Milk has been shown to contain a specific fraction of extracellular particles that are reported to resist digestion and are purposefully packaged with lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids to exert specific biological effects. These findings suggest that these particles may have a role in the quality of infant nutrition, particularly in the early phase of life when many of the foundations of an infant’s potential for health and overall wellness are established. However, much of the current research focuses on human or cow milk only, and there is a knowledge gap in how milk from other species, which may be more commonly consumed in different regions, could also have these reported biological effects. Our review provides a summary of the studies into the extracellular particle fraction of milk from a wider range of ruminants and pseudo-ruminants, focusing on how this fraction is isolated and characterised, the stability and uptake of the fraction, and the reported biological effects of these fractions in a range of model systems. As the individual composition of milk from different species is known to differ, we propose that the extracellular particle fraction of milk from non-traditional and minority species may also have important and distinct biological properties that warrant further study.

37 Background: Esophageal cancer is known for its high potential of early lymphogenous metastases. The biological activity of plasminogen (PG) regulators, VEGFs and their receptors controls the growth and differentiation of cells, including malignant ones, the stability of the extracellular matrix, as well as processes of destruction of membranes and extracellular matrix, invasion of malignant cells, angio- and lymphangiogenesis. Our purpose was to study the role of PG regulators in the activation of VEGFs and their receptors in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) and its perifocal zone (PZ). Methods: Levels of uPA-Ag, uPA-act; tPA-Ag, tPA-act; PAI-1-Ag and PAI-1-act, VEGF-А, VEGF-R1, VEGF-С and VEGF-R3 were determined by ELISA in surgical specimens of EA (n = 28, st II, G2, T2-3N0-1M0). Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Office Excel 2010. Results: Levels of all proteins, except tPA, were higher in tumor (T) tissues than in the resection line (RL, p < 0.01). Protein levels, except uPA-Ag and tPA, in PZ were between levels in T and RL (p < 0.01); uPA-Ag, tPA-Ag and tPA-act were decreased in T and PZ compared with RL (p < 0.01); PAI-1-Ag in T and PZ was higher than in RL by 9.4 and 6.3 times, and PAI-1-act – by 10.7 and 1.9 times. Levels of VEGF-А, VEGF-R1, VEGF-С and VEGF-R3 were increased in T (p < 0.001), and in PZ they were between levels in T and RL (p < 0.001). Strong correlations were registered in EA T between uPA and VEGF-А (r = 86), uPA and VEGF-R1 (r = 81), uPA and VEGF-С (r = 79), uPA and VEGF-R3 (r = 76). A strong correlation between uPA and PAI-1 in T (r = 88) did not exclude PAI-1 biological effects in EA T and its PZ. PZ showed strong correlations between uPA and PAI-1 (r = 87), uPA and VEGF-А (r = 84), uPA and VEGF-С (r = 78). Conclusions: The strong correlations between the activation of uPA, PAI-1, VEGF-А, VEGF-С and their receptors in EA indicate interactions between them, realized both directly and through plasmin. The expression of the studied proteins in T and its PZ, compared to RL, demonstrates the effect of T on the content and activity of uPA, PAI-1, VEGF-A, VEGF-C and their receptors, with the following realization of biological properties that promote the progression of EA.

In the IRT person-fluctuation model, the individual trait levels fluctuate within a single test administration whereas the items have fixed locations. This article studies the relations between the person and item parameters of this model and two central properties of item and test scores: temporal stability and external validity. For temporal stability, formulas are derived for predicting and interpreting item response changes in a test-retest situation on the basis of the individual fluctuations. As for validity, formulas are derived for obtaining disattenuated estimates and for predicting changes in validity in groups with different levels of fluctuation. These latter formulas are related to previous research in the person-fit domain. The results obtained and the relations discussed are illustrated with an empirical example.

Using semiempirical MNDO method of quantum chemistry the optimal geometries and corresponding electronic structures of [Pb3(OH)n]6-n model systems as well as of their hydrated [Pb3(OH)n(H2O)8-n]6-n analogues (n = 4, 5) are investigated. The most stable trinuclear lead(II) complexes present in aqueous solutions correspond to cyclo-(μ3-OH)(μ2-OH)3Pb32+, Pb(μ-OH)2Pb(μ-OH)2Pb2+, cyclo-(μ3-OH)2(μ2-OH)3Pb3+, Pb(OH)(μ-OH)2Pb(μ-OH)Pb(OH)+ and Pb(OH)(μ-OH)2Pb(μ-OH)2Pb+ systems. The key role of OH bridges (by vanishing direct Pb-Pb bonds) on the stability of individual isomers is discussed.

Nω-Hydroxy-L-arginine (NOHA) is a stable intermediate in NO formation from L-arginine catalyzed by NO synthase (NOS). Apparently, NOHA can be released and serve as a stable reserve NO donor (as a substrate of NOS) or transported and exert its own biological effects. It shows endothelium-dependent as well as endothelium-independent vasorelaxant activity. The latter case indicates that NOHA can be metabolized by pathways independent of NOS. These possibilities are discussed in detail. Of the available NOHA homologues homo-NOHA is a good substrate of NOS while nor-NOHA seems to be a very poor substrate of this enzyme. On the contrary, nor-NOHA exerts arginase inhibitory activity 20 times higher than NOHA whereas homo-NOHA is inactive. Detailed investigation of biological activities of NOHA and its homologues seems to be promising from the pharmacological point of view. A review with 43 references.

