In this paper, the development process and validation of a self-assessment emotion tool (SAET) is described, which establishes an emotion-assessment method to improve pictorial expression design. The tool is based on an emotion set of emotional-cognition-derived rules obtained from an OCC model proposed by Ortony, Clore, and Collins, and the emotion set and expression design are validated by numerical computation of the dimensional space pleasure–arousal–dominance (PAD) and the cognitive assessment of emotion words. The SAET consists of twenty images that display a cartoon figure expressing ten positive and ten negative emotions. The instrument can be used during interactions with visual interfaces such as websites, posters, cell phones, and vehicles, and allows participants to select interface elements that elicit specific emotions. Experimental results show the validity of this type of tool in terms of both semantic discrimination of emotions and quantitative numerical validation.

Abstract This paper reflects on a case study of a user-centred concept development process for a Machine Learning (ML) based design tool, conducted at an industry partner. The resulting concept uses ML to match graphical user interface elements in sketches on paper to their digital counterparts to create consistent wireframes. A user study (N=20) with a working prototype shows that this concept is preferred by designers, compared to the previous manual procedure. Reflecting on our process and findings we discuss lessons learned for developing ML tools that respect practitioners’ needs and practices.

Energy efficiency projects deployment for Ukraine is one of the challenging task today. Ukrainian in­dustry faces very complex environment for project development as well as its deployment within organization nowadays. UA Policy struggle to keep place on the European market to have possibility not only be a part of global policy but to go forward and to bring benefits for macro and micro economy. Fresh breath by integration energy systems within project management into business model of organization let to move closer to hold under control energy efficiency projects realization and avoid financial risks. Environmental policy and energy policy play crucial role for Ukrainian transformation into European pla­yer. Presented proactive plan provides possibilities to deliver the intended economic and environmental benefits of the Ukrainian energy labelling and ecological design directives. These directives are in use or are under development process by increasing the rates of compliance with their energy efficiency requirements. To start from the energy efficiency development process investigation in order to have possibilities to make corrections on the stage of modeling and design can bring benefits and reduce costs for end users. To evaluate the efficiency of heat exchangers, there are over 40 different private integral energy efficiency criteria. Such a number makes the estimation of heat exchangers not always objective and sufficiently definite, which does not allow to algorithmize the task of determining the efficiency of heat exchangers. On the foundation of the system element representation for the heat exchange network, the concepts of energy potential and energy efficiency of energy exchange are proposed. The obtained equations allow us to determine the efficiency of energy exchange not only for an element of the heat exchange network, but also for a complex system as a whole with a minimum of information about the system

The article is devoted to the study of factors that have a negative impact on the well-being of employees in the workplace. Special attention is paid to the problem of presenteeism on the example of a large metallurgical enterprise. A review of foreign and domestic publications allows concluding that until now specialists do not have reliable and valid tools for studying the presenteeism phenomenon in organizations. The purpose of the research presented in the paper is to examine influence of the factors of the intra-organizational environment on the personnel well-being and assess the level of presenteeism at the enterprise. Empirical data were obtained by conducting a sociological survey of various categories of workers, as well as assessing the impact of presenteeism on the economic indicators of the studied enterprise. For the subsequent in-depth study of health problems in the workplace, the authors have developed a research tool based on the use of a digital service, which allows monitoring the self-feeling of employees by the self-assessment method, which determines the level of physical and psychosocial well-being of staff.

The existing tools for assessing the effectiveness of educational programs differ in the degree of effectiveness, applicability, and costs. The self-assessment method, which involves the determination of the level of expression of various qualities by students of educational programs before and after graduation. The method of assessing students' own competencies has significant limitations associated with social desirability. Nevertheless, the article analyzes the possibilities of using this method to assess the effectiveness of corporate educational programs. The results of using the self-assessment method to assess the effectiveness of corporate educational programs conducted in large organizations are presented. The possibilities and limitations of using various kinds of criteria for evaluating themselves by listeners are substantiated. The conclusion is made about the possibility of using the self-assessment method in the case of the focus of educational programs on the development of meta-competencies of managers. The article provides data on the assessment of learning outcomes, discusses the potential reasons for the differences obtained in the framework of projects, as well as the possibilities and limitations of using the self-assessment method to assess the educational effect of corporate training programs.

In this chapter, the principles and guidelines that should be borne in mind when designing and developing some digital elements such as ‘instructions', ‘tasks', ‘(reading) texts' and ‘self-assessment tests' in interactive multimedia listening software (MLS) for second/foreign language learning (SLL/FLL) are focused on. The stages of software design and development are categorized into six separate stages: (1) feasibility, (2) setting up a team of experts, (3) designing, (4) programming, (5) testing and (6) evaluating (Turel & McKenna, 2013, pp.188-190). Each stage as well as each digital element of interactive MLS is vitally important in the design and development process of cost effective applications. A wide range of principles and guidelines need to be taken into account at each stage as well as in the design and development of each element so that we can design and develop every single digital element of interactive MLS efficiently. As a whole, all of these can enable us to design ideal and customised/adapted MLS for SLL/FLL.

