This chapter describes how TESOL educators can partner with global aid organizations, local communities, and learners themselves to leverage low-tech yet innovative learning solutions like text-message lessons with the goal of more equitably reaching learners, particularly those affected by disruption to their education such as those who are migrants/refugees. Taking such action as advocates committed to closing opportunity gaps arising from social issues affecting language learning not only involves the TESOL educator in the six principles for exemplary teaching of English learners but also UN Sustainable Development Goals as a framework, trauma-informed teaching and learning, and the concept of text messages used as micro-learning. Through a UNICEF case study of practice in action, the author provides a stepwise how-to for redesigning curriculum into micro-learning appropriate for text-message delivery and offers considerations and recommendations for its dissemination, evaluation, and potential application to many other contexts and learner populations at scale.

Introduction Mobile-technology-based interventions are promising strategies for promoting behavioural change in obese patients. The aims of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of implementing a text message intervention, and to assess the effects of the intervention on body mass index (BMI) and self-reported behavioural change. Methods TELEFIT was a three-phase feasibility study comprising the following stages: (a) the development of text messages; (b) testing; and (c) a quasi-experimental pilot study in which patients who were engaged in obesity/overweight educational groups in public primary care centres in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, were recruited. A bank of text messages was drafted and reviewed by an expert panel, text message delivery software was developed and tested, and a pilot study assessed patients before and after receiving the intervention using validated questionnaires and body measures. The data were analysed using the Wilcoxon test. Results A total of 46 patients completed the follow-up; 93.5% were women and the median age was 42 years (interquartile range (IQR) 34–52 years). At four months, participants had a significant reduction in BMI (median 31.3 (IQR 28.2–34.6) vs. 29.9 (IQR 27.2–34.6) kg/m2, p < 0.001), systolic (median 125 (IQR 120–132) vs. 120 (IQR 110–130) mmHg, p = 0.013) and diastolic blood pressure (median 80 (IQR 70–100) vs. 80 (IQR 70–80) mmHg, p = 0.006), when compared to baseline. All patients reported to be satisfied and willing to continue receiving the intervention, and 93.3% felt that the intervention helped them change their behaviours. Discussion This study has shown that a text message intervention to promote behavioural change and weight loss was feasible and effective in a short-term period. Participants were satisfied and willing to continue receiving the SMS messages.

This article presents a discussion on the importance of digital tools that can be used in the process of teaching and learning additional languages at a time of emergency education. It is a bibliographic study with a qualitative approach, carried out with a search in different databases with criteria to select texts for analysis. Among the tools used, we highlight an analysis related to Duolingo, from a perspective of the CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) approach, based on technical, theoretical, and social criteria. The results point to the potential of this tool due to the gratuity, multiplatform access, gamified interface, and activity management by the teacher through Duolingo Schools, in addition to the possibility of certifying the level of proficiency in the English language. The discussion also shows some limitations and social issues that highlight the precariousness of online education before and during the context of a global pandemic

Teaching and learning in the 21st century require students to become active thinkers in using technology to learn, innovate, communicate, and discover new knowledge. Instagram media was a great tool to showcase learning in an innovative learning environment where students took ownership of their learning and ideas. It could be used as hands-on training and build local and professional communities' knowledge. The sample for this study was 15 students from Tritech Informatika High School located in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Data was collected through interviews and related literature. Data analysis was analyzed using open coding methods that examined classified, tabulated, or combined evidence to solve the original research problem. Qualitative analysis that was conducted showed that Instagram media was the most used social media platform among participants, preferring to use it for educational and language learning purposes. This showed that social learning positively affected learning material research, motivation, academic and academic achievement satisfaction, and cooperative learning.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Public grant(s) – National budget only. Main funding source(s): Medical Research Council OnBehalf BICeP Study Group Background Prompt, effective bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the single most important factor determining survival from out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), increasing survival up to 4-fold. However only 35%-45% of people trained in CPR actually attempt it when required. This study uses psychological theory and behaviour change techniques (BCTs) to increase the proportion of bystanders who attempt CPR in a real emergency. Design Intervention development study Methods Intervention content was informed by two recent systematic reviews, which identified barriers to bystander CPR and BCTs within existing training programmes (PROSPERO CRD42018117438; CRD42019126745) and a qualitative study exploring participants’ views (n = 12) of draft text messages. A lay bystander user-involvement panel (n = 7) and an expert advisory group (comprising representatives from CPR training organisations) worked with the research team to co-produce the final intervention and agree the schedule for text message delivery.  BCT content was assessed by two independent experts. A framework analysis of interviews was undertaken.  Results Recognising and addressing fears, and helping people to better prepare for real-life situations were identified to be important to participants. Short, simple texts from a credible source and with a positive tone were strongly preferred, there was a strong aversion to anything "guilt-inducing". Pictures and personalisation were important, rewards less so. Regarding frequency: participants varied but around 1/week was considered adequate by most. A total of n = 35 text-messages with verified BCT content were co-developed with participants. Conclusions A text message intervention incorporating BCTs, which is acceptable to intended users and CPR trained individuals has been produced and will be subject to future evaluation.

