In this paper, a novel procedure for optimal design of geometrically nonlinear submerged arches is proposed. It is based on the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers algorithm, a multi-method ensemble evolutionary approach for solving optimization problems. A novel arch shape parameterization is combined with the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers algorithm. This new parameterization allows considering geometrical parameters in the design process, in addition to the reduction of the bending moment carried out by the classical design approach. The importance of considering the second-order behaviour of the arch structure is shown by different numerical experiments. Moreover, it is shown that the use of Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers algorithm leads to nearly-optimal solutions, ensuring the stability of the structure, reducing the maximum absolute bending moment value, and complying with the serviceability structural restrictions.

AbstractOsseointegration is a fundamental phenomenon of dental implantology. It ensures the stability, the safety and the durability of dental implants and predictable clinical success in long-term. The geometric form of the implant is a defining parameter of osseointegration and implant-bone charge transfer. This is the essential constitutes of this study. In fact, we demonstrate using the finite elements method with tridimensional numerical computations, that the geometrical parameters of the implant conditionate the level and the repartition of the stresses, induced in the cortical bone and the spongy bone during the masticatory process, simulated here by dynamic charging. The effect of several parameters [size and conicity of the implant neck, size and radius of curvature of the implant apex] and the shape of the implant corps on the biomechanical behavior of the bone. The latest was analyzed in terms of variation of the equivalent stress induced in the bone. The purpose of this analysis was the developing of an implant form allowing stress relaxation, during the mastication process, in the living tissue.

The marine derrick sometimes operates under extreme weather conditions, especially wind; therefore, the buckling analysis of the components in the derrick is one of the critical contents of engineering safety research. This paper aimed to study the local stability of marine derrick and propose an analytical method for geometrically nonlinear problems. The rod in the derrick is simplified as a compression rod with simply supported ends, which is subjected to transverse uniform load. Considering the second-order effect, the differential equations were used to establish the deflection, rotation angle, and bending moment equations of the derrick rod under the lateral uniform load. This method was defined as a geometrically nonlinear analytical method. Moreover, the deflection deformation and stability of the derrick members were analyzed, and the practical calculation formula was obtained. The Ansys analysis results were compared with the calculation results in this paper.

Abstract This study investigates the stability of timber members subjected to simultaneously acting axial compression and bending moment, with possible risk for torsional and flexural–torsional buckling. This situation can occur in laterally supported members where one side of the member is braced but the other side is unbraced. In this case, the free side will buckle out of plane while the braced side will be prevented from torsional and flexural–torsional buckling. This problem can be evident for long members in timber-frame structures, which are subjected to high axial compression combined with bending moments in which the member is not sufficiently braced at both sides. This study is based on the design requirement stated in Eurocode 5. Solution methods discussed in this paper can be of interest within the framework of structural and building Engineering practices and education in which the stability of structural elements is investigated. Article Highlights This case study investigates some design situations where the timber member is not sufficiently braced. In this case, a stability problem associated with combined torsional buckling and flexural buckling can arise. The study shows that the torsional and/or flexural–torsional buckling of timber members can be important to control in order to fulfil the criteria of the stability of the member according to Eurocode 5 and help the structural engineer to achieve safer designs. The study investigates also a simplified solution to check the effect of flexural torsional buckling of laterally braced timber members.

This work devoted to an ellipsoidal head of pressure vessel under internal pressure load. The analysis is aimed at finding an optimum weight of ellipsoidal head of pressure vessel due to maximum working pressure that ensures its full charge with stresses by using imperialist competitive algorithm and genetic algorithm. In head of pressure vessel the region of its joint with the cylindrical shell is loaded with shear force and bending moments. The load causes high bending stresses in the region of the joint. Therefore, imperialist competitive algorithm was used here to find the optimum shape of a head with minimum weight and maximum working pressure which the shear force and the bending moment moved toward zero. Two different size ellipsoidal head examples are selected and studied. The imperialist competitive algorithm results are compared with the genetic algorithm results.

