This study aims to investigate EFL students’ difficulties in writing a research proposal by using Swales’ Create-A-Research-Space (cars) model and try to find out the students’ problems. This study was used as a qualitative research design. The subject of this study are twenty students and the instrument are students writing the research proposal, interview for the students and lecturer. The result of this research is the students’ problem in writing for their introduction for move 1 (75%) and for move 2 (55%), there are 4 (four) students having problems how to face the criteria for inclusion and exclusion from review was not justified and the literature review was not topic focused. Related to methodology, the choice of paradigm, methodology, data collection, and data analysis was not justified to answer the research questions (20%). Next, a detailed description of the research procedures, as well as an explanation of the reason for doing so, was not provided (15%). Continued to the detailed description of procedures and materials was not provided to allow for replication (15%). Moreover, a component of methodologies such as the research design, research site, and participants, data collection techniques, and data analysis is not included (15%). The last, for the references, were all student writing research proposals less to completed the way how to write a reference, such as uncompleted detailed related to sources. The biggest problem related to the students' ability to write a research proposal for the introduction. Some students face some difficulties in how to compose the background well, including introducing and reviewing items of previous research in the area, how to find a gap in the previous research and student's fewer references to quote.

This study was conducted by descriptive quantitative, with a content analysis the article that has been published in scientific journals that indexed in the Indonesia publication index. The content analysis were refer to sevent subjects were biology topics, teaching and learning, research design/methods, research element, data collection tools, samples and sample sizes and technique of the data analysis. The data obtained were analyzed with descriptive statistics and displayed in tables and graphs. We founded that only four journals have been scope specifically in the biology learning. All of these articles were downloaded and all of theses articles were subjected to content analysis. The result of the study showed that research trends BER in Indonesia across the year 2012-2017 were devide on seven categorizes such as; biology topics was animal form and function, teaching and learning was subject matter, research design/methods was quantitative experimental design, research element was cognitive, data collection tools was achievement test, samples was the students at Senior High School (SMA) and the size of samples was between 31-100 and technique of the data analysis was quantitative method. The implication of this study has implicated that to be an information for the researcher being conduct their researchs. Qualitative research in the health sciences has had to overcome many prejudices and a number of misunderstandings, but today qualitative research is as acceptable as quantitative research designs and is widely funded and published. Writing the proposal of a qualitative study, however, can be a challenging feat, due to the emergent nature of the qualitative research design and the description of the methodology as a process. Even today, many sub-standard proposals at post-graduate evaluation committees and application proposals to be considered for funding are still seen. This problem has led the researcher to develop a framework to guide the qualitative researcher in writing the proposal of a qualitative study based on the following research questions: (i) What is the process of writing a qualitative research proposal? and (ii) What does the structure and layout of a qualitative proposal look like? The purpose of this article is to discuss the process of writing the qualitative research proposal, as well as describe the structure and layout of a qualitative research proposal. The process of writing a qualitative research proposal is discussed with regards to the most important questions that need to be answered in your research proposal with consideration of the guidelines of being practical, being persuasive, making broader links, aiming for crystal clarity and planning before you write. While the structure of the qualitative research proposal is discussed with regards to the key sections of the proposal, namely the cover page, abstract, introduction, review of the literature, research problem and research questions, research purpose and objectives, research paradigm, research design, research method, ethical considerations, dissemination plan, budget and appendices.

The article is written as a travelogue by the author while exploring the passage of qualitative research in her maiden independent research work—her dissertation. The author describes in the article how her journey of qualitative research took shape right from the take-off point: the choice of topic and methodology to the data collection, analysis and presentation of the findings. The article also throws light on the various experiences of the researcher during the journey including the issues and challenges faced by her in different stages of the study like the research proposal stage, data collection stage and the data analysis stage. The objective of the article is to familiarize the qualitative researchers, who are currently at the beginner stage, with the possible issues and pitfalls of qualitative research process. For that the author has used her own experiences to explain the nuances of the process. In the article, the author also highlights that irrespective of the challenges faced in the process how the research study helped her in developing herself as a better researcher and a wiser person, making her efforts fruitful and providing her a sense of achievement.
