Producing high-resolution near-real-time forecasts of fire behavior and smoke impact that are useful for fire and air quality management requires accurate initialization of the fire location. One common representation of the fire progression is through the fire arrival time, which defines the time that the fire arrives at a given location. Estimating the fire arrival time is critical for initializing the fire location within coupled fire-atmosphere models. We present a new method that utilizes machine learning to estimate the fire arrival time from satellite data in the form of burning/not burning/no data rasters. The proposed method, based on a support vector machine (SVM), is tested on the 10 largest California wildfires of the 2020 fire season, and evaluated using independent observed data from airborne infrared (IR) fire perimeters. The SVM method results indicate a good agreement with airborne fire observations in terms of the fire growth and a spatial representation of the fire extent. A 12% burned area absolute percentage error, a 5% total burned area mean percentage error, a 0.21 False Alarm Ratio average, a 0.86 Probability of Detection average, and a 0.82 Sørensen’s coefficient average suggest that this method can be used to monitor wildfires in near-real-time and provide accurate fire arrival times for improving fire modeling even in the absence of IR fire perimeters.

In this article, the authors propose two models for BLDC motor winding temperature estimation using machine learning methods. For the purposes of the research, measurements were made for over 160 h of motor operation, and then, they were preprocessed. The algorithms of linear regression, ElasticNet, stochastic gradient descent regressor, support vector machines, decision trees, and AdaBoost were used for predictive modeling. The ability of the models to generalize was achieved by hyperparameter tuning with the use of cross-validation. The conducted research led to promising results of the winding temperature estimation accuracy. In the case of sensorless temperature prediction (model 1), the mean absolute percentage error MAPE was below 4.5% and the coefficient of determination R2 was above 0.909. In addition, the extension of the model with the temperature measurement on the casing (model 2) allowed reducing the error value to about 1% and increasing R2 to 0.990. The results obtained for the first proposed model show that the overheating protection of the motor can be ensured without direct temperature measurement. In addition, the introduction of a simple casing temperature measurement system allows for an estimation with accuracy suitable for compensating the motor output torque changes related to temperature.

Precise information of fault location plays a vital role in expediting the restoration process, after being subjected to any kind of fault in power distribution grids. This paper proposed the Stockwell transform (ST) based optimized machine learning approach, to locate the faults and to identify the faulty sections in the distribution grids. This research employed the ST to extract useful features from the recorded three-phase current signals and fetches them as inputs to different machine learning tools (MLT), including the multilayer perceptron neural networks (MLP-NN), support vector machines (SVM), and extreme learning machines (ELM). The proposed approach employed the constriction-factor particle swarm optimization (CF-PSO) technique, to optimize the parameters of the SVM and ELM for their better generalization performance. Hence, it compared the obtained results of the test datasets in terms of the selected statistical performance indices, including the root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), percent bias (PBIAS), RMSE-observations to standard deviation ratio (RSR), coefficient of determination (R2), Willmott’s index of agreement (WIA), and Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSEC) to confirm the effectiveness of the developed fault location scheme. The satisfactory values of the statistical performance indices, indicated the superiority of the optimized machine learning tools over the non-optimized tools in locating faults. In addition, this research confirmed the efficacy of the faulty section identification scheme based on overall accuracy. Furthermore, the presented results validated the robustness of the developed approach against the measurement noise and uncertainties associated with pre-fault loading condition, fault resistance, and inception angle.

Unconventional resources have recently gained a lot of attention, and as a consequence, there has been an increase in research interest in predicting total organic carbon (TOC) as a crucial quality indicator. TOC is commonly measured experimentally; however, due to sampling restrictions, obtaining continuous data on TOC is difficult. Therefore, different empirical correlations for TOC have been presented. However, there are concerns about the generalization and accuracy of these correlations. In this paper, different machine learning (ML) techniques were utilized to develop models that predict TOC from well logs, including formation resistivity (FR), spontaneous potential (SP), sonic transit time (Δt), bulk density (RHOB), neutron porosity (CNP), gamma ray (GR), and spectrum logs of thorium (Th), uranium (Ur), and potassium (K). Over 1250 data points from the Devonian Duvernay shale were utilized to create and validate the model. These datasets were obtained from three wells; the first was used to train the models, while the data sets from the other two wells were utilized to test and validate them. Support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and decision tree (DT) were the ML approaches tested, and their predictions were contrasted with three empirical correlations. Various AI methods’ parameters were tested to assure the best possible accuracy in terms of correlation coefficient (R) and average absolute percentage error (AAPE) between the actual and predicted TOC. The three ML methods yielded good matches; however, the RF-based model has the best performance. The RF model was able to predict the TOC for the different datasets with R values range between 0.93 and 0.99 and AAPE values less than 14%. In terms of average error, the ML-based models outperformed the other three empirical correlations. This study shows the capability and robustness of ML models to predict the total organic carbon from readily available logging data without the need for core analysis or additional well interventions.