Abstract The JCSM concept (short for Jackup Combined Semisubmersible Multifunction Platform) is a new type of semisubmersible platform presented by the first author, which overcomes the shortcomings of the available semisubmersible platforms, and combines the advantages of the traditional semisubmersible platform, the Jackup platform and the new FPSO concept - IQFP. Due to the complicated interaction between stability and hydrodynamic performance, it is necessary to explore the effect of geometrical parameters of the main body on the stability and hydrodynamic performance in order to obtain the optimal design plan of a JCSM platform. Firstly, the structure components and innovations of the JCSM were briefly reviewed in order to facilitate readers to understand its full picture. Then, six independent geometric parameters were selected by carefully studying the shape characteristics of the initial design plan of a JCSM study case. Furthermore, the stability heights and motion responses of various floating bodies of the JCSM case with different geometric parameters in wave were calculated using boundary element method based on potential flow theory. Lastly, effect of the shape parameters on stability and hydrodynamic performance of the JCSM was qualitatively evaluated. The research would shed lights on the shape design of the JCSM main body.

The present paper analyzes the vibration issue of thin-walled beams under combined initial axial load and end moment in two cases with different boundary conditions, specifically the simply supported-end and the laterally fixed-end boundary conditions. The analytical expressions for the first natural frequencies of thin-walled beams were derived by two methods that are a method based on the existence of the roots theorem of differential equation systems and the Rayleigh method. In particular, the stability boundary of a beam can be determined directly from its first natural frequency expression. The analytical results are in good agreement with those from the finite element analysis software ANSYS Mechanical APDL. The research results obtained here are useful for those creating tooth blade designs of innovative frame saw machines.

Abstract Magnetic skyrmions are attracting much attention due to their nontrivial topology and high mobility to electric current. Nevertheless, suppression of the skyrmion Hall effect and maintaining high velocity of skyrmions with low energy cost are two major challenges concerning skyrmion-based spintronic devices. Here we show theoretically that in a nano-beam suffering appropriate bending moment, both Bloch-type and Néel-type skyrmions move with a vanishing Hall angle under a current density smaller than that required when the bending is absent. Moreover, bending alone can be used to move skyrmions, whose velocity is solved analytically from the Thiele equation. Generally speaking, inhomogeneous elastic fields affect the stability and dynamics of skyrmions, where the local stability is dominantly determined by the local bulk stress. These findings throw new light on how to drive skyrmions straightly with lower energy cost, which is vital for utilizing skyrmions as information carriers.

. A method of stability analysis for combined ship (oil carrier/platform ship type) at the stage of design study is presented. It should be noted that not all of ship’s main seaworthiness and operational characteristics are the result of a simple addition of the characteristics of an oil carrier and a platform ship. Their mutual influence takes place, which should be taken into account when analysing the stability in the multivariant optimization problems of internal and external design of such ships. This leads to the requirement to adjust the known methods of stability analysis at the initial stages of ship design, which was the purpose of the present work and its originality. Taking into account the multivariance of the task and the hull design type, the stability assessment will be carried out through the analysis of the metacentric height extreme value on the assumption that the requirements of Russian River Register for admissible heeling angle at static wind effect are met. In order to account for nonlinearity of static stability curve when inclining up to the angles of deck immersion into water and emergence of bilge, it is suggested to apply an approximate method of metacentric radius determination. The proposed method of combined ship stability assessment is recommended to apply at the stage of justification and analysis of ship’s key elements as a limitation in the problems of mathematical modeling of optimization of such type of ships. The method allows to exclude from further consideration at the design study stage the possible options that do not meet the requirements of seaworthiness.

The use of optimization methods in engineering is increasing. Process and product optimization, inverse problems, shape optimization, and topology optimization are frequent problems both in industry and science communities. In this paper, an optimization framework for engineering inverse problems such as the parameter identification and the shape optimization problems is presented. It inherits the large experience gain in such problems by the SiDoLo code and adds the latest developments in direct search optimization algorithms. User subroutines in Sdl allow the program to be customized for particular applications. Several applications in parameter identification and shape optimization topics using Sdl Lab are presented. The use of commercial and non-commercial (in-house) Finite Element Method codes to evaluate the objective function can be achieved using the interfaces pre-developed in Sdl Lab. The shape optimization problem of the determination of the initial geometry of a blank on a deep drawing square cup problem is analysed and discussed. The main goal of this problem is to determine the optimum shape of the initial blank in order to save latter trimming operations and costs.
