Multiple forces vie to control the narratives of the Lingsar festival, a major annual event initiated about 350 years ago that uniquely brings together the indigenous Muslim Sasak and the migrant Hindu Balinese on Lombok, an island east of Bali in Indonesia. This attention to the festival is not surprising because governments, political and religious figures, commercial interests, and tourist industries compete to define and benefit from such events worldwide. Since 1983, I have noticed a variety of changes in religious beliefs, ritual personnel and protocol, interreligious relationships, sociocultural identities, founding narratives, and performing arts over time. Once, this festival featured beliefs and performing arts that were localized, neither truly Hindu nor Islamic, and ingrained into the natural, ancestralized environment. However, the festival had to Islamize and Sasakize (that is, become more Sasak) to retain relevance among the Sasak, and had to Hinduize and Balinize to remain relevant among the Balinese. Despite these changes and increasing pressures from reformist organizations, the festival continues; in fact, it has grown in popularity and, by 2019, attracted up to 50,000 people. A tolerance of ambiguity—allowing for changing and contradictory artistic narratives, multiple ritual positions and interpretations, new positionings of interreligious relationships, and deviation from public rhetoric—has been crucial to maintain the Lingsar festival into the 21st century.

In the 21st century, the world became a sign of globalization: global conflicts, global disasters, global economy, global Internet, etc. The Polish researcher Casimir Zhigulsky defines globalization as a kind of process, that is, the target set of characteristic changes that develop over time and occur in the modern world. These changes in general are reduced to mutual rapprochement, reduction of distances, the rapid appearance of a large number of different connections, contacts, exchanges, and to increase the dependence of society in almost all spheres of his life from what is happening in other, often very remote regions of the world.

В работе на основе полевых материалов начала XXI в. дана характеристика особенностей восприятия храмового праздника - Прокопьева дня (21 июля) в с. Большелуг Республики Коми. В устных рассказах информантов 1920-1960-х гг. наблюдается вариативность в его праздновании. Разнообразятся высказывания относительно количества дней празднования храмового праздника (от двух до четырех), даты начала и конца (от 19 до 24 июля), а также очередности гостевания в селе и ближайших деревнях. В условиях отсутствия достоверной информации о практике празднования Прокопьева дня, сложившейся в селе до 1930-х гг., происходит попытка «приватизировать» престольный праздник и начинают функционировать фольклорные рассказы о некогда обычной практике. Став главным общесельским праздником, Прокопьев день начинает притягивать различные ритуальные практики и обычаи (приметы, запреты и предписания). Данная ситуация развивается на фоне того, что в Большелуге церковь освящена во имя Свт. Николая, чудотворца и архиепископа Мир Ликийских, однако Николин день фольклорной традицией остается практически незамеченным. This paper is based on field materials from the beginning of the 21st century and describes the peculiarities of perception of the temple holiday (khramovoi or prestol’nyi prazdnik) - Prokopy Day (July 21) in the village of Bolshelug in the Komi Republic. Compared to oral stories of the 1920s and 1960s, there are variations in its later celebration. Various statements are made regarding the number of days the holiday is celebrated (from July 19 to 24), as well as the order of visiting in the village and in nearby villages. In the absence of reliable information about the practice of celebrating Prokopy Day which had been established in the village by the 1930s, attempts were made to “privatize” the feast day and to put into practice folkloric descriptions of the once common ritual. Having become the main village holiday, Prokopy Day also began to incorporate various new ritual practices and customs (omens, prohibitions and prescriptions). This process developed against the background of the fact that in Bolshelug the church was consecrated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and Archbishop of Myra, although St. Nicholas Day folklore has remained mostly overlooked.

This article examines the available literature on engaging young audiences to visit libraries, museums and performing arts shows, and their strategies for developing permanent audiences. The recommendations drawn from the review serve as an input for the Latin American Library for Children and Youth that is currently in a planning stage. Ideas regarding program, partnerships, communication and promotion of libraries in the context of the 21st century are explained in accordance with an audience approach that emphasises the presentness of children and youth, the demands and motivation of cultural participants, and the need to enable cultural rights.

