Risk is not a neutral term even in (western) contexts of art and design pedagogic practice, where risk-taking is entwined into the matrices of the academy from the macro to the micro: from institution to studio to tutor to student. Neither design education nor practice exist in a vacuum, so the conditions and contingencies of risk in contemporary design pedagogy are unpicked, in relation to place, process and people, as inter-connected (though often fragmented) components of study. Art school is examined as a transformative locus for risk: a conceptual-architectural site for knowledge but also a temporal space of subversion, within which the studio provides students with a relatively safe setting for risk in individual and collective formulations. Neo-liberal policies of standardization and competition are as embedded in educational institutions as they are across all levels of society: the resultant loss of agency is felt individually and collectively. This article reframes risk as fundamentally located and dialogic, an autonomous cooperative and collective action, underpinned by critical thinking and disobedient pedagogies. This is a transformative educational process anticipating change in an expanded mode of design in which the student members of the Alternative Art School are considered as critical agents, employing creative reflexivity as an antidote to the neo-liberal stifling of risk.

The organisation of the university educational process requires a high availability of educational and scientific literature, which implies the high quality of the preparation of educational and teaching aids, reference materials and scientific publications. However, one can note a change in the technologies of premedia and printing processes, optimisation of the activity of publishing offices and, as a result, a drop in the quality of published printed matter. In 2019 a quantitative analysis of preparation of conference materials for publication was conducted on the basis of the Ural University Publishing House. According to this analysis, one can argue that the quality of the publishing product depends on the ratio of prepress volumes and timelines, the quality of materials provided to the publishing house, the responsibility of the authors and members of the editorial board, their readiness to work within a short time period, etc. According to the documents, the editorial board ensures the quality of scientific publications, which in this case consists of four Grand PhDs and two PhDs; in fact, the quality of the content left much to be desired. Separately, the quality of preparation of the bibliographic apparatus should be noted. In this case, the editorial preparation of the bibliography was carried out by a library employee in an extremely limited time (two days). It was done in order to bring the bibliographic description to some uniformity—there was no discussion on compliance with All-Union State Standards 7.1.-2003 and 7.05-2008. There was also a shift of areas of responsibility when the preparation of separate elements of a scientific article (for example, the bibliographic description) is not planned in advance, but becomes spontaneous and, as a result, entails a partial reimposition of the manuscript. The priorities of the practical model of preparing a university publication have changed significantly. The publication of conference proceedings prioritises releasing the publication at a certain time (by the beginning of a scientific event), which jeopardises the quality of its prepress. When preparing a university publication in tight deadlines, functions are redistributed, and professional communication has its features: both the authors and the publishers do not have the necessary conditions for an effective interaction in order to prepare a high-quality scientific publication. Most definitions of a scientific and educational book emphasise its task, properties, functions, role as a means of communication of the professional community and a method of transmitting relevant information. It seems that a university publication, like no other, should prioritise the quality of prepress and, therefore, should be planned ahead.

Abortion law is one of the main factors influencing the number of abortions performed in a country. The study aimed to assess the influence of abortion law on the number of performed terminations with particular attention paid to pregnancy terminations due to fetal defects. The retrospective comparative analysis of statistical data included on the governmental websites of Poland and the UK was performed. The average of 190,733.1 terminations were performed in the United Kingdom in the years 2009–2018 with the average of 2820.9 due to fetal defects. At the same time the average of 858.6 terminations were performed in Poland with 820.7 due to fetal defects. Population size is the only significant predictor of the number of terminations in the United Kingdom. The increase in the number of deliveries and population in Poland was not linked to the increase in the overall number of terminations or terminations due to fetal defects. It might be due to the unavailability of pregnancy terminations in many places. The radicalization of abortion law exerts no influence on the decrease in the number of terminations due to fetal indications. The liberalization of abortion law promotes the increase in the number of terminations due to social indications.
