Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a newly introduced product in Sri Lanka with a high export market potential. Only a few entrepreneurs however, are capitalizing on this opportunity due to several factors such as lack of rigorous economic analyses and unavailability of information on export market opportunities. Against this background, this study attempts to analyse the economic viability of this enterprise in Sri Lanka. Interestingly, it was found that the VCO provides the highest net return per 1000 coconuts utilized compared to the other traditional coconut kernel products. The pay-back period for the initial investment on machineries was little over a month under current prices of inputs and outputs. Sensitivity analysis suggests that the crucial factor that determines the economic viability of this enterprise is world market VCO price and the sensitivity of the net return of VCO production for the nut price is very low. The break-even price of one liter of VCO was found to be US $ 4.8 whereas it receives US $ 8 in the export market. This study concluded the need of encouraging VCO production in Sri Lanka, given the long-term brighter outlook of the global VCO industry.

The study focuses on Sri Lankan virgin coconut oil industry because of it is one of the upcoming export products and also its position as one of the key player in the global market. Sri Lankan coconut industry is one of the major foreign exchange and employment generation source and element of the Sri Lankan nation. The study attempted to unearth the determinants of export competitiveness of virgin coconut oil industry in Sri Lanka by drawing attention on Porter’s theory of the competitive advantage of nations. The target population of the study consisted with individual firms which are engaging in virgin coconut oil export in Sri Lanka is two hundred and nineteen. The study used a likert scale to measure the chosen variables. Based on the Pearson Correlation analysis researcher can say that there is significance strong positive relationship between Availability of Raw materials, Quality of demand and Market share of export with the Export Competitiveness. According to regression analysis researcher can say that availability of Raw materials, Local market, Quality of demand and Market share of export has significance positive affect on Advantage of Export Competitiveness.

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is a superior edible oil extracted from fresh coconut (Cocos nucifera L) kernel using mixed coconut varieties without considering the varietal effect. Therefore, this research focuses on the quality evaluation of VCO extracted from four types of coconut varieties, namely Sri lanka Tall×Tall (TT), a tall variety of Gon Thambili (GT), a tall variety of Ran Thambili (RT) and Philippines tall variety of San Ramon (SR). Mature coconuts from each variety were collected from the Bandirippuwa Estate of the Coconut Research Institute, Sri Lanka to extract VCO by cold press oil extraction method. The extractability of VCO from different varieties was investigated. Moisture, free fatty acid (FFA), fatty acid profile (gas chromatography), peroxide value (PV), color (Lovibond scale), total phenolic substances (Galic acid equivalent), antioxidant capacity (α,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl, 0.1mM – DPPH method) and sun protection factor (SPF) of VCO extracted from each variety were analyzed. The experiment was conducted as a completely randomized design with three replicates. Data were analyzed using ANOVA using Tukey’s test by MINITAB 17. Oil extractability (58%-59%), FFA (0.04%-0.12%), color (0.43–0.93) and fatty acid profile of VCO did not show variation among varieties. A higher concentration of total phenolic substances was observed in GT (0.24±0.03mg GAE/100g) while antioxidant capacity (857.19±14.99mg/ml) and SPF (8.99±1.26) was rich in RT.

Aims: The study aims to identify the coconut export market of Sri Lanka based on market share and market growth and to classify coconut-importing countries using BCG matrix in order to facilitate potential strategic marketing decisions. Study Design:  This is a quantitative study based on secondary data. Place and Duration of Study: This study is based on Sri Lanka’s coconut exporting sector. The secondary data were collected from 2009 to 2019 from the various annual report of Central Bank of Sri Lanka, export performance report of Export Development Board of Sri Lanka and TRADEMAP. Methodology: The data were first tabulated and then generated as graphs to display market share and growth. The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix was used to classify coconut export market into four groups, namely stars, cash cows, question marks and dogs. Results: Export performance of coconut sector increased based on the export value. Similarly, the percentage share of coconut exports to the total exports increased from 3.5% to 5.5% over the last decade. United States of America (USA), Germany and the United Kingdom (UK) are significant importers of Sri Lankan coconut and coconut-based products. India, Mexico and Australia showed a growing trend in the growth of market share for coconut and coconut-based products. According to the BCG matrix, the USA is categorised under the star market, and no countries fall in the cash cow market. Sri Lankan coconut market with India, Mexico, Australia, Germany, France, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates (UAE), UK, South Korea, Italy, Canada, Japan, China, Spain and Russia fall into question mark markets. Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt and Iran are grouped into dogs market category. Conclusion: By identifying the position of the country at the BCG matrix, the coconut industry would carry out activities and projects to earn additional income and capture more world market share for coconut and coconut-based products. Policymakers should consider the position of the country while implementing related policies.

