The aim of this study was to determine the fishing productivity of large pelagic fisheries using handline. This research was conducted in July until September 2012. This study examines the fishing productivity of handling with operated by a fisherman in Majene district, West Sulawesi. Fishing activity utilizing FADs as a fishing ground. Fishing Productivity was obtained from the weight ratio of the amount of catches and duration of fishing time. Fishing productivity is determined for each type of fish catches, namely skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus Pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), and mackerel tuna (Auxis thazard). The proportion of the total catches of skipjack tuna showed greater than other fish species. The relationship between fishing productivity with the time fishing is declining with increasing duration of time fishing. Cluster analysis showed that there are two clusters of fishing productivity for 23 fishing activity. Fishing ground with the largest production was in the FADs in 118031'44,8''E and 118°34'16.0"E, and 04030'25.6"S and 118029'37,3''BT. Large pelagic fish species observed is the skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), and tongkol (Auxis hazard). Fishing productivity shows the downward trend and the fishing ground for the production of tuna, mackerel and yellowfin tuna fish highest in FADs at position 04026’06,3”S and 118031’44,8’’E ; 04030’25.6”S and 118029’37,3’’E.

Keywords: FADs, fishing productivity, handline, large pelagic, majene

Purse seine is one of dominant fishing gear used to catch pelagic species include skipjack and yellowfin tuna, two commercial species in Indonesia’s marine waters. This research aimed to analyze characteristic of purse seine fishery focusing on skipjack and yellowfin tuna within FMA 572 and 573. All the catch-effort data was collected from 18 fishing ports during the period of 2016-2018. All the vessels (purse seiners) were known to be actively fished within FMA 572 and 573. Proportion of mature and immature fish were calculated by comparing the fish length with its length at first maturity (Lm). The results showed that purse seine was a significantly gear to catch skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna with proportion of 95% in FMA 572, and 66% in FMA 573, respectively. Most of the catch were dominated by immature fish with proportion of 67% for skipjack tuna and 94% for yellowfin tuna. The study concluded that purse seine is not recommended to exploit yellowfin tuna. Futhermore for targeting skipjack tuna, mesh-size of the net need to be in creased, allowing immature fish to escape from the gear that maintain sustainability.

Abstract Cendrawasih Bay and the Pacific Ocean are known as potential fishing areas and as fish spawning locations in Fisheries Management Area 717. Larval dispersal in the waters is strongly influenced by oceanographic parameters. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between oceanographic parameters and fish larval dispersal in FMA 717. This research was conducted using KR Bawal Putih III in November 2019. A number of 42 stations were determined for observation. Environmental parameters included temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a, turbidity, and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), were measured using SBE 19 plus V2 CTD while pelagic fish larvae were collected using a bonggo net. Analysis of the correlation of oceanographic parameters with pelagic fish larvae abundance and spatial distribution was calculated using PCA (Principal Component Analysis) statistical analysis. The results showed that the pelagic fish larvae was influenced by temperature, salinity, PAR, chlorophyll-a, turbidity, and DO. Temperature and salinity have a direct interaction to the abundance of pelagic fish larvae.

Abstract Yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares is one of the major species of tuna caught in the Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 573 of the Indian Ocean. Its production contributed to 35.83% of the total production of tuna in 2013. The study was conducted to assess the population dynamics of this species in FMA 573, based on length-frequency data collected in 2013-2017, and was analysed using FiSAT II software. The results obtained show length-weight relationship of W = 0.000052 FL2.78, negative allometric growth and growth equation of Lt = 194.25 (1-e-0.51 (t + 0.1889)). The length at first capture was estimated at 140 cm FL. Recruitment season occurs between July and September, with a peak in August. The rate of total mortality (Z) was 2.32 yr-1, including natural mortality rate (M) of 0.69 yr-1 and fishing mortality rate (F) of 1.63 yr-1. The exploitation rates of yellowfin tuna were estimated to be 0.70, indicating that it has exceeded the optimum exploitation rate (E = 0.5) and that overexploitation had occurred. There is an obvious need for consistent monitoring and surveillance of fishing fleet, type and size of fishing gear, as well as the fish size and quantity of the catch.

Abstract The purse seine is the dominant fishing gear operating at the Tumumpa Fishing Port with a vessel of >90%. The purse seines that have developed are large pelagic targets, with the main catch targets being skipjack, mackerel tuna, and tuna. Tuna, mackerel tuna and skipjack are important commodities for fisheries in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the characteristics of purse seine fishing gear and its catch in the Sulawesi Sea. Data collection was carried out for two years from 2019-2020 at Tumumpa Fishery Port. Indications for the use of fish resources are calculated by comparing the length-at-first-capture (Lc) with the length-at-first-mature (Lm). The results showed that purse seines are very dominant in exploiting large pelagic resources (skipjack, mackerel tuna and tuna) with the proportion reaching 78%, small pelagic (21% scads and 1% other fish). The large pelagic fishing season using the purse seine vessel occurs in May – November, with 2 peak seasons in July and September. While the small pelagic occurs in May – September, with the peak occurring in July. The size when the frigate tuna was first caught was at a fork length of 25.15 cm (Lc) and Lm in a size of 28.52 cm for females and 28.29 cm for males. Meanwhile, the first scads was caught (Lc) at a length of 21.4 cm with the length-at-first-mature (Lm) being 20 cm for the female and 19 cm for the male. Based on this analysis, it was shown that the purse seines is a selective fishing gear for small pelagic fish but not selective for large pelagic fish.

Fish resources within Indonesian waters (i.e. teritorial and archipelagic waters) including Indonesian Economic Exclusive Zone if under sustainably management it would contribute a significant role as a source of nation welfare. Scientific advice on stock status and its exploitation rate are required as an input to support an apropriate fisheries management. Generally, fish resources in these waters are dominated by two main fish groups such as small pelagic fish by 36 % and large pelagic fish by 25 %. Indonesia fish resource in 2015 was estimated for 9,931 million tons/year with comprises of 1,992 million ton/year (20 %) in fisheries management area (FMA) 718 (Arafura sea), 1,228 million/year (12 %) in FMA 572 (western of Sumatera of Indian ocean and Sunda strait) and 1,143 million tons/year (12 %) in FMA 711 (Karimata strait, Natuna sea, and south China sea). Most of fish resources (49 %) were in the status of overfishing with red indicator, folowed by fully-exploited state(37 %) in yellow indicator and only 14 % in the moderate state (green indicator). Among all nine fish groups, the overfishing state (up to 63%) is recorded from group of shrimps (Penaidae), lobster, and crabs. The management options in these prespective is urgently suggested to reduce fishing effort at the level of f.opt (fishing optimum) for overfishing fish groups. Whilts possibly to increase effort for fish groups with fully and moderate exploited state at the level off opt.
