Secondary aluminum dross is a byproduct of the electrolytic aluminum industry, whose main components are Al2O3, AlN and Na3AlF6. Secondary aluminum dross is a type of hazardous waste, with a tremendous yield every year. Realizing the harmless treatment or resource utilization of secondary aluminum dross has important economic and social benefits. In the present research, the process of preparing premelted calcium aluminate slag used for molten steel refining from secondary aluminum dross was studied in detail. Firstly, the chemical composition and phase component of secondary aluminum dross were analyzed systematically. Then, according to phase diagram analysis and melting point measurement, the appropriate mixing ratio of CaO and secondary aluminum dross and the appropriate calcination temperature were determined. On this basis, an experiment of premelted calcium aluminate slag preparation was carried out in a tubular resistance furnace. The phase component and micromorphology of the premelted slag were analyzed by XRD and SEM. The results show that the main component of the premelted calcium aluminate slag is 11CaO·7Al2O3·CaF2 phase with a low melting point. The original Na3AlF6 phase, which is the cause of leachable fluoride in secondary aluminum dross, disappears totally, and there is no water-soluble fluoride detected in the leaching toxicity detection. The research indicates that the process of preparing premelted calcium slag from secondary aluminum dross is feasible, which provides a helpful reference for the resource utilization of secondary aluminum dross.

Fresh fruit bunches (FFB) consist of fruit be composed grade in few spikelet. Fruit at a spikelet can be distinguished into performed fruit namely internal fruit, middle fruit and outer fruit as soon as each section contain parthenocarpy fruits. This research was conducted for determine composition and content fatty acid of oil at internal fruit, middle, outer and parthenocarpy fruit from oil palm fruit. Samples of fruit came from 3 – 5 spikelet the central of FFB. Result showed that oil content of outer fruit (46.9 + 9.9)% trend higher be compared middle fruit (42.8 + 10.3)% and internal fruit (39.1 + 9.5)%. Parthenocarpy fruits have a low oil content (14.2 + 16.2)% except yellowish fruit trend high relatively oil content. The main components of fatty acid at outer fruit, middle and internal are palmitic acid, oleic, linoleic and stearic with mean value respectively (44.8 – 45.8)%, (37.6 – 38.0)%, (9.9 – 10.9)% and (4.6 – 4.8)%. Oil content at parthenocarpy fruit have amount main component of fatty acid with performed fruit but composition of palmitic acid (40.0 + 5.9)% and oleic (34.6 + 8.4)% lower while linoleic acid (16.9 + 8.5)% and linolenic (1.6 + 1.8)% higher be compared to performed fruit. Simalungun variety has the highest oil content in the part of fruit, with that PPKS 540 and La Mé respectively. PPKS 540 variety has the highest oleic acid content while PPKS 718 has the highest linoleic content.

Nutrients released from sediments have a significant influence on the water quality in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs. To clarify the internal nutrient load and provide reference for eutrophication control in Yuqiao Reservoir, a drinking water source reservoir in China, pore water profiles and sediment core incubation experiments were conducted. The nutrients in the water (soluble reactive P (SRP), nitrate-N (NO3−-N), nitrite-N (NO2−-N), and ammonium-N (NH4+-N)) and in the sediments (total N (TN), total P (TP) and total organic carbon (TOC)) were quantified. The results show that NH4+-N was the main component of inorganic N in the pore water. NH4+-N and SRP were higher in the pore water than in the overlying water, and the concentration gradient indicated a diffusion potential from the sediment to the overlying water. The NH4+-N, NO3−-N, and SRP fluxes showed significant differences amongst the seasons. The NH4+-N and SRP fluxes were significantly higher in the summer than in other seasons, while NO3−-N was higher in the autumn. The sediment generally acted as a source of NH4+-N and SRP and as a sink for NO3−-N and NO2−-N. The sediments release 1133.15 and 92.46 tons of N and P, respectively, to the overlying water each year.

Essential oils of aromatic plants represent an alternative to classical pest control with synthetic chemicals. They are especially promising for the alternative control of stored product pest insects. Here, we tested behavioral and electrophysiological responses of the stored product pest Tribolium confusum, to the essential oil of a Brazilian indigenous plant, Varronia globosa, collected in the Caatinga ecosystem. We analyzed the essential oil by GC-MS, tested the effects of the entire oil and its major components on the behavior of individual beetles in a four-way olfactometer, and investigated responses to these stimuli in electroantennogram recordings (EAG). We could identify 25 constituents in the essential oil of V. globosa, with anethole, caryophyllene and spathulenole as main components. The oil and its main component anethole had repellent effects already at low doses, whereas caryophyllene had only a repellent effect at a high dose. In addition, the essential oil abolished the attractive effect of the T. confusum aggregation pheromone. EAG recordings revealed dose-dependent responses to the individual components and increasing responses to the blend and even more to the entire oil. Our study reveals the potential of anethole and the essential oil of V. globosa in the management of stored product pests.

To provide a scientific basis for the resource utilization of chromium slag, this article studies the release law of hexavalent chromium in the aged calcium-free chromium slag. XRD (X-ray diffractometer) and MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyzer) were used to analyze the composition of the chromium slag; using sulfuric acid-nitric acid as the leaching solution, the release law of hexavalent chromium in chromium slag and the leaching kinetics were studied. The results show that main components of the chromium slag are magnesioferrite, chromite, hematite, hydrargillite, and spinel; chromium is mainly present in chromite and magnesioferrite; the leaching rate of hexavalent chromium increases with the increase of temperature or the decrease of pH. The analysis of leaching kinetics shows the leaching rate is controlled by the internal diffusion reaction, and the apparent activation energy is 11.93 kJ·mol–1. The chromium slag is aged in high temperature seasons, which is conducive to the precipitation of hexavalent chromium in the chromium slag, can increase the yield of chromate in the roasting kiln, and is conducive to resource utilization; chromium slag should be stored in order to prevent acid rain erosion which leads to environmental pollution risk (e.g. drinking water).

