The development of cardiovascular diseases is characterized by changes in the blood lipid profile, among other factors, which are closely related to the population's eating habits. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the effects of diets with different lipid sources on the lipid profile of Wistar rats. Forty male and adult rats were used, divided into 5 groups (control - 7% soybean oil, CA - 7% canola oil, CO - 7% coconut oil, SO - 7% sunflower oil and LD - 7% lard) and fed normolipidic diets for 30 days. The variables food consumption, weight gain, weight of organs and adipose tissues, blood glucose, lipid profile and cardiovascular risk indicators in the experimental groups were evaluated in the study. The results showed strong compatibility between the CA and control groups, which did not differ in all variables, however, divergences were identified for the other groups. The LD group consumed 11% more than the control group and together with the CO group, gained the least weight. For the variables weight of organs and adipose tissues, glycemia and cardiovascular risk indicators, no significant differences were observed. Among the lipid profile parameters, the levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL of animals that consumed sunflower oil and lard were significantly reduced compared to those of animals that consumed soybean oil. For the LDL fraction, all groups were similar to the control group, except for the LD group, which had a 58% lower content. The effects observed in the CO, SO and LD groups seem to result from a deficiency of essential fatty acids, since the respective sources do not meet the requirements of these nutrients.

The purpose of this study was to prove that the administration of Jati (Guazuma ulmifolia Lamk) leaves extract improves the lipid profile of dyslipidemic male Wistar rats. Subjects were 20 rats (Rattus norvegicus), male, Wistar strain, dyslipidemia (total cholesterol ≥ 200 mg dl-1), aged 2 months old, weighing 180-200 grams. The control group (10 rats) were given a placebo of 3 ml aquadest (P0) and the treatment group was given extracts of the Jati (Guazuma ulmifolia Lamk) leaves extract of 25 mg kg-1 BW (P1). Before and after treatment for 14 days, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and HDL levels were examined. The results showed that in the P0 group there were no changes in total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and HDL levels (p>0.05), whereas the P1 group experienced a decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL levels (p<0.05) and an increase in HDL levels (p<0.05). The results of this study indicated that the Jati leaves extract was effective to improve the lipid profile of dyslipidemic rats. It was necessary to compare the effectiveness of Jati leaves extract with synthetic dyslipidemia drugs used in the community such as statin.

High blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and obesity are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. With regard to the significant role of a healthy diet in the prevention and even treatment of diseases together with the high cost and side effects of drugs, finding foods effective in the treatment of metabolic disorders has been widely considered. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of oxymel – an Iranian traditional syrup with vinegar base – on cardiovascular risk indicators in obese and overweight people. Candidates were selected based on a set of inclusion criteria and were divided into two groups of control and test. The control group received 250 cc of water, while the test group received 250 cc water containing 30 cc of the oxymel for 30 days. Anthropometric and biochemical indicators were measured at the beginning and end of the study. The results showed that there were no significant changes in the body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist to hip ratio, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and blood glucose level. However, weight (P = 0.053) and cholesterol (P = 0.083) decreased relatively significantly in the test group compared to the control group. This study shows that consumption of oxymel has positive cardiovascular effects such as lowering the blood cholesterol level and can contribute to weight loss; however, studies with a larger sample size are recommended.

