Inflammation has been proven to be one of the key factors in the pathogenesis of moyamoya disease (MMD). Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are cheap and reliable biomarkers of inflammation. Nevertheless, evidence regarding the relationship among PLR and NLR in patients with MMD is limited. The focus of this subject was to explore the relationship between PLR and NLR in patients with newly diagnosed MMD.Patients and methods: A cross-sectional study was performed including 261 patients with diagnosed MMD for the first time who were enrolled from our hospital, from 24 March 2013 to 24 December 2018. The clinical characteristics were collected for each patient. Univariate analysis, smooth curve fitting and multivariate piecewise linear regression were showed. Results: The mean levels or median values (interquartile range) of PLR and NLR were 146.979 ± 51.203 and 2.241 (1.589–2.984), respectively. A significant positive correlation between PLR and NLR levels (P < 0.001) was showed by the univariate analysis. Furthermore, a non-linear relationship was detected between PLR and NLR by smooth curve fitting after adjusting for potential confounders. A multivariate piecewise linear regression model revealed a significant positive correlation between PLR and NLR when the PLR level was lower than 219.82 (β 0.012, 95% CI 0.005, 0.019; P = 0.001). PLR was also significantly positively associated with NLR when PLR concentrations were >219.82 (β 0.098, 95% CI 0.069, 0.128; P < 0.001).Conclusion: There seemed to be a positive association between PLR and NLR in patients with MMD. This may help to further explain the role of inflammation in the occurrence and progress of MMD.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic allergic disease with multifactorial causation. Although its association with diet has been demonstrated, it remains unclear whether the prevalence of atopic dermatitis among adults is associated with nutrition label awareness. Nutrition label awareness indicates knowledge of the existence of nutrition labels on processed food, and the use of them for food selection. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed the relationship between nutrition label awareness and the prevalence of atopic dermatitis among men and women using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VI (2013–2015), including a nationally representative sample of 13,505 Korean adults (aged > 19 years). The relationship between the prevalence of atopic dermatitis and nutrition label awareness was evaluated using t-tests, χ2 tests and multivariate adjusted logistic regression analysis. Although univariate analysis showed that atopic dermatitis was associated with nutrition label awareness in both men and women, after adjustment for covariates, there was no significant association among men. The significant association between the prevalence of atopic dermatitis and nutrition label awareness among women reveals a sex-based difference in this relationship in adults, and atopic dermatitis may be managed and prevented among women by targeted education regarding nutrition labels and diet.

Abstract BackgroundThe factors that expose the severity of dengue are still controversial, particularly the relationship between severe dengue and secondary dengue. More importantly, the severity of dengue infection remains poorly studied in Africa. The objective of this study was to compare severity signs between patients with primary and secondary dengue infection during the 2016 dengue outbreak in Burkina Faso.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study through a retrospective examination of patient medical records managed in Ouagadougou for dengue fever from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017. All health facilities with the capacity to perform dengue diagnosis in Ouagadougou were considered in the survey. Primary dengue was defined as the presence of AgNS1 and/or IgM and secondary dengue as the presence of IgG associated with one of these two markers. Patients with only IgG were excluded. Univariate and multivariable analyzes were performed using a logistic regression with dengue infection (primary or secondary dengue) as the binary dependent variable. The statistical significant level was set at 0.05.Results Of the 811 patients managed for dengue fever during the study period, 418 (51.5%) were male. Thirty-five patients (4.3%) had primary dengue infection (AgNS1 + and / or IgM + with negative IgG) and seven hundred seventy-six (776) patients (95.7%) had secondary dengue infection. 245 patients (30.2%) experienced severe signs. Renal failure (13.1%) was the main sign of severity, followed by severe bleeding (10.6%). In univariate analysis, severe bleeding were associated with primary dengue infection (OR = 2.65, 95%IC: 1.16 -6.03, p = 0.01). Twenty-four deaths (9.8%) were reported during the period. ConclusionSigns of gravity can occur during primary dengue fever. This study highlight the need to conduct more studies on the severity factors of dengue fever.

Background: The relationship between neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with outcome is a complex issue. A high NLR reflects systemic inflammation. This study aimed to estimate the relationship between NLR, and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in disease-free survival (DFS). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in which we reviewed the patient files of 102 patients with breast cancer treated at the Babylon Oncology Center from January 2009 to September 2014, who had follow-up for at least 36 months. The following data were collected from patient files: age, diagnosis date, date of recurrence and/or metastasis, follow-up, histological tumor type, tumor size, node metastasis stage, histological differentiation degree, estrogen and/or progesterone receptor expression, HER2 neu status, and metastasis site. Results: The mean age of patients was 50.4 ± 11.7 years and lowest period of follow up was 40 months. Longest DFS was 62 months, with 5 years DFS in 52.5% of patients. Stage N0 was associated with a significantly higher DFS compared to stage N1. Isolated local recurrence was seen in 15% of patients and combined local recurrences with distant metastasis was observed 37%. NLR had the highest discrimination ability to predict recurrence and distant metastasis. Conclusion: An increase in NLR was associated with poor DFS, and it can therefore be a predictive and prognostic factor. NLR’s established prediction model warrants further investigation.

