The importance of sustainable development has started to be acknowledged in Romania as well, once the various pollution sources and the restrictions affecting industrial and agricultural pollution were identified, from an economic and ecological standpoint. Sustainable development represents the need of raising awareness about environmental protection and educating people, and this aspect is reflected by the evolution of communal policies in recent years, policies marked by a shift from an approach based on constraints and sanctions to a higher level of flexibility, based on incentives. The purpose of this paper is to make a recommendation for improving existing policy by making an assessment of economic incentives in order to stimulate farmers to adopt sustainable farming systems of a viable, sustainable agriculture, capable to apply the newest technologies and lead to profit and efficiency, to the economical and organizational consolidation. To analyse the effects of different zone packages on income of farmers and the environment a linear programming model is developed for a typical, 192 ha mixed farm in the Iasi region plain pilot area. The major activities of the farm is keeping dairy cattle, growing fodder (grass, alfalfa, silage maize) and cash crops (winter wheat and maize).

Economic incentives are used in many situations to motivate improvements in the use of scarce resources. In some areas, implementing appropriate incentives is made challenging by the nature of existing institutions or the inability to assign property rights and measure individual use of key resources. Higher prices for irrigation water can motivate wiser use of water in regions where the opportunity cost of water is rising, due to increasing municipal, industrial and environmental demands. This paper describes how an increasing block-rate pricing structure was designed and implemented in an irrigation district in central California. The goals of the program were to improve water management practices and reduce the volume of subsurface drain water discharged into the San Joaquin River. Results describing reductions in average irrigation depths and drain water volumes, collected throughout the 1990s, demonstrate the potential for achieving resource management goals with economic incentives that motivate changes in farm-level management practices. Complementary incentive programs and issues regarding program implementation and the sustainability of drain water reduction efforts in an arid region also are discussed.

Road expansion has played a prominent role in the agrarian transition that marked the integration of swidden-based farming systems into the market economy in Southeast Asia. Rural roads deeply altered the landscape and livelihood structures by allowing the penetration of boom crops such as hybrid maize in remote territories. In this article, we investigate the impact of rural road developments on livelihoods in northern Laos through a longitudinal study conducted over a period of 15 years in a forest frontier. We studied adaptive management strategies of local stakeholders through the combination of individual surveys, focus group discussions, participatory mapping and remote-sensing approaches. The study revealed the short-term benefits of the maize feeder roads on poverty alleviation and rural development, but also the negative long-term effects on agroecosystem health and agricultural productivity related to unsustainable land use. Lessons learnt about the mechanisms of agricultural intensification helped understanding the constraints faced by external interventions promoting sustainable land management practices. When negotiated by local communities for their own interest, roads may provide livelihood-enhancing opportunities through access to external resources, rather than undermining them.

<p>Soil health is dependent upon complex bio-physical and bio-chemical processes which interact in space and time. Microrganisms and fauna in soil comprise highly diverse and dynamic communities that contribute, over either short or long time frames, to the transformation of geological minerals and release of essential nutrients for plant growth. Certified organic soil management practices generally restrict the use of chemically-processed highly soluble plant nutrients, leading to dependence on nutrient sources that require microbial transformation of poorly soluble geological minerals. Consequently, slow release of nutrients controls their rate of uptake by plants and associated plant physiological processes. Microbial and faunal interactions influence soil structure at various scales, within and between crystalline mineral grains, creating complex soil pore networks that further influence soil function, including the nutrient release and uptake by roots. The incorporation of organic matter into soil, as either manure or compost in organic farming systems is controlled to avoid excessive release of soluble nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, while simultaneously contributing an essential source of carbon for growth and activity of soil organisms. The interdependence of many soil physical and chemical processes contributing to soil health is strongly linked to activities of the organisms living in soil as well as to root structure and function. Capitalizing on these contributions to soil health cannot be achieved without holistic, multiscale approaches to nutrient management, an understanding of interactions between carbon pools, mineral complexes and soil mineralogy, and detailed examination of farm nutrient budgets.</p>

