspects related to engaging and treating couples with high levels of aggression and violence. In particular, the main focus of my work is to examine closely the traits and characteristics of the field that is created by the convergence of the respective subjectivity of partners and therapist from a relational and intersubjective perspective. The violence that penetrates the triadic relationship during the session is observed in its formational aspects in the here and now, as well as actualisation of traumatic events suffered by one or both partners. Rage and aggressiveness can be understood more clearly and treated like emerging emotional states, with the aim of increasing the transformative potential. These emotional states are reactivated by the relationship that is co-created by the components of the triadic relationship. Particular attention will be placed on countertransferential receptiveness, on the manner in which the therapist comes into contact with the often extreme and primal emotional states of the couple, on the impact and the effect that these have on his mind, on how they can be recognised and understood in the context of projective echoes, and, last, traced back to their historical significance. By means of these procedures, a solid therapeutic alliance may be developed with the couple. It is an alliance that becomes a fundamental reorganisation element of healing aspects, belonging to both the individual Self and the conjugal Self.

Berlin discerns three great crises in Western political thought, each challenging one of its three primary tenets. The three tenets are (1) that questions about correct human actions are answerable, whether the answers are yet known or not; (2) that the answers to those questions, insofar as they are true, cannot contradict each other; and (3) that human beings have a distinctive character, which is essentially social. Each of these tenets has been attacked, the first by the German Romantics of the late eighteenth century, the second by Machiavelli in sixteenth-century Florence, and the third by the Epicureans and Stoics in the late fourth-century BCE. Berlin’s extended examination of this third case demonstrates both how firmly established was the idea that human beings found meaning only in relation to others in the polis and how great and sudden was the transition toward focus on the individual fostered by the Cynics, Epicureans, and Stoics. The suddenness and irruptive nature of this transition cannot be satisfactorily understood as a reflection of political changes alone, but its deeper roots are obscured by the dominance of Plato, Aristotle, and others who subscribed to the polis-centered point of view and regarded possible precursors of the transition as their philosophical opponents.

The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 marked a turning point in the statutory rights of people who may lack capacity. The legislation sought to place the individual at the centre of decision-making and was viewed as having the potential to give people a voice and an opportunity to be heard. Section 44 of the legislation introduced a criminal offence of ‘ill treatment or neglect’ of a person who lacks capacity. The maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment (or a fine or both) was intended to underly the seriousness of the offence, especially considering the vulnerability of potential victims. Interpreting s 44 has, however, proved a real challenge and the courts have acknowledged the difficulties which its drafting presents. The recent Court of Appeal (COA) decision in R v Kurtz is illustrative of the kind of issue that the statute has generated. The court was tasked with deciding whether proving a lack of capacity on the part of the victim is required when the donee of a power of attorney is charged with the offence under s 44(1)(b). This article considers Kurtz within the context of the MCA 2005 and notes three related COA decisions. It examines what impact Kurtz may have on future prosecutions brought under s 44(1)(b) and considers the future of the s 44 criminal charge more generally.

This article discusses the sexual script of Israeli sex industry consumers who self-identify as addicts. It argues that the ‘addict sexual script’ provides both an explanation for out of control sexual behaviour and a channel for expressing the individual client’s ‘right’ to be acknowledged for their suffering in the process of buying sex. Thus, the addict sexual script becomes a coping strategy that, while internalising sex consumption as socially deviant behaviour, also serves as a strategic practice for negotiating and challenging masculine hegemonic ideals. It concludes that the willingness to stigmatise and victimise themselves as disempowered individuals becomes a turning point, which, paradoxically, empowers sex consumers as actors in the framework of consumer capitalism.
