The high population growth rate results in an increase in the volume of waste. So far, most people still view waste as useless waste, not as a resource that needs to be utilized. According to SNI 19-3964-1994, municipal solid waste generation is 2 – 2,5 Liters/person/day or 0,4 – 0,5 kg/person/day, small town waste generation is 1,5 – 2 Liters/person/day or 0,3 – 0,4 kg/person/day, the waste generation for large/ metroppolitan cities is greater that 3 Liters/person/day (Center for Resettlement Research an Developmen, 2010). With the reduce, reuse, recycle (3R) program, the amount of waste generation can be reduced. To implement 3R based waste management, the waste reduction process begins with waste sorting. Sorting handling activities according to the type and nature. Based in data from the Balikpapan City Environmental Service, the averange waste production from January 2018 to May 2018 reached 344,73 tons/day. The program for sorting and processing waste from sources is still limited, in Gunung Bahagia Village the success rate has only reached 60%. Waste sorting based on characteristics, the importance of providing understanding and application of waste sorting to the community as a waste producer. Waste sorting is the first step taken to reduce the level of waste in the TPA. Waste sorting should be carried out from waste produciing sources. Waste sorting is carried out based on waste characteristics. Garbage has the characteristics of being easily biogefradable or what is called organic waste, it takes a long tim (years, decades, hundreds of years) to decompose or what is called inorganic waste, waste of hazardous and toxic materials. By sorting waste based on cheracteristics, waste processing can run effectively and efficiently, has econimic value and environmental sustainability. Organic waste has economic value from processing in the form of compost. Inorganic waste has economic value, because this type of waste can be reused and recycled. For hazardous and toxic waste materials, the sorting can reduce environmentals pollution, considering that this type of waste is very easy to react.

<p>Waste management in the Dasan Agung Market in Mataram City still uses conventional patterns. This pattern is not in line with the NTB Province policy that launched the concept of zero waste in 2019-2023. One approach that can support the program is the 3R method of waste management. This study aims to develop a waste management plan using the 3R approach. The method used in this study is the observation method, which is observing the current conditions and measuring the generation and composition of waste. The technique of determining the sample and measurement time and the procedure refers to SNI-19-3964-1995. The results showed that the amount of solid waste generation in Dasan Agung Market was 2.7 m<sup>3</sup> / day and the weight of solid waste was 467 kg / day. Waste composition was obtained by organic waste 52.60% and inorganic waste 47.40%. TPS 3R is planned with an area of 110 m<sup>2</sup>, namely 74 m<sup>2</sup> for composting area and 36 m<sup>2</sup> for sorting and handling inorganic waste, and residual waste. The composting system implemented is using the drum method with a capacity of 100 liters, a total of 307 pieces. Waste Management Planning using the 3R Approach is capable of handling 80% of the waste, and 20% of the residue is disposed of in the landfill.</p>

Gondosuli Village is located in Muntilan District, Magelang Regency, and has a high population growth rate, economy, and development, all of which contribute to increased community activities. This causes waste production to continue to rise; additionally, there are issues with waste management from upstream to downstream, namely a lack of waste reduction, which leads to waste accumulation in landfills. This is due to a lack of proper management, which consists of only collection, disposal, and transportation. As a result, the community service is carried out by planning for a solid waste management system capable of reducing waste from upstream. The cultivation of maggots from organic waste is an upstream system approach that can be used to solve the waste problem. BSF maggot cultivation has several advantages, including the production of pre-puppa, which can be used as a source of protein for animal feed, and aiding in the resolution of the community's organic waste processing problem. The concept of integrated waste management (TPS 3R) can be combined with a waste bank to reduce waste disposal in the TPA while also providing economic value.

Moreover urban waste can be seen as a cultural problem because it affects various aspects of life, and the impact on urban waste management system nowadays are not effective and efficient yet. The reason for conducting this research is the emergence of the informal sector phenomena of urban waste management that can contribute to reduce the volume of urban waste production. The purpose of this research is to find out the informal sector strategy in urban waste management, especially inorganic waste. The researchers used qualitative research to explain the phenomenon as the focus of research. The result of research is 3M phenomenon, that is derived from Indonesian words (Mengubah = Changing, Mengurangi = Reducing, Manfaat = Benefit), in the management of urban inorganic waste. The explanation are; Mengubah: turning waste into economic value; Mengurangi: If the economic value of the urban waste volumes increases, the volume of urban waste will eventually be reduced; and Manfaat: the benefits obtained are management cultivating empowerment, reducing the burden of the landfill volume, being closer to inorganic zero waste condition. Suggestions are as follows: [a] development of management towards go-green, [b] urban waste management based on predictable community empowerment will be more effective and efficient in the future.

