Electrolyte–insulator–semiconductor (EIS) sensors, used in applications such as pH sensing and sodium ion sensing, are the most basic type of ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) membranes. Currently, some of the most popular techniques for synthesizing such sensors are chemical vapor deposition, reactive sputtering and sol-gel deposition. However, there are certain limitations on such techniques, such as reliability concerns and isolation problems. In this research, a novel design of an EIS membrane consisting of an optical material of indium gallium oxide (IGO) was demonstrated. Compared with conventional treatment such as annealing, Ti doping and CF4 plasma treatment were incorporated in the fabrication of the film. Because of the effective treatment of doping and plasma treatment, the defects were mitigated and the membrane capacitance was boosted. Therefore, the pH sensitivity can be increased up to 60.8 mV/pH. In addition, the hysteresis voltage can be improved down to 2.1 mV, and the drift voltage can be suppressed to as low as 0.23 mV/h. IGO-based membranes are promising for future high-sensitivity and -stability devices integrated with optical applications.

ABSTRACTOrganically modified silica gels and dye-doped silica gels have been patterned into micrometer-scale structures on a substrate using micro molding in capillaries (MIMIC). This approach is from a class of elastomeric stamping and molding techniques collectively known as soft lithography. Soft lithography and sol-gel processing share attractive features in that they are relatively benign processes performed at ambient conditions, which makes both techniques compatible with a wide variety of organic molecules, molecular assemblies, and biomolecules. The combination of sol-gel and soft lithography, therefore, holds enormous promise as a tool for microfabrication of materials with optical, chemical, or biological functionality that are not readily patterned with conventional methods. This paper describes our investigation of micro-patterned organic-inorganic hybrid materials containing indicator dyes for microfluidic sensor applications. Reversible colorimetric pH sensing via entrapped reagents is demonstrated in a prototype microfluidic sensor element. Patterned structures range from one to tens of micrometers in cross-section and are up to centimeters in length. Fundamental chemical processing issues associated with mold filling, cracking and sensor stability are discussed.

In this letter, a high breakdown voltage GaN HEMT device fabricated on semi-insulating self-standing GaN substrate is presented. High quality AlGaN/GaN epilayer was grown on self-standing GaN substrate by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. A 0.8μm gate length GaN HEMT device was fabricated with oxygen plasma treatment. By using oxygen plasma treatment, gate forward working voltage is increased, and a breakdown voltage of more than 170V is demonstrated. The measured maximum drain current of the device is larger than 700 mA/mm at 4V gate bias voltage. The maximum transconductance of the device is 162 mS/mm. In addition, high frequency performance of the GaN HEMT device is also obtained. The current gain cutoff frequency and power gain cutoff frequency are 19.7 GHz and 32.8 GHz, respectively. A high fT-LG product of 15.76 GHzμm indicating that homoepitaxy technology is helpful to improve the frequency performance of the device.

PVD (physical vapor deposition) and CVD (chemical vapor deposition) have gained greater significance in the last two decades with the mandatory shift from electrodeposition processes to clean deposition processes due to environmental, public safety, and health concerns. Due to the frequent use of coatings in several industrial sectors, the importance of studying the chromium coating processes through PVD–sputtering can be realized, investing in a real alternative to electroplated hexavalent chromium, usually denominated by chromium 6, regularly applied in electrodeposition processes of optical products in the automotive industry. At an early stage, experimental tests were carried out to understand which parameters are most suitable for obtaining chromium coatings with optical properties. To study the coating in a broad way, thickness and roughness analysis of the coatings obtained using SEM and AFM, adhesion analyzes with the scratch-test and transmittance by spectrophotometry were carried out. It was possible to determine that the roughness and transmittance decreased with the increase in the number of layers, the thickness of the coating increased linearly, and the adhesion and resistance to climatic tests remained positive throughout the study. Thus, this study allows for the understanding that thin multilayered Cr coatings can be applied successfully to polymeric substrates regarding optical applications in the automotive industry.

ABSTRACTDoped diamond films grown by chemical vapor techniques has been used to study hydrogen and oxygen terminated diamond. It is known that the electrical characteristics of metal-diamond interface are strongly affected by the diamond surface features. O2 plasma treatment was used as a cleaning procedure for as grown diamond samples leading to changes in the capacitance measurements after treatment. The alteration in the characteristics of the samples can be attributed to the surface adsorbates like hydrogen and water vapor present in the atmosphere. The results indicates that the O2 plasma treatment was effective in cleaning the surface revealing the expected features of a p-type diamond film.

Single-crystalline GeS nanoribbons were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition for the first time. The nanoribbon photodetectors respond to the entire visible incident light with a response edge at around 750 nm and a high responsivity, indicating their promising application for high performance broadband visible-light photo-detection.
