This study examines the impacts of COVID-19 on small businesses in the Northern region of Iraq. The survey sample included 235 persons in Erbil governorate. According to the results, small businesses in all sectors in the region have been affected negatively by COVID-19. The COVID-19 has had negative effects on 74% of participants’ business; this means that most of them have suffered huge losses, to the extent that some of them have suffered huge losses more than the profit of the several months before COVID-19. Based on the survey result, sales on debt have increased so much that the average of these sales in debt is 86.4%. The majority of participants pointed out that during the outbreak of coronavirus, most people paid more attention to the price of the product than to the quality

The article examines the competencies of entrepreneurs that are necessary in modern conditions for young people to ensure their successful career, analyzes the areas in which business initiatives of young people are most often used. The competencies necessary for graduates, specific areas of employment in modern conditions of digital transformation are analyzed. Special emphasis is placed on the dynamics of changes in key competencies that are important for business success in modern conditions of economic development. The results of an operational survey of managers are presented, which make it possible to identify new requirements and new qualities: digital development management, data management and use, application of digital technologies, "adoption and implementation of employee initiatives". The groups of transformations that have occurred due to the introduction of digital technologies in small businesses are highlighted. The aim of the work is to highlight those of them that have received the greatest development in the context of digitalization, and to establish the impact on them of the COVID-19 pandemic. To conduct the study, the methods of systemic, comparative and morphological analysis and synthesis of the general set of factors that determine changes in the business competencies of youth were used. The basic elements of the article can be offered as practical recommendations to state and municipal authorities on the development of youth entrepreneurship in the North Caucasus Federal District and the improvement of youth policy in the regions. The formed problems in the studied area can become the basis for the formation of a system of stimulating youth business. The study showed that in a crisis it is not individual qualities that are important, but their totality, with complementary characteristics.

Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) services aim to rapidly initiate specialist packages of care for those people newly experiencing symptoms. The intention of such rapid engagement is to mitigate the negative effects of a prolonged duration of untreated psychosis. Aiming to achieve a ‘parity of esteem’ between mental and physical health, a new target was introduced by the National Health Service (NHS) England, where 50% of new referrals were expected to receive a concordant package of care within 2 weeks from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. A baseline assessment in late 2014 found that just 21% of all referrals received and accepted met this target within the EIP Team for the North-East London NHS Foundation Trust. This project sought to improve the team’s performance, seeking input from all team members and using an iterative process with the primary aim of meeting the target ahead of its roll-out. It was determined that the relatively high number of inappropriate referrals (34% at baseline) is a key causative agent in delaying staff from processing eligible cases in a timely fashion. These are defined as referrals which do not meet basic eligibility criteria such as no previous treatment for psychosis. Interventions were therefore designed targeting three domains of improving staff awareness of the new target, improving efficiency by changing the case allocation process and improving the referral pathway for external sources. The impact of these changes was re-evaluated over two cycles beyond baseline. By the final cycle, 62% of new referrals were seen within 2 weeks, while inappropriate referrals declined to just 3%. The multi-interventional nature of this project limits its generalisability and further work should be carried out to identify those changes that were most impactful. Nevertheless, focused targeting of the referral pathway may prove to be of benefit to other EIP services struggling with lengthy wait times.

Abstract: One of the consequences of the corona virus pandemic is a major shock to the economies worldwide. The impact on various sectors and companies depends on several factors, including the possibility of adapting jobs, i.e., the way of performing work tasks in the context of epidemiological measures. Organizations face the need for a new strategic approach in work organization, in workplace health protection, with communication under new circumstances, as well as in leadership, motivation, and revenue and cost management. In New York, for example, only 14% of more than a million employees returned to their offices by mid-January, threatening many small businesses (shops, restaurants) but also the living in Manhattan. During the spring lockdown, 62% of employed Americans worked from home which is more than twice as many as a few years earlier. Many of them expressed satisfaction with the quick adjustment and efficiency, but recent research shows that working from home also has negative effects, such as those related to direct communication, knowledge sharing, creative problem solving, but also the separation of private and business life. This paper analyses the elements of workplace quality, ways of adapting and organizing the work of different activities in pandemic conditions, and advantages and disadvantages of teleworking in search of an answer to the question of whether the future is in hybrid workplaces.

Background  How has the Government of Canada framed the issue of climate change in Canada’s northern region during the last decade?Analysis  This article undertakes a discourse analysis of Canadian government speeches, statements, and reports relating to northern climate change since 2006. It argues that the rhetoric of the 2006–2015 Conservative government de-emphasized the impact of Arctic climate change on the people of the North. It stressed the threat to environmental security and nature. Conclusions and implications  This article contributes to literature that understands how governments frame issues, as well as literature that examines the framing of climate change and reviews of Canada’s northern policy.

AbstractMigration has manifested itself to historic highs, creating divisive views among politicians, policy makers, and individuals. The present paper studies the Europeans’ attitudes toward immigration, focusing particularly on the role of social capital. Based on 267,282 respondents from 22 countries and over the period 2002–2014, we find that despite the eventful past years, Europeans, on average, are positive toward immigrants with the North European countries to be the least xenophobic. A salient finding of our analysis is that regardless of the impact of other contextual factors, namely, a country’s macroeconomic conditions, ethnic diversity, cultural origin, and individuals’ attributes, social capital associates with positive attitudes toward all immigrants, independent of their background. Furthermore, social capital moderates the negative effects of perceived threat on people’s opinions about immigrants.

