In this pandemic circumstance, the Bangladesh government started distance learning using broadcasting and online classes. This is a comparative study exploring the impact of online classes on adolescent learning during COVID-19 lockdown in Bangladesh. The study conducts a telephonic interview with 10 headteachers of urban and rural government schools through a semi-structured questionnaire. The study uses descriptive and documentary methods for analysis. The study finds the limitations and challenges facing by the teachers and the students to attend online classes. However, online examinations and assignments are more impactful than online classes to engage students and practice lessons but not enough to compensate for the learning gaps. Even parents are not satisfied with these. Many parents admitted their children to madrasah, and many parents want to continue their children's education after reopening the schools.

Abstract - Facing the Covid-19 pandemic, teachers, parents, school principals, must change the learning pattern from face-to-face learning to online learning, all parties must prepare all the tools to facilitate this online learning in a very urgent time, besides the curriculum targets that have not yet reached because the pandemic occurred in the middle of the semester. Likewise with the media that schools and parents must prepare in online learning, such as computers / laptops and internet-based cell phones. The Ministry of Education and Culture issued circular letter No.2 of 2020 regulating the technical implementation of distance learning or home learning (BDR) in each region. This study aims to determine the implementation of distance learning at the SD, SMP, SMA and SMK levels in all districts / cities of West Java. Data were collected through surveys, data analysis using thematic analysis of qualitative data. The results of the analysis show: 1) Preparation and planning, carried out through a circular letter from the Minister of Education and Culture and Local Government are welcomed by schools and continued by socializing to school residents and parents through social media, teachers make BDR plans online with the application; 2). The process, media and learning resources are carried out online through social media, Facebook, WA, IG, Youtube and video; 3) Constraints, the obstacles faced by the teacher are in the form of limited quota / network, difficulty controlling students, while for parents access to the internet and limited gadget facilities as well as difficulties in managing the time and process of accompanying children to learn; and 4). The impact of BDR, curriculum targets are not optimally achieved, moral assessment is difficult to do. For parents, the impact of BDR feels that they have a better understanding of the learning difficulties experienced by children. In general, the success of online learning in West Java during the Covid-19 pandemic was determined by the readiness of infrastructure in the form of internet access and gadged facilities, support and collaboration from all stakeholders, including government, schools, teachers and parents as well as the readiness /skills of teachers in planning. and carry out the online learning process. PurposeThis study aims to explore whether online learning has an effect on communication between instructors and students in a negative way, whether online learning affects students' productivity levels and to evaluate and suggest ways of improving effective online communication between instructors and students.Design/methodology/approachThis study used is a quantitative research study which was conducted through a semi-structured online survey through a random sample technique.FindingsResults revealed that the vast majority agree with the questions of the study. Students still prefer classroom classes over online classes due to many problems they face when taking online classes, such as lack of motivation, understanding of the material, decrease in communication levels between the students and their instructors and their feeling of isolation caused by online classes.Research limitations/implicationsThis research studied the impact from students' perspective only as the sample was selected only from students.Originality/valueThis research reached the students’ point of view in a broader way which will help understanding the issues and provide effective solutions. This research suggested that instructors must communicate with their students and vice versa in more informal channels (instant messages online chat groups, audio calls, private video calls …) in parallel with the formal channels (online platforms, email …). Finally, instructors should encourage students to participate and study more by providing different kind of incentives.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic forced dental schools to close their campuses and move didactic instruction online. The abrupt transition to online learning, however, has raised several issues that have not been resolved. While several studies have investigated dental students’ attitude towards online learning during the pandemic, mixed results have been reported. Additionally, little research has been conducted to identify and understand factors, especially pedagogical factors, that impacted students’ acceptance of online learning during campus closure. Furthermore, how online learning during the pandemic impacted students’ learning performance has not been empirically investigated. In March 2020, the dental school studied here moved didactic instruction online in response to government issued stay-at-home orders. This first-of-its-kind comparative study examined students’ perceived effectiveness of online courses during summer quarter 2020, explored pedagogical factors impacting their acceptance of online courses, and empirically evaluated the impact of online learning on students’ course performance, during the pandemic. Method The study employed a quasi-experimental design. Participants were 482 pre-doctoral students in a U.S dental school. Students’ perceived effectiveness of online courses during the pandemic was assessed with a survey. Students’ course grades for online courses during summer quarter 2020 were compared with that of a control group who received face-to-face instruction for the same courses before the pandemic in summer quarter 2019. Results Survey results revealed that most online courses were well accepted by the students, and 80 % of them wanted to continue with some online instruction post pandemic. Regression analyses revealed that students’ perceived engagement with faculty and classmates predicted their perceived effectiveness of the online course. More notably, Chi Square tests demonstrated that in 16 out of the 17 courses compared, the online cohort during summer quarter 2020 was equally or more likely to get an A course grade than the analogous face-to-face cohort during summer quarter 2019. Conclusions This is the first empirical study in dental education to demonstrate that online courses during the pandemic could achieve equivalent or better student course performance than the same pre-pandemic in-person courses. The findings fill in gaps in literature and may inform online learning design moving forward.

