Sustainable medical tourism is an emergent and growing business worldwide, combining different and very specific purposes from pleasurable travel to sometimes-stressful services of health care. Lithuania can boast of medical technologies and the professionalism of doctors, but this is not enough to compete in the field of sustainable medical tourism. In this situation, cooperation is very significant in sustainable medical tourism. This research investigates a conceptual framework for cooperation possibilities in sustainable medical tourism. Based on a systematic and comparative analysis of scientific literature, the authors of this paper present the conceptual model illustrating the dissemination of sustainable medical tourism through cooperation. The overall results imply that facilitators’ cooperation perspectives in sustainable medical tourism should be highly beneficial for participants and medical tourists. The basis for the improvement of cooperation is communication, contact development, the form of work organization, coordination of work, sharing of knowledge and experience. Cooperation in this particular field determines the role of tourism development, but it is concluded that cooperation in this area is not developed well.

От количества и качества их труда зависит экономический результат деятельности лечебно-профилактических учреждений (ЛПУ) в целом. В статье приводится сравнительный анализ занимающихся подготовкой экономистов в области здравоохранения по различным критериям. Подчеркивается необходимость непрерывного совершенствования подготовки управленческих кадров в области экономики здравоохранения в современных условиях развития общества. One of the consequences of the implementation of medical activities in various economic forms is a change in the economic situation of health care workers. The number and quality of their work depends on the economic result of the activities of medical and preventive institutions (LPU) as a whole. The article presents a comparative analysis of the health economists who are engaged in training according to various criteria. The necessity of continuous improvement of training of managerial personnel in the field of health economics in the modern conditions of society development is emphasized.

In recent years, the applications of Lean Manufacturing (LM) in different types of industries are growing rapidly. Some of the organizations have reported huge benefits, while many industries have not obtained the desired results. One of the reasons for this can be attributed to improper understanding of LM by both the management and employees of an organization. Researchers worldwide have attempted to solve this issue by proposing various frameworks. A literature review on frameworks of LM revealed around 30 frameworks. A comparative analysis carried out on these frameworks has shown that these frameworks suffer from various shortcomings. Hence in this paper, an attempt has been made to propose a new conceptual framework for LM, which will resolve some of these limitations. The proposed framework utilizes 65 LM elements, which are categorized according to the decision levels and the role of internal stakeholders in an organization. According to the authors' knowledge, there is no LM framework in the literature, which is as comprehensive as the proposed one and which provides a complete integration of these elements into a coherent whole. However, the proposed framework is conceptual and needs to be validated.

Purpose This paper aims to address and identify the major stakeholders in the medical tourism industry, based on their participation in medical tourism activities and their support for medical tourism development. Design/methodology/approach This paper systematically reviews the content of medical tourism studies from literature to identify key stakeholders and address the roles they play in the medical tourism industry. Findings This study shows that the key stakeholders in the medical tourism industry are eight, namely, medical tourists, health-care providers, government agencies, facilitators, accreditation and credentialing bodies, health-care marketers, insurance providers and infrastructure and facilities. These stakeholders strongly influence medical tourists’ decision-making process in seeking medical treatment abroad. Besides, a successful medical tourism development depends greatly on the excellent partnership between all stakeholders. Practical implications This paper sheds light on the crucial role of these stakeholders that can be an important consideration in medical tourists’ decision-making process and industry growth. The study can facilitate policymakers in designing and developing policies to improve medical tourism practices. Originality/value This paper expands the knowledge about medical tourism literature by identifying and explaining the significant role of each stakeholder in the industry. The results of this paper are quite revealing to all practitioners in terms of the potential strategies and medical tourism growth. The study establishes a foundation for future medical tourism research in the rapidly growing industry.

Despite the importance given to manufacturing focus in the literature, the subject area continues to suffer from three interrelated problems: lack of agreement with regard to the meaning of “focus” the absence of a conceptual framework for integrating the existing body of research; and uncertainty with regard to the appropriate direction of future research. These problems should be addressed if the focus literature is to continue to mature, and if the true role of focus is to be understood in the light of the “newer” strategic imperatives, such as time‐based competition and flexible manufacturing. Introduces a conceptual model of focus specifically designed in response to these problems. The conceptual model identifies three distinct dimensions of focus, and relates these to the competitive factors facing manufacturing organizations. It is designed specifically to serve as a tool with which researchers and managers can discuss the impact of focus at the firm level. A review of key works in manufacturing focus is also included to justify the structure of the model, and to show how the model integrates previous conceptual and empirical research on focus.

