In recent decades, there is a sprut in the growth of the construction industry. Aggregates are one of the main ingredients for making concrete. Depletion of natural resources of sand and the effect of mass production of cement on sustainable environment, need studies on the use of alternative materials. On the other hand, dumping of wastes from the industries are piling up resulting in the pollution of the environment. By considering the above facts, severe studies are focused on partial replacement of river sand with alternatives like copper slag, steel slag, quarry dust, etc., The outcome of these studies shows that the alternate materials enlarge the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. The optimum dose of alternate materials to replacement of sand is evaluated. In this paper, technical papers published by researchers are studied, discussed and compared

Concrete is an important construction material widely used in the construction industry nowadays. It is blended material consisting of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water. Generally the use of river sand as fine aggregate in our country is very widespread in industry. This paper mainly focuses on the study of strength properties of concrete in which river sand is replaced with sea sand as fine aggregate. In addition to it, Quarry Dust when added gains strength. Different mix proportions was replaced partially in 5%, 10%, 15% by Sea sand and Quarry dust. The strength of concrete for various mix proportions are carried out and tested for 14, 28, 56 days of curing. From the results obtained, with the replacement of river sand by sea sand along with well graded quarry dust upto to 15% increases the strength of concrete.

River sand is a non-renewable source of material which we have been utilizing it in construction for years. In this paper replacement of natural river sand by various by-products and waste materials obtained from different sources have been taken for the study to compare their properties with that of the river sand. The alternative materials considered for the study were M-sand, Eco sand, Copper slag, crushed glass, quarry dust, foundry sand, biomedical waste ash. Some of the materials have been already tested and the optimum percentage of usage in concrete has been determined. But the comparison of their properties with that of the river sand with 100% replacement have been carried out for the study in order to check their potential to act as fine aggregate in concrete or construction industry. The tests performed were sieve analysis, specific gravity, moisture contentand compressive strength of cement mortar cubes.The test results obtained would help us in projecting a newer dimension in use of these materials in structural elements too. If it’s proven successful, thenwe would be able to implement it in large scale which would help us to revolutionize the construction industry by economizing the construction cost and enabling us to conserve the natural resources.

The numerous demanding application of concrete is not readily met with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) alone. To meet up the demand and as well as ensured the green concrete durability, it has becomes necessary to incorporate mineral additions with the best combination of others by-product as replacement to improve the performance without jeopardizing the strength of the concrete. In the construction industry, OPC cement and river sand are used as important building material making it scarce and limited. Whereas, as for the cement is well known as the biggest culprits for emitting carbon dioxide (CO2). Hence, partial replacement of cement becomes a necessity as well as natural sand in concrete by waste material or by-product without compromising the quality of the end product. Partial replacement with Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag (GGBS), Fly Ash (PFA), Silica Fumes (SILICA) incorporates with 100% of Quarry Dust (QD) as sand replacement. The usage of 100% QD with OPC+PFA+SILICA (Mix 2) produced more durable concrete with good temperature control and better furnishing than with 100% river. In addition to the cost effect benefit, the reduction in depletion of river sand, addressing environment and sustainability issues, it is a valuable contribution in creating a green concrete.

This article reports on the possibilities of using selected alternative materials like hemp fibres, MgO-cement, recycled concrete, fly ash and steel slag as binder or filler replacement in composite materials in civil engineering production. These binder or filler substitutes were mixed into composites and their compressive strength was tested. The paper is divided into four parts providing the results of experiments. In first part strength parameters of lightweight composites based on natural fibres (hemp hurds) and alternative binder (MgO-cement) are presented. Compressive strength values of concrete samples with partial replacement of cement with mechanochemically activated coal fly ash are given. The third and forth part is aimed to utilization of recycled concrete and steel slag as a natural aggregate replacement in concrete mixture for purpose of structural concrete and surface roads.


Conventionally used cement –a primary binder also a necessitate element in producing concrete rates first in the construction industry. Production of conventional cement requires a greater skill and is energy intensive. The usage of waste materials in the production of concrete and reduction in cement content was only the possible alternative in the past decade. Associated risks with the production of Ordinary Portland Cement are well known. A greener aided with a natural friendly claim can be made only with the usage of the waste materials and reduction in evolving respiration gas to the atmosphere. Almost all works are carried out using source material fly ash, with fine aggregate and coarse aggregate. Concrete plays a vital role in the construction industry and on the other hand, river sand; one of the essential material has become very expensive which is a scarce material. Depletion of sand is a hectic issue due to increased usage of sand in construction. No other replacement materials such as quarry rock dust is not concentrated in casting geopolymer specimens. Even though in some research papers the replacement materials are added only in partial replacement without aiming on 100% replacement. Many researches mainly focus towards test results of GPC specimens using steel fibers, glass fibers. But the study related to natural fibers and hybrid fibers are found scarce. The main part of this work aimed at characterizing the engineering strength properties of geopolymer concrete by 100% replacement of fine aggregate with quarry rock dust. Hence, combination of flyash and quarry rock dust in GPC have been considered for evaluating the mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete. Also, investigation focuses on incorporation of three different fibers namely polypropylene fibers(PF), coir fibers(CF) and hybrid fibers(HF) in different percentage of proportions such as 0.5%,1%,and 1.5% to determine the maximum strength properties of GPC.

