Skill Development in the Indian Food Processing Sector

Known as the fruit and vegetable basket of the world, India ranks second in fruits and vegetables production in the world, after China. The food processing sector is one of the largest sectors in India in terms of production, growth, consumption, and export. There, however, exists a keen lack in processing and storage infrastructure and capabilities, which are essential to reducing the waste and enhancing the value addition and shelf life of the farm products. The government has ambitious plans to increase the level of processing from 6% to 20%, value addition from 20% to 35% and share in global food trade from 1.5% to 3% by 2015 (MOFPI, 2011). This will see a spike in the requirement for qualified and trained food processing professional across the food industry sectors. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the importance of education for manpower development in the food industry and how it can be used to convert unemployable graduates into employable graduates for the food industry. The authors believe that private-public alliance between the private industry and public institutions (PPP) is the need of the hour and has the potential to create tremendous impact at the national level as the graduates coming out of the universities become more versatile with practical outlook.

India is a country of growing population and agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58 per cent of Indians population. The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution to world food trade every year due to its immense potential for value addition, particularly within the food processing industry. Government of India is giving more priority for welfare of the farmers. In this regard it is implementing several welfare schemes to provide financial support to farmers. Various schemes were introduced by the government, but the benefits of these schemes do not reach to the common people in our case farmers due to corruption happening at the middleware. Hence there is need of a reliable, authorized and secured system to maintain and manage these transactional records. This is where blockchain comes into picture. One of the aims of our system is to ensure that the amount transferred by the authority to a particular farmer, reaches to him/her without any corruption and system manipulation using the features of blockchain and cryptography.


Green marketing initiatives focus on the values and efforts that various companies incorporate into their marketing portfolio. This study analyses the green marketing process and practices prevalent in the food industry of India. Green marketing, along with greening the product and the firm by converting the 4Ps (price, product, promotion and place) of marketing into 4Ps of green marketing, involves a careful understanding of consumer preferences and purchase decision process. An in-depth review of the recent literature indicates that most of the aspects of green marketing align synergistically with the framework in the developed nations and, though it may appear to lag behind momentarily, it is catching-up quickly among Asian countries, including India. With the conscious-consumer at the helm, green marketing is increasingly viewed as a relevant marketing strategy in India towards sustainable development of the food industry. A questionnaire-based survey method was used for the data collection from food companies in India. The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis was also performed. It was found after analysis that the green marketing practices were positively associated with the product quality. It was also found that the green marketing practices have a positive significant impact on the environmental preservation. Hence, it can be suggested that green marketing practices lead to environmental preservation. In the long-term, both the consumers and the food processing industry stand to benefit greatly from such green marketing initiatives and awareness but the policies and strategies need to be formulated and implemented accordingly.

During the last decennia, the distance between the producer and the consumer has increased strongly. This enlarged distance manifests in different areas. Firstly, the distance has become larger geographically. Food products are transported around the world and have become common goods. Secondly, the producer and the consumer are driven apart on a social level. Many consumers have never visited a farm and have no idea how their food is produced. Thirdly, the food industry, distribution and the entire agribusiness complex have settled in between producer and consumer, thus enlarging the economical distance. This system is being criticised from many points of view and opportunities are brought forward that strive towards a more durable process on an ecological level (food kilometres, food transport); an economical level (fair price for both the producer and the consumer, regional economy) and a social level (local contacts, cooperation). A variety of initiatives, both supported by the government and unsupported, are started. It seems that especially in the peri-urban area, being close to both producer and consumer, opportunities exist for short chain initiatives.

The present study was undertaken to measure and compare the relative efficiencies of selected Food Processing Companies in India. The relationship between firm performance and selected variables in food processing sector has also been studied. Set considered for analysis consisted of 20 food processing companies with period of analysis covering 8 years from 2005 to 2012. Efficiency status of the firm was regressed upon using capital to sales ratio, labor cost to sales ratio, raw material cost to sales ratio and energy cost to sales ratio as explanatory variable. Results indicate that except for labor cost to sales ratio all other variables were having significant negative impact on the efficiency of food processing companies.