AbstractAn efficient separation technology for hydrolysates towards a full valorization of bamboo is still a tough challenge, especially regarding the lignin and lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs). The present study aimed to develop a facile approach using organic solvent extraction for efficiently fractionating the main components of bamboo hydrolysates. The high-purity lignin with only a trace of carbohydrates was first obtained by precipitation of the bamboo hydrolysate. The water-soluble lignin (WSL) fraction was extracted in organic solvent through a three-stage organic solvent extraction process, and the hemicellulosic sugars with increased purity were also collected. Furthermore, a thorough characterization including various NMR techniques (31P, 13C, and 2D-HSQC), GPC, and GC-MS was conducted to the obtained lignin-rich-fractions. It was found that the WSL fraction contained abundant functional groups and tremendous amount of LCC structures. As compared to native LCC of bamboo, the WSL fraction exhibited more typical LCC linkages, i.e. phenyl glycoside linkage, which is the main type of chemical linkage between lignin and carbohydrate in both LCC samples. The results demonstrate that organic phase extraction is a highly efficient protocol for the fractionation of hydrolysate and the isolation of LCC-rich streams possessing great potential applications.

Using petroleum ether to extract the fermentative fluid (bio-slurry), then to get the inhibition mechanism of it, and infer which is the main component in inhibition mechanism of biogas. The conclusion found by the experiment is that fat soluble substance is better than water soluble substance in inhibition mechanism, and fat soluble substance is close to 75% biogas fermentation fluid, while water soluble substance is worst. That is to say, the main subject in inhibition mechanism is hided in the fat soluble substance.

Khapli wheat leaves contain a very small quantity of a trihydroxydimethoxyflavone, tricin. Marquis yields a trace of the same compound. These two varieties also contain water-soluble coloring matters which are apparently glucosides of tricin or of a closely related compound. Dyeing tests carried out with six other wheat varieties indicate that all contain essentially the same coloring matters.Methylation of tricin and hydrolysis of the resulting O-trimethyltricin yielded 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxyacetophenone. It was therefore assumed that tricetin, the pentahydroxyflavone derived from tricin, was 5,7,3′,4′,5′-pentahydroxyflavone. This was synthesized from 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid and phloracetophenone by the Allan-Robinson method. Mixed melting-point determinations showed that its O-pentamethyl and O-penta-acetyl derivatives are identical with the corresponding derivatives of tricetin. The dyeing properties and color reactions of synthetic and natural tricetin are identical and are in fair agreement with those described by Badhwar, Kang and Ventkataraman (3, p. 1111) who recently reported the synthesis of the same compound.


DUST-BORNE TRACE GASES AND ODORANTS The analysis of dust-borne trace gases requires their i-solation from the dust particles. Procedures for the isolation and characterization of trace gases and odorants in the dust from pig houses are given by SCHAEFER et al. (29), HAMMOND et al.(30) and TRAVIS and ELLIOTT (31). Alcoholic solvents were found to be effective for the extraction of volatile fatty ac­ ids and phenols from the dust of hen (32) and pig houses (33), (34). Today, gas chromatography is usually used for the sepa­ ration and identification of the trace gases. Table IV gives a literature review of compounds identified in the dust of pig houses. There are only very few reports on investigations on the dust from hen houses (32). Most of the odours coming from livestock production units are associated with the biological degradation of the animal wastes (35), the feed and the body odour of the animals (1). Volatile fatty acids and phenolic compounds were found to con­ tribute mostly to the strong, typical odour of animal houses by the help of sensory evaluations parallel to the chemical analysis (29),(30). Table V gives quantitative values of volatile fatty acids and phenolic/indolic compounds found in the aerosol phase and in settled dust of piggeries, respectively. The results from the aerosol phase coincide, particularly as far as acetic acid is concerned. For the investigations of the settled dust the coefficients of variation (CV) and the relative values (%) characterizing the percentage of the single compounds as part of the total amount are quoted. The values are corrected with the dry matter content of the dust. Main components are acetic acid and p-cresol, respectively. Table VI compares results from air, dust and slurry in­ vestigations on VFA and phenolic/indolic compounds in piggeries. Relative values are used. When comparing the results derived from investigations on dust, air or slurry it is necessary to use relative values because of the different dimensions, for experience shows that in spite of large quantitative differ­ ences between two samples within the group of carboxylic acids and within the group of phenolic/indolic compounds the propor­ tions of the components remain rather stable (36). In the group of VFA acetic acid is the main component in air, dust, and slurry followed by propionic and butyric acid. The other three acids amount to less than 25%. In the group of phenols/ indoles p-cresol is the main component in the four cited in­ vestigations. However, it seems that straw bedding can reduce the p-cresol content; in this case phenol is the main compo­ nent , i nstead (37 ). 4. EMISSION OF DUST-BORNE VFA AND PHENOLS/INDOLES FROM PIGGERIES The investigations of dust from piggeries show that both VFA and phenols/indoles are present in a considerable amount. However, compared to the air-borne emissions calculated on the base of the results of LOGTENBERG and STORK (38) less than the tenth part (1/10) of phenols/indoles and about the hundredth part (1/100) of VFA are emitted by the dust, only.
