PROFESSIONALLY-ORIENTED TEACHING AS A FACTOR OF MOTIVATION TO LEARNING ENGLISH IN NON-LINGUISTIC HIGH SCHOOLS (FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF DIFFERENT DIDACTIVE METHODS USING ON ENGI NEERING FACULTY)

This article is devoted to the features and benefits of a professionally-oriented approach to teaching a foreign language in non-linguistic high schools on the example of engineering education. According to the latest standards of higher education (FSES 3++), students must have sufficient knowledge of a foreign language for business communication in oral and written forms. However, teachers of high schools face a number of difficulties in the formation of a foreign language communicative competence offuture engineers, namely: a constant decrease of a number offoreign language practical classes in a curriculum of a high school and a weak motivation of students. In our opinion, a professionally-oriented approach to teaching helps to solve these problems and make the process of learning a foreign language more intensive, focused and effective. That is, now, the development of strategies, methodological models and tools for teaching English, with a focus on professional communication, is an actual task for an English teacher at the University. This article presents some methods and techniques that stimulate students of engineering faculty to professionally oriented communication in English. Much attention is paid to both active teaching methods used during practical English classes, and individual work, which allows students to get more useful information and skills within the practical classes given, and also allows students to develop the need for individual knowledge acquisition and comprehension, thereby providing the increased interest of communication in a foreign language and increasing motivation to learn a foreign language.

The way the communicative method functions in a professionally oriented approach to teaching Ukrainian foreign students of medical specialties has been little studied, and that determines the relevance of this topic. It has been found that there is a controversy in scientific thought concerning the role of both communicative and grammar components of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language. Moreover, modern textbooks do not provide sufficient exercises to develop professional communication. The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of the communicative method in a professionally oriented approach to teaching Ukrainian (as a foreign language), and to develop appropriate exercises and tasks. The conclusion is that in the process of learning to communicate in a foreign language, it is important for students to present and master grammatical material. Samples of tasks and exercises aimed at developing the communicative and grammar competence of foreign medical students in professional communication are presented.

The goals of the article's authors are: to justify the need to teach students the skills of professional communication in a foreign language on the basis of a text-oriented approach; to demonstrate the possibility of conducting this type of training in reference to the discourse analysis of a particular institutional area. Achievement of the goals is ensured by a set of the following theoretical, empirical, and experimental. Analysis, synthesis, a generalization of scientific and methodological works on the research topic; discourse analysis (method) of institutional communication; methods for collecting and accumulating data; experiential learning, implementation into practice. The article presents the results of the study: teaching professional communication through the use of professional texts with due regard for the discourse analysis of the corresponding communicative situation is grounded; the significance of the text-oriented approach in teaching international students the language of their university major is estimated; ways of developing the respective speech competencies are exemplified. The results presented in this article could be instantaneously applied in the learning process and eventually in the job search. The conclusions would be demanded in theoretical courses on the methodology of teaching foreign languages, special courses on the university major's language, etc.

The article analyzes the role of the educational game as a means of organizing the speech activity of medical students in English. The authors of the article emphasize the need to use active teaching methods in the educational process while learning English. It has been established that games in English classes can be divided into the following categories: games aimed at mastering new vocabulary; games aimed at grammatical material consolidation; communication games aimed at developing students’ monologs and dialogs. Methods, goals and tasks for forming a communicative model are highlighted. Examples of interaction between a teacher and a student are analyzed. It is noted that the conduct of professional games has a multi-faceted approach and is carried out according to a certain model. Systematic and purposeful use of games as a method of teaching English to medical students contributes to the effective learning in the educational process.

The article is devoted to the problem of multicultural education at the university, considering the personality-oriented approach to teaching. Here are the results of the implementation of the program aimed at increasing the educational motivation of students. The program and research are being implemented in the pedagogical areas of training full-time students of the Kaluga State University named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky. The discipline “Pedagogy” and its modules have, according to the authors, ample opportunities for the implementation of the idea of multicultural education in a higher educational institution, taking into account personality-oriented technologies and taking into account the multinational student environment of the university. The authors propose to strengthen the multicultural aspect of the content of the discipline under consideration by introducing changes into the program that will significantly increase the motivation of students to learn. The implementation of this approach is to develop the content of the discipline “Pedagogy” considering the multicultural student environment of the university.

The following paper discusses the actual task of modern technical specialist training: getting him/her ready to communicate professionally in a foreign language. Practice requests are naturally reflected in the development of curricula and programs of higher professional education. The author demonstrates the urgency of the task in connection with the constantly changing foreign language professional communication, especially computer-mediated part of it. The author identifies two main approaches to the organization of studies at the university: changing the structure, content, methods of the course Foreign Language and the development of new courses of the curriculum. Within the framework of the second approach, the process of designing an educational and methodical complex for a professional communication course on the basis of a process approach is considered in some detail. The paper emphasizes the importance of using professional skills of prospective specialists to increase the effectiveness of the educational process, in particular, the development of copyright audio and video materials. The workshop for audio engineers, developed by the author of the paper, is successfully used in the educational process of Samara State Institute of Culture.


The article under consideration present some review of the present days textbooks created by Ukrainian specialists for teaching English in Maritime higher educational establishments. The authors attempt to analyze the existing manuals keeping in mind the needs of the future maritime engineers and the requirements of the International Maritime Organization, teaching methods are also meant. It is stressed in the article that the approach to teaching maritime engineers differ a lot from that of teaching other maritime specialists because besides general English communicative skills and maritime English they are supposed to be aware of technical terminology quite well. We make a quick review of the problems the teacher faces when working with the engineer students. The enumeration of the topics are supposed to be tackled upon in English classes is done. We touch upon the absence of one National English Standard for engine room department personal and discuss the problems it arises. It is underlined the achievements of Ukrainian Maritime English specialists are significant: the number of the textbooks and other teaching means in the field are getting larger every year what is more important their quality is getting higher as well. We have chosen these two series of textbooks for our review as they demonstrate complex approach to teaching the language and if accompanied with some extra tasks and listening and video activities they are the best one to use as basic for maritime engineers. Among the most authorized and widely used textbooks are the series of works by O. Bogomolov: there are 3 textbooks worked out for different levels. Some other series of textbooks we would like to mention are works of teachers who work in Kherson Maritime State Academy. Other series of textbooks under review are created by the group of the authors headed by V. Kudryavtseva. As it has been underlined in the preface to these textbooks, the purpose of the manuals is the development of professional communication skills of maritime engineers.

The article examines higher education at the stage of transformational processes of transition to the global educational space. The importance of the discipline of a foreign language, as a means of intercultural, scientific and academic interaction in a given space is emphasized. The issues of the introduction of information and communication technologies in the process of teaching a foreign language are considered. The main regulatory documents in this area are considered. The definition of information and communication technologies as applied to the process of teaching a foreign language is given. Educational online platforms for teaching professional communication in a foreign language have been analyzed. The importance of interaction between the university and secondary school in the formation of a consistent trajectory of teaching a foreign language and professional communication in a foreign language is emphasized. Problems on the way of digitalization of the educational process are identified and solutions are proposed.

In the modern socio-political, economic and socio-cultural context of the world development, there is every reason to consider the proficiency of English by future engineers, potential participants in intercultural professional communication, as a necessary condition for their future professional activities. Despite the existing problems of foreign language training of technical specialists at the university, it is necessary to modernize and improve the teaching technologies of a foreign language, guided by the requirements of the social order.