Abstrak Kesenian tradisional memegang peranan dalam pencirian dan menjadi kekhasan suatu daerah. Bagi wilayah administratif yang menjadi cikal bakal suatu kesenian daerah tentu saja tidak sulit untuk menyebut istilah kesenian khas dan menjadi milik daerah tersebut. Lain halnya dengan wilayah administratif yang tidak memiliki kesenian daerah sehingga akan berusaha menciptakan sebuah kesenian untuk dijadikan sebagai kesenian khas bagi daerahnya. Beruntunglah bagi Kabupaten Subang yang menjadi cikal bakal beberapa kesenian yang terlahir dan besar di daerahnya. Tidak hanya sampai disitu, Pelestarian dan pengembangan kesenian tradisional tampak serius dilakukan. Hal tersebut terlihat dari papan nama berbagai kesenian (tradisional) di beberapa ruas jalan dalam wilayah Kabupaten Subang. Seiring berjalannya waktu tampak jelas terlihat adanya perubahan dalam pernak pernik atau tahapan pertunjukan pada beberapa seni pertunjukan tradisional. Kondisi tersebut pada akhirnya mengundang keingintahuan mengenai strategi kolaborasi apa yang membuat seni pertunjukan tradisional masih tetap diminati masyarakat Subang. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif analisis yang didukung dengan data lintas waktu baik dari sumber sekunder maupun dari pernyataan informan mengenai seni pertunjukan tradisional di Kabupaten Subang. Dari hasil penelitian diperoleh bahwa kolaborasi yang dilakukan meliputi kolaborasi lintas waktu dan lintas ruang yang masih dibatasi oleh seperangkat aturan agar kolaborasi tidak melenceng dari identitas ketradisionalannya.AbstractTraditional arts play a role in the characterization of a region. The Regency of Subang became the pioneer for inventing and creating some traditional arts. They were born and grew in the area, and their preservation and development are seriously taken into consideration. It is evident that some changes occurred over time, for example in the accessories or phase of performances at several traditional performing arts. ThisNaskah Diterima: 28 Februari 2013Naskah Disetujui: 2 April 2013condition makes the author curious about the strategy of collaboration that makes the people of Subang interested in traditional performing art. The author conducted descriptive analytical method supported by cross-time data either from primary or secondary sources. Abstract A number of studies have found that grammatical differences across registers are more extensive than those across dialects. However, there is a paucity of research examining intervarietal register change, exploring how registers change differently over time in different regional varieties. The present study addresses this diachronic deficit, focusing on grammatical developments – from the early 20th to the early 21st century – in corpora representing three written registers and two speech-based registers in Australian, British and American English. We conducted a factor analysis on 68 lexicogrammatical features to identify six dimensions of register variation, and subsequently investigated the diachronic change of the five registers across these dimensions. We interpret our findings in terms of the differential effects of broad social changes on individual registers, in light of existing findings on trends of change in different registers and varieties.

This chapter brings together the results of the previous chapters and shows what role Locke’s moral, religious, metaphysical, and epistemic background beliefs play in his thinking about persons and personal identity. Locke breaks with traditional metaphysical debates, first, by adopting a metaphysically agnostic stance with regard to the materiality or immateriality of thinking substances and, second, by arguing for a kind-dependent approach to questions of identity over time. Locke’s moral and legal conception of a person, according to which persons are subjects of accountability, is informed by his moral and religious beliefs. His thinking about moral accountability can be challenged and has been challenged by his contemporaries. Although Locke has good reasons for distinguishing our idea of a person from that of a human being and of a substance, these reasons are based on his metaphysical agnostic views and his religious belief in an afterlife.

I have been involved in inventing since I was five, and I quickly realized that for an invention to succeed, you have to target the world of the future. But what would the future be like? To find out, I became a student of technology trends and began to develop mathematical models of different technologies: computation, miniaturization, evolution over time. I have been doing that for 25 years, and it has been remarkable to me how powerful and predictive these models are. Now, before I show you some of these models and then try to build with you some of the scenarios for the future—and, in particular, focus on how these will benefit technology for the disabled—I would like to share one trend that I think is particularly profound and that many people fail to take into consideration. It is this: the rate of progress—what I call the “paradigmshift rate”—is itself accelerating. We are doubling this paradigm-shift rate every decade. The whole 20th century was not 100 years of progress as we know it today, because it has taken us a while to speed up to the current level of progress. The 20t h century represented about 20 years of progress in terms of today’s rate. And at today’s rate of change, we will achieve an amount of progress equivalent to that of the whole 20th century in 14 years, then as the acceleration continues, in 7 years. The progress in the 21st century will be about 1,000 times greater than that in the 20th century, which was no slouch in terms of change.

This study identifies interplay between the localization processes and formal as well as informal institutions in a specific context. Particularly the changes over time in institutions and localization processes are in focus. A longitudinal study of institutional changes in local management has been conducted from 1997 to 2002 among local CEOs, chief accountants and production managers in a Danish SME, using mainly qualitative methods. Data have been compared to primary data from similar companies in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The study has resulted in establishing a model for comparing interplay between localization processes in SMEs and the formal and informal institutions in different transition and post‐transition economies.

This concluding chapter highlights some of the connections between the traditional styles and genres of the performing arts across Sumatra, paying attention to the impact of indigenous religions and Islam as well as classification of the musical instruments and ensembles. It also considers how the musical arts are linked to myths and legends, and how myths and art forms are related to indigenous religious beliefs. Finally, it discusses Hindu myths and art forms; Muslim-associated myths and legends and art forms; Chinese myths and art forms; dances and music-dance relationships; connections between the performing arts in Sumatra's Malay subgroups and social classes; gender factors; signal items of Sumatran identity and local uniqueness; and major changes in the performing arts since around 1900. The chapter suggests that more research into the whole of greater Sumatra is needed in order to elucidate the extent to which an understanding of these connections can contribute to a concept of Sumatra's performing arts as a unified whole.

For the purposes of this article, we will be referring to a preprint as a version of a manuscript that is self-archived and shared publicly before publication in a scholarly journal. The status of a preprint can exist at several points on the scholarly continuum including, but not limited to, an author’s early draft, a submitted manuscript under review, or an accepted manuscript.
