Young People, Sexual Content and Solicitation Online

Young people can potentially be exposed to sexual material from a variety of sources, both accidentally and purposefully. One such source, the internet, plays host to a vast array of information and imagery, among which sexually explicit material and pornography are in high concentration. Indeed within this virtual catalogue of material it is possible to find both adult and child pornography, particularly if one is aware of the correct methods of accessing such content. This chapter provides an in-depth overview of current knowledge regarding young people’s exposure to and experiences of sexual material and sexual predators online, including those particular aspects of young people’s online interactions that make them vulnerable to receive unwanted sexual material and solicitation. The authors then discuss the use of the Internet for the sexual exploitation of children and young people both in the nature of sexual material to which they are exposed to online including the transmission of images of child pornography and molestation, the processes by which young people access sexual material online, the solicitation of children by sexual predators in targeting young people and how young people in turn come to interact with sexual predators online. Finally they address current mechanisms designed to protect children and young people as they engage in online activities.

El presente trabajo se propone identificar los principales peligros digitales que enfrentan los menores al navegar libremente en Internet, y el alcance de la protección legal disponible en México. Para tal efecto se identifica el uso de internet entre niños y adolescentes; se detectan los principales peligros digitales, y el alcance de la protección legal disponible en México y en el mundo. Las dimensiones que caracteriza este problema conlleva a considerar que los esfuerzos nacionales son insuficientes si los delitos informáticos no se resuelven en un marco internacional. ABSTRACTThe internet is, after television, the means of communication that has the greatest influence on children and young people. In recent years, children and adolescents have learned early how to use electronic equipment; however, although they have acquired digital skills, they are unaware of the dangers that their use implies. This work aims to identify the main digital dangers that minors face when freely browsing the Internet, and the scope of legal protection available in Mexico. For this purpose, the use of the internet among children and adolescents is identified; the main digital dangers are detected, and the scope of legal protection available in Mexico and in the world. The dimensions that characterize this problem lead to consider that national efforts are insufficient if cybercrime is not solved in an international framework.

Abstract: This paper presents emerging findings based on 35 semi-structured interviews conducted with children and youth from the research project Children, Young People, and New Media in the Home. The objective of this research is to examine young people’s use of the Internet by focusing on the overall media environment at home. Our study indicates that while children and young people are active and intrepid Internet surfers, they use the Internet to extend their local and school-based social ties, and that they have very little concern for offensive or illegal content issues. We argue that these experiences of children and young people need to be considered an intrinsic facet of Canadian Internet policy development treating children and young people as valid and active citizens. Résumé : Cet article présente de nouvelles données basées sur trente-cinq entrevues semi-structurées menées auprès d’enfants et de jeunes dans le cadre du projet de recherche « Les enfants, les jeunes, et les nouveaux médias au foyer ». L’objectif de cette recherche consiste à examiner l’utilisation d’Internet par les jeunes en tenant compte de leur milieu médiatique au foyer. Notre étude indique que les enfants et les jeunes, bien qu’ils soient des cybersurfeurs actifs et intrépides, utilisent principalement Internet pour développer leurs réseaux locaux et scolaires, et qu’ils ne se préoccupent guère de questions de contenu offensif ou illégal. Nous soutenons qu’il faut tenir compte des expériences de ces enfants et jeunes dans l’élaboration d’une politique canadienne pour Internet qui traite ceux-ci comme des citoyens actifs à part entière.

Analysis of the Slovak Discourses of Sex Education Inspired by Michel FoucaultThe aims, rules and topics of sex education exist on paper, but have yet to be implemented in Slovakia. Although the curriculum creates the illusion of openness in this field, the silence on sex education in schools provides space for the alternative, "more valuable" quiet discourses of religious education. Under these conditions, it is silence that is proving to be an advantageous strategy for the majority of those who should be voicing their opinions. Instead, they listen and control. By contrast, those who do speak out, children and young people, do not in fact, speak to them, but mainly among themselves. Those who are silent and listen are not prepared for the younger generations confessions on sexuality, which are mostly taken from the liberal area of media, especially the internet. The silent frequently lack, at the very least, the basic ability to react and debate in this changed situation. Those who are involved in the discussion on sexuality in Slovakia are those who should listen and supervise.

