Due to the large surface-area-to-volume ratio, microchannel heat exchangers have a higher heat transfer rate compared with traditional scale heat exchangers. In this study, the optimum microchannel cavity with high heat transfer and low flow resistance is designed to further improve microchannel exchangers’ thermal performance. A three-dimensional laminar flow model, consisting of Navier–Stokes equations and an energy conservation equation is solved and the conjugate heat transfer between the silicon basement and deionized water is taken into consideration. The impact of the shape, aspect ratio, size and spacing of the cavity on the thermal performance of microchannel exchangers are numerically investigated, respectively. The results indicated that the cavity on the sidewall can enhance heat transfer and reduce flow resistance simultaneously, and cavities with a relatively small expansion angle and streamlined edge could enhance thermal performance the most. Based on the conclusions, a new cavity shape is proposed, and the simulation results verify its excellent thermal performance as expected. Furthermore, investigation is performed to figure out the optimum design of the new cavity and the optimal geometric parameters of the cavity under different flow conditions have been obtained in principle for microchannel exchangers’ design.

AbstractAnalysis of the state of-the-art in research of refrigerant condensation in miniature heat exchangers, so-called multiports, was made. Results of refrigerant R407C condensation in a mini condenser made in the form of two bundles of tubular minichannels from stainless steel with an inside diameter 0.64 mm and length 100 mm have been presented. Two exchangers consisted of four minichannels and 8 minichannels have been investigated. The values of average heat transfer coefficient and frictional pressure drops throughout the condensation process were designated. The impact of the vapor quality of refrigerant and the mass flux density on the intensity of heat transfer and flow resistance were illustrated. A comparative analysis of test results for various refrigerants in both mini heat exchangers were made.

The application of microchannel heat exchangers is of great significance in industrial fields due to their advantages of miniaturized scale, large surface-area-to-volume ratio, and high heat transfer rate. In this study, microchannel heat exchangers with and without fan-shaped reentrant cavities were designed and manufactured, and experiments were conducted to investigate the flow and heat-transfer characteristics. The impact rising from the radius of reentrant cavities, as well as the Reynolds number on the heat transfer and the pressure drop, is also analyzed. The results indicate that, compared with straight microchannels, microchannels with reentrant cavities could enhance the heat transfer and, more importantly, reduce the pressure drop at the same time. For the ranges of parameters studied, increasing the radius of reentrant cavities could augment the effect of pressure-drop reduction, while the corresponding variation of heat transfer is complicated. It is considered that adding reentrant cavities in microchannel heat exchangers is an ideal approach to improve performance.

The numerical simulation was carried out to investigate mechanism of the heat transfer enhancement in the fin-and-tube heat exchangers. As known, the vortex generators (VGs) were widely used to improve the thermal performance with bad flow resistance characteristics and led to bad comprehensive performance. This paper aims to expound the mechanism of thermal hydraulic characteristics and explore the effect of VGs position on the comprehensive performance. Three types of fins (type 1, type 2, and type 3) were discussed in this paper. The j factor, f factor, and performance evaluation (PEC) of three types of VGs in different positions were discussed and compared. Based on the numerical results, a detailed description of the effect of three types of VGs on the heat transfer performance and flow resistance characteristics was presented at different Reynolds number in the range between 1300 and 2000. In addition, local velocity distribution, local temperature distribution, and local pressure drop distribution were analyzed and discussed. And the effect of VG angle on the thermal performance and flow resistance was presented. It can be concluded that the main heat transfer occurred in the region before the tube, and the wake region behind the tube was harmful to improve the thermal performance and reduce the flow resistance. Besides, VG in the wake region was obviously beneficial to the enhancement of the thermal performance with less energy loss.

Abstract Impact cooling is an effective way to enhance heat transfer, especially in the gas turbine blades. In the leading edge of the blade where has the high heat load, jet impingement cooling is widely used due to its high heat transfer characteristic in stagnation region. The focus is on finding a cooling structure that can improve the heat transfer effect of the internal impact structure at the leading edge without increasing the internal flow resistance. In this paper, using transient liquid crystal experiments researches for the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a semi-circular structure, which is simplified from the real blade leading edge ’s inside surface and have different rib structures. This paper studies five cases:no rib, round-shaped raised structure, oblique rib, round-shaped raised structure and oblique rib and span-wise rib and arc rib to find their heat transfer and flow characteristics. Some rib-shaped protrusion has three heights, which are 30%, 50%, 70% of the impact distance H. Experimental conditions of Reynolds number are Re = 10000, 15000, 20000, 25000, 30000. The experimental verification results show that the internally strengthened heat transfer structures studied in this paper can improve the heat transfer effect of the leading edge array of the turbine blade impact target surface without increasing the flow resistance. The structure with both oblique ribs and round-shaped raised structures has the highest surface average Nusselt number of the target plate and the lowest discharge coefficient of the channel. The structure with both span-wise ribs and arc ribs has a staggered high heat transfer area distribution, which can maybe use in some special cases.

The current study experimentally investigates the heat transfer augmentation on the novel axial corrugated heat exchanger tube in which the spring tape is introduced. Air (Pr = 0.707) is used as a working fluid. In order to augment the thermohydraulic performance, a corrugated tube with inserts is offered. The experimental study is further extended by varying the important parameters like spring ratio (y = 1.5, 2.0, 2.5) and Reynolds number (Re = 10 000–52 000). The angular pitch between the two neighboring corrugations and the angle of the corrugation is kept constant through the experiments at β = 1200 and α = 600 respectively, while two different corrugations heights (h) are analyzed. While increasing the corrugation height and decreasing the spring ratio, the impact of the swirling effect improves the thermal performance of the system. The maximum thermal performance is obtained when the corrugation height is h = 0.2 and spring ratio y = 1.5. Eventually, correlations for predicting friction factor (f) and Nusselt number (Nu) are developed.

