In order to increase the surface hardness and wear-resistance property of sled track slippers, a Ni80Al20-MoS2 composite coating was fabricated on the surface of a stainless steel 0Cr18Ni9Ti sled track slipper via atmospheric spray and hot dipping. The microstructure, composition and surface hardness of coatings under different spraying powers were characterized and measured. The wear-resistant properties of the slipper substrate and the coating were also checked. The results showed that the higher the spraying power was, the greater the smoothness, density and hardness was of the Ni80Al20 coating, while the thickness initially increased and then decreased. When the spraying power was 18 kW, the thickness was 342.5 μm, the surface hardness was 304.1 Hv0.2, and the coating was composed of Ni, Al, Ni3Al, NiAl and a little Al2O3. The friction coefficient of the slipper substrate against GCr15 balls at room temperature in air was 0.7, while the coated substrate with MoS2 lubrication film was 0.3 and the volume wear rate declined by 1/5. The friction coefficient of the Ni80Al20 coating was 0.5 and the Ni80Al20-MoS2 composite coating was 0.15, while the volume wear rate declined by 1/4 and 1/3.

Abstract To improve the wear resistance of polyurethane (PU) coating and its adhesion to the steel substrate, a series of simple and practicable techniques were designed to mix nano-SiO2 with PU powder to cast a coating layer onto the steel. When the addition of nano-SiO2 was small, a network structure of PU-SiO2 was produced. It improved the wear resistance of the composite coating and its adhesion to the steel substrate. When the addition of nano-SiO2 was excessive, agglomerated nano-SiO2 particles not only affected the bond between the PU resin and the steel substrate but also became abrasive materials, intensifying the abrasion of the composite coating during friction. It resulted in lower bonding strength and poorer wear resistance of the composite coating. The wear rate and friction coefficient of 2 wt.% SiO2/PU composite coating were 1.52×10−6 cm3/min N and 0.31, respectively. Its wear resistance was about 10 times as high as that of the pure PU coating. Furthermore, a simple and practicable installation was designed to test the bonding strength between the coating and the steel substrate. The bonding strength between 2 wt.% SiO2/PU composite coating and the steel substrate was 7.33 MPa, which was 39% higher than that of the pure PU coating.

The graphene containing Ni-based composite coatings with different graphene addition amounts were prepared on 45 steel surface by using dipulse composite electrodeposition technology. The tribological behavior of composite coating was tested by against GCr15 steel pin under the dry condition. The friction coefficient of composite coating is 20-30% lower than pure Cr coating, their wear rates are almost in the same magnitude. Compared with 45 steel, the friction coefficient of composite coating decreases and wear rate falls over 50%.

A considerable test was made to figure out the effects of temperature and sliding conditions on the wear properties of the translucent Dy--Sialon. The friction coefficient was 0.54 at RT, 0.26 at 100 oC, and 0.81 at 600 oC respectively under an applied load of 5N. The wear rate was 6.91×10-15 at RT and 1.0×10-15 at 100 oC for the same Dy--Sialon sample. Obviously Dy-Sialon shows an excellent wear resistance under a suitable sliding condition, a load of 5N and at 100 oC. This appears attractive and important for Dy-Sialon ceramics to be used as a type of special wear resistant materials, with an optical translucence.

In this paper, we report on the tribological and wear properties of Ti3SiC2 and its derivatives. Coarse-grained Ti3SiC2 was not wear resistant at room temperature. Preoxidation of the material at 700 °C for 5 h also failed to ameliorate the situation at room temperature. Addition of 20 vol.% Cu in the matrix improved the wear rate for up to 1500 m; beyond that distance the friction and wear increased. Ti3SiC2 tested at 500 °C showed improved wear resistance most probably due to the formation of oxide tribofilms. More work is being done to understand the basic mechanism behind this behavior.

Cr3C2-NiCr has high quality of wear resistant properties and is widely used in abrasive environment. In this paper, Cr3C2-NiCr coating was prepared on 45 steel by laser cladding technology. Analysis and research of the coatings were achieved by SEM and XRD to determine the main component and the different region on coatings. The hardness and the element component were investigated by micro-hardness tester and EDS. Abrasion tests were performed to contrast the wear resistance of two materials. The results indicate that the hardness of the coatings is nearly 3 times as the substrate. The coatings are well combined with the substrate and the phase of Cr3C2 has a large proportion in the coatings. Abrasion tests show that the average of wear rate on substrate is 5.2 times as the coatings.

Nitriding is usually used to improve the surface properties of steel materials. In this way, the wear resistance of steels is improved. We conducted a series of studies in order to investigate the microstructural, mechanical and tribological properties of salt bath nitrided AISI 4140 steel. The present study has two parts. For the first phase, the tribological behavior of the AISI 4140 steel which was nitrided in sulfinuz salt bath (SBN) was compared to the behavior of the same steel which was untreated. After surface characterization using metallography, microhardness and sliding wear tests were performed on a block-on-cylinder machine in which carbonized AISI 52100 steel discs were used as the counter face. For the examined AISI 4140 steel samples with and without surface treatment, the evolution of both the friction coefficient and of the wear behavior were determined under various loads, at different sliding velocities and a total sliding distance of 1000 m. The test results showed that wear resistance increased with the nitriding process, friction coefficient decreased due to the sulfur in salt bath and friction coefficient depended systematically on surface hardness. For the second part of this study, four artificial neural network (ANN) models were designed to predict the weight loss and friction coefficient of the nitrided and unnitrided AISI 4140 steel. Load, velocity and sliding distance were used as input. Back-propagation algorithm was chosen for training the ANN. Statistical measurements of R2, MAE and RMSE were employed to evaluate the success of the systems. The results showed that all the systems produced successful results.

through super-hard wear-resistant surface electrode surfacing D707 in Low-carbon steel. We have analysis the effect of welding process parameters and post-weld heat treatment process on low carbon steel surface hardness of cladding layer. The experimental results show that: after quenching hardness value no significant change; But after annealing the hardness value decreased and after annealing the crystal grain of the underlying tissues uniformization become tiny. micro-hardness testing is carried out in the weld cross-section, we have find out that from the base metal to the cladding layer the surface hardness values is getting higher and higher, while the indentation is getting smaller and smaller. Because hardness is a measure of wear resistance materials, thus it can indirectly show that when low-carbon steel surface electrode in the super-hard wear-resistant surfacing welding layer, it can improve the surface hardness of low carbon steel and improve wear resistance of low carbon steel surface.

Electroless nickels have been used in practical applications as versatile materials for anti-wear. The wear resistance is well-improved as a composite coating by incorporating particles. Composite platting offers various mechanical and electoronic functions, depending on the combination of a material matrix and particles deposited. Among them Ni-P plating reinforced with SiC particles have been growing in importance owing to its high hardness and better anti-wear properties. In this study, a Ni-P-SiC/Ni-P-SiC system was evaluated using a ball-on-plate type reciprocating tester, and the results were compared with that of SiC/SiC system at room temperature. As the results, the Ni-P-SiC/Ni-P-SiC system with the surfaces where SiC particles were appeared in clumps had the low frictional coefficient around 0.1 even in water.
