The quality of a child can be judged from the process of growth and development. The process of growth and development is the result of the interaction of genetic factors and environmental factors. Genetic/hereditary factors are factors related to genes originating from the father and mother, while environmental factors include the biological, physical, psychological, and social environment. Growth and development have increased rapidly at an early age, from 0 to 5 years. This period is often referred to as the "Golden Age" phase. Vitamin A is one of the vitamins that functions for the development and performance of various organs of the body, such as the eyes, skin, reproductive organs, and the immune system. To prevent vitamin A deficiency in toddlers, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia conducts a program of providing vitamin A through posyandu. Based on the various solutions to the activities mentioned above, the output targets to be achieved in this program are formulated, including scientific publications and increasing parental knowledge. Types of counseling with participatory methods in Monitoring Growth and Giving Vitamin A to Toddlers. The activity was carried out in July at the Posyandu Kenanga, Mampir Village, Kec. Cileungsi, Bogor Regency. The results of this series of community service activities and parents turned out to be quite satisfactory, both in terms of mastery of the material that had been given. Participants' understanding was seen during the discussion on growth and development and giving Vitamin A questions and answers. It can be concluded that the counseling went well, parents were enthusiastic about the number of participants who attended and hoped that this activity could continue

The current use of serum retinol concentrations as a measurement of subclinical vitamin A deficiency is unsatisfactory for many reasons. The best technique available for vitamin A status assessment in humans is the measurement of total body pool size. Pool size is measured by the administration of retinol labelled with stable isotopes of carbon or hydrogen that are safe for human subjects, with subsequent measurement of the dilution of the labelled retinol within the body pool. However, the isotope techniques are time-consuming, technically challenging, and relatively expensive. There is also a need to assess different types of tracers and doses, and to establish clear guidelines for the use and interpretation of this method in different populations. Field-friendly improvements are desirable to encourage the application of this technique in developing countries where the need is greatest for monitoring the risk of vitamin A deficiency, the effectiveness of public health interventions, and the potential of hypervitaminosis due to combined supplement and fortification programs. These techniques should be applied to validate other less technical methods of assessing vitamin A deficiency. Another area of public health relevance for this technique is to understand the bioconversion of β-carotene to vitamin A, and its relation to existing vitamin A status, for future dietary diversification programs.

Low birth weight (LBW) is a common problem in Bangladesh associated with poor survival, growth and development. Among many factors, Vitamin A deficiency is thought to be associated with LBW. To investigate this relation a study was conducted at Maternity and Child Health Training Institute at Azimpur, Dhaka during January 2000 - July 2002. One hundred pregnant women (38-40 wks of gestation) with their newborns were included. Weights of the newborns were recorded within 20 - 30 minutes of delivery. Vitamin A level was estimated in maternal and cord serum. The newborns having weight <2500gm showed Vitamin A level of 49.40 ± 3.04μg/dl in their maternal serum while those weighing ≥2500gm had a Vitamin A level of 60.18 ± 2.03μg/dl in their maternal serum. A trend of increased maternal serum Vitamin A level was observed with increasing birth weight. Thus neonates with higher birth weights were found to be associated with higher values of maternal serum Vitamin A, though not being statistically significant. Ibrahim Med. Coll. Climate is an active, powerful factor that can have a powerful therapeutic effect. Climatotherapy is prescribed for the purpose of General strengthening effects on the body, to stimulate its defenses, increase non-specific resistance, especially in chronic or sluggish pathological processes. The effect of climate therapy is manifested in the body's responses to environmental factors, the main condition of which is the use of physiologically based methods of dosing climate procedures. The bioclimatic station (BCS) of the resort of Yevpatoria carries out meteorological observations of medical orientation and their dosing. The creation of a modern center of climatotherapy, as a scientific-clinical Department of medical climatology on the basis of the BCS will allow to organize a single service on introduction of modern methods of climatotherapy in Evpatoria and the Republic of Crimea, improve the quality of the holiday of climateprotection and effectiveness of climatotherapy.

Physical development (RF) is one of the main indicators of health status, largely due to hereditary factors, depends on the living conditions and upbringing, social and environmental factors [1,2,3,4]. This is especially important for children and adolescents in the process of growth and development. At the present stage of scientific research of RF in pediatrics, there is a transition from the analysis of average RF indicators to a personalized assessment [5,6].