<p><em></em>Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is coconut oil that is processed in a simple way without involving synthetic chemicals. Production methods that are commonly carried out on a household scale or micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) include the methods of induced, salting, centrifugation, and fermentation. This process causes the lauric acid content of VCO to be the highest compared to the other 2 oils, which is 53.70-54.06 %, while ordinary coconut oil is 2.81% and palm oil is 0.45%. The high content of lauric acid makes VCO beneficial for health, including increasing endurance and accelerating the healing process of disease. In national and global and markets, until the 1990s VCO developed very slowly. But in 2020 the VCO market began to grow because people use this product as an antivirus against Covid-19. This paper explores the advantages, manufacturing technology, and trade of local and global VCO. Research results that apply VCO to food products and VCO-based food products that have the potential to be developed on the MSME scale are presented. Metode produksi yang umum dilakukan pada skala rumah tangga atau usaha mikro, kecil, dan menengah (UMKM) meliputi metode pancingan, penggaraman, sentrifugasi, dan fermentasi. Proses ini menyebabkan kandungan asam laurat VCO menjadi yang tertinggi dibanding 2 minyak lainnya, yaitu sebesar 53.70-54.06 %, sementara minyak kelapa biasa sebesar 2.81 % dan minyak sawit sebesar 0.45%. Tingginya kandungan asam laurat menjadikan VCO bermanfaaat untuk kesehatan, diantaranya meningkatkan daya tahan tubuh dan mempercepat proses penyembuhan penyakit. Pada pasar lokal dan global, hingga tahun 1990-an VCO berkembang sangat lambat. Namun pada tahun 2020 pasar VCO mulai menggeliat karena masyarakat menggunakan produk ini sebagai antivirus melawan Covid-19. Naskah ini menggali keunggulan, teknologi pembuatan, dan perdagangan VCO lokal dan global. Selain itu juga ditampilkan hasil-hasil penelitian yang mengaplikasikan VCO pada produk pangan dan dilengkapi dengan produk-produk pangan berbasis VCO yang berpotensi dikembangkan pada skala UMKM. Berdasarkan potensi pasar, teknologi, dan modal usaha maka produk berbasis VCO yang paling potensial dikembangkan ialah cokelat batang.</p><p>Kata kunci: Virgin coconut oil, pemasaran, produk pangan</p><p> </p>

