The present study investigates the difference effect of problem solving model with or without game-based learning (GBL) on lower and higher achievers’. Ninety-one students of grade eight (M = 13.9; SD = 0,5 year) from Indonesia were randomly allocated to participated in the study. Data were analyzed by using qualitative and quantitative methods. Two test were used in this study, one for assessing prior knowladge, and the other for the post-testing. Posttes was composed of two measuring both numeric (procedural and arithmatical accuracy) and reasoning (applied problems in geometry). Results indicated that students who were exposed to the game-based learning within problem solving (PS+GBL) significantly outperformed their counterparts who were exposed on the basis of textbook within problem solving (PS+TB). The positive effects of PS+GBL were observed on both tests of numeracy and applied problems in geometry. In addition, the findings show the positive effects of PS+GBL method on lower and higher achievers.

This design-based research study was aimed at finding out practical principles to help students develop a sense of community and have a meaningful learning experience. A total of 82 students participated in the study. Data were collected and analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods during three design-based research cycles. These analyses produced six qualitatively different categories that were completed with questionnaire data. To meet the goals of the design-based research, this study produced an online higher education course and design principles, as well as deepened our theoretical understanding of the sense of community in online learning.

An abstract of research article should give information obviously. Modalities assist researcher to provide certain obvious information in an abstract. This study important to carry out to identify the types and functions of Malay modality used in abstracts of Proceda Social and Behavioral Sciences journal and examine the types of modality that are dominantly used in abstracts of Proceda Social and Behavioral Sciences journal. Qualitative and quantitative methods are the design of this study. Data of this study are abstracts from 18 articles of Proceda Social and Behavioral Sciences journal published by Elsevier. The data were analyzed using intralingual equivalent method by applying hubung banding menyamakan (HBS) technique. The results of the analysis are then presented using informal methods. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there are four types of Malay modalities used in the abstracts of the Proceda Social and Behavioral Sciences journal, namely intentional, epistemic, deontic, and dynamic modalities. In addition, phrasal modals or periphrastic modals are found in the abstract in question. The dominant type of modality used in the abstract is intentional modality of 31%. Furthermore, the Malay modality used in the abstract articles of the Proceda Social and Behavioral Sciences journal indicates the existence of this modal function in abstract construction. The functions of the modals are to inform the aims or objectives, focus, problem, background and gap, method, technique analysis, and suggestion of the research. Keywords: abstract, malay, types of modalities PENGGUNAAN MODALITAS BAHASA MELAYU PADA ABSTRAK JURNAL PROCEDA SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES  AbstrakAbstrak dalam artikel penelitian harus memberikan infomasi yang jelas. Qualitative research is a primary way to understand the context of diabetes in a person′s life, beyond the medical outcomes. Identifying the qualitative issues such as patients′ knowledge about diabetes, their beliefs and attitudes, and their relationship with health care professionals can serve as data to determine the obstacles and, in turn, resolutions to those issues in diabetes management. Characteristics of qualitative and quantitative methods are described, with the discussion that both methods are complementary, not conflicting, to further the field of diabetes research.

Kinship care as a formal placement option has been steadily increasing over recent years, particularly in New South Wales. This paper draws on a report of research on kinship care in New South Wales, in which the two authors participated (Mason et al, 2002). In conducting the research, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to explore both ‘top down’ perspectives (from policy documents and statistics) and ‘bottom up’ perspectives (from child protection practitioners and those who experience policy as service recipients – kinship carers, young people in kinship care and parents of children in kinship care). In this paper we briefly outline the research and discuss findings relating to definitions of kinship care, the extent of kinship care in NSW, decision making around the placement of children in kinship care, reasons given by participants for kinship care, and support for carers.

Complex of measurements methods for indicate white efflorescence are presented in this paper. This article is focus on primary efflorescence, specifically lime based, which cannot be completely avoided. Tests involve not only qualitative and quantitative methods but also recommended additional measurement. Because there are not any standard for determination this kind of efflorescence, this set of tests should help for design concrete elements and limited risks of its creation.
