Power system failures or outages due to short-circuits or “faults” can result in long service interruptions leading to significant socio-economic consequences. It is critical for electrical utilities to quickly ascertain fault characteristics, including location, type, and duration, to reduce the service time of an outage. Existing fault detection mechanisms (relays and digital fault recorders) are slow to communicate the fault characteristics upstream to the substations and control centers for action to be taken quickly. Fortunately, due to availability of high-resolution phasor measurement units (PMUs), more event-driven solutions can be captured in real time. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach for determining fault characteristics using samples of fault trajectories. A random forest regressor (RFR)-based model is used to detect real-time fault location and its duration simultaneously. This model is based on combining multiple uncorrelated trees with state-of-the-art boosting and aggregating techniques in order to obtain robust generalizations and greater accuracy without overfitting or underfitting. Four cases were studied to evaluate the performance of RFR: 1. Detecting fault location (case 1), 2. Predicting fault duration (case 2), 3. Handling missing data (case 3), and 4. Identifying fault location and length in a real-time streaming environment (case 4). A comparative analysis was conducted between the RFR algorithm and state-of-the-art models, including deep neural network, Hoeffding tree, neural network, support vector machine, decision tree, naive Bayesian, and K-nearest neighborhood. Experiments revealed that RFR consistently outperformed the other models in detection accuracy, prediction error, and processing time.

In today’s grid, the technological based cyber-physical systems have continued to be plagued with cyberattacks and intrusions. Any intrusive action on the power system’s Optimal Power Flow (OPF) modules can cause a series of operational instabilities, failures, and financial losses. Real time intrusion detection has become a major challenge for the power community and energy stakeholders. Current conventional methods have continued to exhibit shortfalls in tackling these security issues. In order to address this security issue, this paper proposes a hybrid Support Vector Machine and Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (SVMNN) algorithm that involves the combination of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and multilayer perceptron neural network (MPLNN) algorithms for predicting and detecting cyber intrusion attacks into power system networks. In this paper, a modified version of the IEEE Garver 6-bus test system and a 24-bus system were used as case studies. The IEEE Garver 6-bus test system was used to describe the attack scenarios, whereas load flow analysis was conducted on real time data of a modified Nigerian 24-bus system to generate the bus voltage dataset that considered several cyberattack events for the hybrid algorithm. Sising various performance metricion and load/generator injections, en included in the manuscriptmulation results showed the relevant influences of cyberattacks on power systems in terms of voltage, power, and current flows. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed hybrid SVMNN algorithm, the results are compared with other models in related studies. The results demonstrated that the hybrid algorithm achieved a detection accuracy of 99.6%, which is better than recently proposed schemes.

Brain hemorrhage is a severe threat to human life, and its timely and correct diagnosis and treatment are of great importance. Multiple types of brain hemorrhage are distinguished depending on the location and character of bleeding. The main division covers five subtypes: subdural, epidural, intraventricular, intraparenchymal, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. This paper presents an approach to detect these intracranial hemorrhage types in computed tomography images of the head. The model trained for each hemorrhage subtype is based on a double-branch convolutional neural network of ResNet-50 architecture. It extracts features from two chromatic representations of the input data: a concatenation of the image normalized in different intensity windows and a stack of three consecutive slices creating a 3D spatial context. The joint feature vector is passed to the classifier to produce the final decision. We tested two tools: the support vector machine and the random forest. The experiments involved 372,556 images from 11,454 CT series of 9997 patients, with each image annotated with labels related to the hemorrhage subtypes. We validated deep networks from both branches of our framework and the model with either of two classifiers under consideration. The obtained results justify the use of a combination of double-source features with the random forest classifier. The system outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of F1 score. The highest detection accuracy was obtained in intraventricular (96.7%) and intraparenchymal hemorrhages (93.3%).

A photoplethysmography method has recently been widely used to noninvasively measure blood volume changes during a cardiac cycle. Photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals are sensitive to artifacts that negatively impact the accuracy of many important measurements. In this paper, we propose an efficient system for detecting PPG signal artifacts acquired from a fingertip in the public healthcare database named Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care (MIMIC) by using 11 features as the input of the random forest algorithm and classified the signals into two classes: acceptable and anomalous. A real-time algorithm is proposed to identify artifacts by using the method. The efficient Fisher score feature selection algorithm was used to order and select 11 relevant features from 19 available features that represented the PPG signal very effectively. Six machine learning algorithms (random forest, decision tree, Gaussian naïve Bayes, linear support vector machine, artificial neural network, and probabilistic neural network) were applied with the extracted features, and their classification accuracy was measured. Among them, the random forest had the best performance using only 11 out of 19 features with an accuracy of 85.68%. Our proposed method also achieved good sensitivity and specificity value of 86.57% and 85.09%, respectively. The proposed real-time algorithm can be an easy and convenient way for real-time PPG signal artifact detection using smartphones and wearable devices.

Mammalian behavior is typically monitored by observation. However, direct observation requires a substantial amount of effort and time, if the number of mammals to be observed is sufficiently large or if the observation is conducted for a prolonged period. In this study, machine learning methods as hidden Markov models (HMMs), random forests, support vector machines (SVMs), and neural networks, were applied to detect and estimate whether a goat is in estrus based on the goat’s behavior; thus, the adequacy of the method was verified. Goat’s tracking data was obtained using a video tracking system and used to estimate whether they, which are in “estrus” or “non-estrus”, were in either states: “approaching the male”, or “standing near the male”. Totally, the PC of random forest seems to be the highest. However, The percentage concordance (PC) value besides the goats whose data were used for training data sets is relatively low. It is suggested that random forest tend to over-fit to training data. Besides random forest, the PC of HMMs and SVMs is high. However, considering the calculation time and HMM’s advantage in that it is a time series model, HMM is better method. The PC of neural network is totally low, however, if the more goat’s data were acquired, neural network would be an adequate method for estimation.

