Gas injection is one of the prospective methods in the development of unconventional oil reserves. Before implementation in the field, it is necessary to justify the effectiveness of using gas agents in specific object conditions. Experiments of oil displacement on physical models with subsequent numerical modeling can provide the information necessary to justify the feasibility of using gas injection in specific reservoir conditions. This work is devoted to a series of experiments determining the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) on a slim tube model and the analysis of oil displacement dynamics for various gas compositions, as well as numerical modeling. Displacement experiments were carried out using a recombined oil sample from one of the fields in Western Siberia. The MMP was determined by the classical method of inflection point on the displacement efficiency versus injection pressure curve, which was 34.6 MPa for associated petroleum gas (APG) and 49.9 MPa for methane. The dysnamics of oil displacement for different gas compositions at the same injection pressure showed that APG and carbon dioxide (CO2) are the most effective in the conditions of the studied field. The influence of the gas composition on the gas breakthrough point was also shown. It is revealed that the change in the concentration of the displacing agent in the outgoing separation gas helps define in more detail the process of displacement and the processes implemented in this case for various displacing gas agents. Similarly, it is shown that the displacing efficiency of a gas agent in a miscibility injection mode is affected by the configuration of wells when it is necessary to achieve MMP in reservoir conditions. For the immiscible gas injection mode, no influence of the well configuration was observed.

In laboratory, the minimum miscible pressure (MMP) of oil and CO2 was studied by using a slim tube model. The results showed that the greater the gas injection pressure, the higher the cumulative recovery. The gas breakthrough when the gas was injected with a volume of 0.7~0.8PV, the trend of cumulative recovery increase slowed down and the produced gas-oil ratio increased dramatically. Core flooding experiments were carried to compare the effects of CO2 and water flooding. As a result, the ultimate oil recovery of CO2 flooding increased with the increase of gas injection pressure. If the gas flooding was miscible, the ultimate recovery of CO2 flooding was generally higher than that of water flooding.

While there are a wide range of design recommendations for using rock vanes and bendway weirs as streambank protection measures, no comprehensive, standard approach is currently available for design engineers to evaluate their hydraulic performance before construction. This study investigates using 2D numerical modeling as an option for predicting the hydraulic performance of rock vane and bendway weir structure designs for streambank protection. We used the Sedimentation and River Hydraulics (SRH)-2D depth-averaged numerical model to simulate flows around rock vane and bendway weir installations that were previously examined as part of a physical model study and that had water surface elevation and velocity observations. Overall, SRH-2D predicted the same general flow patterns as the physical model, but over- and underpredicted the flow velocity in some areas. These over- and underpredictions could be primarily attributed to the assumption of negligible vertical velocities. Nonetheless, the point differences between the predicted and observed velocities generally ranged from 15 to 25%, with some exceptions. The results showed that 2D numerical models could provide adequate insight into the hydraulic performance of rock vanes and bendway weirs. Accordingly, design guidance and implications of the study results are presented for design engineers.

Enhanced oil recovery in mature fields can be implemented using chemical flooding with the addition of surfactants using surfactant-polymer (SP) or alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding. Chemical flooding design is implemented taking into account reservoir conditions and composition of reservoir fluids. The surfactant in the oil-displacing formulation allows changing the rock wettability, reducing the interfacial tension, increasing the capillary number, and forming an oil emulsion, which provides a significant increase in the efficiency of oil displacement. The article is devoted with a comprehensive study of the formed emulsion phase as a stage of laboratory selection of surfactant for SP or ASP composition. In this work, the influence of aqueous phase salinity level and the surfactant concentration in the displacing solution on the characteristics of the resulting emulsion was studied. It was shown that, according to the characteristics of the emulsion, it is possible to determine the area of optimal salinity and the range of surfactant concentrations that provide increased oil displacement. The data received show the possibility of predicting the area of effectiveness of ASP and SP formulations based on the characteristics of the resulting emulsion.

Microbial enhanced oil recovery is considered to be one of the most promising methods of stimulating formation, contributing to a higher level of oil production from long-term fields. The injection of bioreagents into a reservoir results in the creation of oil-displacing agents along with a significant amount of gases, mainly carbon dioxide. Earlier, the authors failed to study the preparation of self-gasified biosystems and the implementation of the subcritical region (SR) under reservoir conditions. Gasified systems in the subcritical phase have better oil-displacing properties than nongasified systems. In a heterogeneous porous medium, the filtration profile of gasified liquids in the SR should be more uniform than for a degassed liquid. Based on experimental studies, the superior efficiency of oil displacement by gasified biosystems compared with degassed ones has been demonstrated. The possibility of efficient use of gasified hybrid biopolymer systems has been shown.

