This paper is dedicated to a review of the international effort to map the future of nanoelectronics from materials to systems for the new electronics industry. The following sections are highlighted: the Roadmap structure with the international teams, the methodology and historical evolution, the various eras of scaling, the new ecosystems and computer industry, the evolving supply chain, the development of SoC and SiP, the advent of the Internet of Everything and the 5G communications, the dramatic increase of data centers, the power challenge, the technology fusion, heterogeneous and system integration, the emerging technologies, devices and computing architectures, and the main challenges for future applications.

The Internet of Everything is an interdisciplinary concept that involves technology, applications and people in a framework where emerging technologies can give a relevant contribute in education and in different application areas, namely in the scope of the interactive mobile technologies. This Special Issue collects a set of contributions to this topic resulting from the works presented in the Experiment@ International Workshop 2016 “The Emerging Technologies on the Internet of Everything” – ETIoE’16, held at University of the Azores (Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal). These articles comprise different perspectives in this field from research work and application development to case studies.

The next big wave, the Internet of Things or Internet of Everything (IoT/IoE) is on the way. What does that mean for semiconductor packaging, assembly and test? What are the requirements? What solutions can be provided? The market will be wide and fragmented. Many different solutions will be needed. Flexibility and the capability to customize system solutions will be crucial. The fact is, it will be all about smart system integration, integration of sensors, MEMS, connectivity and memory: more functionality on less space in small and thin System-in-Package (SiP) and Package-on-Package (PoP). There will not be one specific packaging technology for IoT/IoE, and no new “IoT/IoE Packaging Technology”. The toolbox is here already, and further features required to meet the needs of future IoT/IoE modules are under development. That is actually good news, as the cost pressure will be high, and materialization of existing manufacturing environment, of mature and yielding packaging technologies will be a key for success.

<p class="0abstract">In this paper, a virtual PLC environment aiming at assisting automation teaching, learning and e-learning is proposed and discussed. The main contributions are a virtual PLC environment propped on a local and remote applications, along with the comparison of two teaching and learning methodologies, one local, while the other offers a remote interaction with the system. The proposed framework fits in the emerging technologies on the Internet of Everything, having the potential of promoting the integration and communication of virtual and real systems.</p>

The Internet of Things (IoT) domain has been one of the fastest growing areas in the computer industry for the last few years. Consequently, IoT applications are becoming the dominant work load for many data centers. This has implications for the designers of data centers, as they need to meet their customers' requirements. Since it is not easy to use real applications for the design and test of data center setups, a tool is required to emulate real applications but is easy to configure, scale and deploy in a data center. This paper will introduce a simple but generic way to model the work load of typical IoT applications, in order to have a realistic and reproducible way to emulate IT loads for data centers. IoT application designers are in the process of harmonizing their approaches on how architectures should look, which building blocks are needed, and how they should interwork. While all IoT subdomains are diverse when it comes to the details, the architectural blueprints are becoming more and more aligned. These blueprints are called reference architectures and incorporate similar patterns for the underlying application primitives. This paper will introduce an approach to decompose IoT applications into such application primitives, and use them to emulate a workload as it would be created by the modeled application. The paper concludes with an example application of the IoT Workload Emulation in the BodenTypeDC experiment, where new cooling approaches for data centers have been tested under realistic work load conditions.

The evolution of the Internet has revolutionised the sourcing and procurement processes in organisations in every industry. The focus of this paper is to analyse the perception of business users on the factors which impact the usage of eprocurement systems in the biomedical industry. There are four factors identified in this research: i.e. control and compliance, cost savings, process automation, and improvements and transparency. The benefit of achieving process automation is the first biggest factor, followed by the need for control and compliance, and transparency, being the second and third factors respectively. The fourth factor, cost savings, is ignored because the users perceived that cost savings will not be realised in the short term, and the returns from the investment could be a couple of years after the eprocurement system has been fully operational. The research also concludes that the ability to perform business analytics and to strengthen the supply chain are the most important factors in measuring the success in the adoption of e-procurement systems

The shift to an integrated IBS construction approach requires enhanced supply chain integration to improve the productivity as well as the poor quality of human behavioual aspect in IBS project. This paper is to identify the challenges at each tier between players to facilitate supply chain integration among the IBS players. Findings adopted from semi-structured interview revealed the critical attitude issues of human factors, lack of interaction and sharing knowledge between interdisciplinary people. The findings of this study is useful to improve integration of supply chain and enhance innovation and sharing interaction between players in the IBS Malaysian construction project environment.© 2016. The customer-oriented approach is actively developing within the global trend of the modern industrial revolution that is Industry 4.0. The focus on customer interests has led to cooperation and integration in supply chains, improving their efficiency and increasing transparency, awareness, and trust. However, an issue emerging in this scenario is that conventional supply chain management (SCM) procedures are unable to identify the potential proposal for a particular user. Modern businesses need to build integrated supply chains, which require well-developed infrastructure and easily available complementary services, relying on logistics as a networking technology. Supply chains of this generation grow from traditional individual desynchronized economic relations (linear models with some feedback and the simplest network configurations) to scalable, adaptable, harmonized partner networks. The logistics potential allows additional income by reducing the total costs of participants in the network, thus increasing the competitiveness of companies; this can be implemented based on new models of interaction in the current digital environment through, firstly, system integration. Our goal consists of identifying the essential characteristics of system integration and substantiating the methods for its implementation in the digital economy. The study is based on the analysis of global best practices, considering the reports from leading consulting companies and competent analytical agencies. We have confirmed that the role of a virtual system integrator of supply chains belongs to logistics platforms; the effects of a transition to platform business models are discussed in detail.
