Abstract Use of body mass index (BMI) to assess the nutritional status of adolescents requires many resources, especially for country-level assessment. This study aimed to determine the relationship between BMI and mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) among adolescent males and females in India and to examine whether MUAC effectively represents the nutritional status of adolescents. The study utilized anthropometric measurement data collected by India’s National Family Health Survey-4 (2015–16). The weighted sample for analysis included 91,315 female and 14,893 male adolescents. The BMI and MUAC measurements showed a positive correlation in both female and male adolescents. Using BMI-for-age Z-score classifications, 12.7% of the adolescents were undernourished. Using MUAC (in cm) as per NACS (Nutrition Assessment, Counselling, and Support) guidelines and Mramba et al. (2017) classified 22.9% and 3.7% of the adolescents as undernourished respectively. Finally, using the MUAC-for-age Z-score classification, 98.4% of adolescents were determined to be normal and 1.7% undernourished. Sensitivity and specificity tests of the MUAC cut-offs, in comparison with BMI cut-offs, showed that all three MUAC cut-off classifications had high specificity (NACS cut-off: 81.3%; Mramba et al. cut-off (cm): 97.7%; Mramba et al. cut-off (Z-score): 99.1%). The NACS cut-off had moderately high sensitivity (52.2%) but the Mramba et al. cut-offs had low sensitivity (13.3% for the centimetre cut-off and 6.6% for the Z-score cut-off). Sensitivity and specificity tests proved the relationship between BMI and MUAC, and that MUAC represents adolescent nutritional status with considerable efficiency. With further research, it may be established that MUAC is a better and promising measure of adolescent nutrition, having the advantage of needing fewer resources for data collection. The MUAC has the potential to offer a simple and low-resource alternative to BMI to assess nutritional status among adolescents in poor countries.

Introduction: Pre-conception women are potential mothers or vulnerable groups who need special attention. The less of nutrients Intake than necessary can lead to nutritional problems such as Chronic Energy Deficiencyand nutritional anemia that have an impact on the next phase of life such as the risk of giving birth to babies with low birth weight (LBW), babies stunting, and growth disruption and development of the fetus / baby during pregnancy or after that. Objective: To analyze the relationship between diet quality, chronic energy malnutrition status with anemia in the bride. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 70 subjects who were brides aged 16-30 years. Selection of subjects with consecutive sampling method. Dietary quality data was measured through the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and Diet Quality Index - International (DQI-I) forms, SEZ status assessed from body mass index (BMI) and upper arm circumference (LiLA). Anemia status was measured from hemoglobin levels, MCV, MCH, and MCHC. To examine the relationship between diet quality, chronic energy malnutrition, and anemia using a linear regression test. Results: The subject aged 16-30 years, and 41.4% are still <20 years old. A total of 10 subjects (14.3%) belonged to Chronic Energy Deficiency. Haemoglobin level measurements showed there were 8 subjects (11.4%) who had low Hb levels, and 4 of them had anemia with microcytic hypychromic type which was characterized by low MCV, MCH and MCHC values. Based on the calculation of intake was known that 55 subjects (78.6%) had a low quality diet. This study showed no relationship between diet quality and anemia, but the sub-components of diet quality were adequacy of protein intake (p = 0.007), iron intake (p = 0.009) and upper arm circumference (p = 0.018) indicating a significant relationship with anemia (hemoglobin level) in the bride. Conclusion: the less protein and iron intake and lower upper arm circumference associated with a decrease in the bride's hemoglobin level

AbstractTuberculosis(TB) resulting the decreasing of nutrient intake and malabsorbsi as well as changing the metabolism of the body. The wasthing are decreased protein energy. Malnutrition on TB affects the prognosis of the treatment and death rates. The increase TNF α will inhibit the enzyme activity of Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL) in the fat tissue. LPL enzyme plays a role in cleavage process of triglycerides. This research was to analyze the relationship of triglycerides and nutrition status on the client with tuberculosis. The design was cross-sectional approach. The respondents were gathered from 25 newly TB patients. The analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment correlation. Abstract Background One of the easiest and effective ways of predicting under nutrition is to use the Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) and the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). The dietary diversity score is a qualitative measure of food consumption reflecting an individual’s access to different food items and therefore is a proxy indicator of the nutritional status. The aim of the study was to assess whether the DDS and MUAC can be used to assess the nutritional status of pregnant women attending antenatal. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted at Chilenje level I Hospital in a township located in Lusaka city, Lusaka province. The study employed quantitative methods to collect and analyse data on the dietary patterns and if this can be used to assess the nutritional status of individuals 24 hours preceding the survey. Health facilities were selected using random sampling method and systematic sampling method was used to select a sample of 299 pregnant women. An interview schedule was used to collect data. Logistic regression was used to establish associations between DDS and MUAC. Results In this study, 44% of the women were in the lowest dietary diversity category, which indicates inadequate nutrient intake, 31% in the medium category and 24% in the high intake. Maternal weight was associated with a 0.08 cm increase in MUAC (95% CI; 0.74 – 0.93) and this was statistically significant. Marital status and age (95% CI; 0.83 – 0.93) were significantly associated with an increase in MUAC in the univariate analysis but when adjusted for other confounders this was not significant (95% CI; 0.81 – 1.00). Consumption of organ meat was associated with a 0.21cm increase in MUAC (95% CI; 0.04 - 0.97). Conclusion The study results indicated that 44% of the women had inadequate nutrient intake, indicating that the dietary diversity score can be used to predict malnutrition in pregnant women. The mid upper was negatively correlated with the 24hour dietary diversity score implying that we might not rely on this measurement to assess the nutritional status. Key words Dietary Diversity Score, Malnutrition, Mid Upper Arm Circumference, Pregnant women, Antenatal.

Objectives: To determine the relationship of Neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio (NLR) values with the benign and malignant thyroid nodules. Methods: In this cross-sectional clinical study conducted from September 1st 2020 to February 28th 2021, we included 216 patients who underwent thyroidectomy at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi Pakistan. After thyroidectomy specimens were sent for pathologic examination. Patients were divided into two categories based on histopathologic results; Malignant nodule and benign nodules. Data of complete blood count was obtained from the pre-operative lab investigations and NLR was calculated. Results: There were 42 (26%) men, and 116 (74%) women of 158 in the BTN group, 18 (31%) men, and 40 (69%) women of 58 in the MTN group. The mean age of 48±6 years in the BTN group as well as 47 ±8 years in the MTN group (p-value 0.32). The mean neutrophil count in the BTN group was 4.26±2.8 versus 4.41±2.2 (x 1000/mm3) the malignance thyroid group (p-value = 0.71). The mean lymphocyte count was 3.81±0.9 (x 1000/mm3) in the BTN group and 3.61±1.2 (x 1000/mm3) in the malignance group (p-value = 0.18). The mean NLR value for the benign thyroid nodular group was 1.19±2.2 and 1.22±1.8 in the malignant thyroid nodular group (p-value = 0.92). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, we concluded that preoperative period biochemistry laboratory results such as neutrophils count, lymphocyte count, and NLR value don’t provide enough evidence to differentiate between benign and malignant thyroid carcinoma. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.37.7.4503 How to cite this:Haider N, Mahmood Z, Khalid F, Razzak SA.