As an option for enhancing oil recovery of a high-viscosity Permo-Carboniferous reservoir associated with the Usinskoye field, the use of technology based on technogenic carbon dioxide as an injection agent is considered. In the world practice, several fields are known as close in their parameters to the parameters of the Permo-Carboniferous reservoir, and in which CO2 injection was accepted as successful. Based on this, CO2 injection can potentially be applicable in the conditions of a Permo-Carboniferous reservoir. At present, as a result of the various development technologies implementation, reservoir zones are distinguished, characterized by different thermobaric properties. Depending on reservoir conditions, when displacing oil with gases, various modes of oil displacement can be realized. This article describes the results of studies carried out to study the effect of the concentration of carbon dioxide on the properties of high-viscosity oil in the Permo-Carboniferous Reservoir of the Usinskoye field, as well as the results of filtration experiments on slim models performed to assess the oil displacement regime under various temperature and pressure conditions of the Permo-Carboniferous Reservoir. The study of the influence of CO2 concentration on oil properties was carried out using the standard PVT research technique. The displacement mode was assessed using the slim-tube technique. Based on the performed experiments, it was established that an increase in the concentration of CO2 in high-viscosity oil led to a noticeable change in its properties; for the conditions of a Permo-Carboniferous Reservoir, the most probable mode of oil displacement by carbon dioxide was established. Difficulties associated with the preparation of the CO2-heavy oil system were described separately. Based on a literature review, it was shown that the rate of mixing of oil with carbon dioxide depended on certain conditions.

Diesel/natural gas dual fuel engine is acquiring more and more attention due to its potential to reduce NOX and soot emission simultaneously. Micro-pilot-induced diesel ignition natural gas engine is a popular manner to further improve the emission reduction capability of dual fuel engine. A six cylinder, four stroke, commonrail diesel engine is converted into dual fuel engine. Natural gas is injected into the intake manifold after the throttle. Five gas injection valves are used to control natural gas flow rate. Based to the established fuel supply system, a dual fuel control system is developed by using MS9S12XEP100 MCU. Voltage boosting circuit, fuel injector driving circuit, gas injection valve driving circuit and MeUn driving circuit are integrated on the platform of MCU hardware. Two ECU is connected to each other by CAN bus and several I/O ports to fulfil the fuel injection functional requirement. A software framework involves gas injection timing synchronization, fuel mode managing, multi-time injection. A MAP based fresh air mass flow rate and intake charge efficiency model is integrated in the MCU to calculate the fresh air quality in cylinder. The last part is performance optimization research at low load. Ignition diesel is divided into two stages, and the first injection timing, first injection ratio and injection pressure are used as controllable parameter to reduce NOX and HC emission. Experimental result reveal that by dividing ignition injection into two stage and advancing first injection to 60°CA BTDC CH4 emission can be reduced by 77% while NOX remains unchanged. Increasing the first injection ratio and injection pressure can also reduce THC emission. If injection pressure is higher than 75MPa, the effect of HC reduction effect is not that obvious. Experimental results shows that developed control system can accomplish the functional requirements of dual fuel engine management. Emission test results demonstrate that IMO TierII can be satisfied at diesel mode. DF mode emission performance can meet the requirement of IMO TierIII. Furthermore, as the first domestic product dual fuel dedicated control system, which has passed through the CCS authentication in China, the engine emission level can meet the current and upcoming China’s emission standard on non-road engine on the premise of guaranteeing engine power and economy.

Shoreline protection remains a global priority. Typically, coastal areas are protected by armoring them with hard, non-native, and non-sustainable materials such as limestone. To increase the execution speed and environmental friendliness and reduce the weight of individual concrete blocks and reinforcements, concrete blocks can be designed and implemented as Articulated Concrete Block Mattress (ACB Mat). These structures act as an integral part and can be used as a revetment on the breakwater body or shoreline protection. Physical models are one of the key tools for estimating and investigating the phenomena in coastal structures. However, it does have limitations and obstacles; consequently, in this study, numerical modeling of waves on these structures has been utilized to simulate wave propagation on the breakwater, via Flow-3D software with VOF. Among the factors affecting the instability of ACB Mat are breaking waves as well as the shaking of the revetment and the displacement of the armor due to the uplift force resulting from the failure. The most important purpose of the present study is to investigate the ability of numerical Flow-3D model to simulate hydrodynamic parameters in coastal revetment. The run-up values of the waves on the concrete block armoring will multiply with increasing break parameter (0.5<ξm−1,0<3.3) due to the existence of plunging waves until it (Ru2%Hm0=1.6) reaches maximum. Hence, by increasing the breaker parameter and changing breaking waves (ξm−1,0>3.3) type to collapsing waves/surging waves, the trend of relative wave run-up changes on concrete block revetment increases gradually. By increasing the breaker index (surf similarity parameter) in the case of plunging waves (0.5<ξm−1,0<3.3), the low values on the relative wave run-down are greatly reduced. Additionally, in the transition region, the change of breaking waves from plunging waves to collapsing/surging (3.3<ξm−1,0<5.0), the relative run-down process occurs with less intensity.