Micro heat exchangers have been revealed to be efficient devices for improved heat transfer due to short heat transfer distances and increased surface-to-volume ratios. Further augmentation of the heat transfer behaviour within microstructured devices can be achieved with heat transfer enhancement techniques, and more precisely for this study, with passive enhancement techniques. Pin fin geometries influence the flow path and, therefore, were chosen as the option for further improvement of the heat transfer performance. The augmentation of heat transfer with micro heat exchangers was performed with the consideration of an improved heat transfer behaviour, and with additional pressure losses due to the change of flow path (pin fin geometries). To capture the impact of the heat transfer, as well as the impact of additional pressure losses, an assessment method should be considered. The overall exergy loss method can be applied to micro heat exchangers, and serves as a simple assessment for characterization. Experimental investigations with micro heat exchanger structures were performed to evaluate the assessment method and its importance. The heat transfer enhancement was experimentally investigated with microstructured pin fin geometries to understand the impact on pressure loss behaviour with air.

Heat transfer enhancement, pumping power and weight minimization in enhanced heat exchangers has long been achieved by deploying tubes with internal surface modifications like microgrooves, ribs, fins, knurls, and dimples with and without tube inserts. This article presents a very extensive review of experimental and computational studies on heat transfer enhancement, which covers convectional and unconventional working fluids under different fluid flow conditions. Compound augmentation with tube surface modifications and inserts has yielded enhancements in the overall heat transfer coefficient of over 116% in the fully developed turbulent flow regime. Exotic fluids like nano-coolants deployed in spiral grooved mircofin tubes yielded 196% enhancement in tube side heat transfer rate for concentrations as low as 0.5% by volume, while the thermal efficiency index measuring the overall enhancement in relation to the pumping power was 75%. However, reviews that address the combined effect of unconventional fluids, surface modifications and tube inserts on the overall thermo-hydraulic performance of annular heat exchangers seem to be limited. Further, nano-coolants aren’t frequently used in the process industry. The goal of this study is to document and evaluate the impact of cost-effective and energy-saving passive enhancement techniques such as tube surface modifications, tube inserts, and annular enhancement techniques on annular heat exchangers used in the process industries with Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. This review should be useful to engineers, academics and medical professionals working with non-Newtonian fluids and enhanced heat exchangers.

The features of ferromagnetic fluids make it supportive for an extensive usage in loudspeakers, magnetic resonance imaging, computer hard drives, directing of magnetic drug and magnetic hyperthermia. Owing to all such potential applications, the current investigation is to understand the relationship between the thermal distribution, magnetic field and resulting fluid flow of Maxwell liquid over a stretching sheet. Investigation of thermal energy and concentration is carried out in the presence of thermal radiation, non-uniform heat sink/source, chemical reaction, Stefan blowing, magnetic dipole, thermophoresis and Brownian motion. Also, microorganisms are considered just to stabilize the suspended nanoparticles. Boundary layer approximation is employed during mathematical derivation. Based on a new constitutive relation, the governing equations are formulated and are reduced into a coupled non-linear system of equations using appropriate transformations. Further, these equations are solved numerically using fourth-order Runge–Kutta method with shooting technique. The impact of involved parameters is discussed and analysed graphically. Outcomes disclose that Newtonian liquid shows high heat transfer when compared to non-Newtonian (Maxwell) liquid for increased values of Brownian motion and thermophoresis parameters. Increased values of Peclet number declines the rate of gyrotactic microorganisms. Finally, an increase in Brownian and thermophoresis motion parameters declines the rate of heat transfer.

Abstract The shell and coil heat exchangers are commonly used in heating, ventilation, nuclear industry, process plant, heat recovery and air conditioning systems. This type of recuperators benefits from simple construction, the low value of pressure drops and high heat transfer. In helical coil, centrifugal force is acting on the moving fluid due to the curvature of the tube results in the development. It has been long recognized that the heat transfer in the helical tube is much better than in the straight ones because of the occurrence of secondary flow in planes normal to the main flow inside the helical structure. Helical tubes show good performance in heat transfer enhancement, while the uniform curvature of spiral structure is inconvenient in pipe installation in heat exchangers. Authors have presented their own construction of shell and tube heat exchanger with intensified heat transfer. The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of the surface modification over the performance coefficient and effectiveness. The experiments have been performed for the steady-state heat transfer. Experimental data points were gathered for both laminar and turbulent flow, both for co current- and countercurrent flow arrangement. To find optimal heat transfer intensification on the shell-side authors applied the number of transfer units analysis.

The impact of recycled fine aggregate and powder on the mechanics and thermal performance of recycled concrete hollow blocks was discussed in this paper. The results showed that 30% recycled fine aggregate and powder have slight affect on the strength of recycled concrete hollow blocks. But the strength reduced significantly when the replacement is above 50%. The impact of recycled fine aggregate and powder on the performance of concrete hollow blocks with high strength grade is notable . The heat transfer coefficient of recycled concrete hollow blocks with 30% recycled fine aggregate and powder was equivalently to ordinary concrete hollow blocks.