BACKGROUND: Diet induced vitamin A deficiency is less commonly seen in otherwise healthy adults, due to large store of vitamin A in the body. Night blindness is the commonest manifestation of vitamin A deficiency in adults, whereas Keratomalacia is a rare manifestation.CASE REPORT: A 27 years old Ethiopian woman came to Jimma University Department of Ohthalmology with a compliant of protrusion of the globe content of both eyes within a week, after having redness and fear of light of both eyes for 2 months. She was a mother of twins and had low socioeconomic status. On general examination, she was cachectic with enlarged parotid glands. On ocular examination, she was bilaterally blind and had dry ocularsurface. There was bilaterally melted cornea with prolapsed uveal tissue. After several investigations she was diagnosed as bilateral Keratomalacia (stage X3B) secondary to diet induced vitamin A deficiency. She was supplemented with vitamin A and other nutritional supplementation. Topical lubricating drops and ointments were administered. Finally, conjunctival flap was done to preserve the globe.CONCLUSION: Although it is rare, treating physicians should be aware of the occurrence of Keratomalacia in adults which is potentially blinding. Early recognition and treatment of vitamin A deficiency at the stage of night blindness is essential in reducing blindness caused by Keratomalacia.

A.Kata kunci: Defisiensi vitamin A, anak sekolah, minyak fortifikasiAbstractVitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains as one of significant public health problems in Indonesia. Around 50% of under five children are suffering from subclinical VAD. Deficiency of vitamin A will affect several important role in the body, such as immune system, vision, reproductive system and cell differentiation. Therefore, guarding Indonesian children to be free from VAD is crucial for their quality as Human Resources. We assessed the impact of the consumption of vitamin A fortified cooking oil on the improvement of vitamin A and hemoglobin status among school children in urban slum area in Makassar City. The study was an intervention design Before-After. Healthy school children 7-10 years were selected from schools and de-wormed before the intervention. Serum retinol and hemoglobin was measured at baseline and at 3 months after. Fortified oil was made available through distribution at shops and accompanied with social marketing. Eventhough overall there was no change in VAD prevalence, the VAD prevalence is lower among children who consumedfortified oil ³12 weeks (26.6%) compared to those who consumed <12 weeks (42%). Prevalence of anemia decreased from 21.8% to 11.6%. We recommended that fortified oil is made mandatory.Key words: Vitamin A deficiency, school children, fortified oil

Infertility is widespread for all species of animals and causes significant economic losses to livestock due to the loss and shortage of offspring, their reduced viability and, consequently, increased morbidity and mortality. Alimentary-deficiency factors are among the commonest causes of infertility, from which A-vitamin deficiency should be singled out. The precursor of vitamin A in the body is carotene, which is an unstable compound which is easily destroyed even under the influence of moderate factors of influence, in connection with which its deficiency is global, especially at the end of the winter – stall period of keeping animals. Accordingly it is the leading etiological factor of retinol deficiency infertility. As a result, the body has two negatives that act in parallel: carotene / vitamin A deficiency adversely affects the organs, the constituent and major functional unit of which is the secretory epithelial cell, and the free radical oxides formed in high concentration are extremely effective in destroying the cells, weakening antioxidant protection. Vitamin A has a significant effect on the reproductive function of animals both directly and indirectly. It is necessary to ensure the structure and functioning of the epithelial tissues of the organs of regulation and performance of sexual function, and therefore the physiological development of the fetus and the course of pregnancy, parturition and postpartum period, ovo- and spermiogenesis, the manifestation of sexual reflexes. Instead, its deficiency underlies the etiology and pathogenesis of retinol deficiency infertility of animals, causing changes in individual indices of homeostasis and prooxidate-antioxidant system, morphostructure of the reproductive and endocrine organs, hormonal status, sperm quality and reproductive function. The consequence is the emergence and development of gynecological, andrological, mammological and perinatal (ante-, intra-, post- and neo-) pathologies. At the same time, the addition of carotene or retinol to the diets of animals or their oral administration in cases of deficiency of vitamin A prevents impaired reproductive function. The study of the features of the etiopathogenesis of retinol deficiency infertility of animals allows programs of complex diagnostics, therapy and prevention to be developed which provide determination of carotene and vitamin A content and replenishment of the organism in cases of their deficiency.
