The use of bioresorbable fracture fixation plates made of aliphatic polyesters have good potential due to good biocompatibility, reduced risk of stress-shielding, and eliminated need for plate removal. However, polyesters are ductile, and their handling properties are limited. We suggested an alternative, PLAMA (PolyLActide functionalized with diMethAcrylate), for the use as the matrix phase for the novel concept of the in situ curable bioresorbable load-bearing composite plate to reduce the limitations of conventional polyesters. The purpose was to obtain a preliminary understanding of the chemical and physical properties and the biological safety of PLAMA from the prospective of the novel concept. Modifications with different molecular masses (PLAMA-500 and PLAMA-1000) were synthesized. The efficiency of curing was assessed by the degree of convergence (DC). The mechanical properties were obtained by tensile test and thermomechanical analysis. The bioresorbability was investigated by immersion in simulated body fluid. The biocompatibility was studied in cell morphology and viability tests. PLAMA-500 showed better DC and mechanical properties, and slower bioresorbability than PLAMA-1000. Both did not prevent proliferation and normal morphological development of cells. We concluded that PLAMA-500 has potential for the use as the matrix material for bioresorbable load-bearing composite fracture fixation plates.

In this work, a novel melt extrusion method under synergy of extensional deformation and in-situ bubble stretching (ISBS) and corresponding apparatus were reported. The structure and working principle were introduced in detail. Polymer composites composed of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/carbon fiber (CF) were prepared by using this new method. Effects of CF and Azodicarbonamide (AC) contents on composites’ morphology, rheological, thermal, and mechanical properties were experimentally investigated. SEM results showed that the CFs dispersed evenly in the matrix when the AC content was relatively high. DSC results showed that co-crystallization of HDPE and UHMWPE occurred in the composites, and the Xc of the composites decreased with the addition of AC or under high CF loadings. TGA results showed that the thermostability of the composites increased markedly with increasing CF loading. Mechanical properties showed that tensile strength increased by 30% with 9 wt % CF and 0.6 wt % AC added. The results aforementioned indicate that the novel melt extrusion method is a green and effective way to prepare HDPE/UHMWPE/CF composites.

Abstract:TiB2/Al composites were prepared by the melt in situ reaction fabrication using Al-3B master alloy and Ti powder as the reactive materials. The phase composition and the microstructure of the as-prepared composites were investigated by XRD, SEM. The results indicate that the reinforcements are TiB2 and a small amount of Al3Ti. TiB2particles are in the shape of irregular polygon or rectangle, and its size is 0.5-2μm. Compared with the matrix material, the ultimate tensile strength, microhardness of as-prapred composites increase by 51%, 68.8%, 85.2%, and 33.4%, 43.8%, 55%, respectively. However, the elongation decrease with the volume fraction of the reinforcements increased.

The in-situ Ti alloying of aluminium alloys was fulfilled by electrolysis, and the material was made into A356 alloy and used in automobile wheels. The results show that the grains of the A356 alloy was refined and the second dendrites arm was shortened due to the in-situ Ti alloying. Trough 3-hour solution treatment and 2-hour aging treatment for the A356 alloy, the microstructures were homogeneous, and Si particles were spheroid and distribute in the matrix fully. The outstanding mechanical properties with tensile strength (σb≥300Mpa) and elongation values (δ≥10%) have been obtained because the heat treatment was optimized. Compared with the traditional materials, tensile strength and elongation were increased by 7.6~14.1% and 7.4~44.3% respectively. The qualities of the automobile wheels were improved remarkably.

Microstructural Analysis plays an important role in enhancing the mechanical properties of metals and composites. Usually Aluminium Silicon Carbide (Al6063/SiC) alloys are mixed with strontium, sodium and antimony for high durability even though they are toxic and costly. As an alternative calcium is used as an alloying element to improve the mechanical property of Al6063/Sic alloy. In this paper Al6063 is chosen as the matrix material while Sic is used as a reinforcement where calcium powder is added to modify the silicon phase of the composite. Finally, concentration of Silicon carbide is varied from 0 to 150 mg to produce four specimens of Al6063 alloy and it is subjected to microstructure analysis which showed the reduction of grain size and therefore improvement in the hardness from 52.9 HV to 58.4 HV and decrease in the wear loss from 3.97 to 3.27 percentage.