Heterogeneous molecular catalysts based on transition metal complexes have received increasing attention for their potential application in electrochemical energy conversion. The structural tuning of first and second coordination spheres of complexes provides versatile strategies for optimizing the activities of heterogeneous molecular catalysts and appropriate model systems for investigating the mechanism of structural variations on the activity. In this review, we first discuss the variation of first spheres by tuning ligated atoms; afterward, the structural tuning of second spheres by appending adjacent metal centers, pendant groups, electron withdrawing/donating, and conjugating moieties on the ligands is elaborated. Overall, these structural tuning resulted in different impacts on the geometric and electronic configurations of complexes, and the improved activity is achieved through tuning the stability of chemisorbed reactants and the redox behaviors of immobilized complexes.

Anthocyanins are naturally occurring phytochemicals that have attracted growing interest from consumers and the food industry due to their multiple biological properties and technological applications. Nevertheless, conventional extraction techniques based on thermal technologies can compromise both the recovery and stability of anthocyanins, reducing their global yield and/or limiting their application in food systems. The current review provides an overview of the main innovative processes (e.g., pulsed electric field, microwave, and ultrasound) used to recover anthocyanins from agri-food waste/by-products and the mechanisms involved in anthocyanin extraction and their impacts on the stability of these compounds. Moreover, trends and perspectives of anthocyanins’ applications in food systems, such as antioxidants, natural colorants, preservatives, and active and smart packaging components, are addressed. Challenges behind anthocyanin implementation in food systems are displayed and potential solutions to overcome these drawbacks are proposed.

AbstractIt has been shown that when using a Monte Carlo algorithm to estimate the electrostatic free energy of a biomolecule in a solution, individual random walks can become entrapped in the geometry. We examine a proposed solution, using a sharp restart during the Walk-on-Subdomains step, in more detail. We show that the point at which this solution introduces significant bias is related to properties intrinsic to the molecule being examined. We also examine two potential methods of generating a sharp restart point and show that they both cause no significant bias in the examined molecules and increase the stability of the run times of the individual walks.

A modern trend in traumatology, orthopedics, and implantology is the development of materials and coatings with an amorphous–crystalline structure that exhibits excellent biocopatibility. The structure and physico–chemical and biological properties of calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings deposited on Ti plates using the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method under different voltages (200, 250, and 300 V) were studied. Amorphous, nanocrystalline, and microcrystalline statesof CaHPO4 and β-Ca2P2O7were observed in the coatings using TEM and XRD. The increase in MAO voltage resulted in augmentation of the surface roughness Ra from 2.5 to 6.5 µm, mass from 10 to 25 mg, thickness from 50 to 105 µm, and Ca/P ratio from 0.3 to 0.6. The electrical potential (EP) of the CaP coatings changed from −456 to −535 mV, while the zeta potential (ZP) decreased from −53 to −40 mV following an increase in the values of the MAO voltage. Numerous correlations of physical and chemical indices of CaP coatings were estimated. A decrease in the ZP magnitudes of CaP coatings deposited at 200–250 V was strongly associated with elevated hTERT expression in tumor-derived Jurkat T cells preliminarily activated with anti-CD2/CD3/CD28 antibodies and then contacted in vitro with CaP-coated samples for 14 days. In turn, in vitro survival of CD4+ subsets was enhanced, with proinflammatory cytokine secretion of activated Jurkat T cells. Thus, the applied MAO voltage allowed the regulation of the physicochemical properties of amorphous–crystalline CaP-coatings on Ti substrates to a certain extent. This method may be used as a technological mechanism to trigger the behavior of cells through contact with micro-arc CaP coatings. The possible role of negative ZP and Ca2+ as effectors of the biological effects of amorphous–crystalline CaP coatings is discussed. Micro-arc CaP coatings should be carefully tested to determine their suitability for use in patients with chronic lymphoid malignancies.

Abstract Ample evidence exists that China was caught off guard by the Trump administration's onslaught of punishing acts—the trade war being a prime, but far from the only, example. This article, in addition to contextualizing their earlier optimism about the relations with the United States under President Trump, examines why Chinese leaders and analysts were surprised by the turn of events. It argues that three main factors contributed to the lapse of judgment. First, Chinese officials and analysts grossly misunderstood Donald Trump the individual. By overemphasizing his pragmatism while downplaying his unpredictability, they ended up underprepared for the policies he unleashed. Second, some ingrained Chinese beliefs, manifested in the analogies of the pendulum swing and the ‘bickering couple’, as well as the narrative of the ‘ballast’, lulled officials and scholars into undue optimism about the stability of the broader relationship. Third, analytical and methodological problems as well as political considerations prevented them from fully grasping the strategic shift against China in the US.

ABSTRACT The temporal stability and diversity of bacterial species composition as well as the antilisterial potential of two different, complex, and undefined microbial consortia from red-smear soft cheeses were investigated. Samples were collected twice, at 6-month intervals, from each of two food producers, and a total of 400 bacterial isolates were identified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis. Coryneform bacteria represented the majority of the isolates, with certain species being predominant. In addition, Marinolactobacillus psychrotolerans, Halomonas venusta, Halomonas variabilis, Halomonas sp. (106 to 107 CFU per g of smear), and an unknown, gram-positive bacterium (107 to 108 CFU per g of smear) are described for the first time in such a consortium. The species composition of one consortium was quite stable over 6 months, but the other consortium revealed less diversity of coryneform species as well as less stability. While the first consortium had a stable, extraordinarily high antilisterial potential in situ, the antilisterial activity of the second consortium was lower and decreased with time. The cause for the antilisterial activity of the two consortia remained unknown but is not due to the secretion of soluble, inhibitory substances by the individual components of the consortium. Our data indicate that the stability over time and a potential antilisterial activity are individual characteristics of the ripening consortia which can be monitored and used for safe food production without artificial preservatives.