Abstract Online learning is becoming a commonplace in different settings starting from elementary, secondary and higher levels of education. Different educational institutions use different communication tools to promote learning because the expansive nature of the Internet and the accessibility of technology have generated a surge in the demand for web-based teaching and learning across the nations (Chaney, 2010). The online teaching and learning have become a necessity for education around the globe during COVID 19-pandemic. There are several challenges which are faced during online classes because the students must have strong self-motivation skills and be very disciplined to achieve the desired learning results. This paper presents and analyzes the data on the benefits and challenges of online teaching at South East European University (SEEU) during COVID 19 pandemic. The participants of the study are students of the BA level majoring in English Language and Literature and German Language and Literature at SEEU in Tetovo, North Macedonia. To answer the research questions, we have used a student questionnaire, interviews, and student reflection papers written during the online courses. Overall, the research indicates that benefits of online coursework outweigh the challenges that students face during the online classes. From a safety perspective, this study emphasizes the need to consider the impact of online teaching on student motivation and the paper raises important questions about how to best support students enrolled in online courses. Further research is needed in order to better evaluate the benefits, challenges, and useful strategies of successful students enrolled in online courses.

The spread of COVID-19 outbreaks makes learning activities in Indonesia become online learning. Online learning is followed by new problems, those are limited internet data, bad internet networks, and the use of many applications. Online learning in Indonesia must be immediately optimized because the COVID-19 outbreak is not over yet and there is a discourse that online learning will be applied permanently. The teacher can optimize online learning by building a website as an online classroom. If teachers build their websites, they can adjust the features on the website based on the online learning problems and the subject matter needs. Based on a questionnaire distributed, 83% of student respondents agreed if the teacher made a website. Besides, most of teacher respondents think the website can optimize online learning. The idea of the website as an online classroom is expected to contribute ideas and alternatives for online learning programs in Indonesia.

2020 was a truly revolutionary year in terms of education – from the paradigm of predominantly traditional education, we had to rapidly “step” into a distance format, regardless of our desire and readiness. In 2020 two tectonic shifts happened at once: the shift from synchronous offline classes (education) to synchronous online and then from synchronous formats to asynchronous and mixed. In addition to issues related to the technical support of the educational process, the issue related to the development of new professional and pedagogical principles and rules that would contribute to the highly moral behavior and activities of the teacher in creating a comfortable environment for all participants of distance learning process, emphasizing that ethical requirements must reflect the relationship between teachers and learners. We conducted a research aimed at revealing the principles and values the teachers consider crucial to follow when conducting online classes, the skills they think they need master in order to raise the level of their professional expertise, improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes, and make their students self-confident and independent. The results of the survey can be used in designing special courses devoted to professional or pedagogical ethics in online learning.

Distance learning can be regarded as learning that predominates entirely through the internet. It has been implemented because of the pandemic of Covid 19. According to Chaney (2010: 5-21), it is also referred to as distance learning, which is a swiftly flourishing setting that allows teachers and students and all people working in all domains the flexibility of working beyond the restraints of time and place. Also, this shift from face-to-face lectures to online classes is the only possible solution. Nevertheless, academic institutions would not be capable of converting all of their college curricula into an online resource overnight. Distance, scale, and personalized learning are the three biggest challenges for online learning. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to shed light on the challenges of online learning for students at the university level. And then to try to find out the possible solutions and recommendations to enhance online learning for the benefit of students.