The change of matrix and usage of the aluminum alloys designed for the metal forming in making the composite suspension allows to extend the processing possibility of this type of materials. The possibility of the metal forming of the composites obtained by mechanical mixing will extend the range of composite materials usage. Applying of the metal forming e.g. matrix forging, embossing, pressing or rolling, will allow to remove the incoherence of the structure created while casting and removing casting failures. In order to avoid the appearance of the casting failures the homogenization conditions need to be changed. Inserting the particles into the matrix influences on the shortening of the composite solidification. The type of the applied particles influenced the sedimentation process and reinforcement agglomeration in the structure of the composite. Opposite to the composites reinforced with one-phase particles applying the fasess mixture (glassy carbon and silicon carbide) triggered significant limitation in the segregation process while casting solidification. Inserting the particles into the AW-AlCu2SiMn matrix lowers the mechanical properties tension and impact value strength. The most beneficial mechanical properties were gained in case of heterofasess composites reinforced with the particle mixture of SiC and glass carbon. The chemical composition of the matrix material (AW-AlCu2SiMn) allows to increase additionally mechanical characteristics by the precipitation hardening reached through heat casting forming.

ABSTRACTWe have studied the first phases of post-growth evolution of InAs quantum dots (QDs) using in-situ Auger electron spectroscopy in conjunction with Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED). Direct evidence for InAs intermixing with about 6ML (monolayers) of the matrix material is found from Auger signal behavior during MBE overgrowth of InAs nanostructures. Re-establishment of 2D growth mode by overgrowth with GaAs or AlAs was monitored in single-layer and multi-layer QD structures using RHEED. Decay process of InAs QDs on the surface is found to have activation energy of about 1.1 eV that corresponds to In intermixing with the matrix rather than evaporation from the surface.

A Ti-5553 specimen was continuously heated to 923 K and simultaneously in-situ HEXRD profiles were taken. In addition, specimens heated at the same rate to several temperatures up to 923 K and further quenched were observed by transmission electron microscopy. Based on both results obtained, transformation sequence was clarified, precipitations of ω-, α”iso- and α-phases were confirmed, and size and density of these precipitates were measured. Hardness values of those specimens were also measured. The hardening mechanism was considered as shearing-mechanism for specimens aged at lower temperatures and by-pass one for specimens aged at higher temperature. An attempt of distinction between α”iso - and α-precipitates was also tried. Both precipitates were in needle-like shape and a possibility was suggested by measuring angles between two needle-shape precipitates on {110} of the matrix and comparing with each other.

The displacement of relatively rigid beads within a relatively compliant, elastic matrix can be used to measure the mechanical properties of the matrix. For example, in mechanobiological studies, magnetic or reflective beads can be displaced with a known external force to estimate the matrix modulus. Although such beads are generally rigid compared to the matrix, the material surrounding the beads typically differs from the matrix in one or two ways. The first case, as is common in mechanobiological experimentation, is the situation in which the bead must be coated with materials such as protein ligands that enable adhesion to the matrix. These layers typically differ in stiffness relative to the matrix material. The second case, common for uncoated beads, is the situation in which the beads disrupt the structure of the hydrogel or polymer, leading to a region of enhanced or reduced stiffness in the neighborhood of the bead. To address both cases, we developed the first analytical solution of the problem of translation of a coated, rigid spherical inclusion displaced within an isotropic elastic matrix by a remotely applied force. The solution is applicable to cases of arbitrary coating stiffness and size of the coating. We conclude by discussing applications of the solution to mechanobiology.

In-situ micro/nanosized TiB2 and Al2(Y, Gd) particles reinforced magnesium matrix composite was successfully fabricated by addition of Al-Ti-B preform into Mg-Gd-Y-Zn matrix alloy, its microstructures and properties were investigated. The results show that the introduction of Al-Ti-B preform causes the precipitation of Al2(Y, Gd) particles and the SHS synthesis of TiB2 particles which significantly refine solidification structure. The reinforced Al2(Y, Gd) particles with average sizes of 5-8 μm are uniformly distributed throughout the magnesium matrix, and have a good bond to the matrix. Tensile tests indicate that, compared with the former matrix alloy, mechanical properties of the multiple in-situ particles reinforced composite are improved all-roundly.

In situ melt copolycondensation was proposed to prepare biodegradable copolyester nanocomposites based on degradable components poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA), rigid segments poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), and nanoparticles polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). The morphologies and dispersions of two POSS nanoparticles (POSS-NH2 and POSS-PEG) in the copolyester PLABT matrix and their effects on the mechanical properties were investigated. The results demonstrated that the morphologies and dispersions of POSS-NH2 and POSS-PEG showed quite different characteristics. POSS-PEG took better dispersion in the PLABT, while POSS-NH2 had poor dispersions and formed crystalline microaggregates. Due to the good dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion of POSS-PEG with the matrix, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus were greatly improved from 6.4 and 9.6 MPa for neat PLABT up to 11.2 and 70.7 MPa for PLABT/POSS-PEG nanocomposite. Moreover, the incorporation of POSS-PEG could impart macromolecular chains good flexibility and improve the mobility of the chains, so the the elongation at break of PLABT/POSS-PEG nanocomposite dramatically increased from 190 to 350 % compared with neat PLABT.