Permeability is a vital parameter in reservoir engineering that affects production directly. Since this parameter's significance is obvious, finding a way for accurate determination of permeability is essential as well. In this paper, the permeability of two notable carbonate reservoirs (Ilam and Sarvak) in the southwest of Iran was predicted by several different methods, and the level of accuracy in all models was compared. For this purpose, Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLP), Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF), Support Vector Regression (SVR), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF) methods were chosen. The full set of real well-logging data was investigated by random forest, and five of them were selected as the potent variables. Depth, Computed gamma-ray log (CGR), Spectral gamma-ray log (SGR), Neutron porosity log (NPHI), and density log (RHOB) were considered efficacious variables and used as input data, while permeability was considered output. It should be noted that permeability values are derived from core analysis. Statistical parameters like the coefficient of determination ( ), root mean square error (RMSE) and standard deviation (SD) were determined for the train, test, and total sets. Based on statistical and graphical results, the SVM and DT models perform more accurately than others. RMSE, SD and R2values of SVM and DT models are 0.38, 1.63, 0.97 and 0.44, 2.89, and 0.96 respectively. The results of the best-proposed models of this paper were then compared with the outcome of the empirical equation for permeability prediction. Several pedestrian navigation solutions have been proposed to date, and most of them are based on smartphones. Real-time recognition of pedestrian mode and smartphone posture is a key issue in navigation. Traditional ML (Machine Learning) classification methods have drawbacks, such as insufficient recognition accuracy and poor timing. This paper presents a real-time recognition scheme for comprehensive human activities, and this scheme combines deep learning algorithms and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) sensors’ measurements. In this study, we performed four main experiments, namely pedestrian motion mode recognition, smartphone posture recognition, real-time comprehensive pedestrian activity recognition, and pedestrian navigation. In the procedure of recognition, we designed and trained deep learning models using LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) and CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) networks based on Tensorflow framework. The accuracy of traditional ML classification methods was also used for comparison. Test results show that the accuracy of motion mode recognition was improved from 89.9 % , which was the highest accuracy and obtained by SVM (Support Vector Machine), to 90.74 % (LSTM) and 91.92 % (CNN); the accuracy of smartphone posture recognition was improved from 81.60 % , which is the highest accuracy and obtained by NN (Neural Network), to 93.69 % (LSTM) and 95.55 % (CNN). We give a model transformation procedure based on the trained CNN network model, and then obtain the converted . t f l i t e model, which can be run in Android devices for real-time recognition. Real-time recognition experiments were performed in multiple scenes, a recognition model trained by the CNN network was deployed in a Huawei Mate20 smartphone, and the five most used pedestrian activities were designed and verified. The overall accuracy was up to 89.39 % . Overall, the improvement of recognition capability based on deep learning algorithms was significant. Therefore, the solution was helpful to recognize comprehensive pedestrian activities during navigation. On the basis of the trained model, a navigation test was performed; mean bias was reduced by more than 1.1 m. Accordingly, the positioning accuracy was improved obviously, which is meaningful to apply DL in the area of pedestrian navigation to make improvements.

This study describes a framework that provides qualitative weather information on winter precipitation types using a data-driven approach. The framework incorporates the data retrieved from weather radars and the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model to account for relevant precipitation microphysics. To enable multimodel-based ensemble classification, we selected six supervised machine learning models: k-nearest neighbors, logistic regression, support vector machine, decision tree, random forest, and multi-layer perceptron. Our model training and cross-validation results based on Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) showed that all the models performed better than our baseline method, which applies two thresholds (surface temperature and atmospheric layer thickness) for binary classification (i.e., rain/snow). Among all six models, random forest presented the best classification results for the basic classes (rain, freezing rain, and snow) and the further refinement of the snow classes (light, moderate, and heavy). Our model evaluation, which uses an independent dataset not associated with model development and learning, led to classification performance consistent with that from the MCS analysis. Based on the visual inspection of the classification maps generated for an individual radar domain, we confirmed the improved classification capability of the developed models (e.g., random forest) compared to the baseline one in representing both spatial variability and continuity.

The traditional methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) have obvious disadvantages such as being time-consuming, laborious and non-synchronizing, and so on. This paper presents a novel and efficient approach to detect structural damages from real-time vibration signals via a convolutional neural network (CNN). As vibration signals (acceleration) reflect the structural response to the changes of the structural state, hence, a CNN, as a classifier, can map vibration signals to the structural state and detect structural damages. As it is difficult to obtain enough damage samples in practical engineering, finite element analysis (FEA) provides an alternative solution to this problem. In this paper, training samples for the CNN are obtained using FEA of a steel frame, and the effectiveness of the proposed detection method is evaluated by inputting the experimental data into the CNN. The results indicate that, the detection accuracy of the CNN trained using FEA data reaches 94% for damages introduced in the numerical model and 90% for damages in the real steel frame. It is demonstrated that the CNN has an ideal detection effect for both single damage and multiple damages. The combination of FEA and experimental data provides enough training and testing samples for the CNN, which improves the practicability of the CNN-based detection method in engineering practice.