Background: Abdominal cavity irrigation is a more minimally invasive surgery than that using a gas. Minimally invasive surgery improves the quality of life of patients; however, it demands higher skills from the doctors. Therefore, the study aimed to reduce the burden by assisting and automating the hemostatic procedure a highly frequent procedure by taking advantage of the clearness of the endoscopic images and continuous bleeding point observations in the liquid. We aimed to construct a method for detecting organs, bleeding sites, and hemostasis regions.Methods: We developed a method to perform real-time detection based on machine learning using laparoscopic videos. Our training dataset was prepared from three experiments in pigs. Linear support vector machine was applied using new color feature descriptors. In the verification of the accuracy of the classifier, we performed five-part cross-validation. Classification processing time was measured to verify the real-time property. Furthermore, we visualized the time series class change of the surgical field during the hemostatic procedure.Results: The accuracy of our classifier was 98.3% and the processing cost to perform real-time was enough. Furthermore, it was conceivable to quantitatively indicate the completion of the hemostatic procedure based on the changes in the bleeding region by ablation and the hemostasis regions by tissue coagulation.Conclusions: The organs, bleeding sites, and hemostasis regions classification was useful for assisting and automating the hemostatic procedure in the liquid. Our method can be adapted to more hemostatic procedures.

AbstractThe Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission provides satellite precipitation products with an unprecedented spatio-temporal resolution and spatial coverage. However, its near-real-time (NRT) product still suffers from low accuracy. This study aims to improve the early run of the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) by using four machine learning approaches, i.e., support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), artificial neural network (ANN), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). The cloud properties are selected as the predictors in addition to the original IMERG in these approaches. All the four approaches show similar improvement, with 53%-60% reduction of root-mean-square error (RMSE) compared with the original IMERG in a humid area, i.e., the Dongjiang River Basin (DJR) in southeastern China. The improvements are even greater in a semi-arid area, i.e., the Fenhe River Basin (FHR) in central China, the RMSE reduction ranges from 63%-66%. The products generated by the machine learning methods performs similarly to or even outperform than the final run of IMERG. Feature importance analysis, a technique to evaluate input features based on how useful they are in predicting a target variable, indicates that the cloud height and the brightness temperature are the most useful information in improving satellite precipitation products, followed by the atmospheric reflectivity and the surface temperature. This study shows that a more accurate NRT precipitation product can be produced by combining machine learning approaches and cloud information, which is of importance for hydrological applications that requires NRT precipitation information including flood monitoring.

Abstract Due to high demand for energy, oil and gas companies started to drill wells in remote areas and unconventional environments. This raised the complexity of drilling operations, which were already challenging and complex. To adapt, drilling companies expanded their use of the real-time operation center (RTOC) concept, in which real-time drilling data are transmitted from remote sites to companies’ headquarters. In RTOC, groups of subject matter experts monitor the drilling live and provide real-time advice to improve operations. With the increase of drilling operations, processing the volume of generated data is beyond a human's capability, limiting the RTOC impact on certain components of drilling operations. To overcome this limitation, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) technologies were introduced to monitor and analyze the real-time drilling data, discover hidden patterns, and provide fast decision-support responses. AI/ML technologies are data-driven technologies, and their quality relies on the quality of the input data: if the quality of the input data is good, the generated output will be good; if not, the generated output will be bad. Unfortunately, due to the harsh environments of drilling sites and the transmission setups, not all of the drilling data is good, which negatively affects the AI/ML results. The objective of this paper is to utilize AI/ML technologies to improve the quality of real-time drilling data. The paper fed a large real-time drilling dataset, consisting of over 150,000 raw data points, into Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree (DT) models. The models were trained on the valid and not-valid datapoints. The confusion matrix was used to evaluate the different AI/ML models including different internal architectures. Despite the slowness of ANN, it achieved the best result with an accuracy of 78%, compared to 73% and 41% for DT and SVM, respectively. The paper concludes by presenting a process for using AI technology to improve real-time drilling data quality. To the author's knowledge based on literature in the public domain, this paper is one of the first to compare the use of multiple AI/ML techniques for quality improvement of real-time drilling data. The paper provides a guide for improving the quality of real-time drilling data.

