The present paper attempted to determine the factors that might affect turnover intention. Although the research participants consisted of 234 employees of PT Petrosea, only samples from 152 employees were used. The samples were derived by using the simple random sampling method and collected through a questionnaire. The collected data was then analyzed based on the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with an application software called Lisrell. The results showed that the following variables, adversity quotient, job satisfaction, and job motivation, did not have a significant effect on turnover intention. However, the regression equation showed that the higher scores of adversity quotient, job satisfaction, and job motivation would make turnover intention lower. Thus, to prevent staff or labor turnover, a company is advised to select those prospective employees that have a higher score of adversity quotient since it has a significant effect on job satisfaction and motivation. This might result in decreasing turnover intention.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the multi-level relationship between people-related total quality management (TQM) practices and employee job satisfaction. The authors draw upon organizational climate theory to hypothesize that TQM is related to job satisfaction at the individual employee level, as well as at the organizational level in the form of shared perceptions of TQM practices in the workplace. Design/methodology/approach Multi-level modelling was used to test the study hypotheses. The sample was drawn from 201 employees working in 23 organizations in Australia. Findings The findings show that people-related TQM practices are positively related to job satisfaction at both individual and organizational levels, with a stronger effect on employee attitudes observed at the organizational level. Research limitations/implications The statistically significant multi-level relationship between people-related TQM practices and job satisfaction extends the findings of previous studies conducted only at the individual level; thus, supporting the sustainability of TQM as a management principle at a company-wide level. Practical implications The findings broadly support the implementation of people-related TQM practices as part of a strategy of creating a “high performance” climate in organizations, which in turn, will likely to positively affect both individual and organizational performance. Social implications From a wider social perspective, the implementation of TQM practices as a company-wide initiative could facilitate greater corporate social responsibility of the organization. Such practices as training, involving, and empowering employees can promote social commitment by valuing employees as one important stakeholder. Originality/value This is the first empirical study to the best of the author’s knowledge that uses multi-level modelling to examine the relationship between TQM practices and employee attitudes such as job satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a conceptual path model to explain the effects of a set of personal and work-related independent variables and the dependent variables of situational stress, job stress and job motivation on job satisfaction among critical care nurses. DESIGN: A prospective descriptive study using a conceptual path model. SETTING: Nine hospitals licensed for at least 250 beds in the northeastern, northwestern, northcentral, and southern regions of Florida. SAMPLE: Three hundred female critical care nurses employed in the nine hospitals who had worked full-time for at least 3 months. MEASUREMENTS: Subjects were administered a demographic and work survey questionnaire, Daily Hassles Instrument, Psychological Hardiness Test and the Job Diagnostic Inventory. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A conceptual path model was constructed to illustrate the effects of a set of personal and work-related independent variables and the dependent variables of situational stress, job stress and job motivation on job satisfaction. MAIN RESULTS: Path analysis of a job satisfaction model resulted in a causal progression of situational stress leading to either job stress or job motivation, both affecting job satisfaction. The results showed that job stress, job motivation, job expectations, meaningful work, knowledge of work results, commitment to career, health difficulties, task identity, supervision, dealing with others at work, opportunity for advancement, pay and job security had a significant effect on job satisfaction. CONCLUSION: Thirteen variables had a significant effect on job satisfaction and explained 63% of the variance. The four most significant effects on job satisfaction were opportunities for advancement, meaningfulness of work, pay and supervision. Commitment to the career, task identity and job security had a modest effect on job satisfaction.
