In this paper, the graphene oxide loaded with nano titanium dioxide (TiO2–GO) was synthesized through 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane (IPTMS) and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dispersion test. The results illustrated our modification was successful and TiO2–GO was transferred from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. That greatly enhanced the dispersity of TiO2–GO in epoxy through the observation of the coating morphology test. Moreover, the impact of TiO2–GO on anti-corrosion property in epoxy was investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Comparing to pristine particles including GO and TiO2, TiO2–GO could more significantly improve the resistance of corrosion with the help of IPTMS. Furthermore, the anti-corrosion mechanism of TiO2–GO in epoxy was tentatively proposed and discussed.

Graphene oxide–titanium (GO-Ti) composite materials were fabricated using GO as a precursor and then anchoring nano titanium (Nano-Ti) particles on GO sheets with the help of a silane coupling agent. Then, the coating samples were prepared by dispersing GO, Nano-Ti particles, and GO-Ti in an epoxy resin at a low weight fraction of 1 wt %. The GO-Ti composites were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dispersibility and anti-corrosion mechanism of the coatings were studied by sedimentation experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), SEM, and salt spray tests. The mechanical properties of the coatings were analyzed by friction and wear tests. The results showed that the Nano-Ti particles were successfully loaded on the GO surface by chemical bonds, which made GO-Ti composites exhibit better dispersibility in the epoxy than GO. Compared with Nano-Ti particles and GO, the GO-Ti composite exhibited significant advantages in improving the corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings at the same contents, which was attributed to the excellent dispersibility, inherent corrosion resistance, and sheet structure. Among the different proportions of composite materials, the GO-Ti (2:1) material exhibited the best dispersibility and corrosion resistance. In addition, the composite material also greatly improved the wear resistance of the coating.

Abstract The ever-increasing need for small and lightweight power sources for use in portable or wearable electronic devices has spurred the development of supercapacitors as a promising energy storage and conversion system. In this work, a simple, facile and easy-to-practice method has been developed to employ carbon paper (CP) as the support to coat molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and graphene oxide (GO), followed by electrodeposition of polyaniline (PANI) to render CP/MoS2-GO-PANI. The preparation parameters, such as amounts of MoS2, GO and number of aniline electropolymerization cycles, have been optimized to render CP/MoS2-GO-PANI the best capacitive performance. The as-prepared optimal CP/MoS2-GO-PANI is characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The supercapacitive properties of CP/MoS2-GO-PANI as an electrode have been evaluated electrochemically via cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy testing. CP/MoS2-GO-PANI delivers a specific capacitance of 255.1 F/g at 1.0 A/g and exhibits excellent rate capability under larger current densities. Moreover, a symmetrical supercapacitor is assembled and three are connected in series to power a light-emitting diode for ~15 minutes, demonstrating the promising application potential of CP/MoS2-GO-PANI-based supercapacitor.

Reduced graphene oxide–epoxy grafted poly(styrene-co-acrylate) composites (GESA) were prepared by anchoring different amount of epoxy modified poly(styrene-co-acrylate) (EPSA) onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets through π–π electrostatic attraction. The GESA composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The anti-corrosion properties of rGO/EPSA composites were evaluated by electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in hydroxyl-polyacrylate coating, and the results revealed that the corrosion rate was decreased from 3.509 × 10−1 to 1.394 × 10−6 mm/a.

The increasing interest of attachment of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) has been devoted to obtaining tremendous properties suitable for biosensor applications. Achieving precise control of the attachment and shape of AuNPs by methods described in the literature are far from satisfactory. This work shows the comparison of physical adsorption (PA), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) methods and the parameters of these methods on TNTs properties. The structural, chemical, phase and electrochemical characterizations of TNTs, Au/TNTs, AuNPs/TNTs are carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The use of PA methods does not allow the deposition of AuNPs on TNTs. CV allows easily obtaining spherical nanoparticles, for which the diameter increases from 20.3 ± 2.9 nm to 182.3 ± 51.7 nm as a concentration of tetrachloroauric acid solution increase from 0.1 mM to 10 mM. Increasing the AuNPs deposition time in the CA method increases the amount of gold, but the AuNPs diameter does not change (35.0 ± 5 nm). Importantly, the CA method also causes the dissolution of the nanotubes layer from 1000 ± 10.0 nm to 823 ± 15.3 nm. Modification of titanium dioxide nanotubes with gold nanoparticles improved the electron transfer and increased the corrosion resistance, as well as promoted the protein adsorption. Importantly, after the deposition of bovine serum albumin, an almost 5.5-fold (324%) increase in real impedance, compared to TNTs (59%) was observed. We found that the Au nanoparticles—especially those with smaller diameter—promoted the stability of bovine serum albumin binding to the TNTs platform. It confirms that the modification of TNTs with gold nanoparticles allows the development of the best platform for biosensing applications.

The impact of extra-low dosage (0.01% by weight of cement) Graphene Oxide (GO) on the properties of fresh and hardened nanocomposites was assessed. The use of a minimum amount of 2-D nanofiller would minimize costs and sustainability issues, therefore encouraging the market uptake of nanoengineered cement-based materials. GO was characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. GO consisted of stacked sheets up to 600 nm × 800 nm wide and 2 nm thick, oxygen content 31 at%. The impact of GO on the fresh admixtures was evaluated by rheology, flowability, and workability measurements. GO-modified samples were characterized by density measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, and compression and bending tests. Permeability was investigated using the boiling-water saturation technique, salt ponding test, and Initial Surface Absorption Test (ISAT). At 28 days, GO-nanocomposite exhibited increased density (+14%), improved compressive and flexural strength (+29% and +13%, respectively), and decreased permeability compared to the control sample. The strengthening effect dominated over the adverse effects associated with the worsening of the fresh properties; reduced permeability was mainly attributed to the refining of the pore network induced by the presence of GO.