Exclusive breastfeeding is defined as feeding infants only breast milk, be it directly from the breast up to the first six months, without any additional food and drinks; such as formula milk, honey, water, juice, and baby porridge. One of the important factors in giving exclusive breastfeeding to the baby is the husbands’ role. The husbands need to be educated since it affects the attitude and support given to a woman who breastfeeds exclusively. This study aims to identify the relationship between husbands’ characteristics, knowledge, attitude, and support toward exclusive breastfeeding in a private hospital, West Indonesia. This study employs a quantitative method with correlation analysis using a cross-sectional study using a chi-squared test to analyze the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and husband’s support toward giving exclusive breastfeeding. The sample was taken from 51 husbands who had the second and third breastfed baby. Univariate analysis is used to analyze the data. Result: there is a significant relationship between the husbands’ knowledge towards exclusive breastfeeding and there is an insignificant relationship between the husbands’ attitude and support towards exclusive breastfeeding. Further socialization program and education are suggested to the husbands to acquire more knowledge in understanding the importance of exclusive breastfeeding as the husbands’ attitude and support toward it is still low.

BAHASA INDONESIA Air Susu Ibu Eksklusif merupakan pemberian air susu ibu kepada bayi sampai usiada enam bulan pertama tanpa menambahkan makanan apapun, seperti susu formula, madu, air putih, sari buah, dan bubur bayi. Abstract Background: Ectopic fat obesity and Triglycerides are risk factors for diabetes and multiple cardiovascular diseases, but the data on the relationship between Triglycerides and the risk of ectopic fat obesity are limited. The purpose of this study is to explore the connection between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, we retrospectively analyzed 15464 adult participants recruited by Murakami Memorial Hospital from 2004-2015(8430 men and 7034 women, average age 43.71±8.9), to performed the relationship between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity, we divided all patients into 4 groups according to the quartile of Triglycerides. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between Triglycerides and the risk of ectopic fat obesity, and the generalized additive model was used to identify the nonlinear relationship. Results: In the study population, the prevalence of ectopic fat obesity was 17.73%, and gradually increased in the quartile of Triglycerides (2.86,7.89,18.25 and 41.22% respectively, P < 0.001).After adjusting other covariables, Triglycerides was positively correlated with the risk of ectopic fat obesity (OR:1.55,95%CI:1.41-1.69, p<0.00001). Then we carried out smooth curve fitting and found that there was an inverted U-shaped curve relationship between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity, even if those adjusted covariables were removed from the model, the result remained unchanged, and the inflection point of the curve was 3.98. On the left side of the inflection point, Triglycerides was positively correlated with the risk of ectopic fat obesity(OR:1.784,95%CI:1.611-1.975,p<0.0001), while on the right side of the inflection point, there was a negative correlation (OR:0.519,95%CI:0.333-0.810,p=0.0039).Conclusions: Our research shows that there is a significant correlation between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity, this relation is not a simple linear relationship, but it was an inverted U-shaped curve relationship.

Abstract Background: This research aimed to investigate the relationship between haemoglobin (Hb) and growth hormone (GH) peak in children and adolescents with short stature. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a total of 787 children and adolescents with short stature. Anthropometric and biochemical indicators were measured at baseline. All patients underwent GH provocation tests with L-dopa and insulin to assess GH peak levels. Results: The univariate analysis results showed that Hb was positively associated with GH peak (β 0.07, P=0.001). Furthermore, a non-linear relationship was detected between Hb and GH peak in multivariate piecewise linear regression analysis, and the breakpoint was 123 g/L. GH peak increased with Hb elevation when the Hb level was greater than 123 g/L (β 0.08, 95% CI 0.01, 0.14; P=0.0207). However, when the Hb level was lower than 123 g/L, there was no significant relationship between Hb and GH peak (β -0.12, 95% CI -0.30, -0.06; P = 0.1867).Conclusion: In children and adolescents with short stature, we found a non-linear association between Hb and GH peak. These findings suggest that clinicians should pay more attention to Hb levels in patients with short stature.

Objective: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been used as markers of inflammation in mental illness. However, these indices have not been widely used in schizophrenia research in Chinese participants. Our aim was to use these ratios to explore the relationship between schizophrenia and inflammation. Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we collected total blood cell counts of 549 patients with schizophrenia and 930 healthy controls at Beijing Huilongguan Hospital in October 2019. We analyzed the subjects’ platelet, lymphocyte, monocyte, and neutrophil counts; compared the calculated NLR, MLR, and PLR between patients and healthy controls; and evaluated the correlations with age and gender. Results: Platelet and lymphocyte counts were significantly lower, while NLR and MLR were significantly higher, in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls. Additionally, monocyte count, lymphocyte count, MLR, and NLR were different between male and female subjects. Conclusion: This study supports the inflammatory hypothesis of schizophrenia in the Chinese population.
