Constant detection and monitoring of archaeological sites and objects have always been an important national goal for many countries. The early identification of changes is crucial to preventive conservation. Archaeologists have always considered using service drones to automate collecting data on and below the ground surface of archaeological sites, with cost and technical barriers being the main hurdles against the wide-scale deployment. Advances in thermal imaging, depth imaging, drones, and artificial intelligence have driven the cost down and improved the quality and volume of data collected and processed. This paper proposes an end-to-end framework for archaeological sites detection and monitoring using autonomous service drones. We mount RGB, depth, and thermal cameras on an autonomous drone for low-altitude data acquisition. To align and aggregate collected images, we propose two-stage multimodal depth-to-RGB and thermal-to-RGB mosaicking algorithms. We then apply detection algorithms to the stitched images to identify change regions and design a user interface to monitor these regions over time. Our results show we can create overlays of aligned thermal and depth data on RGB mosaics of archaeological sites. We tested our change detection algorithm and found it has a root mean square error of 0.04. To validate the proposed framework, we tested our thermal image stitching pipeline against state-of-the-art commercial software. We cost-effectively replicated its functionality while adding a new depth-based modality and created a user interface for temporally monitoring changes in multimodal views of archaeological sites.

Quick identification of building and roads is critical for execution of tactical US military operations in an urban environment. To this end, a gridded, referenced, satellite images of an objective, often referred to as a gridded reference graphic or GRG, has become a standard product developed during intelligence preparation of the environment. At present, operational units identify key infrastructure by hand through the work of individual intelligence officers. Recent advances in Convolutional Neural Networks, however, allows for this process to be streamlined through the use of object detection algorithms. In this paper, we describe an object detection algorithm designed to quickly identify and label both buildings and road intersections present in an image. Our work leverages both the U-Net architecture as well the SpaceNet data corpus to produce an algorithm that accurately identifies a large breadth of buildings and different types of roads. In addition to predicting buildings and roads, our model numerically labels each building by means of a contour finding algorithm. Most importantly, the dual U-Net model is capable of predicting buildings and roads on a diverse set of test images and using these predictions to produce clean GRGs.

AbstractTo date, non-wear detection algorithms commonly employ a 30, 60, or even 90 mins interval or window in which acceleration values need to be below a threshold value. A major drawback of such intervals is that they need to be long enough to prevent false positives (type I errors), while short enough to prevent false negatives (type II errors), which limits detecting both short and longer episodes of non-wear time. In this paper, we propose a novel non-wear detection algorithm that eliminates the need for an interval. Rather than inspecting acceleration within intervals, we explore acceleration right before and right after an episode of non-wear time. We trained a deep convolutional neural network that was able to infer non-wear time by detecting when the accelerometer was removed and when it was placed back on again. We evaluate our algorithm against several baseline and existing non-wear algorithms, and our algorithm achieves a perfect precision, a recall of 0.9962, and an F1 score of 0.9981, outperforming all evaluated algorithms. Although our algorithm was developed using patterns learned from a hip-worn accelerometer, we propose algorithmic steps that can easily be applied to a wrist-worn accelerometer and a retrained classification model.

Archaeological sites are affected by changes due to a natural deterioration process over time. If not prevented, this may compromise the functionality of the cultural property, and in turn become pathological and result in degradation. Monitoring through innovative technologies paves the way towards an effective planned maintenance activity and therefore preventive conservation. The monitoring project of the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo was inspired by the desire to build a system of protection and conservation at the service of sustainable exploitation. Established by Ministerial Decree 12 January 2017 in art. 3, the park is an independent cultural site of the Ministry of Culture. It includes the central area of Rome—the Roman Forum, the Palatine, the Colosseum and the Domus Aurea—and has an extension of about 77 hectares, of which about 32 are buildings. With these objectives, the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo has launched a static and dynamic monitoring project consisting of six fundamental levels of activities. The project involves the creation of a multi-parameter system of permanent control of the entire archaeological area, with the associated indicators of the level of risk, for which it is necessary the combined use of innovative technologies.