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) adalah bahan alami yang memiliki sifat antimikroba (antivirus, antibakteri, dan antijamur). Sehingga VCO dapat memberikan efek pengawet pada bahan makanan, salah satunya adalah roti manis. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh VCO terhadap karakteristik (fisik dan kimia) dan umur simpan roti manis. Roti manis dianalisis secara fisik (tekstur dan porositas) dan kimia (kadar air, kadar abu, kadar lemak, kadar protein, dan kandungan karbohidrat), dan analisis umur simpan dengan FFA, uji organoleptik dan jamur setiap dua hari selama delapan hari penyimpanan di suhu ruang. Variasi perlakuan roti manis adalah dari rasio konsentrasi VCO: margarin: mentega, K (0%: 8%: 8%); A (4%: 6%: 6%); B (8%: 4%: 4%), C (12%: 2%: 2%); D (16%: 0%: 0%). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa VCO tidak memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap karakteristik fisik dan karakteristik kimia roti manis. Namun, VCO berpengaruh signifikan terhadap kadar air roti manis yang dihasilkan, roti manis K memiliki kadar air tertinggi (22,36%) dan berbeda dengan sampel roti manis lainnya. VCO secara efektif menghambat pertumbuhan jamur di roti manis pada konsentrasi 8%, 12%, dan 16%. Roti manis K dan A memiliki masa simpan 4 hari, sedangkan roti manis B, C, dan D memiliki masa simpan 6 hari.Kata kunci: VCO, roti manis, karakteristik, umur simpanABSTRACTVirgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a natural ingredient that has antimicrobial (antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal) properties. So that VCO can provide a preservative effect on food ingredients, one of which is sweet bread. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of VCO on characteristics (physical and chemical) and shelf life of sweet bread. Sweet bread was analyzed physically (texture and porosity) and chemistry (moisture content, ash content, fat content, protein content, and carbohydrate content), and shelf life analysis with FFA, organoleptic and mold tests every two days for eight days of storage at ambient temperature. Treatment variations of sweet breads is from the ratio of the concentration of VCO: margarine: butter, K (0%: 8%: 8%); A (4%: 6%: 6%); B (8%: 4%: 4%), C (12%: 2%: 2%); D (16%: 0%: 0%). The results showed that VCO did not have a significant effect on the physical characteristics and chemical characteristics of sweet bread. However, the VCO has a significant effect on the water content of the sweet bread produced, sweet bread K has the highest moisture content (22,36%) and it is different from other sweet bread samples. VCO effectively inhibits the growth of sweet bread mold at concentrations of 8%, 12%, and 16%. K and A sweet bread has a shelf life of 4 days, while sweet breads B, C, and D have a shelf life of 6 days.Keywords: VCO, sweet bread, characteristics, shelf life

Introduction: The role of virgin coconut oil in the treatment of allergic rhinitis is controversial. Thus, the aim of the present study is to determine the effects of virgin coconut oil ingestion, in addition to standard medications, on allergic rhinitis. We also studied the side effects of consumption of virgin coconut oil. Methods: Fifty two subjects were equally divided into test and control groups. All subjects received a daily dose of 10mg of loratadine for 28 days. The test group was given 10ml of virgin coconut oil three times a day in addition to loratadine. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis were scored at the beginning and end of the study. Results:, the symptom score were divided into nasal and non-nasal symptom scores. Sneezing score showed a significant difference, however the score was more in control group than test group, indicating that improvement in symptom was more in control group. The rest of the nasal symptom and non-nasal symptom score showed no significant difference between test and control groups. Approximately 58% of the test subjects developed side effects from consumption of virgin coconut oil, mainly gastrointestinal side effects. Conclusion: In the present study, ingestion of virgin coconut oil does not improve the overall and individual symptoms of allergic rhinitis, furthermore it has side effects.

ABSTRACT   EFFECT OF UTILIZATION OF VIRGIN COCONUT OIL (VCO) IN THE DIET ON PIG PERFORMANCE. Utilization of fats and oils in pig diets is of great importance due to their high energy value. VCO is obtained by cold press processing of the kernel from the coconut fruit. Utilization of virgin coconut oil (VCO) in the diets on pig performance.  The present study was designed to elaborate the effect of utilization of VCO in the diets on energy and protein digestibility of growing pigs. The experiment was conducted using 20 castrated male pigs aged 1.5 - 2.0 months weighing 12,0±2,0 kg. The data were analyzed according to the linear model procedure for ANOVA appropriate for Randomized Block Design with 5 treatments and 4 replications. Treatments were formulated as follow: R0 = 100% control diet + 0% VCO; R1 = 99.5% control diet + 1.0% VCO; R2 = 98.0% control diet + 2.0% VCO; R3 = 97.0% control diet + 3.0% VCO; and R4 = 96.0% control diet + 4.0% VCO. Parameters measured were: daily feed intake, daily gain, daily water consumption. The results showed that the utilization of VCO up to 4% in the diets had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on daily feed intake, daily gain, daily water consumption of pigs. It can be concluded that the addition of VCO up to 4.0% in the diets has no significant meaning on pig performance.   Key words: Virgin coconut oil (VCO), Performance, Growing pigs
