Research has found that when compared with civilian students, military-connected students in the United States have more negative mental health outcomes, stemming from the stress of military life events (i.e., deployment). To date, studies on military-connected youth have not examined the role of protective factors within the school environment, such as school climate, in the mental health and well-being of military-connected adolescents. Given this gap in the research on military adolescents, this study draws from a large sample of military and non-military secondary adolescents in military-connected schools ( N = 14,943) and examines associations between school climate, military connection, deployment, and mental health. Findings show that multiple components of school climate are associated with a lower likelihood of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation and increased likelihood of well-being among students in military-connected schools, after controlling for student demographics, military connection, and deployments. The authors conclude with a discussion of school climate interventions for military-connected youth.

This study explores the perceptions and practices of the English language teachers to create autonomous learning environment in the context of Nepalese secondary EFL classroom. The study further unpacks the role of the teachers in creating better learning opportunities for learners so as to promote learner autonomy. The research is based on interpretive paradigm to look into kaleidoscopic view of variety of perspectives, classroom practices and emerging dilemmas of the teachers. Based on the findings, the research showcases the deep rooted social practices and myths to bring tensions in the relation between teachers and students. The school environment has to be homely and autonomy supportive. It seems pertinent to think over the concept of learner autonomy globally and act locally adapting the global trends and issues of teaching and learning, and at the same time, there is a dire need to remain mindful of the translated concept of learner autonomy thinking contextually and pragmatically.

This case focuses on the complexity of change and improvement within schools with a particular emphasis on the role of the principal and a science teacher leader. Although current rhetoric suggests that school improvement should happen quickly and consistently, research indicates that it is difficult, context specific, and incremental. In fact, expecting quick change can backfire, leading to short-term technical fixes that inhibit exploration of underlying beliefs and assumptions that generate meaningful change that results in learning and continuous improvement. Focused on a principal and teacher leader in a school facing declining science scores and other challenges, this case asks aspiring and practicing administrators and teacher leaders to consider the assumptions driving individuals’ behavior in their efforts to enhance practice and respond to external challenges in the long term.

AbstractA school climate is the product of a specific social group. It influences the work of both teachers and students; it is a reflection of the objective reality in schools. It is experienced, evaluated and perceived by the actors of school life subjectively. In agreement with the current approaches to education (neuropedagogy, neuroscience), the importance of a positive school climate is accentuated. It is a part of school environment in the emotional, social and physical contexts. We put an accent on the interconnection and mutual determination of the climate and some selected determinants - inappropriate behaviour, interaction and safe educational environment. Nowadays, the notion of the school climate is joined with the adjective “optimal”. Based on the undertaken research, we make a conspectus of empirical findings which are related to school environment and school climate.

The purpose of the initial community service activity was aimed at responding to complaints about the problems of the school in academics (universities) that vocational student graduates were not working in the area of expertise possessed by students and also only a few students were able to create their jobs. The method used in community service uses an interpersonal approach to teachers and students using in-depth interviews with students and also teachers, interactive socialization, and discussion. The results of community service activities with Semen Gresik vocational partners provided positive results, both according to the perception of teachers and students, namely: (1) an increase in understanding of the problems along with finding solutions for teachers on the causes of low entrepreneurial interest for vocational students; (2) mental growth of students' confidence from their competence, after experiencing a strengthening of motivation on the principle of entrepreneurship (3) increasing insight and knowledge for students and teachers on the important role of entrepreneurship in the current digitalization era.