The paper presents the results of a 1998 study of the solid waste generation within the greater Muscat City area. The recent data were compared with the available data from the last 10 years to assess the solid waste problems within the area. Five operating landfills were used as the data collection points. It appeared that through the last decade, the solid waste generation rate has increased sharply. However, the rate of waste production stabilized to 750 – 800 ton/day during the last three years of the 1990s. The rate amounts to 1.5 kg/person/day. Overall municipal waste volume decreased through the years while the amounts generated from private sources such as industries and commercial centers increased during the same period. This is due to the fact that the Sultanate of Oman is developing very fast with increasing industrial, commercial and residential activities. About 80 % of the solid wastes is organic materials. This amount is high when compared to figures found in western countries. The data indicate that about 40 percent of the solid wastes are composed of recoverable materials. The concerned authorities should encourage the growth of industries to be involved in recycling business. Such activities will reduce the solid waste discharge in landfills and increase nearly 1.6 folds the expected life of existing landfills. A survey of the operating landfills indicate that the operational efficiency may be substantially improved by incorporating measures that deal with problems of gas production and leachate movements. The paper includes a detailed discussion of the problem and makes recommendations for possible future actions.

Abstract Nowadays waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) generation is increasing due to the increase in the number of users and the development of electronic products. In Indonesia, there are no specific regulations about WEEE even though it is identified as hazardous and toxic waste. This study aims to predict the WEEE generation from the most used and replaced electronic products by citizens of Bandung City. The data is collected by surveying 400 families in Bandung City. Based on the survey results, there are three types of electronic products that are most used and replaced by citizens of Bandung City, which are mobile phones, laptops and televisions. The Delay Model is modified by replacing the lifespan variable with end-of-life to project the mobile phones, laptops and televisions waste generation in Bandung City. The purpose of this modification is to adjust the pattern of electronic products used in developing countries. The projection results state that Bandung City will generate 0.61 tons/day of mobile phones, 8.66 tons/day of laptops and 3.16 tons/day of televisions at the end of 2020. Based on the results of the projection, WEEE management and recycling is important which can reduce WEEE disposal and increase the economic value of WEEE.

Konsep pengelolaan sampah telah lama berubah dari pemusnahan atau pembuangan menjadi pemanfaatan. Namun konsep ini belum diikuti dengan langkah nyata oleh pemerintah. Kepedulian terhadap kelestarian lingkungan telah mendorong beberapa kelompok masyarakat, lembaga atau institusi untuk bergerak aktif dalam pemanfaatan sampah. Universitas Andalas sebagai lembaga pendidikan tinggi terkemuka di Pulau Sumatera sudah saatnya mengambil peran aktif dalam melakukan pengelolaan sampah yang berwawasan lingkungan. Timbulan sampah yang cukup besar yaitu 28 m3/hari pada tahun 2012, yang diproyeksikan akan menjadi 34 m3/hari atau 9 ton/hari pada tahun 2017, menawarkan potensi cukup besar untuk dimanfaatkan. Pada tahun proyeksi 2017 dari total timbulan sampah, 26,6 % (2,4 ton/h) adalah sampah makanan, 9,8 % (0,9 ton/h) adalah sampah penyapuan taman/jalan, 30,0 % (2,7 ton/h) adalah sampah plastik, 25,3 % (2,3 ton/h) adalah sampah kertas, 1,5 % (0,1 ton/h) adalah sampah kaleng, logam dan besi dan 6,9 % (0,6 ton/h) adalah sampah lain-lain (tekstil, karet, kayu, kaca dll). Dari total sampah makanan dan penyapuan halaman/jalan, 33,7 % berpotensi untuk menghasilkan kompos sekitar 1,2 ton/hari, 2,1 % (0,2 ton/h) dapat dimanfaatkan untuk proses biogas dan sisanya 0,5 % (0,05 ton/h) ditimbun di TPA. Sampah plastik dan kertas sebesar 55,3 % dapat dimanfaatkan kembali atau dijual ke PT. Semen Padang sebagai tambahan bahan bakar unit kiln. Dari 1,5 % sampah kaleng, logam dan besi, 1,3 % dapat dimanfaatkan kembali atau dijual ke pihak ketiga sedangkan sisanya yang hanya sebesar 0,02 ton/h dibuang ke TPA Air Dingin. Selanjutnya, sisa timbulan sampah sebesar 6,9 % yang berupa sampah tekstil, karet, kayu, kaca dan lain-lain dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan bakar alternatif pada kiln PT. Semen Padang. Jika konsep ini dapat dilaksanakan, maka Universitas Andalas dianggap mampu melakukan pemanfaatan sampah hingga 99,3 %. Environmental sustainability awareness has been stimulating some community groups and institutions to actively involve in waste utilization. Andalas University as a leading higher education institution in Sumatera Island must give active contributions in solid waste management for environmental sustainability. Solid waste generation of 28 m3/day, which is projected to be 34 m3/day or 9 ton/day in 2017, offers huge enough potency for utilization. From the total solid waste generation in 2017, 26.6 % (2.4 ton/day) is food waste, 9.8 % (0.9 ton/day) is garden/road waste, 30.0 % (2.7 ton/day) is plastic waste, 25.3 % (2.3 ton/day) is paper waste, 1.5 % (0.1 ton/day) can, metal and iron waste and 6.9 % (0.6 ton/day) is micellaneous waste (textile, rubber, wood, glass etc). 33.7 % of food waste and garden/road waste may be recycled to compost around 1.2 ton/day, 2.1 % (0.2 ton/day) may be utilized for biogas and the rest 0.5 % (0.05 ton/day) is sent to TPA Air Dingin. Plastic waste and paper wich is 55.5 %, may be used for additional fuel for kiln unit of PT. Semen Padang. From 1.5 % can, metal and iron waste, 1.3 % may be reused or sold to third party while the reset (only 0.02 ton/day) must be disposed to TPA Air Dingin. Furthermore, the rest of waste generation account for 6.9 % composed of textile, rubber, kayu, kaca dll may be used as alternative fuel for kiln PT.Semen Padang. If this concept is practiced, then the Andalas University is considered capable of utilizing their waste up to 99.3 %.Keyword: Utilization solid waste, environmental sustainability, management of solid waste

