The novelty of this paper, in relation to other thematically similar research papers, is the comparison of the failure phenomenon on two composite profiles with different cross-sections, using known experimental techniques and advanced numerical models of composite material failure. This paper presents an analysis of the failure of thin-walled structures made of composite materials with top-hat and channel cross-sections. Both experimental investigations and numerical simulations using the finite element method (FEM) are applied in this paper. Tests were conducted on thin-walled short columns manufactured of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) material. The experimental specimens were made using the autoclave technique and thus showed very good strength properties, low porosity and high surface smoothness. Tests were carried out in axial compression of composite profiles over the full range of loading—up to total failure. During the experimental study, the post-buckling equilibrium paths were registered, with the simultaneous use of a Zwick Z100 universal testing machine (UTM) and equipment for measuring acoustic emission signals. Numerical simulations used composite material damage models such as progressive failure analysis (PFA) and cohesive zone model (CZM). The analysis of the behavior of thin-walled structures subjected to axial compression allowed the evaluation of stability with an in-depth assessment of the failure of the composite material. A significant effect of the research was, among others, determination of the phenomenon of damage initiation, delamination and loss of load-carrying capacity. The obtained results show the high qualitative and quantitative agreement of the failure phenomenon. The dominant form of failure occurred at the end sections of the composite columns. The delamination phenomenon was observed mainly on the outer flanges of the structure.

In this study, the energy absorption capacity and crush strength of cylindrical thin-walled structures is investigated using nonlinear Finite Elements code LS-DYNA. For the thin-walled structure, Aluminum A6063 is used and its behaviour is modeled using power-law equation. In order to better investigate the performance of tubes, the simulation was also carried out on structures with other types of cross-sections such as triangle, square, rectangle, and hexagonal, and their results, namely, energy absorption, crush strength, peak load, and the displacement at the end of tubes was compared to each other. It was seen that the circular cross-section has the highest energy absorption capacity and crush strength, while they are the lowest for the triangular cross-section. It was concluded that increasing the number of sides increases the energy absorption capacity and the crush strength. On the other hand, by comparing the results between the square and rectangular cross-sections, it can be found out that eliminating the symmetry of the cross-section decreases the energy absorption capacity and the crush strength. The crush behaviour of the structure was also studied by changing the mass and the velocity of the striker, simultaneously while its total kinetic energy is kept constant. It was seen that the energy absorption of the structure is more sensitive to the striker velocity than its mass.

In this experimental work, strength results obtained on short columns subjected to concentric loads are presented. The specimens used in the tests have made of cold-rolled, thin-walled steel. Twenty short columns of the same cross-section area and wall thickness have been tested as follows: 8 empty and 12 filled with ordinary concrete. In the aim to determine the column section geometry with the highest resistance, three different types of cross-sections have been compared: rectangular, I-shaped unreinforced and, reinforced with 100 mm spaced transversal links. The parameters studied are the specimen height and the cross-sectional steel geometry. The registered experimental results have been compared to the ultimate loads intended by Eurocode 3 for empty columns and by Eurocode 4 for compound columns. These results showed that a concrete-filled composite column had improved strength compared to the empty case. Among the three cross-section types, it has been found that I-section reinforced is the most resistant than the other two sections. Moreover, the load capacity and mode of failure have been influenced by the height of the column. Also, it had noted that the experimental strengths of the tested columns don’t agree well with the EC3 and EC4 results.

Abstract The modelling and vibration of composite thin-walled pre-twisted rotating blades of non-uniform cross-sections along their span, and featuring the extension-twist elastic coupling are addressed. To this end, Hamilton’s principle is used to derive the equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions. In addition to the pretwist and warping restraint, the exotic properties of advanced composite material are used, and the efficiency of implementing the tailoring technique toward the enhancement, without weight penalties, of the vibratory behaviour of rotating blades is illustrated. Comparisons between the predictions by both Wagner’s and Washizu’s approaches are presented, and pertinent conclusions regarding the implications of the various geometrical and physical characteristics of the blade are outlined.

The present paper investigates the crashing behavior and energy absorption characteristics of thin-walled (tubular) structures with different cross-sections made from tailor welded blanks (TWB) which were subject of axial quasistatic loadings. Resulted data were obtained by using explicit nonlinear finite element code LS_Dyna V971. Implementing the TWB into the auto industry was an efficient method to decrease the general weight of different structures. By far, these kind of bimetallic structures are largely utilized in auto and naval industries because it led to important decrease of scarp quantities and general manufacturing costs, improved material use and probably the most important, great fuel efficiency. After reviewing the literature it was concluded that proper combination between mechanical characteristics of sheet metals, different thicknesses and cross-section shapes into the same thin-walled structure is far too little researched and understood. The aims of this study are better understandings of the crashing behavior regarding thin-walled structure with various cross-sections made from TWB blanks subject to quasistatic loadings. The non-linear finite element platform LS_Dyna V971 was used for the numerical analysis of the crushing behavior regarding the thin-walled structures. Having two materials constituting the thin-walled structures, the crashing behavior changed during the quasistatic loading. Thus, the crashing inertia of the structure is somehow limited and controlled. It is noted that material ratio should not be randomly chosen due to the unexpected crashing mode which could aggravate the prediction and control of the crashing behavior of the thin-walled structure.

Based on the characteristics of the special-shaped concrete-filled steel tubes and consideration of material nonlinearity of constitutive relation, stimulation of 6 T-shaped thin-walled ribbed and un-ribbed concrete-filled steel tube short columns is implemented, as well as comparable analysis of stress, strain, displacement and bearing capacity, through the finite element analysis software ANSYS. The result indicates that the rib can effectively improve the ductility, delaying the buckling occurs, which enhances the core concrete confinement effect, so as the stimulated ultimate bearing capacity which is greater than nominal ultimate bearing capacity.

A new stress-state dependent cohesive zone model for thin walled structures is proposed. The model incorporates the stress-state explicitly within the traction-separation law using basic elasticity-plasticity equations combined with a model parameter. The numerical implementation of the model is able to reproduce ductile fracture observed in a pre-cracked C(T) specimen as well as a notched plate specimen of the same material.

Abstract Thin-walled steel elements in the form of openwork columns with variable geometrical parameters of holes were studied. The samples of thin-walled composite columns were modelled numerically. They were subjected to axial compression to examine their behavior in the critical and post-critical state. The numerical models were articulately supported on the upper and lower edges of the cross-section of the profiles. The numerical analysis was conducted only with respect to the non-linear stability of the structure. The FEM analysis was performed until the material achieved its yield stress. This was done to force the loss of stability by the structures. The numerical analysis was performed using the ABAQUS® software. The numerical analysis was performed only for the elastic range to ensure the operating stability of the tested thin-walled structures.