<p><em>As buildings are one of the highest energy consumers from all over the world, there is special need to focus on how to mitigate energy consumption through regulation and policy. Responding this necessity, the concept of green building is being implemented in many countries along with Indonesia as an alternate to the traditional building concept. However there is slow movement in implementing this concept, especially in Indonesia. From legal viewpoint this paper will aim to answer why the Indonesian green building sector is not well developed. The method used in this paper is normative legal research. The analysis finds that the slow movement is due to the lack of the regulatory framework on its subject. Moreover, there is only little support from the government toward policies that might drive growth of the green building development. In light of this, there should be robust and strong regulatio. This can be achieved at the national level by regulating green buildings and also having government policies that encourage the development of green buildings. </em></p><p> </p>

Ukraine's food industry is extremely important for the country's economy, and food production always deserves special attention in state economic policy and ensuring food security of the country. Therefore, this research is dedicated to the analysis of the main problems of development of the food processing sector of the country's economy and finding prospects for its development in the current conditions of functioning. The purpose of the article is the researching of problems of functioning and search of ways of improvement of development of Ukraine's food industry in the conditions of reorientation of process of manufacturing of branch products to more innovative and technologically advanced with high value added, taking into account modern global financial and economic, and technological trends of functioning of economy; identification of all positive and negative factors of functioning in the new conditions of the industry. Such production is considered as the main instrument of the country for improving the efficiency of development of the food industry of Ukraine in particular, and the economy of the country as a whole. In order to reach this purpose, the following objectives have been solved: the basic tendencies of development of the food processing sector of Ukraine are summarized in the context of solving global problems and challenges of the present and the directions of improving the efficiency of development of the food industry of Ukraine are justified by determining the priority of the state influence on the production and increase of export of food products with high value added. The subject of the research have been scientific, theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of the problems and prospects of development of the food industry of Ukraine. The methodology of the research assumes the dialectical nature of the relationship between the development of the global economy, integration processes, structural and transformational changes in the world economy with the formation and functioning of the food processing sector of the national economy. The research is based on a systemic approach, which is a comprehensive study of the main problems of food industry development. In addition, the methods of the empirical as well as theoretical levels have been used, namely: comparative analysis is to study the development of particular branches of the food industry and the main problems inherent in a particular industry; SWOT analysis, the methodology of which is the basis for developing strategic plans at any level; statistical and economic methods are to identify trends in structural and dynamic changes in food production; abstract-logical method is for generalization of theoretical propositions, establishment of causal relationships and formation of conclusions and proposals. The article considers the objective necessity of state supporting of the food industry of Ukraine in the conditions of a market economy, in view of their unique features. The economic principles of the necessity of directing state regulation to support the development of food processing with a deeper technological process of manufacturing of innovative products with high value added, as the main tool for enhancing the development of the food industry, are formed. The results of the research and conclusions obtained can be used in the practical activity of public authorities and local self-government aimed at ensuring food security, for the development of programs for the development of food industry, in the development of state programs of socio-economic development.

As corruptions is one of the most important problems in most modern states, its assessment forms an important part of integral governance indicator. Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI), a technique, worked out by The World Bank, is widely used in the international level. Since 2019 the technique “Methodology of Conducting Sociological Surveys for Corruption Assessment in the Constituent Entities of the Russian Federation” (further in the text — Methodology of the Russian Federation Government), adopted by the Government Decree of the Russian Federation, is used in the national level. The main purpose of the present research is to evaluate how the national methodology of corruption assessment reflects the quality of governance in this sphere. The research focuses on the main techniques for corruption assessment in different levels. The study analyses the main scientific statements for corruption assessment as a component of integral quality indicator of governance. Secondary data of corruption survey’s findings formed the information and empirical base of the research. The novelty of the study is in developing original author’s approach towards methodological aspects of comprehensive governance assessment. It was found that the national methodology is an alternative approach, characterizing the quality of governance in this sphere. The research revealed several drawbacks of the indicative methodology issued by the World Bank. The Methodology of the Russian Federation Government more appropriately reflects the corruption level and more accurately characterizes the governance quality in the sphere of fighting corruption in the regions of the Russian Federation.

Food waste is a hot topic around the world due to the significant environmental challenge it poses. The study aims to assess the impact of food waste on the food chain at the national level. The data were obtained from quantitative impact studies, carried out in a project funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Sustainable Development, “Methods to reduce food waste on the agri-food chain, at national level, to prevent and reduce socio-economic impact, until 2030”. A total of 852 companies were interviewed, with a turnover of almost 6.5 billion euro and a number of over 69 thousand employees, including 273 primary production enterprises, 270 food processing units, 171 distribution/retail units, and 138 HoReCa units.