Salt-affected soil is a prominent ecological and environmental problem in dry farming areas throughout the world. China has nearly 9.9 million km2 of salt-affected land. The identification, monitoring, and utilization of soil salinization have become important research topics for promoting sustainable progress. In this paper, using field-measured spectral data and soil salinity parameter data, through analysis and transformation of spectral data, five machine learning models, namely, random forest regression (RFR), support vector regression (SVR), gradient-boosted regression tree (GBRT), multilayer perceptron regression (MLPR), and least angle regression (Lars) are compared. The following performance measures of each model were evaluated: the collinear problems, handling data noise, stability, and the accuracy. In terms of these four aspects, the performance of each model on estimating soil salinity is evaluated. The results demonstrate that among the five models, RFR has the best performance in dealing with collinearity, RFR and MLPR have the best performance in dealing with data noise, and the SVR model is the most stable. The Lars model has the highest accuracy, with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.87, ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) of 2.67, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.18, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.11. Then, the comprehensive comparison and analysis of the five models are carried out, and it is found that the comprehensive performance of RFR model is the best; hence, this method is most suitable for estimating soil salinity using hyperspectral data. This study can provide a reference for the selection of regression methods in subsequent studies on estimating soil salinity using hyperspectral data.

Abstract. The leaf area index (LAI) is one of key variable of crops which plays important role in agriculture, ecology and climate change for global circulation models to compute energy and water fluxes. In the recent research era, the machine-learning algorithms have provided accurate computational approaches for the estimation of crops biophysical parameters using remotely sensed data. The three machine-learning algorithms, random forest regression (RFR), support vector regression (SVR) and artificial neural network regression (ANNR) were used to estimate the LAI for crops in the present study. The three different dates of Landsat-8 satellite images were used during January 2017 – March 2017 at different crops growth conditions in Varanasi district, India. The sampling regions were fully covered by major Rabi season crops like wheat, barley and mustard etc. In total pooled data, 60% samples were taken for the training of the algorithms and rest 40% samples were taken as testing and validation of the machinelearning regressions algorithms. The highest sensitivity of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) with LAI was found using RFR algorithms (R2 = 0.884, RMSE = 0.404) as compared to SVR (R2 = 0.847, RMSE = 0.478) and ANNR (R2 = 0.829, RMSE = 0.404). Therefore, RFR algorithms can be used for accurate estimation of LAI for crops using satellite data.

This paper presents a posture recognition system aimed at detecting sitting postures of a wheelchair user. The main goals of the proposed system are to identify and inform irregular and improper posture to prevent sitting-related health issues such as pressure ulcers, with the potential that it could also be used for individuals without mobility issues. In the proposed monitoring system, an array of 16 screen printed pressure sensor units was employed to obtain pressure data, which are sampled and processed in real-time using read-out electronics. The posture recognition was performed for four sitting positions: right-, left-, forward- and backward leaning based on k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), support vector machines (SVM), random forest (RF), decision tree (DT) and LightGBM machine learning algorithms. As a result, a posture classification accuracy of up to 99.03 percent can be achieved. Experimental studies illustrate that the system can provide real-time pressure distribution value in the form of a pressure map on a standard PC and also on a raspberry pi system equipped with a touchscreen monitor. The stored pressure distribution data can later be shared with healthcare professionals so that abnormalities in sitting patterns can be identified by employing a post-processing unit. The proposed system could be used for risk assessments related to pressure ulcers. It may be served as a benchmark by recording and identifying individuals’ sitting patterns and the possibility of being realized as a lightweight portable health monitoring device.

Several methods have been tried to estimate air temperature using satellite imagery. In this paper, the results of two machine learning algorithms, Support Vector Machine and Random Forest, are compared with Multivariate Linear Regression, TVX and Ordinary kriging. Several geographic, remote sensing and time variables are used as predictors. The validation is carried out using four different statistics on a daily basis allowing the use of ANOVA to compare the results. The main conclusion is that Random Forest with residual kriging produces the best results (R$^2$=0.612 $\pm$ 0.019, NSE=0.578 $\pm$ 0.025, RMSE=1.068 $\pm$ 0.027, PBIAS=-0.172 $\pm$ 0.046), whereas TVX produces the least accurate results. The environmental conditions in the study area are not really suited to TVX, moreover this method only takes into account satellite data. On the other hand, regression methods (Support Vector Machine, Random Forest and Multivariate Linear Regression) use several parameters that are easily calculated from a Digital Elevation Model, adding very little difficulty to the use of satellite data alone. The most important variables in the Random Forest Model were satellite temperature, potential irradiation and cdayt, a cosine transformation of the julian day.