AbstractConcrete is the most widely used construction material in the world. Over ten billion tons of concrete are being produced each year resulting in exhaustion of natural materials and an enormous carbon footprint. One of the primary goals of concrete technology today is to reduce the use of Portland cement and natural fine aggregates by partially replacing them with various waste materials and by-products of industrial processes. The paper summarizes the results of a study where the partial replacement of river sand and Portland cement was successfully applied using steel slag aggregate, silica fume and glass waste.

The use of crushed quarry dust as a partial replacement of river sand in concrete production was investigated in this study. This is expedient as quarry dust can be available at some locations with insufficient river sand for construction purposes. The use of quarry dust is also in concrete is also a measure necessary for improvement of concrete strength. River sand was replaced with quarry dust for different mix designs of concrete for 0% to 25% replacement levels with 5% intervals. The physical properties of river sand and quarry dust were tested and reported and the workability as well as compressive strengths of the concrete mixtures were also tested. It was observed that the slump values increased with increase in percentage replacement of sand with quarry dust. The compressive strength of cubes at 28 day curing for control mixture of 1:3:6 at 0% partial replacement of river sand with quarry dust was 12.6N/mm2 but compressive strengths of 21.5 N/mm2 and 26.0 N/mm2 were gotten for 1:2:4 concrete and 1:1.5:3 concrete respectively. As the quarry dust content increased to 25%, the 28day compressive strength increased to 13.58 N/mm2 and 21.57 N/mm2 for the 1:3:6 and 1:2:4 mixes respectively. Compressive strength values decreased to a value of 25.72N/mm2 for the 1:1.5:3 concrete mix. The maximum compressive strength values were reached at 20% quarry dust content at the age of 28 days for the three concrete grades investigated. The increase in compressive strength with inclusion of quarry dust was attributed to the higher specific gravity of quarry dust above river sand. The compressive strength of quarry dust concrete continued to increase with age for all the percentages of quarry dust contents. Quarry dust was recommended as a suitable partial replacement for river bed sand in concrete production.

Increased development in the field of construction with the use of sand, stones etc. depletes the natural resources and thus resulted in the scarcity of construction materials. Furthermore, generation of waste from several industries such as steel slag, copper slag, blast furnace slag etc. are being dumped in the nearby landfills leading to disposal problems. The scarcity of construction materials necessitated the utilization of suitable alternative materials with equivalent physical and chemical characteristics. This paper investigates the suitability of copper slag (CS) as a substitute to natural fine aggregate (NFA) in the concrete. The concrete mixes are prepared with 0%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70% and 100% of copper slag at 0.45 w/c ratio. The behaviour of CS in the concrete was assessed by hardened properties such as compression, tension and flexure at 7, 14, 28 and 90 days and durability properties such as water absorption, porosity and chloride ion penetration at 56 days. Results indicate that the replacement of CS beyond 50% affects properties of the concrete; however increased curing improved the properties of the concrete at higher replacement levels. Characterization studies such as XRD and SEM was performed to examine the effect of CS on the properties of the concrete.

Abstract: In this developing era concrete and cement mortar are widely used by the construction industry, with this development. Large number of industrial wastes are generated and if these wastes are not properly used it will create severe problems, keeping the environment in mind, concrete engineers are trying to find some alternative materials which will not only replaces the cement content but also improves strength of concrete. As we also know that during the manufacturing of cement large amount of Co2 is released into the environment, but if we use such material that will replace the quantity of cement content therefore indirectly, we are contributing towards the prevention of our planet from global warming and other pollutions. Also, in this research work the Rice Husk Ash is used. the rice husk ash obtained from the rice processing units, by adding this product with concrete, not only replaces the cement content but also increases the strength of concrete like compressive strength etc. The Rice husk ash was incorporated with concrete with varying percentages of 2.5% ,5% ,7.5%, & 10%. the proper codal precautions were followed during the manufacture of concrete cubes of 150x150x150mm. it was concluded that the strength of concrete increased by incorporated the rice husk ash.
