The book concludes by summarizing key implications for ecological attunement in the context of ecological crisis. Though such implications remain resolutely pluralistic, one imperative is challenging the dominance of received norms and cultivating attention to quality and affect prior to their consolidation in such norms. A tactic for this is through cultivating attention to centre-periphery relations and corresponding background-foreground shifts. Finally, Deleuze’s repurposing of Bergson’s concept of fabulation is discussed in the context of resisting hegemonic norms in an affirmative rather than reactionary manner. This notion of fabulation is connected to Whitehead’s discussion of “propositions” and “lures for feeling”. Such affirmative fabulation seeks to create connections across differences rather than consolidate us versus them narratives. This involves an openness to the unexpected and unpredictable rather than the dogma of propagandas or ideological identity.

In this paper we conduct an analysis of the critical narratives of Stardew Valley and compare them to other relevant videogames in order to develop new possibilities for an ecological critique of capitalist extractive econo­mies. Critical narratives of this game are aimed primarily at the alienating conditions of labour and deeply devastating modes of production under capitalism that impact and severely damage the environment. Analysing these narratives, we superimpose the immediate messages of the game with the procedural rhetoric and material conditions of their existence. Over the course of our analysis, we highlight a material-narrative disso­nance which, in the case of Stardew Valley, fails to function as a commu­nicative strategy of the game and remains its mere external contradiction. Although the game’s critical narrative may seem overly utopian and its political imaginary a bit underdeveloped, the game elaborates on concrete ways to tackle the alienation of labour and resolve the ecological crisis. In addition to this, the paper covers the history of the interplay between the video game industry and the field of global ecological crisis research. We compare the attempts to raise awareness of the videogames’ own material­ity that preceded Stardew Valley. We conclude that Stardew Valley utilises the language of sustainable co-existence and wasteless local production, expanding this logic both to the sphere of labour and the spectrum of en­vironmental problems. In the case of ecological critique, some gameplay decisions in Stardew Valley enable us to come up with new strategies aimed at creating critical narratives about the environment in videogames. Thus supplementing Stardew Valley’s findings with critical tropes derived from other games (mainly, Rain World), we were able to gather a set of theoretical instruments that could facilitate the creation of games about ecosystems. Following Donna Haraway’s emphasis on the crucial role of narrative fram­ing (“it matters which stories tell stories”), we highlight new opportunities for the entire medium of videogames.

The basis of the advancement of contemporary society comprises the development of science and technology, intensified by the globalization processes. The tendency to progress further and produce more in order to improve the living conditions of people has also led to certain adverse consequences reflected in the ecological crisis, that is, the disturbance of the ecological balance. In an effort to come up with a solution, the model of sustainable development was created on the basis of harmonizing the economic needs with the preservation of the ecological balance both at the global and the local level. A healthy and high-quality living environment is not only the basic condition for economic wealth, but clean air, healthy water and healthy soil and food also present the fundamental preconditions for the good health of people. The concept of sustainable development is a relatively new notion, particularly in Serbia. However, it has neither been developed nor implemented sufficiently in our country. The reasons behind this are numerous, among which the unfavourable economic situation certainly occupies an important position, along with the fact that the concept of sustainable development still does not represent a widely accepted development paradigm in Serbia. For Serbia, as a developing country, it is of particular importance to preserve its ecological balance and ensure sustainable development, which is possible, among other things, by cooperating internationally in the sphere of environmental protection.

AbstractIn this article, we want to examine how the method of correlation of Paul Tillich is implemented in the present-day concept of ecospirituality as worked by Michel-Maxime Egger. According to us, more than an attitude, Egger’s ecospirituality can be understood as a real method, in theology, to “answer" the question of the ecological crisis, by avoiding partial and dualist answers and to come to a spiritual theology of nature.

SummaryRecently, there has been a proliferation of international agreements imposing minimum standards on states in respect of their treatment of foreign investors and allowing investors to initiate dispute settlement proceedings where a state violates these standards. Of greatest significance to Canada is Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which provides both standards for state behaviour and the right to initiate binding arbitration. Since 1996, four cases have been brought under Chapter 11. This note describes the Chapter 11 process and suggests some of the issues that may arise as it is increasingly resorted to by investors.

The intestinal roundworm of swine is pinkish in color and about the diameter of a lead pencil. Adult worms, taken from parasitized swine, frequently were observed with macroscopic lesions on their cuticule. Those possessing such lesions were rinsed in distilled water, and cylindrical segments of the affected areas were removed. Some of the segments were fixed in buffered formalin before freeze-drying; others were freeze-dried immediately. Initially, specimens were quenched in liquid freon followed by immersion in liquid nitrogen. They were then placed in ampuoles in a freezer at −45C and sublimated by vacuum until dry. After the specimens appeared dry, the freezer was allowed to come to room temperature slowly while the vacuum was maintained. The dried specimens were attached to metal pegs with conductive silver paint and placed in a vacuum evaporator on a rotating tilting stage. They were then coated by evaporating an alloy of 20% palladium and 80% gold to a thickness of approximately 300 A°. The specimens were examined by secondary electron emmission in a scanning electron microscope.

The fully processed low-carbon electrical steels are generally fabricated through vacuum degassing to reduce the carbon level and to avoid the need for any further decarburization annealing treatment. This investigation was conducted on eighteen heats of such steels with aluminum content ranging from 0.001% to 0.011% which was believed to come from the addition of ferroalloys.The sizes of all the observed grains are less than 24 μm, and gradually decrease as the content of aluminum is increased from 0.001% to 0.007%. For steels with residual aluminum greater than 0. 007%, the average grain size becomes constant and is about 8.8 μm as shown in Fig. 1. When the aluminum is increased, the observed grains are changed from the uniformly coarse and equiaxial shape to the fine size in the region near surfaces and the elongated shape in the central region. SEM and EDAX analysis of large spherical inclusions in the matrix indicate that silicate is the majority compound when the aluminum propotion is less than 0.003%, then the content of aluminum in compound inclusion increases with that in steel.

Summary: In the past suicidal behavior among Black South Africans has been largely underresearched. Earlier studies among the other main ethnic groups in the country showed suicidal behavior in those groups to be a serious problem. This article briefly reviews some of the more recent research on suicidal behavior in Black South Africans. The results indicate an apparent increase in suicidal behavior in this group. Several explanations are offered for the change in suicidal behavior in the reported clinical populations. This includes past difficulties for all South Africans to access health care facilities in the Apartheid (legal racial separation) era, and present difficulties of post-Apartheid transformation the South African society is undergoing, as the people struggle to come to terms with the deleterious effects of the former South African racial policies, related socio-cultural, socio-economic, and other pressures.