Background Mobile technology has increased the reach of health behavior interventions but raised new challenges in assessing the fidelity of treatment receipt. Fidelity can be compromised if participant fatigue or burden reduces engagement, leading to missed or delayed treatments for just-in-time interventions. Objective This study aimed to investigate the temporal dynamics of text message receipt confirmations. Methods Community-dwelling adults (N=10) were sent five text messages daily for 4 months (5598 messages sent in total), with a financial incentive to confirm receipt of 75% or more messages. Results Overall, the message receipt confirmation rate was very high (5504/5598, 98.32%) and timely (eg, two-thirds of confirmations within 2 min). Confirmation times were slightly slower on weekends (vs weekdays) and as a function of the cumulative time in the study. Neither time of message delivery nor message content was associated with message confirmation latencies. Conclusions Participants receiving financial incentives to confirm text message receipt exhibit extremely high and fast confirmation rates, although receipt confirmations were somewhat less timely on weekends (vs weekdays) and later in the intervention. The social calendar and treatment fatigue should be considered when planning text message–based interventions, especially if treatments are intended for a just-in-time delivery that requires extended engagement and precise timing.

Background: Patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments allow patients to interpret their health and are integral in evaluating orthopedic treatments and outcomes. The purpose of this study was to define: (1) correlation between PROs collected by automated delivery of text messages on mobile phones compared with paper delivery; and (2) patient use characteristics of a technology platform utilizing automated delivery of text messages on mobile phones. Methods: Paper versions of the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) and the short form of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) were completed by patients in orthopedic hand and upper extremity clinics. Over the next 48 hours, the same patients also completed the mobile phone portion of the study outside of the clinic which included text message delivery of the SF-12 and QuickDASH, assigned in a random order. Correlations between paper and text message delivery of the 2 PROs were assessed. Results: Among 72 patients, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between the written and mobile phone delivery of QuickDASH was 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85-0.95). The ICC between the paper and mobile phone delivery of the SF-12 physical health composite score was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.79-0.93) and 0.86 (95% CI, 0.75-0.92) for the SF-12 mental health composite score. Conclusions: We find that text message delivery using mobile phones permits valid assessment of SF-12 and QuickDASH scores. The findings suggest that software-driven automated delivery of text communication to patients via mobile phones may be a valid method to obtain other PRO scores in orthopedic patients.

Background: In China, where follow-up with hospitalized attempters is generally lacking, there is a great need for inexpensive and effective means of maintaining contact and decreasing recidivism. Aims: Our objective was to test whether mobile telephone message contacts after discharge would be feasible and acceptable to suicide attempters in China. Methods: Fifteen participants were recruited from suicide attempters seen in the Emergency Department in Wuhan, China, to participate in a pilot study to receive mobile telephone messages after discharge. All participants have access to a mobile telephone, and there is no charge for the user to receive text messages. Results: Most participants (12) considered the text message contacts an acceptable and useful form of help and would like to continue to receive them for a longer period of time. Conclusions: This suggests that, as a low-cost and quick method of intervention in areas where more intensive follow-up is not practical or available, telephone messages contacts are accessible, feasible, and acceptable to suicide attempters. We hope that this will inspire future research on regular and long-term message interventions to prevent recidivism in suicide attempters.