Abstract: Squid ink consists of DHI, DHICA, and 2-carboxyl indole that improve lipid profile and remove foam cells in blood vessel walls. This study was aimed to analyze the effect of squid ink on atherosclerosis-induced Wistar rats. This was an experimental study. We used randomized controlled trial with pre-post test design for lipid profile assessment and randomized post-test only control design for blood vessel evaluation (foam cells in layers of coronary artery). Samples were 27 Wistar rats, divided into three groups; all were atherosclerosis-induced with initial injection of 0.006mg iv adrenalin on day 1, followed by standard diet and egg yolk until day 30. Squid ink extract was given to group P1 and P2 on days 15-30 in different doses, but not to control group. Data were analyzed by using Saphiro-Wilk test and paired t-test. The results showed that P2 group had decreased means of total cholesterol (-33.62 mg/dl), triglyceride (-28.00 mg/dl), and LDL cholesterol (-28.16 mg/dl), but an increased mean of HDL cholesterol (11.60 mg/dl). There were decreased numbers of foam cells in the layers of coronary arteries of P1 and P2 group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Squid ink extract could lower total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol levels, and increase HDL cholesterol level. Moreover, it could remove foam cells from the layers of coronary arteries.Keywords: squid ink, atherosclerosis, lipid profile, foam cells Asbtrak: Tinta cumi memiliki kandungan DHI, DHICA, dan 2-carboxyl indole yang dapat memperbaiki profil lipid dan mengurangi sel busa pembuluh darah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian ekstrak tinta cumi terhadap tikus yang diinduksi aterosklerosis. Jenis penelitian ialah eksperimental dengan randomized controlled with pre-post test design untuk penilaian profil lipid dan post test only design untuk penilaian pembuluh darah (sel busa dalam dinding arteri koronaria). Sampel terdiri dari 27 tikus Wistar jantan, dibagi secara random menjadi tiga kelompok; kesemuanya diberi induksi aterosklerosis dengan injeksi inisial adrenalin 0,006 mg iv pada hari ke-1, dilanjutkan diet standar dan diet kuning telur sampai hari ke-30. Tikus kelompok kontrol tidak diberikan ekstrak tinta cumi; tikus kelompok perlakuan 1 dan perlakuan 2 diberikan tambahan ekstrak tinta cumi pada hari ke 16 sampai hari ke 30 dengan dosis yang berbeda. Analisis data dengan uji Saphiro-Wilk dan uji paired t-test. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan penurunan rerata setelah perlakuan pada kelompok P2 ialah kolesterol total (-33,62 mg/dl), trigliserida (-28,00 mg/dl), dan kolesterol LDL (-28,16 mg/dl), serta peningkatan rerata kolesterol HDL (11,60 mg/dl). Terdapat penurunan jumlah sel busa kelompok perlakuan P1 dan P2 dibandingkan kelompok kontrol. Simpulan: Pemberian ekstrak tinta cumi menurunkan kadar kolesterol total, trigliserida dan kolesterol LDL, meningkatkan kadar kolesterol HDL, serta menurunkan jumlah sel busa dalam dinding arteri koronaria.Kata kunci: tinta cumi, aterosklerosis, profil lipid, sel busa

Background: Flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, and vitamin-C contained in the Red Dragon fruit’s skin have a positive impact on glycemic control and lipid oxidation. This study aimed to determine the effect of Red Dragon fruit’s skin extract on reducing the fasting blood glucose (FBG) and improving the lipid profile of Wistar rats with diabetes and dyslipidemia. Methods: A randomized pre-test post-test control group experimental study was done on 22 male Wistar rats, aged 2-3 months that suffered from diabetes and dyslipidemia. Subjects were divided into the control group (given 2cc distilled water + 9 mg metformin) and the treatment group (given 160 mg red dragon fruit’s skin extract + 9 mg metformin) for 14 days. FBG and lipid profile measurements were done before and after the treatment. Data were analyzed using the compare mean test. Results: There was no significant mean difference of GDP between groups before (p=0.414) and after treatment (p=0.125), total cholesterol between groups before (p = 0.572) and after treatment (p=0.361), triglycerides between groups before (p=0.073) and after treatment (p=0.111). There was a significant mean difference of HDL between groups before (p=0.003) and after treatment (p=0.047), LDL between groups before (p=0.006) and after treatment (p=0.043). Although there were significant mean differences in HDL and LDL between groups before and after treatment, the pre-post treatment of HDL and LDL mean differences showed no significant mean difference (p=0.328 and p=0.704 consecutively). Conclusion: Red Dragon fruit’s skin extract treatment did not significantly reduce the mean FBG and lipid profile levels.

Background Rasbora agrotynea (local name : Seluang ) is a fish native to Sumatera, Malaya and Borneo. This fish has a potential as a local wisdom for supplementation of omega 3 and omega 6. In Sumatera, Seluang fish was used as traditional food.   Aim of Study Aim of this study to explore the efficacy of seluang fish oil in body weight, lipid profile, adiponectin and leptin level in Wistar Rats-Induced High Fat Diet   Methods This study was an experimental study , pre-post test with control group design. The sample in this study was  30 male rats, 8 weeks old, weight 150-200 gram. Rats were given high fat diet and seluang fish oil  at dose of 0,1 , 0,2  and 0,4 mL/200 gr BW/day for 2 weeks. Seluang fish oil was extracted by distilation methods. The results of this study were assayed by SPSS 18.   Results Seluang fish oil 0,4 mL/200 gr BW  was more potent to reduce body weight gain, triglyseride level,  leptin and increase adiponectin level than seluang fish oil 0,1 mL/200 gr BW, 0,2 mL/200 gr BW, negative control and positive control.   Conclusion Seluang fish oil had a potention to reduce body weight, triglyceride, leptin and increase adiponectin level.   Keywords: Seluang fish Oil – body weight- triglyserida – leptin - adiponectin