Various UNet architecture-based image change detection algorithms promote the development of image change detection, but there are still some defects. First, under the encoder–decoder framework, the low-level features are extracted many times in multiple dimensions, which generates redundant information; second, the relationship between each feature layer is not modeled so sufficiently that it cannot produce the optimal feature differentiation representation. This paper proposes a remote image change detection algorithm based on the multi-feature self-attention fusion mechanism UNet network, abbreviated as MFSAF UNet (multi-feature self-attention fusion UNet). We attempt to add multi-feature self-attention mechanism between the encoder and decoder of UNet to obtain richer context dependence and overcome the two above-mentioned restrictions. Since the capacity of convolution-based UNet network is directly proportional to network depth, and a deeper convolutional network means more training parameters, so the convolution of each layer of UNet is replaced as a separated convolution, which makes the entire network to be lighter and the model’s execution efficiency is slightly better than the traditional convolution operation. In addition to these, another innovation point of this paper is using preference to control loss function and meet the demands for different accuracies and recall rates. The simulation test results verify the validity and robustness of this approach.

Abstract Structural light active imaging can obtain more information about the target scene, which is widely used in image registration,3D reconstruction of objects and motion detection. Due to the random fluctuation of water surface and complex underwater environment, the current corner detection algorithm has the problems of false detection and uncertainty. This paper proposes a corner detection algorithm based on the region centroid extraction. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional detection algorithms, the proposed algorithm can extract the feature point information of the image in real time, which is of great significance to the subsequent image restoration.

Abstract. In this study we analyse the factors of variability of Sentinel-1 C-band radar backscattering over tropical rainforests, and propose a method to reduce the effects of this variability on deforestation detection algorithms. To do so, we developed a random forest regression model that relates Sentinel-1 gamma nought values with local climatological data and forest structure information. The model was trained using long time-series of 26 relevant variables, sampled over 6 undisturbed tropical forests areas. The resulting model explained 71.64% and 73.28% of the SAR signal variability for VV and VH polarizations, respectively. Once the best model for every polarization was selected, it was used to stabilize extracted pixel-level data of forested and non-deforested areas, which resulted on a 10 to 14% reduction of time-series variability, in terms of standard deviation. Then a statistically robust deforestation detection algorithm was applied to the stabilized time-series. The results show that the proposed method reduced the rate of false positives on both polarizations, especially on VV (from 21% to 2%, α=0.01). Meanwhile, the omission errors increased on both polarizations (from 27% to 37% in VV and from 27% to 33% on VV, α=0.01). The proposed method yielded slightly better results when compared with an alternative state-of-the-art approach (spatial normalization).

BLAST can achieve high speed data communication. Its signal detection directly affects performance of BLAST receiver. This paper introduced several signal detection algorithmsZF algorithm, MMSE algorithm, ZF-SIC algorithm and MMSE-SIC algorithm. The simulation results show that the traditional ZF algorithm has the worst performance, the traditional MMSE algorithm and the ZF-SIC algorithm is similar, but with the increase of the SNR, the performance of ZF-SIC algorithm is better than MMSE algorithm. MMSE-SIC algorithm has the best detection performance in these detection algorithms.

The existing edge detection algorithms with wavelet transform need to artificially set the threshold value and are lack of flexibility.To salve the limitations, in this paper, we propose a WT(wavelet transform)-based edge detection algorithm with adaptive threshold, which uses threshold value iteration method to achieve adaptive threshold setting. Comparison of experiment results for the CT image shows that the method which improve the clarity and continuity of the image edge can effectively distinguish edge and noise, and get more completely information of the edge. It has good application value in the fields of medical clinical diagnosis and image processing.

 In a complex network system, the structure of the network is an extremely important element for the analysis of the system, and the study of community detection algorithms is key to exploring the structure of the complex network. Traditional community detection algorithms would represent the network using an adjacency matrix based on observations, which may contain redundant information or noise that interferes with the detection results. In this paper, we propose a community detection algorithm based on density clustering. In order to improve the performance of density clustering, we consider an algorithmic framework for learning the continuous representation of network nodes in a low-dimensional space. The network structure is effectively preserved through network embedding, and density clustering is applied in the embedded low-dimensional space to compute the similarity of nodes in the network, which in turn reveals the implied structure in a given network. Experiments show that the algorithm has superior performance compared to other advanced community detection algorithms for real-world networks in multiple domains as well as synthetic networks, especially when the network data chaos is high.
