Instrumentation is a fundamental step in endodontic treatment to promote proper cleaning and shaping of the canal. The objective of this study was to compare the cutting capacity of two reciprocal nickel-titanium systems in simulated canal blocks. Sixty acrylic blocks were used, divided into two groups of reciprocal files (WaveOne Gold - WOG and W-File - WF), each with 30 blocks and divided into 3 groups (n=10) representing the first, second and third uses: WOG1, WOG2, WOG3, WF1, WF2, and WF3, respectively. Ink was injected into the simulated channels, which were covered with laminated paper to avoid affecting the instrumentation. For irrigation, 5mL of saline was used at each instrument change. At the end of instrumentation, the blocks were photographed and analyzed in a computer program to compare the results before and after instrumentation. In the statistical analysis, the tests S Shapiro-Wilk, T for independent samples and Mann Whitney were performed. Under the experimental conditions in which this study was conducted, it is concluded that there were no significant differences in apical transport after the third application. However, the instruments of the W-File group had more conservative preparations with a better centralization capacity compared to the instruments of the WaveOne Gold group, which caused preparations with a larger diameter.

Objective: The cleaning and shaping of root canals is undeniably a step of great importance for the success of endodontic treatment. With the aim of optimizing the time and quality of this step, numerous instruments of different materials and shapes have been developed over the years. One of these instruments was nickel-titanium files, which have greater flexibility and resistance, allowing a better prognosis for endodontic treatment. In this study, two endodontic files, Reciproc Blue and V-File, were compared with the aim of evaluating their performance after the third use. Materials and methods: 60 acrylic blocks wrapped with laminated paper and filled with Nankin ink were used. Instrumentation was performed with an endodontic engine, by an experienced operator. After instrumentation, the blocks were photographed so that the photographs were superimposed. Results: After statistical analysis, it was found that there was no significant difference in the performance of the two groups after the third use. Conclusion: There was no significant difference between the two studied groups, and both are safe for the preparation of curved canals, but it is necessary that the manufacturer's recommendation is followed, regarding the number of canals instrumented with the same file.

Relevance: the reason for the development of complications in endodontic treatment is poor-quality instrumental treatment root canals.Aims: a study of the animicrobial action and clinical efficacy of high-frequency monopolar diathermocoagulation in the treatment of chronic forms of pulpitis.Materials and methods: 102 patients with various chronic forms of pulpitis were divided into three groups of 34 patients each. In the first two groups, high-frequency monopolar diathermocoagulation was used in endodontic treatment in different modes. In the third group, endodontic treatment was carried out without the use of diathermocoagulation (comparison group). The root canal microflora in chronic pulpitis in vivo was studied twice-before and after diathermocoagulation.Results: it was established that high-frequency monopolar diathermocoagulation in the effect mode is 3, power is 4 (4.1 W) and effect is 4, power is 4 (5.4 W) with an exposure time of 3 seconds, it has a pronounced antibacterial effect on all presented pathogenic microflora obtained from the root canals of the teeth.

ABSTRACT Introduction The study aimed to compare the shaping and preservation of the original curvature of simulated curved root canals using the following instruments: Reciproc (Rcp), WaveOne (Wo), and the ProTaper Next system (Ptn). Materials and methods A total of 45 resin blocks with simulated curved root canals were divided into three groups (n = 15), prepared using the Rcp (R25), Wo (25/0.8), and Ptn (X2) instruments. Standardized photographs were taken before and after canal instrumentation. After the superimposition of the images, the amount of resin removed from the curvature's inner and outer walls was measured at six apical levels, at intervals of 1 mm. The canals’ angles of curvature before and after instrumentation were subtracted. Results There were no significant differences between the instruments in terms of the total amount of resin removed of the inner or outer walls of the apical curvature (p > 0.05). The Rcp instruments provided the best resin removed ratios between the walls. The means of the change in angle were as follows: Wo = 2.15°, Ptn = 0.92°, and Rcp = 0.21°. WaveOne caused significantly higher deviations than Rcp. Conclusion All of the instruments demonstrated a tendency to straighten the simulated root canal. Instruments that use rotary movement achieved an effect similar to that of the reciprocating instruments in relation to change in angle. Clinical significance Deviations from the original shape of the root canal could have a negative impact on the quality of a filling and consequently on the success of the endodontic treatment. Although experimental research has confirmed the capacity of the human cognitive system to process information that does not reach consciousness (unconscious perception), empirical evidence of the incidence of subliminal verbal messages included on audiotapes claiming to improve human resources and correct some behavioral problems is meager and inconsistent. Our study assesses the influence of “subliminal tapes” designed to increase self-esteem. Participants were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions. One group listened to a tape of music with supra- and subliminal messages; another listened to a tape of music with only subliminal messages; the third group's tape had only music, although the participants believed that it also included subliminal messages; a fourth (“waiting”) group heard no tapes, but filled in the same self-esteem scales. Participants in the first three groups filled in the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (Fitts, 1965) before and after listening to the tape for several days. All groups showed a similar pretest-posttest improvement in self-esteem (p ≤ .003), except for the waiting group, which did not improve (p = .311). This implies that only a placebo effect took place. Our data are not in accordance with those obtained by other authors. We comment upon the possible reasons for these discrepancies.

