SELF CONCEPT AND LIFE MEANINGFULNESS AMONG ADOLESCENTS IN ORPHANAGE Abstract This study aimed to empirically determine the relationship between self-concept and meaningfulness of life among adolescent girls in the orphanage Sunu Ngesti Tomo Jepara. Governments rarely aim at altering the way children view themselves. Yet, governments, culture, and social norms shape the social settings children find themselves in (i.e., the amount of ability stratification in the education system). Reviewing sociological, economic, and psychological literature we construct a theory that states that any macro influence which leads children to be schooled with peers of similar ability levels (ability stratification) will bias children’s academic self-concepts via larger Big-Fish-Little-Pond effects (the negative effect of school average achievement on academic self-concept). Applying meta-analysis to estimates derived from four cycles of the Trends in International Math and Science Study we test the hypothesis that the relationship between achievement stratification and the effect of school average achievement on academic self-concept will be large and negative. Findings strongly support our hypothesis (r < -.50).

Franquismo. It puts into question a certain view of Francoism that remains fixed, particularly in the political debate, despite numerous basic research that for years has challenged the Dictatorship's "friendly face." It also examines the relationship between what we call ”ordinary resistance” - the workers' politically oriented and organized opposition - and the instruments of law-and-order enforcement that the Dictatorship used to prosecute the social protests. The labour movement had a leading role in those, along with citizen movements (students, neighbours and professional school movements.) The article goes on to reflect on the fate of the anti-Francoism narrative as an ethical and civil legacy. Finally, it highlights the importance of historical archives to exercise the citizen's rights that is the knowledge of the past. Keywords: Spanish Dictatorship. Francoism. Anti-Francoism. Labor Movement. Archives. Public Memory. This study examines spontaneous social self-representations in two different cultures (the Netherlands and Greece) and among adults and early adolescents. A distinction between three levels of the social self is made: the relational self, the communal self, and the collective self. Supporting the notion of the general primacy of the relational self the findings show that the relational self is the most prominent and important one in both cultures and among both age groups. Yet, there is a cultural difference in the cognitive representation of the relational self. In the Dutch context, participants tended to understand their relational self in terms of a personalized or dyadic mode of connection (pair-wise mode). In contrast, in Greece participants understood their relational self in terms of units of significant others (group-wise mode). Implications for the relationship between culture and the self-concept are discussed.

Having children affects many aspects of people's lives. However, it remains unclear to what degree the challenges that come along with having children are associated with parents’ personality development. We addressed this question in two studies by investigating the relationship between parenting challenges and personality development in mothers of newborns (Study 1, N = 556) and the reciprocal associations between (mastering) parenting challenges and personality development in parents of adolescents (Study 2, N = 548 mothers and 460 fathers). In Study 1, we found the stress of having a newborn baby to be associated with declines in maternal Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Emotional Stability. Parenting challenges were also related to personality development in parents of adolescent children in Study 2, with parent–child conflict being reciprocally associated with decreases in Conscientiousness and Emotional Stability. Mastering parenting challenges in the form of high parenting self–efficacy, on the other hand, was found to be associated with increases in Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Emotional Stability, and vice versa. In sum, our results suggest that mastering the challenges associated with the social role of parenthood is one of the mechanisms underlying personality development in young and middle adulthood. This study examined the relationship between cognitive development, as assessed by Piagetian tasks, and social personality development, as assessed by a social orientation scale, representing an individual's life plan. It was hypothesized that concrete operational subjects relative to formal-operational subjects would have a less well developed life plan. Two Piagetian tasks and the Social Orientation Scale were administered to 72 senior high school students. Social Orientation Scale is both reliable and valid. Significant differences existed between the 44 concrete, 23 transitional, and 5 formal subjects in scores on the Social Orientation Scale, as expected.