This article presents an evaluation of the use of peer and self-assessment as part of the learning process in a public speaking assessment coursework, with students from two departments taking part. Students were assessed by themselves, their peers and the lecturer using an online platform, Google forms, utilizing a set of rubrics. The marks were compared between markers to identify similarities and differences. After the process, student feedback on the experience was obtained using a questionnaire utilizing the Likert seven point scale to rate different questions. Analysis of the marks awarded found that whilst there might be correlations between different markers (i.e. peer – self) for marks on certain subsections of the work, there was no overall correlation between marks. Student perceptions to the exercise indicated that the use of rubrics was well received; students considered it a fair assessment method and it provided information on how to perform well in the assessment.

The current study investigates students’ use of Microsoft Teams as a collaborative knowledge building platform for a group sustainability assessment project. Ashby’s sustainability assessment method was used to provide scaffolding. Surveys (n=16) were administered to assess the nature of student collaboration, including students’ experiences using collaboration tools in the past, the activities students engaged in while working on the group project in MS Teams, self-assessment of collaborative abilities, comfort with giving, receiving and sharing comments and feedback, assessment of the effectiveness of Ashby’s sustainability assessment method in developing these abilities, and their overall assessment of MS Teams as a collaborative knowledge building tool. Students rated their collaborative abilities to be good to excellent and felt that the project was effective in developing those abilities. They are comfortable providing and receiving feedback and sharing their contributions openly. They found MS Teams to be extremely useful, and better than alternative platforms for key tasks including messaging, file sharing and collaborative authoring.

Introduction: Geriatric Emergency Department (ED) guidelines recommend systematic screening of older patients for geriatric syndromes. However, compliance issues to this recommendation have already been observed. Self-assessment tools could be an interesting solution as self-assessed general, mental and physical health was shown to be predictive of functional decline and mortality. The Older Americans Resources and Services scale (OARS), is a simple geriatric functional assessment scale that is widely used by professionals to quantify patients’ ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). However, its use as a self-assessment tool has never been tested. Objective: to evaluate the feasibility of the self-assessed OARS compared to its standard administration by a research assistant (RA) in older ED patients. Methods: A planned sub-analysis of a single center randomized crossover pilot study in 2018 was realized. Patients aged ≥65 who consulted to the ED for any medical reason were included. Patients were excluded if they: 1) required resuscitation (CTAS 1); 2) were unable to consent/to speak French; 3) had a physical condition preventing the use of an electronic tablet. Patients were randomized 1:1 to either 1) tablet-based functional status self-assessment or 2) the RAs questionnaire administration at first, after which they crossed-over to the other assessment method. Paired t-tests were used to assess the score differences. Results: 60 patients were included. Mean age was 74.4 ± 7.6 and 34 (56.7%) participants were women. Mean OARS score according to RA was 25.1 ± 3.3 and mean self-assessed OARS score was 26.4 ± 2.5 (p < 0.0001). There was also differences when looking at the AVQ and AIVQ separately. Mean AVQ scores were 12.5 ± 1.8 and 13.5 ± 0.9 (p < 0.0001) and mean AIVQ scores were 12.6 ± 1.8 and 12.9 ± 1.8 (p = 0.04) for RA assessment and self-assessment, respectively. Conclusion: Our results show a statistically significant difference between RA assessment and patient self-assessment of functional status, and this difference seems to be more pronounced regarding AVQ than AIVQ. The study confirms that self-assessment of functional status by older ED patients is feasible, but further testing is required in order to confirm the validity and psychometric values of this self-administered version of the OARS.

Heuristic evaluation is a useful tool for non-usability experts to evaluate their product for usability and produce lists of guidelines for product designers to avoid usability problems early in the development process. However, Nielsen’s 10 original us ability heuristics (Nielsen, 1990) only showed to help users find slightly over 50% of the usability problems found by experts. This highlights the need for domain-specific heuristic lists. An example of one of these domain-specific lists is VR PLAY (Desurvire & Kreminski, 2018), a heuristic list to help virtual-reality game developers evaluate their games and adhere to usability principles. The current research evaluated Elder Scrolls: Skyrim VR for usability problems that were then categorized using VR PLAY. Results showed some missing usability principles in VR PLAY, including guidelines for control design, user interface elements, and navigation. This study proposes changes to VR PLAY to include the principles.