Aging is associated with various physiological, pathological and psychosocial alterations. This study evaluates the benefits of Curcumin by assessing reproductive aging indices and ovarian health in Wistar rats. Laboratory bred adult rats selected for the experiment. After 12 months of follow-up, the animals were grouped into Normal control rats, Sham control group, Curcumin-1(100 mg/kg body weight), Curcumin-2(200 mg/kg body weight) and Curcumin-3 (400 mg/kg body weight). For the duration of six months Curcumin dosage was administered. The experimental parameters included estrous cycle and histological evaluation of ovarian follicles. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The percentage of primordial follicles was significantly more (p<0.001) in all the groups when compared with other types of follicles. Prolonged increase (p=0.0001) in the Diestrus phase in animals treated with different dosages of Curcumin. The current study concludes that Curcumin, an active component of Curcuma longa contributes to the anti-aging properties.

The study was aimed to evaluate cardiovascular risk parameters, body mass index (BMI) centiles for sex and age, and body fat percentage using the electric bioimpedance method in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). 30 children with JIA participated in the study. A control group included 20 children. Patients were well matched for the age and sex. The body mass and body fat percentage were determined using the segmental body composition analyser; the BMI centiles were determined. All patients had the following parameters determined: lipid profile, hsCRP, homocysteine, and IL-6. The intima media thickness (IMT) was measured. Patients with JIA had significantly lower body weight, BMI, and the BMI centile compared to the control group. The IL-6 levels were significantly higher in patients with JIA compared to the control group. There were no differences between two groups with regard to the lipid profile, % content of the fat tissue, homocysteine levels, hsCRP, and IMT. Further studies are necessary to search for reasons for lower BMI and BMI centile in children with JIA and to attempt to answer the question of whether lower BMI increases the cardiovascular risk in these patients, similarly as in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of tamoxifen (Tx) and its vehicle, soybean oil (SO), during the critical period of hypothalamic sexual differentiation in newborn male rats, regarding gonadal histomorphology during adulthood. The animals were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 5 each). An hour after birth, one group was treated subcutaneously with 200 μg of Tx, using commercial SO (20 uL) as a vehicle; another group was treated with only 20 μL of SO; the control group received no treatment. All rats were weighed and sacrificed by cervical dislocation on day 90 post-treatment. Testicles were removed, weighed and processed for histological evaluation. The single administration of Tx and/or SO during the critical period of sexual differentiation of the hypothalamus permanently altered testicular histomorphology, spermatogenesis, and body weight in adulthood. Alterations included vacuolization and reduction in the number of spermatogonia and Sertoli cells. The administration of Tx reduced the testicular weight, the diameter and area of the seminiferous tubules, and the height of the germinal epithelium, and increased the intertubular space. Soybean oil by itself reduced the number of spermatocytes and spermatids more than Tx did. There was no effect on the number of Leydig cells. The possibility that soybean oil can act as an endocrine disruptor deserves greater attention and opens the possibility for the development of new methods of pest control.

Background Phrynium maximum (local name : lerek ) is a plant native to Sumatera, Malaya and Borneo. This plants have a potential as a local wisdom for therapeutics. In Sumatera, Lerek was used as traditional treatment for fever, diarrhea, diabetics and for wound healing.   Aim of Study Aim of this study to explore the efficacy of lerek fruits extract in body weight, lipid profile and leptin level in Wistar Rats-Induced High Fat Diet   Methods This study was an experimental study , pre-post test with control group design. The sample in this study was  30 male rats, 8 weeks old, weight 150-200 gram. Rats were given high fat diet and lerek fruits extract  at dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kgBW/day for 2 weeks. Lerek fruits was extracted by infusion methods. The results of this study were assayed by SPSS 18.   Results Lerek fruit extract 100 mg/kgBW  was more potent to reduce body weight gain, triglyseride level and leptin level than lerek fruit extract 50 mg/kgBW, 200 mg.kgBW, negative control and positive control.   Conclusion Lerek fruit extracts had a potention to reduce body weight, triglyceride and leptin level.   Keywords: Lerek fruit extract – body weight- triglyserida - leptin