Due to the spread of undiff erentiated forms of connective tissue dysplasia, it seems relevant to assess the impact of organogenesis disorders on the physical development of schoolchildren living in the northern region. What dictates the need to study the interrelationships and interdependencies of the components of physical development and somatometric indicators in children of the north with phenotypic markers of UCTD. The eff ect of posture disorders on the studied components of physical development is manifested by higher growth in children with a fl at and round-concave back, a decrease in the thickness of skin-fat folds and the size of the head with a round and round-concave back. Therefore, to analyze the intersex and age diff erences in physical development in children with NDT, it is necessary to take into account the dynamics of interdependent anthropometric indicators and indices, taking into account the types of posture disorders.

This paper describes a study conducted to evaluate the impact of the absence vs. the presence of the North Avenue Damin Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on water quality in the Milwaukee River in terms of conventional constituents, such as DO, chlorophyll a, BOD, and nutrients (N and P). Phytoplanktonic primary production had been recognized earlier as a link between mostly nonpoint nutrient loads to the Milwaukee River and degradation of water quality in the River. A mathematical model of a relevant section of the River was used in the study to estimate the effect of the removal of the Dam on this primary production link. The authors established the model using WASP, which is USEPA's widely used modelling package. The modelled extent of the River included both shallow, productive upstream reaches as well as impounded downstream sections. In the impounded reach of the River where the Dam is located, the simulated removal of the Dam (1) replaced net phytoplankton decay with net phytoplankton growth because of improved light conditions and limited settling; (2) substantially increased the concentration of DO because of the increased photosynthetic production and reduced benthic consumption; and (3) somewhat increased bottle BOD5 because of the elevated phytoplankton levels. The simulated removal of the Dam eliminated the negative effects of eutrophication at the site while possibly shifting the potential for these effects further downstream towards Lake Michigan.

Economic, political, and technological uncertainties require organizations to prepare adequately for new events that occur each day. Economic crisis, changes in the policies of each country and technological developments are classic examples of these changes in organizations. Seasonality is one of the economic phenomena that occur, and different forms of management are required. The seasonality that is described as a systematic and temporal imbalance of the tourist phenomenon that does not need to be regular, caused by the climate or by the vacation periods, and is based on the consumer behavior that can be expressed in terms of the number of visitors, traffic, highways, jobs, and tickets at attractions. Therefore, through a careful analysis of seasonality, it is possible that the losses are predicted, and the negative impact is not so grotesque on the company. For this, it is good that the manager uses the cost assessment methods to assume the seasonality of sales and thus be able to guard against the negative effects of the same. The objective of this research is to understand how owners of micro and small businesses in coastal cities consider themselves entrepreneurs or not and how they deal with obstacles such as seasonality through cost management. The methodology used was based on an exploratory and bibliographic research with a qualitative approach, seeking to analyze the triad: Entrepreneurship, Seasonality and Cost Management. The field research was applied through a semi-structured questionnaire to the sample of 100 Microentrepreneurs in the trade of goods and services in Caraguatatuba and São Sebastião, central cities of the North Coast of São Paulo. The main results show that most of the interviewed entrepreneurs perceive a certain impact caused by seasonality, understand the use of Cost Management to improve their processes and are adapted to one of the main costing methods highlighted by the bibliography.

Despite of the popularity of interactive movie trailers, rigorous research on one of the most apparent features of these interfaces – the level of user control – has been scarce. This study explored the effects of user control on users’ immersion and enjoyment of the movie trailers, moderated by the content type. We conducted a 2 (high user control versus low user control) × 2 (drama film trailer versus documentary film trailer) mixed-design factorial experiment. The results showed that the level of user control over movie trailer interfaces decreased users’ immersion when the trailer had an element of traditional story structure, such as a drama film trailer. Participants in the high user control condition answered that they were less fascinated with, absorbed in, focused on, mentally involved with, and emotionally affected by the movie trailer than participants in the low user control condition only with the drama movie trailer. The negative effects of user control on the level of immersion for the drama trailer translated into users’ enjoyment. The impact of user control over interfaces on immersion and enjoyment varies depending on the nature of the media content, which suggests a possible trade-off between the level of user control and entertainment outcomes.

The paper examines the impact of oil price shocks on inflation, as well as the impact of the choice of the monetary policy regime on the strength of this influence. We used dynamic models on panel data for the countries of the world for the period from 2000 to 2017. It is shown that mainly the impact of changes in oil prices on inflation is carried out through the channel of exchange rate. The paper demonstrates the influence of the transition to inflation targeting on the nature of the relationship between oil price shocks and inflation. This effect is asymmetrical: during periods of rising oil prices, inflation targeting reduces the effect of the transfer of oil prices, limiting negative effects of shock. During periods of decline in oil prices, this monetary policy regime, in contrast, contributes to a stronger transfer, helping to reduce inflation.