Purpose The composition and corrosion behaviors of recycled and virgin Pb anode were investigated in industrial zinc electrowinning solution with different methods. The purpose of this study is the illustration of good anticorrosion activity of virgin Pb anodes compared to recycled one in industrial operation, while the compositions of both of them are the same which obtained from quantmetry method. Design/methodology/approach Its corrosion properties and electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen evolution reaction were appraised using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic polarization and ionic equilibrium methods. In addition, composition of anodes investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) method. The surface composition of samples was studied via X-ray diffractogram (XRD). Findings The results indicate that the anodes display different anodic behaviors during the galvanostatic polarization. Virgin Pb anode shows a “potential reduction” about 320 mV lower than recycled Pb anode after 6 h of polarization; also, the stable potential after 72 h for virgin Pb anode is 100 mV lower than recycled Pb anode. Also, The XPS results show a trace amount of Cl in recycled anodes which cause the more corrosion activity. XRD results indicate that virgin Pb anodes have been covered by more oxides than recycled anodes after 72 h of electrowinning. Originality/value The treatment of corrosion behavior by virginity has not been detected by any researchers yet. Therefore, it is imperative to study the corrosion behavior and exact composition analysis of virgin and recycled Pb anodes to comprehension of them. This paper fulfills this need.

In this paper, graphene oxide (GO) was grafted with sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) to achieve a new anti-corrosive pigment (STG) with homogenous dispersion in waterborne epoxy (EP). The results obtained from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) revealed that STP was successfully combined with GO by chemical bonding. The corrosion resistance of EP, GO/EP and STG/EP coatings on carbon steel substrates was investigated via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray test. The EIS results showed that the impedance value of coating with 0.7 wt.% STG reached 1.019 × 109 Ω∙cm2, which was considerably higher than that of neat waterborne EP coatings. Salt spray test results revealed once again that STG (0.7 wt.%)/EP coating had superior corrosion resistance. Besides, the STG (0.7 wt.%)/EP coated sample showed the highest adhesion strength between coating and substrate.

Cerium salts in the form of ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate and cerium(III) nitrate hexahydrate are widely used as corrosion inhibitors due to their ability to provide active protection against corrosion. When incorporated into polymeric, ceramic or hybrid coatings, cerium ions modify their structure and impart beneficial or adverse effects on barrier features, depending on the concentration and type of salt added. In this study, we compare the effect of varying amounts of Ce(III) and Ce(IV) ions on the structure and anti-corrosion properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-silica hybrid coatings deposited on AA7075 aluminum alloy. The PMMA-silica coatings provided for both additives a long-term protection of AA7075 due to the highly cross-linked structure and a less defective polymeric network; however, the self-healing ability as a key feature was achieved only by Ce(IV) ions. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy essays combined with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed the corrosion inhibition mechanisms occurring in corrosion-induced and artificial defects. It was found that intermediate Ce(IV) loadings (500 and 1000 ppm) proved to be more effective in providing a high corrosion resistance with an active barrier property, extending the service time up to 720 days in 3.5% NaCl solution. The regenerative action of Ce(IV) can be associated with the faster formation of oxides and hydroxides mainly at intermetallic particle sites of AA7075 at pH ~ 3, compared to those from Ce(III) formed at pH ~ 9. These results link an optimized hybrid structure provided by cerium ions with their self-healing ability, making PMMA-silica-Ce(IV) hybrids very attractive as low-cost, high-performance and smart chromium-free coatings.

This study aimed to synthesise and characterise two types of sol-gel acrylic coatings: one based on Si and the other based on Si and Zr. These coatings, which served as a barrier for corrosion protection of aluminium, were synthesised by sol-gel methodology using silicon precursors tetraethyl orthosilicate and organically modified silicon precursor 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, without and with the addition of zirconium(IV) n-propoxide chelated with methacrylic acid. The synthesis process was followed using real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which confirmed the condensation reactions of Si–O–Si and Si–O–Zr networks, depending on the sol type. This was reflected in the composition of the coating as well, as shown by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The coating topography, thickness and morphology were analysed using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to follow the degradation of acrylic coatings upon immersion in sodium chloride solution. Corrosion properties, evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.1 M NaCl, confirmed high barrier protection of coated aluminium with acrylic coatings based on Si and even better for coating based on Si with Zr. The more durable corrosion protection of the latter was also confirmed by salt spray testing.

This study modified graphene oxide (GO) with hydrophilic octadecylamine (ODA) via covalent bonding to improve its dispersion in silicone-modified epoxy resin (SMER) coatings. The structural and physical properties of ODA-GO were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle tests. The ODA-GO composite materials were added to SMER coatings by physical mixing. FE-SEM, water absorption, and contact angle tests were used to evaluate the physical properties of the ODA-GO/SMER coatings, while salt spray, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) methods were used to test the anticorrosive performance of ODA-GO/SMER composite coatings on Q235 steel substrates. It was found that ODA was successfully grafted onto the surfaces of GO. The resulting ODA-GO material exhibited good hydrophobicity and dispersion in SMER coatings. The anticorrosive properties of the ODA-GO/SMER coatings were significantly improved due to the increased interfacial adhesion between the nanosheets and SMER, lengthening of the corrosive solution diffusion path, and increased cathodic peeling resistance. The 1 wt.% ODA-GO/SMER coating provided the best corrosion resistance than SMER coatings with other amounts of ODA-GO (including no addition). After immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 28 days, the low-frequency end impedance value of the 1 wt.% ODA-GO/SMER coating remained high, at 6.2 × 108 Ω·cm2.