The composting of organic waste is an alternative waste management technique that can be used to control the increase in waste generation. The objective of this study was to identify a type of effective microbes (EMs) that accelerate the composting process. The study also determined the suitability of using a KompostKu rotary composter along with additional materials such as coconut husks and Takakura EMs for composting food waste from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and determines the economic value of the compost. In order to select the most efficient EMs, Takakura and fruit waste EMs were prepared and used during the composting of both food and yard waste using a composter barrel. Four important parameters were examined to ensure the effectiveness of the process, including temperature, moisture content, potential of hydrogen (pH), and carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio. The experimental results revealed that Takakura EMs were superior to the fruit waste EMs in accelerating the composting process. The use of coconut husks as an absorbing agent with Takakura EMs also accelerated the composting process, requiring approximately four weeks to fully decompose the food waste. It was estimated that the composting of food and landscape waste at the UKM could annually generate compost products worth over 30,660 Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). The use of Takakura EMs enhanced and accelerated the composting process and provided high-quality compost

Abstract The increase in waste generation in Gunung Putri Subdistrict, Bogor Regency, causes an increased burden at the Landfill Site (TPA). One of the efforts to reduce the burden of Landfill Site (TPA) is to maximize the Waste Processing Site (TPS) by applying the circular economy concept. This study aims to analyze the generation, composition, and potential of waste processing to have economic value. The sampling method used is a combination of purposive sampling and stratified random sampling. The results showed that with a population of 304,672 people and a waste generation rate of 0.48 kg/person/day, it is estimated that the waste generation in Gunung Putri District is 147,156.58 kg/day. The waste material in Gunung Putri Subdistrict consists of 52.86% organic waste components and 47.14% non-organic waste. Organic waste is dominated by food waste by 50.38%. From the results of the characteristic test of the waste, it is known that the water content is 63.16%, the ash content is 29%, the C/N ratio is 7.03%, and the calorific value of the waste is 1.924 kcal/kg by considering the amount of generation, composition, and characteristics of waste, which are then used with standards or criteria for waste processing technology from various references. Organic waste in Gunung Putri Subdistrict has good potential to be processed using the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) and organic waste processing with Peuyeumisasi Method (Biodrying) and recycling for non-organic waste.

Typical of most developing world cities, the City of Johannesburg, South Africa, faces many waste management challenges. One of which is a lack of awareness of, and compliance with, waste management legislation, recycling and composting by the general public. Thus, the city has to deal with high levels of solid waste generation and subsequent pressure on its landfill sites. The city also has to adhere to various pieces of waste management legislation, with recycling and composting being two essential elements thereof. This study outlines a commercial composting initiative designed by the municipality of Johannesburg to redirect organic green waste from landfill sites to a compost production plant. The study found that although the Panorama Commercial Composting Plant is reducing the amount of solid organic waste disposed of in the city’s landfills, better planning could increase the amount of green organic waste thus diverted. Furthermore, the adoption of a centralized, mechanized system has significantly hampered the generation of employment opportunities, while simultaneously forcing operational costs up. Finally, the lack of a coherent marketing and branding strategy has restricted compost sales. Thus, the Panorama Commercial Composting Plant is currently not recouping its costs nor generating the number of work opportunities it could. Some recommendations to rectify this are then made

The study was conducted in rural areas of Mymensingh district during March to April 2007. Seventy two households were interviewed and respondents were grouped in three categories: low, medium and high income group to identify the respondent’s socio-economic condition, total waste production, processing, utilization and preservation methods of waste. The total organic waste production was unequally proportionate areas among low, medium and high income group. Waste generation was also depending on family size and family income. Smaller family generated less amount of waste while larger family generated huge wastes. High income contributes to generate more wastes. The characteristics such as family size and family income of the respondents had positive and significant relationships with their waste generation. Waste use as many purpose such as manure, fuel, landfill etc. A significant amount of waste generated from domestic animal, specially cowdung have been using as fuel purpose. Only 2.78% respondents used cowdung as compost in their crop field due to less number of domestic animals and scarcity of fuel wood. But 27.78% respondents were not used it for any of those purposes. Besides these ashes, kitchen waste, feed wastage etc. are used as manure and landfill purpose. Respondents had no systematic planning in all spheres of production, processing and utilization of organic waste. The respondents were disposing their solid waste at various times.
