Nowadays, knowledge is considered as one of the most valuable assets of an enterprise which has to be managed efficiently and effectively in order to gain a competitive advantage in the knowledge economy era. Knowledge Management (KM) evolved into a strategic management approach, finding application not only in the business world but also in other areas such as education, government and healthcare. In this way, the new link between KM and KBD created the appropriate environment for the advent of a new concept in the scientific and practitioners’ communities, the concept of “Knowledge City” (KC). Nowadays, the theme of KCs is a ‘hot’ topic of interest and discussion. The process for developing a KC, is neither quick nor simple. This seems to be already understood by the research community, which the last few hears has begun to concentrate its efforts so as to develop appropriate frameworks, methodologies, tools, systems, etc so as to support the development of KCs. In this context, and given that there are still many pending issues, this article attempts to propose a taxonomy of KC research, by co instantaneously presenting the status with these major themes of KC research. The discussion presented on this article should be of value to researchers and practitioners.

While numerous reviews have examined the changing roles, skills, competencies, and educational needs of health service managers as the result of health care reforms, no study has focused specifically on the impact of New South Wales health reforms on the roles, responsibilities and behaviours of senior health executives in the public health sector. This paper briefly illustrates the significant changes in New South Wales health management since 1986. It also examines the forces behind these changes and predicts their impact on NSW Senior Health Executives based on national and international literature, and provides a foundation for further empirical research.

AbstractFor strategists working in and for firms, acquiring knowledge about the business world is dependent on a rational process of collecting, organizing, and interpreting information. As such, these individuals are best conceived not as knowers, but as self-directing learners who are motivated to acquire, create, and apply new knowledge. To facilitate these processes, in this paper an axiomatic foundation for strategic thinking is established regarding the nature of the object of strategic thinking, the nature of strategic thinking, and the nature of knowledge. Next, four boundary references set by these axioms are used to establish a new conceptual frame of reference for strategic rationality. Interconnections between the boundary references are subsequently used to infer six canons for strategic rationality. It is concluded that strategic rationality may be found where all references overlap. Finally, to contribute towards greater rationality in strategic management practice, an actionable definition of strategic rationality is formulated that includes all references and canons.

Abstract The health sector is considered extremely important by governments and multilateral international organisms, due to its implication to life, as well as material and human struggling involved. This study adopts a systematical approach in order to question if the mortality outcomes in medium Brazilian cities explain or may be explained by factors considered external to the public health service, expressed by health social determinants. Therefore, this study aims to investigate health conditions in public health management in medium Brazilian cities. The scenario adopted contains 192 cities with a population contingent between 100 000 and 500 000 inhabitants, between the years 2007 and 2011. The database produced, containing 30 indicators representing conceptual models referenced, allowed the elaboration of an operational model of health social determinants from a Bayesian network. As result, we elaborated a model of health system formed by six factors, showing associations that allow a better comprehension about relations among health social determinants and health conditions, producing contextualized information, able to subsidize the formulation of strategies by managers of Sistema Único de Saúde.

This study aimed to identify the use of management tools and the influence of stakeholders on organizational performance of companies in the private health sector in the Federal District. We used the tools of strategic management, such as budgeting, strategic planning, balanced scorecard, benchmarking, and management software. Study participants consist of individuals involved in strategic processes. We analyzed the past 5 years in organizations to understand the performance. The data collection was face-to-face, the instruments consisted of qualitative interviews in person, and semi-structured content analysis. We also performed analysis of secondary data and documents. To measure the performance between the organizations we used the method of data envelopment analysis (DEA), using the CCR standard, and the mean change index as the number of employees, physicians, costs, number of appointments, and tests. In the analysis of tools and stakeholders we adapted values for the major and minor influences and the other results found framed. The results cite the presence of management tools in five of the six organizations. The comparison of performance between them presented as a result that organizations 2 and 4 were efficient and 3 was the least efficient. The study identified the need to understand the requirements of stakeholders and the indicators set out to understand organizational performance and its evolution, mainly determined by the management tools. Although not reaching proposed levels, this work creates hypotheses about the use of these tools and analysis of stakeholders in organizational performance.

This study seeks to understand the pragmatism of the development of sharia economic law, and its implications for Islamic financial products in Indonesia. The data comes from the results of interviews and focus group discussions with key informants from academics, practitioners, authorities, and the public. This research finds that pragmatism in the development of Islamic economic law is an approach that still dominates the DSN-MUI fatwas. The pragmatism style used is complex-eclectic pragmatism which is represented through makhārij al-fiqhiyyah, which is to choose a mild opinion by sticking to the strongest method or also called "taysīr al-manhajī". The use of this method is intended to ensure that the fatwa is truly able to answer the needs of the business world, as well as being in line with sharia principles. DSN-MUI also does not use maslahah as a legal consideration in a free or liberal way. Rather, it returns maslahah in consideration of the method, so that it is permissible to use the bay’ al-'inān contract only in a forced state (ḍarurah).
