Many parts of the world are currently facing unprecedented social turmoil. Few understand that most of these “exploding” situations have a biophysical basis in patterns of consumption and the ratio of number of humans to resources available. Most “solutions” proposed are political oppression or, for the lucky, economic development, usually led by conventional economists. However, we believe that, for many regions, conventional economics, certainly alone and perhaps in their entirety, are not up to the job of addressing these crises. We propose a new discipline, Biophysical Economics, that addresses these lacunae and offers a good set of procedures for bringing much more natural science to the discipline of economics. This approach provides a stronger basis for training young people in both economics and heterodox political economy. We will need economists with this new training for a future that appears very different from today. This article outlines the rationales for further developing and teaching Biophysical Economics to demonstrate its utility and applies this economic lens to the economy of Mexico. We finish by providing an example of how a Biophysical Economics curriculum appropriate to analyzing and addressing the Mexican economic context might be developed and taught at the University of Guadalajara. This curriculum could also be adapted to other national, educational and institutional settings.

Why does IR scholarship seem so resistant to travel into other disciplinary spaces? To answer this question, I look at the tendency for scholars within our discipline to talk to the discipline, about the discipline, and for the discipline. We obsess over ‘IR’ and, in doing so, reify IR as a thing. I turn towards Edward Said’s arguments about the worldliness of texts, and how reification shapes how ideas travel. I then provide two illustrations of how scholars have reified IR as a thing: Robert Cox’s approach to critical theory and Amitav Acharya’s call for a ‘Global IR’. In both cases, contrary to expectation, the authors reify IR as a thing, portraying the discipline as distinct from the world. IR is treated as something with agency, ignoring how disciplinary knowledge is produced within worldly institutions. I conclude by looking at three strategies for studying worldly relations in ways that refuse to reify the discipline: showing disloyalty to the discipline, engaging the political economy of higher education, and seeking to decolonise the university. Rather than reifying IR, these strategies help us to engage our scholarly work in a way that prioritises worldly critical engagements within our disciplinary community, and the world.

Universities play an important role in the economic development - knowledge economy. Previous studies proposition that universities significantly contribute to the economic development of the countries. Countries implement policies to efficiently connect higher education and the economy. This study explores the relationships between the university performances measured by the world university rankings and the gross domestic product. We employed the data from the World Bank and two university rankings for a period of 2011-2016. We ran correlation analysis followed by t-test analysis for confirming the linear and non-linear relationship. For robustness, we used chi-squared test for independence. The result shows there is a positive non-linear relationship between university performances and GDP. Indicators for citation and research suggests the quality of the research matters more than the mere research and publications. We may conclude that the “research quality” of the university intensive in researching can contribute indirectly to the economic development of the countries.

The recent widespread interest in problems of economic development, particularly in areas of the world now marked off as "underdeveloped," has emphasized the necessity for further examining the relations between economic and cultural change. The present unorganized body of knowledge dealing with these problems seems to call for a deliberate effort at synthesis in order to arrive at general principles upon which policy and further study can be based. The Research Center in Economic Development and Cultural Change at the University of Chicago was established in an attempt to meet this need.

Rapid advances in technology, information, and transportation have made true what was once just an idea. This was popularized by communication scholar Marshall McLuhan into a reality. These advances have consequently helped develop global citizenship education. With this development comes the realization that young people need not go out of their country to embrace global citizenship. What Journalism and Print Media students at the University of St. La Salle did to heighten their global citizenship education was to use mass and social media to promote selected international events of the United Nations under the project, ―Connecting… Informing… We Are Citizens of the World‖. The feedback of the students show that such approach is an effective tool in making young people aware and be involved in the discussion and action for social justice and peace, which are requisites of global citizenship. This paper hopes to share with other S-L advocates, especially those in Communication programs that they can be vital channels in promoting global citizenship among their students as well as strategies they can use, and consequently, contribute to efforts toward the attainment of international peace, unity amid diversity and development.

The article describes G.N. Tsagolov’s contribution to the development of political and economic theory, first of all, the theory of that new social system which, according to the scientist and his colleagues, should replace capitalism and “real socialism” — “integrated society”. It seems that G.N. Tsagolov’s theoretical developments were based on the methodology of the University School of Political Economy, which distinguished its initial and basic production relations in each system. The nature of Russian social and economic system as oligarchic and bureaucratic capitalism is revealed and the works in which G.N. Tsagolov showed the progressiveness of Chinese, Vietnamese and similar models of economic development are distinguished.


A sense of satisfaction is felt in presenting the seventh edition of the Pretoria Student Law Review. With each successive edition, the Review comes ever closer to being infused into the heritage and culture of the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria. Thereby, cementing into legacy a dialogical space for the expression of young people — some being future lawyers, advocates and academics — a space that challenges the status quo. As a consequence, the Review, as a true creature of education, may bring about positive change in the world.