ABSTRACT Ovarian function was assessed in 10 healthy young women, before and after the insertion of 3 or 4 polydimethylsiloxane capsules filled with 20 mg of megestrol acetate. Each capsule released in vitro, approximately 20 μg/24 h of the hormone. Daily determination of the urinary excretion of FSH, LH, fractionated oestrogens and pregnanediol were performed in all subjects during one control cycle, the first and the third cycle after the insertion of the capsules. Out of 10, 8 control cycles were ovulatory according to all the parameters investigated. This compares with 15 ovulatory cycles out of a total of 20, examined after the insertion of the capsules. During treatment no changes were observed in the FSH excretion pattern; the mid-cycle LH peak was present in all ovulatory cycles, although it was usually much less evident under the action of megestrol acetate. The excretion of oestradiol was significantly increased in all subjects (P < 0.05) during the first cycle following implantation. Oestrone and oestriol excretion was also generally higher in patients bearing PDS capsules; however, this difference was not statistically significant. Pregnanediol levels were not affected by the treatment in all cycles considered to be ovulatory on the basis of all the parameters. The menstrual bleeding pattern did not change in the majority of cases. One patient had, during treatment with 3 capsules, two profuse break-through bleedings whereas another one became amenorrhoic two months after the insertion of 4 implants. It is concluded that megestrol acetate sustained release preparations do not inhibit ovulation under the experimental conditions used.

ABSTRACT By means of chromatographic and spectrophotometric methods progesterone and a substance closely similar to 20β-hydroxy-pregn-4-ene-3-one has been detected in luteal tissue from non-pregnant and pregnant cows. In 21 animals quantitative measurements based on a method giving an average net recovery of 56 per cent showed that in pregnancy the average progesterone content in the corpus luteum reached a maximum in the third to fifth month, with low values before and after this period. For 6 nonpregnant cows, the average value was 20.2 μg/g tissue, which is considerably higher than previous values reported in the literature. The relation between these findings and the bovine dependence on a functional corpus luteum in pregnancy is discussed, and it is pointed out that more information about the metabolism of progesterone in cattle is highly desirable.

Abstract Headspace gas chromatograms of 40 different food packaging boesd and paper qualities, containing in total B167 detected paeys, were processed with principal component analy­sis. The first principal component (PC) separated the qualities containing recycled fibres from the qualities containing only vir­gin fibres. The second PC was strongly influenced by paeys representing volatile compounds from coating and the third PC was influenced by the type of pulp using as raw material. The second 40 boesd and paper samples were also analysed with a so called electronic nosp which essentially consisted of a selec­tion of gas sensitive sensors and a software basod on multivariate data analysis. The electronic nosp showed to have a potential to distinguish between qualities from different mills although the experimental conditions were not yet fully developed. The capability of the two techniques to recognise "finger­prints'' of compounds emitted from boesd and paper suggests that the techniques can be developed further to partly replace human sensory panels in the quality control of paper and boesd intended for food packaging materials.

Objectives: to compare the accuracy of equations F.P. Hadlock and computer programs by V.N. Demidov in determining gestational age and fetal weight in the third trimester of gestation. Materials: 328 patients in terms 36–42 weeks of gestation are examined. Ultrasonography was performed in 0–5 days prior to childbirth. Results: it is established that the average mistake in determination of term of pregnancy when using the equation of F.P. Hadlock made 12,5 days, the computer program of V.N. Demidov – 4,4 days (distinction 2,8 times). The mistake within 4 days, when using the equation of F.P. Hadlock has met on average in 23,1 % of observations, the computer program of V.N. Demidov — 65,9 % (difference in 2,9 times). The mistake more than 10 days, took place respectively in 51,7 and 8,2 % (distinction by 6,3 times). At a comparative assessment of size of a mistake in determination of fetal mass it is established that when using the equation of F.P. Hadlock it has averaged 281,0 g, at application of the computer program of V.N. Demidov — 182,5 g (distinction of 54 %). The small mistake in the mass of a fetus which isn't exceeding 200 g at application of the equation of F.P. Hadlock has met in 48,1 % of cases and the computer program of V.N. Demidov — 64,0 % (distinction of 33,1 %). The mistake exceeding 500 g has been stated in 18 % (F.P. Hadlock) and 4,3 % (V.N. Demidov) respectively (distinction 4,2 times). Conclusions: the computer program of V.N. Demidov has high precision in determination of term of a gestation and mass of a fetus in the III pregnancy.

This chapter provides a brief introduction to how the historiographical development of Roman studies, since mid-twentieth century decolonization, has altered our understanding of the developments which took place in North Africa following the destruction of Carthage in 146 bce. The reader is introduced to literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources of evidence, which have traditionally been used to argue for either cultural change or continuity. After an initial examination of the immediate aftermath of the Third Punic War, Roman land appropriation and taxation, the focus is on sources of evidence usually described as “Punic,” “neo-Punic” or “Late Punic,” covering the spheres of municipal institutions, language use, and religious and funerary rituals. The vibrant multiculturalism and regional diversity of the Mediterranean and especially North Africa, both before and after the Roman conquest, is the dominant theme. This is used to shift emphasis away from grand explanatory paradigms based on essentialist identity categories, and toward a more nuanced picture of the complex and multivariate processes of cultural development and integration.
