This paper mainly discusses the application of Newmark's theories of communicative and semantic translation in automobile advertisement translation. After analyzing the translation examples of automobile advertisement text, title and trademark, the following conclusions are naturally drawn. The combination of communicative and semantic translation can guide translation practice more effectively. Semantic translation theory is preferred for automobile manual translation, while communicative translation theory is more suitable for automobile brand and slogan translation. Therefore, in order to achieve the intended effect of automobile advertisement, it is better to combine semantic translation with communicative translation in automobile advertisement translation.

Translating political speeches poses its own challenges and difficulties, with one of the reasons being the fact that political speeches have their own unique features. Translation of political speech is also arguably still underresearched in translation studies. It is for this reason that this paper seeks to investigate translation method(s) that can be used to translate political speeches. The data source of this paper is the English translation
of an inaugural address of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo produced by a professional Australian translator. The speech was translated from Indonesian as the source language (SL) to English as the target language (TL). Appropriate translation methods are obviously needed to produce a higher quality political speech translation. This research applies the concept of translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988). This is a qualitative research with a comparative conceptual method. Results show that the
translation methods adopted when translating the inaugural address are semantic and communicative translation methods. Semantic translation method is the most dominant one, followed by communicative translation method. Semantic translation method was used to translate the body part of the speech, while communicative translation method was used to translate the opening part and the closing part of the speech. These two
methods are considered appropriate for translating this political speech.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the strategies used in translating scientific terminology. It is an attempt to explore how scientific English terms are translated in the Arabic versions of two international magazines; namely, the famous Scientific American (Arabic Edition) and Nature (Arabic Edition). The evidence provided by these magazines is expected to explain to what extent semantic and communicative translation is crucial in rendering scientific terms into Arabic. It also classifies the different types of semantic translation.

In this study, we compare and contrast the titles of English pop songs with those of Vietnamese translated versions based on Newmark’s model. 65 titles in the original and 65 titles in the target language were chosen to compare and contrast with the purpose of seeing how many titles are retained and how many titles are novel in terms of content. To reach its aim, the study used two main methods including comparison and description, which were based on Newmark’s model. In addition, statistical and analysis methods were also applied to examining the titles. The research findings showed that in general 51 titles are retained in the target language through 5 translation methods: literal translation, semantic translation, communicative translation, free translation and adaption. 10 titles do not carry any characteristics in comparison with the original. The study also revealed that translators used mainly free translation to convert the titles from English into Vietnamese.

Aerial ChinaⅠ- Jiangxi has been widely accepted by foreign audiences. In this documentary, there are many culture-loaded words with Jiangxi cultural characteristics. We all know that the translation of Chinese culturally-loaded words has long been a tricky problem. Take the translation of culture loaded words in Aerial ChinaⅠ- Jiangxi as an example, this paper discusses how Newmark's communicative translation and semantic translation theory are applied to the translation of Chinese culture loaded words. It is considered that semantic translation and communicative translation are not completely opposite but complement each other. Good translation works are usually the perfect combination of the two. In order to help translators better translate culture loaded words and achieve the real purpose of cross-cultural communication.

Abstract Both phonemic transliteration and semantic translation have been widely used in translating the names of characters in literary works. Nonetheless, discussion as to which of them is more appropriate continues. An investigation of the English translation of characters’ names in the Chinese classics Hong Lou Meng has suggested that either phonemic transliteration or semantic translation is reluctantly accompanied by some modification from the originals due to cultural and literary contextual constraints. Many of the past studies have reviewed the cultural context for explaining and considering the merits of each, though the literary angle has sometimes been disregarded. The case study of the translation by D. Hawkes has provided insight into that cultural context was not the only one that mediated the translation of names, instead the literary context acted in much the same way.