Lembaga Pengabdian pada Masyarakat (LPM) is a media to bridge the world of education with the community where universities are faced with the problem of how citizens are able to face challenges. Further ahead in the era of globalization with entrepreneurship in the City of South Tangerang, one of the pilot projects that can be used as an opportunity to improve the welfare of the community through entrepreneurship opportunities. Entrepreneurship Counseling for the younger generation is to increase interest in knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship as well as to grow young entrepreneurs. The outreach activities were carried out on October 21-23, 2019 at SMK Sasmita Jaya 1, Kota Tangerang Selatan. The number of participants was 30 young generation and Pamulang University students who have businesses with a variety of different businesses. The method used: lecture method, question and answer and discussion method. The provision of entrepreneurship knowledge contains material on the basics of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial application so that it is expected to provide broader knowledge that can be directly applied in daily life and can change the mindset of young people in entrepreneurship. Further expectations in the future are of course needed by the South Tangerang Regional Government. And there needs to be closer and planned collaboration between the University and the Regional Government to explore the potentials in the region.Keywords: Entrepreneurship; Young Generation


The article is devoted to the goals of sustainable development aimed at achieving economic growth in the world, creating conditions for stimulating the economy in order to expand the boundaries of business activity of young people, achieve the principles of competitiveness and the demand for specialists in the labor market. It is proved that the favorable criteria for economic achievements are the level of education of the population, its mobile susceptibility to critical thinking and self-motivation. Attention is focused on the key importance of education necessary for sustainable development, ensuring the formation of citizens' knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for their active participation in social and economic life.

One of the major challenges for the economic development of Georgia is how to increase the rate of employment and decrease the rate of unemployment. At the current stage of economic and social development of Georgia, it is very important to raise an employment rate and to decrease an unemployment rate. This complex problem is subject to constant changes over time. Therefore, the continuous research in this field is and will stay very important. It is a priority for the economic development of the country to make relevant political steps to decrease unempoyment and increase employment. In order to develop efficient economic policy to decrease unemployment and increase employment, it is important to conduct a thorough market analysis and implement necessary steps to get better results. This article analyzes the current situation in terms of employment and unemployment, provides relevant latest data and describes the existing circumstances based on the analysis of these data. In this article, the focus is made on an important issue affecting unemployment, such as migration processes. Both external and internal migration makes an important impact on the current unemployment rate in the country. Internal migration may lead to positive as well as negative consequences. The article indicates that the consequences are considered to be positive, if the population migration is directed from the regions with the surplus of workforce to the regions with the shortage of workforce, which certainly leads to the lower unemployment rate in the country; on the other hand, the consequences are negative when an excessive number of people are migrating from certain regions, making it impossible to develop these regions in the future; also such migration increases the population in the big cities, which leads to worsened leaving conditions and poor municipal services in these cities. Besides, the article focuses on external migration processes: emigration and immigration as important aspects affecting the unemployment. Both of them have positive and negative consequences. In case of emigration, a positive consequence can be if the surplus of the workforce is leaving the country. This decreases the rate of unemployment; while the negative consequences will entail, if the workforce of employment age, mainly young people, are leaving the country. This creates a problem in the country with a low birth rate and puts even the population replacement under danger. It is well known that migration of the population influences the demographic structure of the population. The migration mostly involves the population of working age, mainly young people. The population increases in regions which are receiving migrants. Namely, the ratio of young population is increasing. In the regions from which people are emigrating, the absolute number of population is decreasing and withing the age structure, the ratio of elderly population is increasing. Besides, the article reviews a negative impact inflicted by COVID-19, declared as the world pandemic by the World Health Orgrnization, on different social and economic aspects of the country. The article also discusses the main challenges of the labor market – the high rate of unemployment, the employment structure and a low productivity of self-employed. For the past few years, there have been drastic demographic changes, which results in a decreased workforce. These demographic changes are caused by people leaving the country as well as by the unstable birth rates. Besides, “brain drain” during the short period of time leads to the loss of intellectual asset of the country. However, if these people come back, it may have a very positive impact on the labor market: it will increase the number of qualified people in the country and it will have a positive influence on the economy of the country and its growth. Sustainable education requires the proper usage of technological devices. Among these is the smartphone, which is used by millions of young people around the world in today’s society. The objective of this study was to understand the smartphone usage profile of Spanish and Italian university students. It also aimed to identify possible problematic uses, and the differences in smartphone use (or abuse) between the participating subjects. The study was descriptive and comparative, with the intentional sampling of N = 1412 subjects studying at the education faculties of the University of Alicante (UA) and the Suor Orsola Benincasa University (UNISOB). A previously-validated questionnaire with 27 items was employed during the 2019–20 academic year. The data was analysed using the SPSS 25 programme. Descriptive and inferential analyses were carried out. The results obtained after the analysis of the data indicated that, of the four possible user types—occasional, habitual, at risk, and problematic—more than half of the sample identified themselves as habitual users. It can be concluded that there are significant differences between the universities: the UA students exhibited more problematic use than the UNISOB students. It is therefore necessary to prepare training programmes that are designed to avert problematic behaviours related to smartphone use.