PurposeThis study aims to put forward a conceptual framework to promote strategies for exploring and exploiting value co-creation with suppliers through dynamic capabilities development.Design/methodology/approachThe conceptual framework was developed by applying deductive logic to blend the theoretical perspectives of value co-creation and dynamic capabilities concerning interaction and innovation.FindingsThe suggested framework emphasized that to co-create value with suppliers, health-care organizations need to integrate innovation abilities with interactional abilities for assimilating mutual processes and resources. The study also points out the crucial role of middle managers to articulate the diverse value perspectives and act as change catalysts.Practical implicationsThis paper provides a roadmap for health-care managers to develop internal bundles of resources and integrate inter-organizational processes in the direction of co-creating value. The approach suggests the use of project pipelines and performance measures as managerial tools for aligning value co-creating initiatives with suppliers.Originality/valueThe study is a pioneering attempt to develop a conceptual framework for co-creating value with suppliers and, consequently, to provide innovative services to patients. The study aligns with previous value co-creation and dynamic capabilities works in terms of interaction and innovation development. However, based on the interrelation of these two dimensions, the study puts forth four interrelated processes (experimenting new possibilities of value creation; articulating value alignment initiatives; implementing mutual benefits; and executing and managing performance improvement) attached by mutual change mechanisms.

Summary The need for mental health care services is a growing concern around the world. This article proposes a conceptual model for the role a mental health care navigator to meet the growing needs of consumers who are seeking greater access to fragmented and confusing mental health care services. This conceptual model proposes integrating mental health into primary care with a more patient-centered approach to the care of the whole person. This approach is congruent with The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion Charter calling for the reorienting of health services focusing on the total needs of the individual as a whole person. Although USA focused, the model has potential for sharing across countries to build capacity for mental health care in other countries around the world. The conceptual model focuses on matching consumer mental health care needs with the correct mental health care services. This would ensure that patients get the appropriate mental health care services while allowing the primary care physician to maintain the role of coordinator of care for all of the patient’s health care needs. The main intent of the model is to stimulate discussion and exploration around the role of a proposed mental health care navigator that can lead to creating models reflecting local need and adaptation. Successful models can lead to collaborative discussion encouraging capacity building in other countries. The authors maintain that coordination of health care, including mental, medical and surgical care, is the best approach to controlling costs and ensuring the health of the whole person.

AbstractThere is an increasing focus on bridging human behaviour and attitudes towards sustainability. This article focuses on the factors that influence sustainable behaviour of working people. Based on a systematic and comparative analysis of scientific literature, the authors of the paper present the theoretical conceptual model, which illustrates sustainable behaviour. The aim of the empirical research is to examine how employees relate to sustainable behaviour across generations, genders and different modes of education through economic, environmental and social domains. A quantitative method in the form of a survey was selected to capture individual employee attitudes and actions regarding sustainable behaviour. A total of 412 complete responses from Lithuanian employees were used for data analysis. The results of empirical research revealed a significant relationship between gender, generation and education, and sustainable employee behaviour.

The article analyzes some, in the opinion of the author, key factors that determine the nature and consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, which has a more or less significant effect on the turbulent state of the modern world, giving it special specificity, additional significance and irreversible character. Having analyzed a number of pandemic assessments and ideas popular in the scientific literature for the state and prospects of the modern world, it is concluded that with all the possible reservations in this matter, the coronavirus pandemic can be considered as one of the most important factors enhancing the significance of those tectonic shifts in the basic infrastructures of the modern world, which serve as the basis for a change in the liberal/ unipolar world order by a new type of world system. It is shown that the pandemic exposed those pain points that, by definition, are characteristic of transition periods or the so-called axial times. It is accompanied by an exacerbation of contradictions and conflicts between nations, hostility and demonization of the enemy and, accordingly, various forms of racism, xenophobia. Having critically analyzed the ideas about the revival of the positive role of the national state, the supposed end of globalization, the “post-coronavirus world”, the so-called “new normality”, etc., their author’s interpretation is given. Of course, a significant place is given to a comparative analysis of the issues concerning the forms and ways of solving the problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic by different countries.

Purpose The unprecedented crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic has posed an enormous challenge ever for health-care organisations to find strategies to deal with their survival. The health-care employees are the frontline soldiers to fight against COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, there is a lack of research regarding the conceptualisation of COVID-19 and its impact on health-care employees’ well-being and their organisational sustainability. Extending the role of responsible leadership (RL), the purpose of this paper is to develop a multi-level conceptual model to overcome the crisis of COVID-19 pandemic and promote employee (e.g. workers, nurses and professionals) well-being and organisational sustainability. Design/methodology/approach With a comprehensive literature review, this paper presents five testable propositions and highlights the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on employee well-being and organisational sustainability. Findings The proposed model counsels that organisations need to go beyond the simple application of strategic climate and should enable RL to protect and maintain employee well-being and organisational sustainability. Research limitations/implications The proposed conceptual model is a step forward to not only explore future empirical research but also it will help the health-care policymakers to take responsible initiatives to increase employee well-being and uphold organisational sustainability. Originality/value There is a lack of research regarding the conceptualisation of the COVID 19 pandemic and its impact on health-care employees’ well-being and organisational sustainability. The proposed conceptual model opens and guides a novel research avenue for the alignment of strategic management (as a moderator) and RL on the relationships among the COVID-19 pandemic, employee well-being and organisational sustainability.

AbstractNew medical technologies are often developed and diffused in health care without societal assessments or setting of priorities. This article discusses the driving forces behind the development of new technologies and asks how women as users and providers of health services can gain influence on the process. Technologies used in pregnancy and childbirth are discussed to reveal different interests in their development and use and to discuss the role of industry in the development of new medical technologies in general.