The Internet is a tool that enables knowledge and information to spread rapidly, which has a huge impact on the development of person and society. It has a particularly significant impact on the young generation that eagerly use its benefits for the entertainment, communication and information purposes. A mobile phone plays an increasing role here, as it enables continuous, mobile access to the network. However, the effects of using the Internet in everyday life can be positive (e.g. learning) but also negative (e.g. addictions). Research shows that the time spent by young people online is constantly increasing. This causes concern among parents and carers. The use of the Internet by children and adolescents is a current and important topic, that requires constant attention and continuation of research, as well as education of users, parents and teachers on the proper use of the Internet.

The sexual exploitation of children remains a very serious problem and is rapidly increasing globally through the use of the Internet. This chapter focuses on the child pornography and IT, and the various methods to combat this problem. The ease of acquiring IT and digital equipments, the global reach of Internet and freely available peer-to-peer services have made child pornography a very complex issue to undertake. The borderless nature of the Internet and the lack of unified criminal code among nations further escalated the complexity of law enforcement against child pornography.

A tremendous growth in the use of the Internet has been observed in the past two decades. More than 75% of Americans participate in online activities (University of Southern California Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future, 2004) such as e-mail, Web browsing, working from home, accessing news stories, seeking information, instant messaging, using the Internet in lieu of the library for school work, playing games, and managing personal finance. For professionals, the Internet is an important medium for networking and building social capital. However, along with all positive impacts, there are also negative outcomes. One such negative outcome includes Internet crimes. Dowland, Furnell, Illingworth, and Reynolds (1999) state that “with society’s widespread use of and, in some cases, reliance upon technology, significant opportunities now exist for both mischievous and malicious abuse via IT systems” (p. 715). Internet crimes (cyber crimes) consist of specific crimes dealing with computers and networks (such as hacking, spreading of viruses, and worms) and the facilitation of traditional crime through the use of computers on the Internet (such as child pornography, hate crimes, telemarketing/Internet fraud). This article focuses on Internet crimes, especially those affecting individual users, and offers a discussion of issues regarding Internet crimes and gender.

Internet is a mean of mass information and fulfills the traditional functions of a public space without doubts. Participation in the virtual space is defined as a problematic use of the Internet process which damages the disadvantaged young person's personality, which is already characterized by a lack of social skills, communication, feelings of expression issues. The majority of young people are attracted by internet space, by its anonymity and availability. The aim of the research is to analyze the influence of gender and family aspects in online participation of teenagers at social risk. The research showed that the internet provides the great and additional opportunities to teenagers at social risk, something they don’t get in their families. Children living with grandparents or with only one parent are more active users of Internet social networks in comparison with other children. They seldom recognize the Internet dangers and more quickly become emotionally dependent on the Internet. The adults’ control or its absence determines the expression and frequency of online participation of teenagers at social risk. The girls more frequently recognize the dangers of virtual space than the boys do; but the girls use to publish more information about themselves. The research results show that the participation of teenagers at social risk in social networks is unconscious. Young people are not able to “filter” and select proper information, usually equate the virtual world with reality. Online participation of teenagers is reasoned by satisfaction of needs, parents’ inattention and search for new acquaintances.

Background ‘Sexting’ is the exchange of sexually explicit material via communication technologies. Despite significant media attention, there has been little examination of sexting in the Australian setting. This study aimed to provide insight into sexting behaviours and attitudes among young Australians. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of people aged 16–29 years attending a music festival (n = 1372). Correlates of lifetime sexting were determined using multivariate logistic regression. Attitudes towards and perceived consequences of sexting were explored in focus group discussions (FGDs) with 39 young people. Results: Forty percent of survey participants reported that they had ever sent or received a sext (48% of males, 36% of females), most commonly with a regular partner. Lower levels of education, greater recreational spending, greater number of sexual partners, inconsistent condom use with a regular partner, identifying as being nonheterosexual and risky alcohol consumption were all independent correlates of sexting. FGD participants made a clear distinction between consensual creating, sending and possessing of sexts, and nonconsensual sharing of sexts. Positive outcomes of consensual sexting included flirting and sexual experimentation, with sexting perceived as a normalised aspect of sexual interaction. Conclusions: Sexting is a common and normalised practice among young Australians. Our findings highlight the distinction in young people’s minds between consensual sexting and the nonconsensual sharing or circulation of sexts, which is not currently well recognised in sexuality education, the media or the law.
