A novel Schottky diode frequency doubler in E-band, using biased series-connected diodes in the output waveguide, is reported. The doubler was implemented using a GaAs Schottky Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) process with integrated capacitors and beam leads. A comparison is made with a hybrid doubler using a more conventional single-ended configuration with two discrete diodes in a planar transmission line circuit. Both devices exhibit excellent performance over the 67–78 GHz design bandwidth, with the novel MMIC design producing 25 to 55 mW at 12 to 22% power conversion efficiency. Good agreement of measurements with simulations was also found.

The present work proposes a 180–225 GHz broadband frequency doubler monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) based on a novel Schottky barrier diode (SBD) terminal structure denoted as a Schottky metal-brim (SMB). Compared with an MMIC adopting the conventional SBD terminal structure, preliminary measurements show that the maximum output power of the MMIC adopting the SMB structure increases from 0.216 mW at 206 GHz to 0.914 mW at 208 GHz. Analysis of the nonlinear current–voltage and capacitance–voltage characteristics of the two terminal structures based on an extended one-dimensional drift-diffusion model, indicates that the SMB structure provides significantly better conversion efficiency than the conventional SBD structure by eliminating the accumulation of charge and additional current paths near the Schottky electrode edge. It provides a feasible scheme for the optimization of MMIC applications requiring high power and high efficiency.

A Ka-Band, High Efficiency, Small Size Spatial Combiner (SPC) is proposed in this paper, which uses an innovatively matched quadruple Fin Lines to microstrip (FLuS) transitions. At the date of this paper and at the Author's best knowledge no such FLuS innovative transitions have been reported in literature before. These transitions are inserted into a WR28 waveguide T-junction, in order to allow the integration of 16 Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA's). A computational electromagnetic model using the finite elements method has been implemented. A mean insertion loss of 2 dB is achieved with a return loss better the 10 dB in the 31-37 GHz bandwidth.

In this review, the unique properties of intrinsically conducting polymer (ICP) in biomedical engineering fields are summarized. Polythiophene and its valuable derivatives are known as potent materials that can broadly be applied in biosensors, DNA, and gene delivery applications. Moreover, this material plays a basic role in curing and promoting anti-HIV drugs. Some of the thiophene’s derivatives were chosen for different experiments and investigations to study their behavior and effects while binding with different materials and establishing new compounds. Many methods were considered for electrode coating and the conversion of thiophene to different monomers to improve their functions and to use them for a new generation of novel medical usages. It is believed that polythiophenes and their derivatives can be used in the future as a substitute for many old-fashioned ways of creating chemical biosensors polymeric materials and also drugs with lower side effects yet having a more effective response. It can be noted that syncing biochemistry with biomedical engineering will lead to a new generation of science, especially one that involves high-efficiency polymers. Therefore, since polythiophene can be customized with many derivatives, some of the novel combinations are covered in this review.

A novel 4H-SiC MESFET was presented, and its direct current (DC), alternating current (AC) characteristics and power added efficiency (PAE) were studied. The novel structure improves the saturation current (Idsat) and transconductance (gm) by adding a heavily doped region, reduces the gate-source capacitance (Cgs) by adding a lightly doped region and improves the breakdown voltage (Vb) by embedding an insulated region (Si3N4). Compared to the double-recessed (DR) structure, the saturation current, the transconductance, the breakdown voltage, the maximum oscillation frequency (fmax), the maximum power added efficiency and the maximum theoretical output power density (Pmax) of the novel structure is increased by 24%, 21%, 9%, 11%, 14% and 34%, respectively. Therefore, the novel structure has excellent performance and has a broader application prospect than the double recessed structure.

An efficient automated milk detector based on freezing point depression is designed. This detector shares characters of high efficiency and good stability with accuracy and automation. Its main parts include temperature sensor of IC (Integrated Circuit), pinion-rack mechanism and crank-rocker mechanism and electronic control system. Monitoring in-situ change of milk freezing curve and developing efficiency of sampling can be available by means of pinion-rack mechanism and IC temperature sensor mechatronics design. As a result, adulterating status of milk can be discriminated in a rapid and accurate and automated way. The detector may be employed to detect liquid foods other than milk as well.

This paper proposes a new control method to regulate the power flow into multiple receivers. This system consists of one transmitter controller and three receiver controllers. They work independently to decide the power distribution with their combined operation. The simulated and experimental models have been built, and the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis results. The proposed method is robust, flexible, and generalizable, and can be employed under various wireless charging conditions.

Abstract. A widely used instrument for collecting size-segregated particles is the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). In this work, a 10-stage MOUDI (cut-point diameter of 10 µm to 56 nm) was used to collect samples in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Martinska, Croatia. Filters, collected with and without rotation, were cut in half and analyzed for nine elements (As, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mn, Pb, Sb, V, Zn) using laser ablation ICP-MS. Elemental image maps (created with ImageJ) were converted to concentrations using NIST SRM 2783. Statistical analysis of the elemental maps indicated that for submicron particles (stages 6–10), ablating 10 % of the filter (0.5 cm2, 20 min ablation time) was sufficient to give values in good agreement (±10 %) to analysis of larger parts of the filter and with good precision (RSE < 1 %). Excellent sensitivity was also observed (e.g., 20 ± 0.2 pg m−3 V). The novel use of LA-ICP-MS, together with image mapping, provided a fast and sensitive method for elemental analysis of size-segregated MOUDI filters, particularly for submicron particles.

The 21st century manufacturing technology is unimagined without the various CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) toolpath generation programs. The aims of developing the toolpath strategies which are offered by the cutting control software is to ensure the longest possible tool lifetime and high efficiency of the cutting method. In this paper, the goal is to compare the efficiency of the 3 types of tool path strategies in the very special field of micro-milling of ceramic materials. The dimensional distortion of the manufactured geometries served to draw the Taylor curve for describing the wearing progress of the cutting tool helping to determine the worn-in, normal and wear out stages. These isolations allow to separate the connected high-frequency vibration measurements as well. Applying the novel feature selection technique of the authors, the basis for the vibration based micro-milling tool condition monitoring for ceramics cutting is presented for different toolpath strategies. It resulted in the identification of the most relevant vibration signal features and the presentation of the identified and automatically separated tool wearing stages as well.