In this study, we examined three sets of antecedents of staff turnover in public universities in Uganda: demographic, controllable and uncontrollable. Data were collected from lecturers and administrators at the universities. Our findings suggest that the extent of controllable turnover is greater than uncontrollable turnover and that poor management practices are the major cause of employee turnover. Poor motivation was reported to be a major problem. In particular, economic incentives were found to be grossly inadequate to retain lecturers in the university system. Therefore, it is recommended that the universities upgrade their incentive systems, especially the economic motivators. The study also revealed that there is a pressing need to make the lecturers working environment conducive for the universities core functions of teaching, research and community engagement.

The development of landscape ecology, advances in computer technologies, the breaking up of Cold War political barriers,UNCED and the subsequent elaboration of public policy networks in resource conservation and sustainable development have combined to provide a new opportunity for sustainable development in a quality environment across the landscape. The challenge will be transformation of environmental and natural resource policies (rules) into landscape-scale management(practices). Successful implementation of these policies through the networks will require three conditions: the policies must meet well-known and accepted criteria; they must have the full force of law; and they must have a sound ethical foundation. These conditions being met, landscape-scale management can become a reality; the transition from environmental rule to landscape management practice can be complete.

Based on theoretical literature review, the paper demonstrates the misgiving of market economy corporate performance management practices when applied in poor markets. Western developed management practices are incongruent to serve poor customers in low-income markets. The findings of the literature review are that these management systems are exclusionary and conflict with sustainable development as they reject the poor as unprofitable and worthless to pursue as customers. In addition, they are based on antiquated assumptions and contradict ideologies and cultural contexts of the poor. In recent times, corporates are under pressure to enter low-income markets as developed markets get saturated. The poor are, however, significantly different from the affluent customers obtained in higher income segments. Corporates find themselves poorly equipped to succeed. Because poor markets are only latent, firms are expected to do more in order to create value than they would do when entering developed markets. The paper provides recommendations for the firms from developed markets to adjust their performance management practices in order to be successful in emerging markets.

There are many management methods for nutrient which can be specifically applied in farming systems. Integrated nutrient management (INM) generally denotes the combined use of organic and chemical fertilizers for producing crops in a sustainable manner and to maintain soil fertility as well as to supply nutrient in appropriate amount which consider social, ecological and economic impacts. This paper shows the importance and need of INM in agriculture production. Also, the relation of INM and yield attributes are analyzed and evaluated including growth and physical attributes of cowpea. The status of nutrient uptake by plant is also described along with other physical and chemical properties of soil. Finally, this paper also describes about the biofertilizer and its relation, impact and effect on crop production which can be used as a improved technology with the combination of other nutrient management practices.

The first article on ‘Impact of Innovative Strategic Human Resource Management Practices on the Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises’– A Case Study of Karnataka by B.K.Sathyanarayana and Nawal Kishor aims at evaluating the application and implementation of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) practices for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and to examine its impact on organisational performance. Six hundred & forty SMEs in and around the Bangalore District from both Manufacturing and Services Sector responded to the various Strategic Human Resource Management drivers and organizational drivers and it was inferred that there exists a positive significant correlation between these variables.  The next article on sustainable development best management practices in the food processing industry by Uma CS, Basavaraj & Prasanna Joshi attempts to study sustainable development that involves issues like organic farming, food safety and food quality. This paper highlights on the concept of green food system and the approach of good agricultural practices (GAP) which is a new concept that stresses on international quality standards, concerns and commitments about food production, food safety and security, environment sustainability of agriculture. Quality management is equally important in the food industry. Food processing is a capital intensive, water consuming and a polluting industry.  Therefore this paper also studies the management practices in this industry to reduce water wastage, ensuring food quality so the concept of green growth can be achieved. It also throws light on the various Governmental laws and regulations passed to control pollution and ensure food quality and health of the people.
